We consider a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, which describes the mean-field limit of interacting particles driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion. When the interaction potential is attractive, it is previously known that all steady states must be radially decreasing up to a translation, but uniqueness (for a given mass) within the radial class was open, except for some special interaction potentials. For general attractive potentials, we show that the uniqueness/non-uniqueness criteria are determined by the power of the degenerate diffusion, with the critical power being $m = 2$. In the case $m \ge 2$, we show that for any attractive potential the steady state is unique for a fixed mass. In the case $1 < m < 2$, we construct examples of smooth attractive potentials, such that there are infinitely many radially decreasing steady states of the same mass. For the uniqueness proof, we develop a novel interpolation curve between two radially decreasing densities, and the key step is to show that the interaction energy is convex along this curve for any attractive interaction potential, which is of independent interest.
In this paper we investigate the uniqueness of solutions of the steady planar Navier-Stokes equations with different boundary conditions in the exterior domain. For a class of incompressible flow with constant vorticity, we prove the uniqueness of the solution under the enhanced Navier boundary conditions. At the same time, some counterexamples are given to show that the uniqueness of the solution fails under the Navier boundary conditions. For the general incompressible flow with Dirichlet boundary condition, we prove various sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution.
Under the condition of small external forces, we obtain existence of a weak solution of the steady Hall-MHD system with Hölder continuous magnetic field. We also established regularity of weak solutions provided that magnetic fields are bounded. For sufficiently small external forces, uniqueness result is also established.
In this paper we study the uniqueness property of solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with perturbations in $\Bbb R^N$. Our perturbations include as special cases the Euler equations with a `single signed' nonlinear term, the self-similar Euler equations, and the steady Navier-Stokes equations. For these equations show that suitable decay assumptions at infinity on the solution or its derivatives, imposed by the $L^q$ conditions imply that the only possible solution is zero.
The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{\fracα{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers' solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state s…
The nonlocal nonlinear aggregation equation in one space dimension is investigated. In the so-called attractive case smooth solutions blow up in finite time, so that weak measure solutions are introduced. The velocity involved in the equation becomes discontinuous, and a particular care has to be paid to its definition as well as the formulation of the corresponding flux. When this is done, the notion of duality solutions allows to obtain global in time existence and uniqueness for measure solutions. An upwind finite volume scheme is also analyzed, and the convergence towards the unique soluti…
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the steady state convection diffusion equation. We prove that a velocity field $V$, is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, when $V \in C^{0,γ} (Ω)$, $2/3< γ\leq 1$, i.e. when $V$ is a Hölder continuous vector field with $2/3< γ\leq 1$.
We establish the local uniqueness of steady transonic shock solutions with spherical symmetry for the three-dimensional full Euler equations. These transonic shock-fronts are important for understanding transonic shock phenomena in divergent nozzles. From mathematical point of view, we show the uniqueness of solutions of a free boundary problem for a multidimensional quasilinear system of mixed-composite elliptic--hyperbolic type. To this end, we develop a decomposition of the Euler system which works in a general Riemannian manifold, a method to study a Venttsel problem of nonclassical nonloc…
We study the uniqueness and regularity of the steady states of the diffusively driven Boltzmann equation in the physically relevant case where the restitution coefficient depends on the impact velocity including, in particular, the case of viscoelastic hard-spheres. We adopt a strategy which is novel in several aspects, in particular, the study of regularity does not requires a priori knowledge of the time-dependent problem. Furthermore, the uniqueness result is obtained in the small thermalization regime by studying the so-called quasi-elastic limit for the problem. An important new aspect li…
We establish uniqueness of vanishing radially decreasing entire solutions, which we call ground states, to some semilinear fractional elliptic equations. In particular, we treat the fractional plasma equation and the supercritical power nonlinearity. As an application, we deduce uniqueness of radial steady states for nonlocal aggregation-diffusion equations of Keller-Segel type, even in the regime that is dominated by aggregation.
We investigate a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid in a bounded simple connected domain and focus on the vortex patch problem with prescribed vorticity strength. There are two methods to deal with the existence of solutions for this problem: the vorticity method and the stream function method. A long standing open problem is whether these two entirely different methods result in the same solution. In this paper, we will give a positive answer to this problem by studying the local uniqueness of the solutions. Another result obtained in this paper is that if the domain is convex, then the vor…
We show that for steady compressible potential flow in a class of straight divergent nozzles with arbitrary cross-section, if the flow is supersonic and spherically symmetric at the entry, and the given pressure (velocity) is appropriately large (small) and also spherically symmetric at the exit, then there exists uniquely one transonic shock in the nozzle. In addition, the shock-front and the supersonic flow ahead of it, as well as the subsonic flow behind of it, are all spherically symmetric. This is a global uniqueness result of free boundary problems of elliptic--hyperbolic mixed type equa…
The configurational distribution function, solution of an evolution (diffusion) equation of the Fokker-Planck-Smoluchowski type, is (at least part of) the corner stone of polymer dynamics: it is the key to calculating the stress tensor components. This can be reckoned from \cite{bird2}, where a wealth of calculation details is presented regarding various polymer chain models and their ability to accurately predict viscoelastic flows. One of the simplest polymer chain idealization is the Bird and Warner's model of finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) chains. In this work we offer a proo…
We consider an aggregation model for two interacting species. The coupling between the species is via their velocities, that incorporate self- and cross-interactions. Our main interest is categorizing the possible steady states of the considered model. Notably, we identify their regions of existence and stability in the parameter space. For assessing the stability we use a combination of variational tools (based on the gradient flow formulation of the model and the associated energy), and linear stability analysis (perturbing the boundaries of the species' supports). We rely on numerical inves…
Existence and uniqueness of global in time measure solution for a one dimensional nonlinear aggregation equation is considered. Such a system can be written as a conservation law with a velocity field computed through a selfconsistant interaction potential. Blow up of regular solutions is now well established for such system. In Carrillo et al. (Duke Math J (2011)), a theory of existence and uniqueness based on the geometric approach of gradient flows on Wasserstein space has been developped. We propose in this work to establish the link between this approach and duality solutions. This latter…
We are interested in studying the stationary solutions and phase transitions of aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion of porous medium-type, with exponent $1 < m < \infty$. We first prove the existence of possibly infinitely many bifurcations from the spatially homogeneous steady state. We then focus our attention on the associated free energy proving existence of minimisers and even uniqueness for sufficiently weak interactions. In the absence of uniqueness, we show that the system exhibits phase transitions: we classify values of $m$ and interaction potentials $W$ for which these p…
Incompressible Euler flows in narrow domains, in which the horizontal length scale is much larger than other scales, play an important role in applications, and their leading-order behavior can be described by the hydrostatic Euler equations. In this paper, we show that steady solutions of the hydrostatic Euler equations in an infinite strip strictly away from stagnation must be shear flows. Furthermore, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of global steady solutions to the hydrostatic Euler equations in general nozzles. In terms of stream function formulation, the hydro…
A relatively complete picture on the steady states of the following Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-Poisson-Slater (SPS) system \[ \begin{cases} -ΔQ+Q=VQ-C_{S}Q^{2}, & Q>0\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^{3}\\ Q(x)\to0, & \mbox{as }x\to\infty,\\ -ΔV=Q^{2}, & \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{3}\\ V(x)\to0 & \mbox{as }x\to\infty. \end{cases} \] is given in this paper: existence, uniqueness, regularity and asymptotic behavior at infinity, where $C_{S}>0$ is a constant. To the author's knowledge, this is the first uniqueness result on SPS system.
We study the 2D Euler equation in a bounded simply-connected domain, and establish the local uniqueness of flow whose stream function $ψ_\varepsilon$ satisfies \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2Δψ_\varepsilon=\sum\limits_{i=1}^k \mathbf1_{B_δ(z_{0,i})}(ψ_\varepsilon-μ_{\varepsilon,i})_+^γ,\ \ \ & \text{in} \ Ω, ψ_\varepsilon=0,\ \ \ & \text{on} \ Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} with $\varepsilon\to 0^+$ the scale parameter of vortices, $γ\in(0,\infty)$, $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ a bounded simply connected Lipschitz domain, $z_{0,i}\inΩ$ the limiting location of $i^{\text{th}}$ vortex, …
We investigate the diffusion-aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion $Δu^m$ and singular interaction kernel $\mathcal{K}_s = (-Δ)^{-s}$ with $s\in(0,\frac{d}{2})$. We analyze the regime %($m>2-2s/d$, $d$ is the dimension) where the diffusive forces are stronger than the aggregation forces. In such regime, we show existence, uniform boundedness and Hölder regularity of solutions in the case that either $s>\frac{1}{2}$ or $m<2$. Uniqueness is proved for kernels with $s>1$.
In this paper, global-in-time existence and blow up results are shown for a reaction-diffusion equation appearing in the theory of aggregation phenomena (including chemotaxis). Properties of the corresponding steady-state problem are also presented. Moreover, the stability around constant equilibria and the non-existence of non-constant solutions are studied in certain cases.
This article studies the solutions in H 1 of a steady transport equation with a divergence-free driving velocity that is W 1,$\infty$ , in a two-dimensional bounded polygon. Since the velocity is assumed fully non-homogeneous on the boundary, existence and uniqueness of the solution require a boundary condition on the open part $Γ$ -- where the normal component of u is strictly negative. In a previous article, we studied the solutions in L 2 of this steady transport equation. The methods, developed in this article, can be extended to prove existence and uniqueness of a solution in H 1 with Dir…
We consider an aggregation-diffusion model, where the diffusion is nonlinear of porous medium type and the aggregation is governed by the Riesz potential of order s. The addition of a quadratic diffusion term produces a more precise competition with the aggregation term for small s, as they have the same scaling if s=0. We prove existence and uniqueness of stationary states and we characterize their asymptotic behavior as s goes to zero. Moreover, we prove existence of gradient flow solutions to the evolution problem by applying the JKO scheme.
We study the uniqueness of steady states of strong-KPP reaction--diffusion equations in general domains under various boundary conditions. We show that positive bounded steady states are unique provided the domain satisfies a certain spectral nondegeneracy condition. We also formulate a number of open problems and conjectures.
In this paper a nonlinear coupled Schrodinger system in the presence of mixed cubic and superlinear power laws is considered. Focus are made on the steady state solutions of the continuous system for existence and uniqueness by minimizing problem on some associated Nehari manifold.
We study the uniqueness of solutions with a transonic shock in a duct in a class of transonic shock solutions, which are not necessarily small perturbations of the background solution, for steady potential flow. We prove that, for given uniform supersonic upstream flow in a straight duct, there exists a unique uniform pressure at the exit of the duct such that a transonic shock solution exists in the duct, which is unique modulo translation. For any other given uniform pressure at the exit, there exists no transonic shock solution in the duct. This is equivalent to establishing a uniqueness th…
We prove that for the two-dimensional steady complete compressible Euler system, with given uniform upcoming supersonic flows, the following three fundamental flow patterns (special solutions) in gas dynamics involving transonic shocks are all unique in the class of piecewise $C^1$ smooth functions, under appropriate conditions on the downstream subsonic flows: $(\rmnum{1})$ the normal transonic shocks in a straight duct with finite or infinite length, after fixing a point the shock-front passing through; $(\rmnum{2})$ the oblique transonic shocks attached to an infinite wedge; $(\rmnum{3})$ a…
We prove uniqueness of weak solutions of the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with potential force. We make use of the Lagrangean framework in comparing the instantaneous states of corresponding fluid particles in two different solutions. The present work provides qualitative results on how the weak solutions depend continuously on initial data and steady states.
Starting from the classic contraction mapping principle, we establish a general, flexible, variational setting that turns out to be applicable to many situations of existence in Differential Equations. We show its potentiality with some selected examples including initial-value, Cauchy problems for ODEs; non-linear, monotone PDEs; linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems; and steady Navier-Stokes systems.
This paper studies uniqueness and nonuniqueness for potential reconstruction from one boundary measurement in quantum fields, associated with the steady state Schrödinger equation. A uniqueness theorem of the inverse problem is established. In the meanwhile, a nonuniqueness theorem is also given when different potential and shape are considered. Finally, Tikhonov regularization method is applied to solve the reconstruction problem, and some numerical examples are presented to confirm the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
A numerical analysis of upwind type schemes for the nonlinear nonlocal aggregation equation is provided. In this approach, the aggregation equation is interpreted as a conservative transport equation driven by a nonlocal nonlinear velocity field with low regularity. In particular, we allow the interacting potential to be pointy, in which case the velocity field may have discontinuities. Based on recent results of existence and uniqueness of a Filippov flow for this type of equations, we study an upwind finite volume numerical scheme and we prove that it is convergent at order 1/2 in Wasserstei…
This paper studies the large time behavior of aggregation-diffusion equations. For one spatial dimension with certain assumptions on the interaction potential, the diffusion index $m$, and the initial data, we prove the convergence to the unique steady state as time goes to infinity (equilibration), with an explicit algebraic rate. The proof is based on a uniform-in-time bound on the first moment of the density distribution, combined with an energy dissipation rate estimate. This is the first result on the equilibration of aggregation-diffusion equations for a general class of weakly confining…
This paper explains the uniqueness of positive steady state of general Lotka-Volterra competition model of two species of animals in the same environment.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a "steady" spiral moving with forced mean curvature motion. This spiral has a stationary shape and rotates with constant angular velocity. Under appropriate conditions on the initial data, we also show the long time convergence (up to some subsequence in time) of the solution of the Cauchy problem to the steady state. This result is based on a new Liouville result which is of independent interest.
The existence of weak solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ is proven. This particular geometry was the only case left open since the work of Leray in 1933. The reason is that due to the absence of boundaries the local behavior of the solutions cannot be controlled by the enstrophy in two dimensions. We overcome this difficulty by constructing approximate weak solutions having a prescribed mean velocity on some given bounded set. As a corollary, we obtain infinitely many weak solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ parameterized by this mean velocity, which …
For the interaction energy with repulsive-attractive potentials, we give generic conditions which guarantee the radial symmetry of the local minimizers in the infinite Wasserstein distance. As a consequence, we obtain the uniqueness of local minimizers in this topology for a class of interaction potentials. We introduce a novel notion of concavity of the interaction potential allowing us to show certain fractal-like behavior of the local minimizers. We provide a family of interaction potentials such that the support of the associated local minimizers has no isolated points and any superlevel s…
In this article we study uniqueness and nonuniqueness for potential reconstruction from one boundary measurement in quantum fields, associated with the steady state Schrödinger equation. It is an extension of our recent work \cite{Zheng2019}. Based the theory of the ND map and modified bessel function, the uniqueness theorem of the inverse problem in two-dimensional nd three-dimensional core-shell structure is established, respectively. When different potential and shape are considered, the nonuniqueness results is also proved.
In this paper, we study non-Newtonian fluids in a class of unbounded domains with noncompact boundaries. With respect to the resulting mathematical problems, we establish the global existence of solutions with arbitrary large flux under some suitable conditions, and meanwhile, show the uniqueness of the solutions when the flux is sufficiently small. Our results are an extension or an improvement of those obtained in some previous references.
In this paper we are interested in a degenerate parabolic system of reaction-diffusion equations arising in biology when studying cell adhesion at the protein level. In this modeling the unknown is the couple of the distribution laws of the freely diffusing proteins and of the fixed ones. Under sufficient conditions on the aggregation and unbinding probabilities, we prove the existence of solution of the considered system, as well as their positivity, boundedness and uniqueness. Moreover, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium solution. Finally, we show that the simpler and particular cho…
We consider a parabolic equation of the form u_t=Δu +f(u)+h(x,t) in R^N\times (0,\infty), where f in C^1(R) is such that f(0)=0 and f'(0)<0 and h is a suitable function on R^N\times (0,\infty). We show that under certain conditions, each globally defined and nonnegative bounded solution u converges to a single steady state.
We investigate the issue of uniqueness of the limit flow for a relevant class of quasi-linear parabolic equations defined on the whole space. More precisely, we shall investigate conditions which guarantee that the global solutions decay at infinity uniformly in time and their entire trajectory approaches a single steady state as time goes to infinity. Finally, we obtain a characterization of solutions which blow-up, vanish or converge to a stationary state for initial data of the form $λφ_0$ while $λ>0$ crosses a bifurcation value $λ_0$.
We consider a continuum aggregation model with nonlinear local repulsion given by a degenerate power-law diffusion with general exponent. The steady states and their properties in one dimension are studied both analytically and numerically, suggesting that the quadratic diffusion is a critical case. The focus is on finite-size, monotone and compactly supported equilibria. We also investigate numerically the long time asymptotics of the model by simulations of the evolution equation. Issues such as metastability and local/ global stability are studied in connection to the gradient flow formulat…
