We consider an aggregation model for two interacting species. The coupling between the species is via their velocities, that incorporate self- and cross-interactions. Our main interest is categorizing the possible steady states of the considered model. Notably, we identify their regions of existence and stability in the parameter space. For assessing the stability we use a combination of variational tools (based on the gradient flow formulation of the model and the associated energy), and linear stability analysis (perturbing the boundaries of the species' supports). We rely on numerical investigations for those steady states that are not analytically tractable. Finally we perform a two-scale expansion to characterize the steady state in the limit of asymptotically weak cross-interactions.
We consider the aggregation equation $ρ_{t}-\nabla\cdot(ρ\nabla K\astρ) =0$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where the interaction potential $K$ incorporates short-range Newtonian repulsion and long-range power-law attraction. We study the global well-posedness of solutions and investigate analytically and numerically the equilibrium solutions. We show that there exist unique equilibria supported on a ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. By using the method of moving planes we prove that such equilibria are radially symmetric and monotone in the radial coordinate. We perform asymptotic studies for the limiting cases w…
For the interaction energy with repulsive-attractive potentials, we give generic conditions which guarantee the radial symmetry of the local minimizers in the infinite Wasserstein distance. As a consequence, we obtain the uniqueness of local minimizers in this topology for a class of interaction potentials. We introduce a novel notion of concavity of the interaction potential allowing us to show certain fractal-like behavior of the local minimizers. We provide a family of interaction potentials such that the support of the associated local minimizers has no isolated points and any superlevel s…
We investigate the effect of linear diffusion and interactions with the domain boundary on swarm equilibria by analyzing critical points of the associated energy functional. Through this process we uncover two properties of energy minimization that depend explicitly on the spatial domain: (i) unboundedness from below of the energy due to an imbalance between diffusive and aggregative forces depends explicitly on a certain volume filling property of the domain, and (ii) metastable mass translation occurs in domains without sufficient symmetry. From the first property, we present a sharp conditi…
In this paper we study the rate of convergence to the complex balanced equilibrium for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems with boundary equilibria. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes, and whose right hand side is bounded above by a quadratic nonlinearity in the positive orthant. We prove similar results on the convergence to the positive equilibrium for a fairly general two-species reversible reaction-diffusion network with boundary equilibria.
This paper is concerned with reaction-diffusion systems of two symmetric species in spatial dimension one, having two stable symmetric equilibria connected by a symmetric standing front. The first order variation of the speed of this front when the symmetry is broken through a small perturbation of the diffusion coefficients is computed. This elementary computation relates to the question, arising from population dynamics, of the influence of mobility on dominance, in reaction-diffusion systems modelling the interaction of two competing species. It is applied to two examples. First a toy examp…
This paper deals with analysis and numerical simulations of a one-dimensional two-species hyperbolic aggregation model. This model is formed by a system of transport equations with nonlocal velocities, which describes the aggregate dynamics of a two-species population in interaction appearing for instance in bacterial chemotaxis. Blow-up of classical solutions occurs in finite time. This raises the question to define measure-valued solutions for this system. To this aim, we use the duality method developed for transport equations with discontinuous velocity to prove the existence and uniquenes…
We analyze under which conditions equilibration between two competing effects, repulsion modeled by nonlinear diffusion and attraction modeled by nonlocal interaction, occurs. This balance leads to continuous compactly supported radially decreasing equilibrium configurations for all masses. All stationary states with suitable regularity are shown to be radially symmetric by means of continuous Steiner symmetrization techniques. Calculus of variations tools allow us to show the existence of global minimizers among these equilibria. Finally, in the particular case of Newtonian interaction in two…
We study the long-time behavior of the solutions of a two-component reaction-diffusion system on the real line, which describes the basic chemical reaction $A <=> 2 B$. Assuming that the initial densities of the species $A, B$ are bounded and nonnegative, we prove that the solution converges uniformly on compact sets to the manifold $E$ of all spatially homogeneous chemical equilibria. The result holds even if the species diffuse at very different rates, but the proof is substantially simpler for equal diffusivities. In the spirit of our previous work on extended dissipative systems [18], our …
We study the global in time existence and long time asymptotics of solutions to the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system for the multi-species populations in the whole Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^2.$ We prove that at the borderline case of critical mass there exists a global {\it free energy solution} subject to initial data with finite entropy and second moment. Moreover, we show that as time $t$ approaches to infinity, all the components of the solutions concentrate in the form of a Dirac measure at a single point. Our approach utilizes the gradient flow structure in Wasserstein spa…

We study an intrinsic model for collective behaviour on the hyperbolic space $\bbh^\dm$. We investigate the equilibria of the aggregation equation (or equivalently, the critical points of the associated interaction energy) for interaction potentials that include Newtonian repulsion. By using the method of moving planes, we establish the radial symmetry and the monotonicity of equilibria supported on geodesic balls of $\bbh^\dm$. We find several explicit forms of equilibria and show that one such equilibrium is a global energy minimizer. We also consider more general potentials and utilize a te…
We investigate existence of stationary solutions to an aggregation/diffusion system of PDEs, modelling a two species predator-prey interaction. In the model this interaction is described by non-local potentials that are mutually proportional by a negative constant $-α$, with $α>0$. Each species is also subject to non-local self-attraction forces together with quadratic diffusion effects. The competition between the aforementioned mechanisms produce a rich asymptotic behaviour, namely the formation of steady states that are composed of multiple bumps, i.e. sums of Barenblatt-type profiles. The …
We consider a continuum aggregation model with nonlinear local repulsion given by a degenerate power-law diffusion with general exponent. The steady states and their properties in one dimension are studied both analytically and numerically, suggesting that the quadratic diffusion is a critical case. The focus is on finite-size, monotone and compactly supported equilibria. We also investigate numerically the long time asymptotics of the model by simulations of the evolution equation. Issues such as metastability and local/ global stability are studied in connection to the gradient flow formulat…
We study the long-time effect of noise on pattern formation for the aggregation model. We consider aggregation kernels that generate patterns consisting of two delta-concentrations. Without noise, there is a one-parameter family of admissible equilibria that consist of two concentrations whose mass is not necessary equal. We show that when a small amount of noise is added, the heavier concentration "leaks" its mass towards the lighter concentration over a very long time scale, eventually resulting in the equilibration of the two masses. We use exponentially small asymptotics to derive the long…
Recently, energetic variational approach was employed to derive models for non-isothermal electrokinetics by Liu et. al \cite{Liu-Wu-Liu-CMS2018}. In particular, the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Fourier (PNPF) system for the dynamics of $N$-ionic species in a solvent was derived. In this paper we first reformulate PNPF ($4N+6$ equations) into an evolutional system with $N+1$ equations, and define a new total electrical charge. We then prove the constant states are stable provided that they are such that the perturbed systems around them are dissipative. However, not all positive constant solutions of…
In this paper, we study the equilibria of an anisotropic, nonlocal aggregation equation with nonlinear diffusion which does not possess a gradient flow structure. Here, the anisotropy is induced by an underlying tensor field. Anisotropic forces cannot be associated with a potential in general and stationary solutions of anisotropic aggregation equations generally cannot be regarded as minimizers of an energy functional. We derive equilibrium conditions for stationary line patterns in the setting of spatially homogeneous tensor fields. The stationary solutions can be regarded as the minimizers …
We investigate the influence of multiscale aggregation and deposition on the colloidal dynamics in a saturated porous medium. At the pore scale, the aggregation of colloids is modeled by the Smoluchowski equation. Essentially, the colloidal mass is distributed between different size clusters. We treat these clusters as different species involved in a diffusion-advection-reaction mechanism. This modeling procedure allows for different material properties to be varied between the different species, specifically the rates of diffusion, aggregation, deposition as well as the advection velocities. …

In this work, we study dynamic properties of classical solutions to a homogenous Neumann initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for a two-species and two-stimuli chemotaxis model with/without chemical signalling loop in a 2D bounded and smooth domain. We successfully detect the product of two species masses as a feature to determine boundedness, gradient estimates, blow-up and $W^{j,\infty}(1\leq j\leq 3)$-exponential convergence of classical solutions for the corresponding IBVP. More specifically, we first show generally a smallness on the product of both species masses, thus allowing one spec…
We consider an aggregation model that consists of an active transport equation for the macroscopic population density, where the velocity has a nonlocal functional dependence on the density, modelled via an interaction potential. We set up the model on general Riemannian manifolds and provide a framework for constructing interaction potentials which lead to equilibria that are constant on their supports. We consider such potentials for two specific cases (the two-dimensional sphere and the two-dimensional hyperbolic space) and investigate analytically and numerically the long-time behaviour an…
We rigorously prove the passage from a Lotka-Volterra reaction-diffusion system towards a cross-diffusion system at the fast reaction limit. The system models a competition of two species, where one species has a more diverse diet than the other. The resulting limit gives a cross-diffusion system of a starvation driven type. We investigate the linear stability of homogeneous equilibria of those systems and rule out the possibility of Turing instability. Numerical simulations are included which are compatible with the theoretical results.
