We establish new approximation results in the sense of Lusin for Sobolev functions $f$ with $|\nabla f| \in L\log L$ on infinite-dimensional spaces equipped with Gaussian measures. The proof relies on some new pointwise estimate for the approximations based on the corresponding semigroup which can be of independent interest.
We establish new approximation results, in the sense of Lusin, of Sobolev functions by Lipschitz ones, in some classes of non-doubling metric measure structures. Our proof technique relies upon estimates for heat semigroups and applies to Gaussian and $RCD(K, \infty)$ spaces. As a consequence, we obtain quantitative stability for regular Lagrangian flows in Gaussian settings.
In this paper, the authors characterize Sobolev spaces $W^{α,p}({\mathbb R}^n)$ with the smoothness order $α\in(0,2]$ and $p\in(\max\{1, \frac{2n}{2α+n}\},\infty)$, via the Lusin area function and the Littlewood-Paley $g_λ^\ast$-function in terms of centered ball averages. The authors also show that the condition $p\in(\max\{1, \frac{2n}{2α+n}\},\infty)$ is nearly sharp in the sense that these characterizations are no longer true when $p\in (1,\max\{1, \frac{2n}{2α+n}\})$. These characterizations provide a new possible way to introduce fractional Sobolev spaces with smoothness order in $(1,2]$…
We prove a scale of generalized $L^p$-Poincaré inequalities and Sobolev type inequalities on graphs with polynomial volume growth. They are optimal on Vicsek graphs.
We give by simple arguments sufficient conditions, so called Lyapunov conditions, for Talagrand's transportation information inequality and for the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Those sufficient conditions work even in the case where the Bakry-Emery curvature is not lower bounded. Several new examples are provided.
A criterion is presented for the Modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality on metric measure spaces. The criterion based on U-bound inequalities introduced by Hebisch and Zegarlinski allows to show the inequality for measures that go beyond log-concavity.
We use the characterization of weak type inequalities via Garsia-Rodemich conditions to show self improving properties of Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities in a very general context.
A note that points out the possibility to have p<1 in Sobolev type of inequalities by a use of the momomial structure of polynomials or power series. The proof is simple: Triangle angle inequality p*>1, monomial estimate from p* to exponent p<1, then the inverse triangle inequality.
We deduce an extension theorem for the so-called Sobolev-Grand Lebesgue Spaces defined on the suitable subsets of the whole finite-dimensional Euclidean space, and estimate the norms of correspondent extension operator, which may be choosed as linear.
In the setting of Carnot groups, we prove the $q-$Logarithmic Sobolev inequality for probability measures as a function of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance. As an application, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the setting of Carnot groups to prove the $p-$Talagrand inequality and hypercontractivity.
Let $p\in(1,\infty)$ and $q\in[1,\infty)$. In this article, the authors characterize the Triebel-Lizorkin space ${F}^α_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with smoothness order $α\in(0,2)$ via the Lusin-area function and the $g_λ^*$-function in terms of difference between $f(x)$ and its average $B_tf(x):=\frac1{|B(x,t)|}\int_{B(x,t)}f(y)\,dy$ over a ball $B(x,t)$ centered at $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ with radius $t\in(0,1)$. As an application, the authors obtain a series of characterizations of $F^α_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ via pointwise inequalities, involving ball averages, in spirit close to Hajłasz gradients, …
In the setting of the Euclidean space equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure, we prove the equivalence between several notions of function of bounded variation present in the literature. We also study the relation between various definitions of 1-Sobolev function.
We consider a homogeneous fractional Sobolev space obtained by completion of the space of smooth test functions, with respect to a Sobolev--Slobodecki\uı norm. We compare it to the fractional Sobolev space obtained by the $K-$method in real interpolation theory. We show that the two spaces do not always coincide and give some sufficient conditions on the open sets for this to happen. We also highlight some unnatural behaviors of the interpolation space. The treatment is as self-contained as possible.
In our companion paper (S.N. Chandler Wilde, D.P. Hewett, A. Moiola, Sobolev spaces on non-Lipschitz subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with application to boundary integral equations on fractal screens, 2016) we studied a number of different Sobolev spaces on a general (non-Lipschitz) open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, defined as closed subspaces of the classical Bessel potential spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $s\in\mathbb{R}$. These spaces are mapped by the restriction operator to certain spaces of distributions on $Ω$. In this note we make some observations about the relation between these spaces of…
This note proves sharp affine Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities which are stronger than all known sharp Euclidean Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities and imply the affine $L^{p}-$Sobolev inequalities. The logarithmic version of affine $L^{p}-$Sobolev inequalities is verified. Moreover, An alternative proof of the affine Moser-Trudinger and Morrey-Sobolev inequalities is given. The main tools are the equimeasurability of rearrangements and the strengthened version of the classical Pólys-Szegö principle.
This note presents a method based on Feynman-Kac semigroups for logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. It follows the recent work of Bonnefont and Joulin on intertwining relations for diffusion operators, formerly used for spectral gap inequalities, and related to perturbation techniques. In particular, it goes beyond the Bakry-{É}mery criterion and allows to investigate high-dimensional effects on the optimal logarithmic Sobolev constant. The method is illustrated on particular examples (namely Subbotin distributions and double-well potentials), for which explicit dimension-free bounds on the latte…
These lecture notes contain an extended version of the material presented in the C.I.M.E. summer course in 2017, aiming to give a detailed introduction to the metric Sobolev theory. The notes are divided in four main parts. The first one is devoted to a preliminary study of the underlying topological, metric, and measure-theoretic aspects of a general extended metric-topological measure space $\mathbb X=(X,τ,\mathsf d,\mathfrak m)$. The second part is devoted to the construction of the Cheeger energy, initially defined on a distinguished unital algebra of Lipschitz functions. The third part de…
The purpose of this note is to discuss how various Sobolev spaces defined on multiple cones behave with respect to density of smooth functions, interpolation and extension/restriction to/from $\RR^n$. The analysis interestingly combines use of Poincaré inequalities and of some Hardy type inequalities.
The aim of this note is to explain in which sense an axiomatic Sobolev space over a general metric measure space (à la Gol'dshtein-Troyanov) induces - under suitable locality assumptions - a first-order differential structure.
In this note we study boundedness of a large class of maximal operators in Sobolev spaces that includes the spherical maximal operator. We also study the size of the set of Lebesgue points with respect to convergence associated with such maximal operators.
In this note we bound the deficit in the logarithmic Sobolev Inequality and in the Talagrand transport-entropy Inequality for the Gaussian measure, in any dimension, by mean of a distance introduced by Bucur and Fragalà.
We prove a characterization of Hardy's inequality in Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces in terms of positive local weak supersolutions of the relevant Euler-Lagrange equation. This extends previous results by Ancona and Kinnunen & Korte for standard Sobolev spaces. The proof is based on variational methods.
The aim of this brief note is to provide a quick and elementary proof of the following known fact: on a metric measure space whose Sobolev space is separable, there exists a test plan that is sufficient to identify the minimal weak upper gradient of every Sobolev function.
In this note we investigate the image of Sobolev spaces of fractional order on a compact Lie group $ K $ under the Segal-Bargmann transform. We show that the image can be characterised in terms of certain weighted Bergman spaces of holomorphic functions on the complexification extending a theorem of Hall and Lewkeeratiyutkul. We also treat the heat kernel transform associated to the Hermite operator.
We prove fractional Hardy--Sobolev--Maz'ya inequality for balls and a half-space, partially answering the open problem posed by Frank and Seiringer [arXiv:0906.1561v1 [math.FA], 2009] We note that for half-spaces this inequality has been recently obtained by Sloane [arXiv:1004.4828v1 [math.FA], 2010].
T. Coulhon introduced an interesting reformulation of the usual Sobolev inequalities. We characterize Coulhon type inequalities in terms of rearrangement inequalities.
In this note, we prove that the boundary of a $(W^{1, p}, BV)$-extension domain is of volume zero under the assumption that the domain $\boz$ is $1$-fat at almost every $x\in\partial\boz$. Especially, the boundary of any planar $(W^{1, p}, BV)$-extension domain is of volume zero.
In this note, we give the affirmative answer of the question in [18], which is a compactness result of the non-radial Sobolev spaces. As an application, we show the existence of an extremal function of the critical Hardy inequality under spherical average zero. Next, we give an improvement of the compactness results of the radial Sobolev spaces in [8]. In Appendix, we give an alternative proof of Hardy type inequalities under spherical average zero.
In this note we show that the general theory of vector valued singular integral operators of Calderón-Zygmund defined on general metric measure spaces, can be applied to obtain Sobolev type regularity properties for solutions of the dyadic fractional Laplacian. In doing so, we define partial derivatives in terms of Haar multipliers and dyadic homogeneous singular integral operators.
In this note we establish the boundedness properties of local maximal operators $M_G$ on the fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}(G)$ whenever $G$ is an open set in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $0<s<1$ and $1<p<\infty$. As an application, we characterize the fractional $(s,p)$-Hardy inequality on a bounded open set $G$ by a Maz'ya-type testing condition localized to Whitney cubes.
Cocompactness is a property of embeddings between two Banach spaces, similar to but weaker than compactness, defined relative to some non-compact group of bijective isometries. In presence of a cocompact embedding, bounded sequences (in the domain space) have subsequences that can be represented as a sum of a well-structured "bubble decomposition" (or defect of compactness) plus a remainder vanishing in the target space. This note is an exposition of different proofs of cocompactness for Sobolev-type embeddings, which employ methods of classical PDE, potential theory, and harmonic analysis.
The present note contains a review of $p$-energies and Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces that carry a strongly local regular Dirichlet form. These Sobolev spaces are then used to generalize some basic results from the calculus of variations, such as the existence of minimizers for convex functionals and certain constrained mimimization problems. This applies to a number of non-classical situations such as degenerate diffusions, superpositions of diffusions and diffusions on fractals or on products of fractals.
We have recently introduced the trimming property for a complete Riemannian manifold $N^{n}$ as a necessary and sufficient condition for bounded maps to be strongly dense in $W^{1, p}(B^m; N^{n})$ when $p \in \{1, \dotsc, m\}$. We prove in this note that even under a weaker notion of approximation, namely the weak sequential convergence, the trimming property remains necessary for the approximation in terms of bounded maps. The argument involves the construction of a Sobolev map having infinitely many analytical singularities going to infinity.
For many known non-compact embeddings of two Banach spaces $E\hookrightarrow F$, every bounded sequence in $E$ has a subsequence that takes form of a profile decomposition - a sum of clearly structured terms with asymptotically disjoint supports plus a remainder that vanishes in the norm of $F$. In this note we construct a profile decomposition for arbitrary sequences in the Sobolev space $H^{1,2}(M)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold, relative to the embedding of $H^{1,2}(M)$ into $L^{2^*}(M)$, generalizing the well-known profile decomposition of Struwe ([Proposition 2.1]{Struwe}) to the case …
In this note we study the eigenvalue growth of infinite graphs with discrete spectrum. We assume that the corresponding Dirichlet forms satisfy certain Sobolev-type inequalities and that the total measure is finite. In this sense, the associated operators on these graphs display similarities to elliptic operators on bounded domains in the continuum. Specifically, we prove lower bounds on the eigenvalue growth and show by examples that corresponding upper bounds can not be established.
We present a simple proof of the continuity, in the sense distributions, of the minors of the differential matrices of mappings belonging to grand Sobolev spaces. Such function spaces were introduced in connection with a problem on minimal integrability of the Jacobian and are useful in certain aspects of geometric function theory and partial differential equations.
In this note we prove that: \begin{theorem} for $2\leq s<\frac{n}{2}$ or $1\leq s<\frac{2n}{n+1}$ or $1\leq s<\frac{n}{2}$ but n is even, $(-Δ)^{s}(u)=|u|^{q-2}u,q=\frac{2n}{n-2s}$ has infinitely many sign changing solutions or equivalently we can say that there exist solutions $u_{k}$ such that $\int u_{k}(-Δ)^{s}(u_{k})dx \to \infty$ as $k\to \infty$ \end{theorem}
The classical Hausdorff-Young inequalities for the Fourier transform acting between appropriate $L_p$ spaces are cornerstones of Fourier analysis. Here we extend it to weighted spaces of Besov or Sobolev type where the weight has the form $w(x)=(1+|x|^2)^{α/2}$. This note is not a paper or draft but a sketchy complement to some earlier results where we dealt with mapping properties of the Fourier transform.
In this note, we establish a $L^p-$version of the Poincaré--Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb H^n$. The interest of this result is that it relates both the Poincaré (or Hardy) inequality and the Sobolev inequality with the sharp constant in $\mathbb H^n$. Our approach is based on the comparison of the $L^p-$norm of gradient of the symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function in both the hyperbolic space and the Euclidean space, and the sharp Sobolev inequalities in Euclidean spaces. This approach also gives the proof of the Poincaré--Gagliardo--Nirenberg and Poincaré--…
A basilar property and a useful tool in the theory of Sobolev spaces is the density of smooth compactly supported functions in the space $W^{k,p}(\R^n)$ (i.e. the functions with weak derivatives of orders $0$ to $k$ in $L^p$). On Riemannian manifolds, it is well known that the same property remains valid under suitable geometric assumptions. However, on a complete non-compact manifold it can fail to be true in general, as we prove in this paper. This settles an open problem raised for instance by E. Hebey [\textit{Nonlinear analysis on manifolds: Sobolev spaces and inequalities}, Courant Lectu…
We present the fractional perimeter as a set-function interpolation between the Lebesgue measure and the perimeter in the sense of De Giorgi. Our motivation comes from a new fractional Boxing inequality that relates the fractional perimeter and the Hausdorff content and implies several known inequalities involving the Gagliardo seminorm of the Sobolev spaces $W^{α, 1}$ of order $0 < α< 1$.
This note, mostly expository, is devoted to Poincar{é} and log-Sobolev inequalities for a class of Boltzmann-Gibbs measures with singular interaction. Such measures allow to model one-dimensional particles with confinement and singular pair interaction. The functional inequalities come from convexity. We prove and characterize optimality in the case of quadratic confinement via a factorization of the measure. This optimality phenomenon holds for all beta Hermite ensembles including the Gaussian unitary ensemble, a famous exactly solvable model of random matrix theory. We further explore exact …
This short note investigates the compact embedding of degenerate matrix weighted Sobolev spaces into weighted Lebesgue spaces. The Sobolev spaces explored are defined as the abstract completion of Lipschitz functions in a bounded domain $Ω$ with respect to the norm: $$\|f\|_{QH^{1,p}(v,μ;Ω)} = \|f\|_{L^p_v(Ω)} + \|\nabla f\|_{\mathcal{L}^p_Q(μ;Ω)}$$ where the weight $v$ is comparable to a power of the pointwise operator norm of the matrix valued function $Q=Q(x)$ in $Ω$. Following our main theorem, we give an explicit application where degeneracy is controlled through an ellipticity condition …
It has long been known that the differential operator $D$ represents a typical examples of unbounded operators in many Banach spaces including the classical Fock spaces, the Fock--Sobolev spaces, and the generalized Fock spaces where the weight decays faster than the Gaussian weight. In this note we identify Fock type spaces where the operator admits some basic spectral structures including compactness and membership in the Schatten $\mathcal{S}_p$ classes. We also showed that its nontrivial spectrum while acting on such spaces is precisely the closed unit disk $\D$ in the complex plane.
In this note, we introduce a variant of Calderón and Zygmund's notion of $L^p$-differentiability - an \emph{$L^p$-Taylor approximation}. Our first result is that functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ possess a first order $L^p$-Taylor approximation. This is in analogy with Calderón and Zygmund's result concerning the $L^p$-differentiability of Sobolev functions. In fact, the main result we announce here is that the first order $L^p$-Taylor approximation characterizes the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)$, and therefore implies $L^p$-differentiability. Our approach establis…
The present paper is devoted to analysis of the lack of compactness of bounded sequences in \emph{inhomogeneous} Sobolev spaces, where bounded sequences might fail to be compact due to an isometric group action, that is, \emph{translation}. It will be proved that every bounded sequence $(u_n)$ has (possibly infinitely many) \emph{profiles}, and then the sequence is asymptotically decomposed into a sum of translated profiles and a double-suffixed residual term, where the residual term becomes arbitrarily small in appropriate Lebesgue or Sobolev spaces of lower order. To this end, functional ana…
In this short note we prove the logarithmic Sobolev inequality with derivatives of fractional order on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with an explicit expression for the constant. Namely, we show that for all $0<s<\frac{n}{2}$ and $a>0$ we have the inequality \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|f(x)|^2 \log \left( \frac{|f(x)|^2}{\|f\|^{2}_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}}\right)\,dx+\frac{n}{s}(1+\log a)\|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}^{2}\leq C(n,s,a)\|(-Δ)^{s/2}f\|^{2}_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)} \] with an explicit $C(n,s,a)$ depending on $a$, the order $s$, and the dimension $n$, and investigate the behaviour of $C(n,s,a)$ for large $n$. Notabl…
