We consider Gaussian fields of real symmetric, complex Hermitian or quaternionic Hermitian matrices over an electrical network, and describe how the isomorphisms between these fields and random walks give rise to topological expansions encoded by ribbon graphs. We further consider matrix-valued Gaussian fields twisted by an orthogonal, unitary or symplectic connection. In this case the isomorphisms involve traces of holonomies of the connection along random walk loops parametrized by boundary cycles of ribbon graphs.
We consider a $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued branching random walk with a stationary and ergodic environment $ξ=(ξ_n)$ indexed by time $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$. With the help of the uniform convergence of martingale and the multifractal analysis, we establish a large deviation result for the measures $Z_n$ as well as a moderate deviation principle.
Motivated by the study of existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations driven by jump noise, we prove Itô isomorphisms for $L^p$-valued stochastic integrals with respect to a compensated Poisson random measure. The principal ingredients for the proof are novel Rosenthal type inequalities for independent random variables taking values in a (noncommutative) $L^p$-space, which may be of independent interest. As a by-product of our proof, we observe some moment estimates for the operator norm of a sum of independent random matrices.
In this article we continue the study of the quenched distributions of transient, one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. In a previous article we showed that while the quenched distributions of the hitting times do not converge to any deterministic distribution, they do have a weak weak limit in the sense that - viewed as random elements of the space of probability measures - they converge in distribution to a certain random probability measure (we refer to this as a weak weak limit because it is a weak limit in the weak topology). Here, we improve this result to the path-valued…
Ciesielski's isomorphism between the space of alpha-Hölder continuous functions and the space of bounded sequences is used to give an alternative proof of the large deviation principle for Wiener processes with values in Hilbert space.
We establish the almost sure validity of the multifractal formalism for R^d-valued branching random walks on the whole relative interior of the natural convex domain of study.
We establish a deformation isomorphism between the algebras of $SU(d)$-biinvariant compactly supported measures on $SL(d,\comp)$ and $SU(d)$-conjugation invariant measures on the Euclidean space $H_d^0$ of all Hermitian $d\times d$-matrices with trace 0. This isomorphism concisely explains a close connection between the spectral problem for sums of Hermititan matrices on one hand and the singular spectral problem for products of matrices from $SL(d,\comp)$ on the other, which has recently been observed by Klyachko \cite{Kl2}. From this deformation we further obtain an explicit, probability pre…
We study the limiting occupation density process for a large number of critical and driftless branching random walks. We show that the rescaled occupation densities of $\lfloor sN\rfloor$ branching random walks, viewed as a function-valued, increasing process $\{g_{s}^{N}\}_{s\ge 0}$, converges weakly to a pure jump process in the Skorohod space $\mathbb D([0, +\infty), \mathcal C_{0}(\mathbb R))$, as $N\to\infty$. Moreover, the jumps of the limiting process consist of i.i.d. copies of an Integrated super-Brownian Excursion (ISE) density, rescaled and weighted by the jump sizes in a real-value…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of random walks in i.i.d. random environments on $\Z^d$. The environments need not be elliptic, so some steps may not be available to the random walker. We prove a monotonicity result for the velocity (when it exists) for any 2-valued environment, and show that this does not hold for 3-valued environments without additional assumptions. We give a proof of directional transience and the existence of positive speeds under strong, but non-trivial conditions on the distribution of the environment. Our results include generalisations (to the non-elliptic setting) o…
We show that the Brydges-Fröhlich-Spencer-Dynkin and the Le Jan's isomorphisms between the Gaussian free fields and the occupation times of symmetric Markov processes generalize to the $β$-Dyson's Brownian motion. For $β\in\{1,2,4\}$ this is a consequence of the Gaussian case, however the relation holds for general $β$. We further raise the question whether there is an analogue of $β$-Dyson's Brownian motion on general electrical networks, interpolating and extrapolating the fields of eigenvalues in matrix-valued Gaussian free fields. In the case $n=2$ we give a simple construction.
We prove that the upward ladder height subordinator $H$ associated to a real valued Lévy process $ξ$ has Laplace exponent $ϕ$ that varies regularly at $\infty$ (resp. at 0) if and only if the underlying Lévy process $ξ$ satisfies Sinai's condition at 0 (resp. at $\infty$). Sinai's condition for real valued Lévy processes is the continuous time analogue of Sinai's condition for random walks. We provide several criteria in terms of the characteristics of $ξ$ to determine whether or not it satisfies Sinai's condition. Some of these criteria are deduced from tail estimates of the Lévy measure of $…
We study critical branching random walks (BRWs) $U^{(n)}$ on~$\mathbb{Z}_{+}$ where for each $n$, the displacement of an offspring from its parent has drift~$2β/\sqrt{n}$ towards the origin and reflection at the origin. We prove that for any~$α>1$, conditional on survival to generation~$[n^α]$, the maximal displacement is asymptotically equivalent to $(α-1)/(4β)\sqrt{n}\log n$. We further show that for a sequence of critical BRWs with such displacement distributions, if the number of initial particles grows like~$yn^α$ for some $y>0$ and $α>1$, and the particles are concentrated in~$[0,O(\sqrt…
In this paper, we give explicit rates in the central limit theorem and in the almost sure invariance principle for general R d-valued cocycles that appear in the study of the left random walk on linear groups. Our method of proof lies on a suitable martingale approximation and on a careful estimation of some coupling coefficients linked with the underlying Markov structure. Concerning the martingale part, the available results in the literature are not accurate enough to give almost optimal rates whether in the central limit theorem for the Wasserstein distance, or in the strong approximation.…
We consider random walks and Lévy processes in a homogeneous group $G$. For all $p > 0$, we completely characterise (almost) all $G$-valued Lévy processes whose sample paths have finite $p$-variation, and give sufficient conditions under which a sequence of $G$-valued random walks converges in law to a Lévy process in $p$-variation topology. In the case that $G$ is the free nilpotent Lie group over $\mathbb{R}^d$, so that processes of finite $p$-variation are identified with rough paths, we demonstrate applications of our results to weak convergence of stochastic flows and provide a Lévy-Khint…
We consider multidimensional discrete valued random walks with nonzero drift killed when leaving general cones of the euclidian space. We find the asymptotics for the exit time from the cone and study weak convergence of the process conditioned on not leaving the cone. We get quasistationarity of its limiting distribution. Finally we construct a version of the random walk conditioned to never leave the cone.
We initiate the study on chemical distances of percolation clusters for level sets of two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free fields as well as loop clusters generated by two-dimensional random walk loop soups. One of our results states that the chemical distance between two macroscopic annuli away from the boundary for the random walk loop soup at the critical intensity is of dimension 1 with positive probability. Our proof method is based on an interesting combination of a theorem of Makarov, isomorphism theory and an entropic repulsion estimate for Gaussian free fields in the presence of a h…
In this paper, a complex-valued measure of bi-product path space induced by quantum walk is presented. In particular, we consider three types of conditional return paths in a power set of the bi-product path space (1) $Λ\times Λ$, (2) $Λ\times Λ'$ and (3) $Λ'\times Λ'$, where $Λ$ is the set of all $2n$-length ($n\in \mathbb{N}$) return paths and $Λ'(\subseteq Λ)$ is the set of all $2n$-length return paths going through $nx$ ($x\in [-1,1]$) at time $n$. We obtain asymptotic behaviors of the complex-valued measures for the situations (1)-(3) which imply two kinds of weak convergence theorems (Th…
We use the concept of unimodular random graph to show that the branching simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ indexed by a critical geometric Galton-Watson tree conditioned to survive is recurrent if and only if $d \leq 4$.
Consider a real-valued branching random walk in the boundary case. Using the techniques developed by Aïdékon and Shi [5], we give two integral tests which describe respectively the lower limits for the minimal position and the upper limits for the associated additive martingale.
We consider a branching random walk (BRW) taking its values in the $\mathtt{b}$-ary rooted tree $\mathbb W_{ \mathtt{b}}$ (i.e. the set of finite words written in the alphabet $\{ 1, \ldots, \mathtt{b} \}$, with $\mathtt{b}\! \geq \! 2$). The BRW is indexed by a critical Galton--Watson tree conditioned to have $n$ vertices; its offspring distribution is aperiodic and is in the domain of attraction of a $γ$-stable law, $γ\in (1, 2]$. The jumps of the BRW are those of a nearest-neighbour null-recurrent random walk on $\mathbb W_{ \mathtt{b}}$ (reflection at the root of $\mathbb W_{ \mathtt{b}}$ …
Using an approximation by a set-valued dynamical system, this paper studies a class of non Markovian and non homogeneous stochastic processes on a finite state space. It provides an unified approach to simulated annealing type processes. It permits to study new models of vertex reinforced random walks and new models of learning in games including Markovian fictitious play.
We study models of continuous time, symmetric, $\Z^d$-valued random walks in random environments. One of our aims is to derive estimates on the decay of transition probabilities in a case where a uniform ellipticity assumption is absent. We consider the case of independent conductances with a polynomial tail near 0, and obtain precise asymptotics for the annealed return probability and convergence times for the random walk confined to a finite box.
We introduce a class of absorption mechanisms and study the behavior of real-valued centered random walks with finite variance that do not get absorbed. In particular, we prove persistence and scaling limit results, which, in many cases of interests, reduce the analysis of the considered situation to well understood classical persistence and scaling limit questions. Our results cover results in Kemperman (1961) and Vysotsky (2015) and can be applied for many more examples.
Let $(Y_n)$ be a sequence of i.i.d. real valued random variables. Reflected random walk $(X_n)$ is defined recursively by $X_0=x \ge 0$, $X_{n+1} = |X_n - Y_{n+1}|$. In this note, we study recurrence of this process, extending a previous criterion. This is obtained by determining an invariant measure of the embedded process of reflections.
In this paper, we provide a methodology for computing the probability distribution of sojourn times for a wide class of Markov chains. Our methodology consists in writing out linear systems and matrix equations for generating functions involving relations with entrance times. We apply the developed methodology to some classes of random walks with bounded integer-valued jumps.
Let $W$ be an integer valued random variable satisfying $E[W] =: δ\geq 0$ and $P(W<0)>0$, and consider a self-interacting random walk that behaves like a simple symmetric random walk with the exception that on the first visit to any integer $x\in \mathbb{Z}$ the size of the next step is an independent random variable with the same distribution as $W$. We show that this self-interacting random walk is recurrent if $δ\leq 1$ and transient if $δ>1$. This is a special case of our main result which concerns the recurrence and transience of excited random walks (or cookie random walks) with non-near…
In the classical leader election procedure all players toss coins independently and those who get tails leave the game, while those who get heads move to the next round where the procedure is repeated. We investigate a generalizion of this procedure in which the labels (positions) of the players who remain in the game are determined using an integer-valued random walk. We study the asymptotics of some relevant quantities for this model such as: the positions of the persons who remained after $n$ rounds; the total number of rounds until all the persons among $1,2,\ldots,M$ leave the game; and t…
We consider real-valued branching random walks and prove a large deviation result for the position of the rightmost particle. The position of the rightmost particle is the maximum of a collection of a random number of dependent random walks. We characterise the rate function as the solution of a variational problem. We consider the same random number of independent random walks, and show that the maximum of the branching random walk is dominated by the maximum of the independent random walks. For the maximum of independent random walks, we derive a large deviation principle as well. It turns o…
We show that the Bernoulli part extraction method can be used to obtain approximate forms of the local limit theorem for sums of independent lattice valued random variables, with effective error term, that is with explicit parameters and universal constants. We also show that our estimates allow to recover Gnedenko and Gamkrelidze local limit theorems. We further establish by this method a local limit theorem with effective remainder for random walks in random scenery.
We focus on the existence and its characterization of limit for a certain critical branching random walks in time-space random environment in 1 dimension which was introduced by Birkner et.al. Each particle performs simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ and branching mechanism depends on the time-space site. The weak limit points of this measure valued processes are characterized as a solution of the non-trivial martingale problem and called super-Brownian motions in random environment by Mytnik.
We are interested in the biased random walk on a supercritical Galton--Watson tree in the sense of Lyons, Pemantle and Peres, and study a phenomenon of slow movement. In order to observe such a slow movement, the bias needs to be random; the resulting random walk is then a tree-valued random walk in random environment. We investigate the recurrent case, and prove, under suitable general integrability assumptions, that upon the system's non-extinction, the maximal displacement of the walk in the first n steps, divided by (log n)^3, converges almost surely to a known positive constant.
We show that any finite-entropy, countable-valued finitary factor of an i.i.d process can also be expressed as a finitary factor of a finite-valued i.i.d process whose entropy is arbitrarily close to the target process. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to a question of van den Berg and Steif about the critical Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. En route, we prove several results about finitary isomorphisms and finitary factors. Our results are developed in a new framework for processes invariant to a permutation group of a countable set satisfying specific properties. This new fram…
This paper is a complement to the studies on the minimum of a real-valued branching random walk. In the boundary case (Biggins, Kyprianou 2005), Aïdékon in a seminal paper (2013) obtained the convergence in law of the minimum after a suitable renormalization. We study here the situation when the log-generating function of the branching random walk explodes at some positive point and it cannot be reduced to the boundary case. In the associated thermodynamics framework this corresponds to a first order phase transition, while the boundary case corresponds to a second order phase transition.
Consider the boundary case in a one-dimensional super-critical branching random walk. It is known that upon the survival of the system, the minimal position after $n$ steps behaves in probability like ${3\over 2} \log n$ when $n\to \infty$. We give a simple and self-contained proof of this result, based exclusively on elementary properties of sums of i.i.d. real-valued random variables.
Let $(ξ_k,η_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T:=(T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k:=ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_{k-1}+η_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$. Consider a general branching process generated by $T$ and denote by $N_j(t)$ the number of the $j$th generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$. We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations $j$ which do not depend on $t$. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell …
We focus on the existence and characterization of the limit for a certain critical branching random walks in time-space random environment in one dimension which was introduced by M. Birnkenr et.al. Each particle performs simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ and branching mechanism depends on the time-space site. The weak limit of this measure valued processes is characterized as a solution to the non-trivial martingale problem and called super-Brownian motions in random environment by L. Mytnik. Moreover, we will show the weak uniqueness of the solutions with some initial condition.
We revisit the multifractal analysis of $\R^d$-valued branching random walks averages by considering subsets of full Hausdorff dimension of the standard level sets, over each infinite branch of which a quantified version of the Erdös-Rényi law of large numbers holds. Assuming that the exponential moments of the increments of the walks are finite, we can indeed control simultaneously such sets when the levels belong to the interior of the compact convex domain $I$ of possible levels, i.e. when they are associated to so-called Gibbs measures, as well as when they belong to the subset $(\partial{…
Let (S_n)_{n\in\N} be a Z-valued random walk with increments from the domain of attraction of some α-stable law and let (ξ(i))_{i\in\Z} be a sequence of iid random variables. We want to investigate U-statistics indexed by the random walk S_n, that is U_n:=\sum_{1\leq i<j\leq n}h(ξ(S_i),ξ(S_j)) for some symmetric bivariate function h. We will prove the weak convergence without assumption of finite variance. Additionally, under the assumption of finite moments of order greater than two, we will establish a law of the iterated logarithm for the U-statistic U_n.
We derive a functional central limit theorem for the excursion of a random walk conditioned on sweeping a prescribed geometric area. We assume that the increments of the random walk are integer-valued, centered, with a third moment equal to zero and a finite fourth moment. This result complements the work of \citep{DKW13} where local central limit theorems are provided for the geometric area of the excursion of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments. Our result turns out to be a key tool to derive the scaling limit of the \emph{Interacting Partially-Directed Self-Avoiding Walk} at …
A natural extension of a right-continuous integer-valued random walk is one which can jump to the right by one or two units. First passage times above a given fixed level then admit a tractable Laplace transform (probability generating function). Explicit expressions for the probabilities that the respective overshoots are either $0$ or $1$, according as the random walk crosses a given level for the first time either continuously or not, also obtain. An interesting non-obvious observation, which follows from the analysis, is that any such (non-degenerate) random walk will, eventually in $n\in …
We prove a law of large numbers for a class of $\Z^d$-valued random walks in dynamic random environments, including non-elliptic examples. We assume for the random environment a mixing property called \emph{conditional cone-mixing} and that the random walk tends to stay inside wide enough space-time cones. The proof is based on a generalization of a regeneration scheme developed by Comets and Zeitouni for static random environments and adapted by Avena, den Hollander and Redig to dynamic random environments. A number of one-dimensional examples are given. In some cases, the sign of the speed c…
We prove that for a random walk on the real line whose increments have zero mean and are either integer-valued or spread out (i.e. the distributions of the steps of the walk are eventually non-singular), the Markov chain of overshoots above a fixed level converges in total variation to its stationary distribution. We find the explicit form of this distribution heuristically and then prove its invariance using a time-reversal argument. If, in addition, the increments of the walk are in the domain of attraction of a non-one-sided $α$-stable law with index $α\in(1,2)$ (resp. have finite variance)…
Deterministic walk in an excited random environment is a non-Markov integer-valued process $(X_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$, whose jump at time $n$ depends on the number of visits to the site $X_n$. The environment can be understood as stacks of cookies on each site of $\mathbb Z$. Once all cookies are consumed at a given site, every subsequent visit will result in a walk taking a step according to the direction prescribed by the last consumed cookie. If each site has exactly one cookie, then the walk ends in a loop if it ever visits the same site twice. If the number of cookies per site is increased to…
Let $M_n$ be the minimal position at generation $n$, of a real-valued branching random walk in the boundary case. As $n \to \infty$, $M_n- {3 \over 2} \log n$ is tight (see [1][9][2]). We establish here a law of iterated logarithm for the upper limits of $M_n$: upon the system's non-extinction, $ \limsup\_{n\to \infty} {1\over \log \log \log n} ( M_n - {3\over2} \log n) = 1$ almost surely. We also study the problem of moderate deviations of $M_n$: $p(M_n- {3 \over 2} \log n > λ)$ for $λ\to \infty$ and $λ=o(\log n)$. This problem is closely related to the small deviations of a class of Mandelbr…
We consider nearest-neighbor random walks on free products of finitely many copies of the integers with amalgamation over nontrivial subgroups. When all the subgroups have index two, we find the Green function of the random walks in terms of complete elliptic integrals. Our technique is to apply Voiculescu's operator--valued R--transform.
In this work we set up the generating function of the ultimate time survival probability $φ(u+1)$, where $$φ(u)=\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{n\geqslant 1}\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(X_i-κ\right)<u\right)$$ and $u\in\mathbb{N}_0,\,κ\in\mathbb{N}$, and the random walk $\left\{\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_i,\,n\in\mathbb{N}\right\}$ consists of independent and identically distributed random variables $X_i$, which are non-negative and integer valued. We also give expressions of $φ(u)$ via the roots of certain polynomials. Based on the proven theoretical statements, we give several examples on $φ(u)$ and its generating functi…
Relative complexity measures the complexity of a probability preserving transformation relative to a factor being a sequence of random variables whose exponential growth rate is the relative entropy of the extension. We prove distributional limit theorems for the relative complexity of certain zero entropy extensions: RWRSs whose associated random walks satisfy the α-stable CLT ($1<α\le2$). The results give invariants for relative isomorphism of these.
Let $(Y_n)$ be a sequence of i.i.d. $\mathbb Z$-valued random variables with law $μ$. The reflected random walk $(X_n)$ is defined recursively by $X_0=x \in \mathbb N_0, X_{n+1}=|X_n+Y_{n+1}|$. Under mild hypotheses on the law $μ$, it is proved that, for any $ y \in \mathbb N_0$, as $n \to +\infty$, one gets $\mathbb P_x[X_n=y]\sim C_{x, y} R^{-n} n^{-3/2}$ when $\sum_{k\in \mathbb Z} kμ(k) >0$ and $\mathbb P_x[X_n=y]\sim C_{y} n^{-1/2}$ when $\sum_{k\in \mathbb Z} kμ(k) =0$, for some constants $R, C_{x, y}$ and $C_y >0$.
We study models of discrete-time, symmetric, $\Z^{d}$-valued random walks in random environments, driven by a field of i.i.d. random nearest-neighbor conductances $ω_{xy}\in[0,1]$, with polynomial tail near 0 with exponent $γ>0$. We first prove for all $d\geq5$ that the return probability shows an anomalous decay (non-Gaussian) that approches (up to sub-polynomial terms) a random constant times $n^{-2}$ when we push the power $γ$ to zero. In contrast, we prove that the heat-kernel decay is as close as we want, in a logarithmic sense, to the standard decay $n^{-d/2}$ for large values of the par…
We survey distributional properties of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued cocycles of finite measure preserving ergodic transformations (or, equivalently, of stationary random walks in $\mathbb{R}^d$) which determine recurrence or transience.
