We prove that the upward ladder height subordinator $H$ associated to a real valued Lévy process $ξ$ has Laplace exponent $ϕ$ that varies regularly at $\infty$ (resp. at 0) if and only if the underlying Lévy process $ξ$ satisfies Sinai's condition at 0 (resp. at $\infty$). Sinai's condition for real valued Lévy processes is the continuous time analogue of Sinai's condition for random walks. We provide several criteria in terms of the characteristics of $ξ$ to determine whether or not it satisfies Sinai's condition. Some of these criteria are deduced from tail estimates of the Lévy measure of $H,$ here obtained, and which are analogous to the estimates of the tail distribution of the ladder height random variable of a random walk which are due to Veraverbeke and Grübel
We show how Rio's method [Probab. Theory Related Fields 104 (1996) 255--282] can be adapted to establish a rate of convergence in ${\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}}$ in the multidimensional central limit theorem for some stationary processes in the sense of the Kantorovich metric. We give two applications of this general result: in the case of the Knudsen gas and in the case of the Sinai billiard.
Understanding the statistical properties of the aperiodic planar Lorentz gas stands as a grand challenge in the theory of dynamical systems. Here we study a greatly simplified but related model, proposed by Arvind Ayyer and popularized by Joel Lebowitz, in which a scatterer configuration on the torus is randomly updated between collisions. Taking advantage of recent progress in the theory of time-dependent billiards on the one hand and in probability theory on the other, we prove a vector-valued almost sure invariance principle for the model. Notably, the configuration sequence can be weakly d…
We prove that the local times of a sequence of Sinai's random walks convergence to those of Brox's diffusion by proper scaling, which is accord with the result of Seignourel (2000). Our proof is based on the convergence of the branching processes in random environment by Kurtz (1979).
We consider the one-sided exit problem for (fractionally) integrated random walks and Lévy processes. We prove that the rate of decrease of the non-exit probability -- the so-called survival exponent -- is universal in this class of processes. In particular, the survival exponent can be inferred from the (fractionally) integrated Brownian motion. This, in particular, extends Sinai's result on the survival exponent for the integrated simple random walk to general random walks with some finite exponential moment. Further, we prove existence and monotonicity of the survival exponent of fractional…
The spectral gap is estimated for measure-valued diffusion processes induced by the intrinsic/extrinsic derivatives on the space of finite measures over a Riemannian manifold. This provides explicit exponential convergence rate for these processes to approximate the Dirichlet and Gamma distributions arising from population genetics.
We prove the Itô-Wentzell formula for processes with values in the space of generalized functions by using the stochastic Fubini theorem and the Itô-Wentzell formula for real-valued processes, appropriate versions of which are also proved.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the weighted least squares estimators of the unknown parameters of bifurcating integer-valued autoregressive processes. Under suitable assumptions on the immigration, we establish the almost sure convergence of our estimators, together with the quadratic strong law and central limit theorems. All our investigation relies on asymptotic results for vector-valued martingales.
We establish a large deviation principle for the solutions of a class of stochastic partial differential equations with non-Lipschitz continuous coefficients. As an application, the large deviation principle is derived for super-Brownian motion and Fleming-Viot processes.
We generalise multivariate subordination of Lévy processes as introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen, Pedersen, and Sato to Hilbert space valued Lévy processes. The processes are explicitly characterised and conditions for integrability and martingale properties are derived under various assumptions of the Lévy process and subordinator. As an application of our theory we construct explicitly some Hilbert space valued versions of Lévy processes which are popular in the univariate and multivariate case. In particular, we define a normal inverse Gaussian Lévy process in Hilbert space as a subordination …
The seminal papers of Pickands [1,2] paved the way for a systematic study of high exceedance probabilities of both stationary and non-stationary Gaussian processes. Yet, in the vector-valued setting, due to the lack of key tools including Slepian's Lemma, Borell-TIS and Piterbarg inequalities there has not been any methodological development in the literature for the study of extremes of vector-valued Gaussian processes. In this contribution we develop the uniform double-sum method for the vector-valued setting obtaining the exact asymptotics of the exceedance probabilities for both stationary…
Ciesielski's isomorphism between the space of alpha-Hölder continuous functions and the space of bounded sequences is used to give an alternative proof of the large deviation principle for Wiener processes with values in Hilbert space.
Skorokhod's M1 topology is defined for càdlàg paths taking values in the space of tempered distributions (more generally, in the dual of a countably Hilbertian nuclear space). Compactness and tightness characterisations are derived which allow us to study a collection of stochastic processes through their projections on the familiar space of real-valued càdlàg processes. It is shown how this topological space can be used in analysing the convergence of empirical process approximations to distribution-valued evolution equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
For real symmetric and complex Hermitian Gaussian processes whose values are $d\times d$ matrices, we characterize the conditions under which the probability that at least $k$ eigenvalues collide is positive for $2\le k\le d$, and we obtain the Hausdorff dimension of the set of collision times.
We show the invalidity of finitary counterparts for three classification theorems: The preservation of being a Bernoulli shift through factors, Sinai's factor theorem, and the weak Pinsker property. We construct a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process which is not finitarily isomorphic to an i.i.d. process, showing that being finitarily Bernoulli is not preserved through finitary factors. This refutes a conjecture of M. Smorodinsky [11], which was first suggested by D. Rudolph [7]. We further show that any ergodic system is isomorphic to a process none of whose finitary factors are i.i.d. proce…
We prove a complete class theorem that characterizes \emph{all} stationary time reversible Markov processes whose finite dimensional marginal distributions (of all orders) are infinitely divisible. Aside from two degenerate cases (iid and constant), in both discrete and continuous time every such process with full support is a branching process with Poisson or Negative Binomial marginal univariate distributions and a specific bivariate distribution at pairs of times. As a corollary, we prove that every nondegenerate stationary integer valued processes constructed by the Markov thinning process…
We consider a special class of mean field SDEs with common noise which depend on the image of the solution (i.e. the conditional distribution given noise). The strong well-posedness is derived under a monotone condition which is weaker than those used in the literature of mean field games, the Feynman-Kac formula is established to solve Schrördinegr type PDEs on $\scr P_2$, and the ergodicity is proved for a class of measure-valued diffusion processes.
Consider a stationary, linear Hilbert space valued process. We establish Berry-Essen type results with optimal convergence rates under sharp dependence conditions on the underlying coefficient sequence of the linear operators. The case of non-linear Bernoulli-shift sequences is also considered. If the sequence is $m$-dependent, the optimal rate $(n/m)^{1/2}$ is reached. If the sequence is weakly geometrically dependent, the rate $(n/\log n)^{1/2}$ is obtained.
A family of continuous-state branching processes with immigration are constructed as the solution flow of a stochastic equation system driven by time-space noises. The family can be regarded as an inhomogeneous increasing path-valued branching process with immigration. Two nonlocal branching immigration superprocesses can be defined from the flow. We identify explicitly the branching and immigration mechanisms of those processes. The results provide new perspectives into the tree-valued Markov processes of Aldous and Pitman [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat. 34 (1998) 637-686] and Abraha…
We examine the probability that at least two eigenvalues of an Hermitian matrix-valued Gaussian process, collide. In particular, we determine sharp conditions under which such probability is zero. As an application, we show that the eigenvalues of a real symmetric matrix-valued fractional Brownian motion of Hurst parameter $H$, collide when $H<1/2$ and don't collide when $H>\frac{1}{2}$, while those of a complex Hermitian fractional Brownian motion collide when $H<\frac{1}{3}$ and don't collide when $H>\frac{1}{3}$. Our approach is based on the relation between hitting probabilities for Gaussi…
In his 1972 paper, John Lamperti characterized all positive self-similar Markov processes as time-changes of exponentials of Levy processes. In the past decade the problem of classifying all non-negative self-similar Markov processes that do not necessarily have zero as a trap has been solved gradually via connections to ladder height processes and excursion theory. Motivated by a recent article of Chaumont, Rivero, Panti we classify via jump-type SDEs the symmetric real-valued self-similar Markov processes that only decrease the absolute value by jumps and leave zero continuously. Our constru…
An $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Markov process $X^{(x)}_t=(X^{1,x_1}_t,\dots,X^{d,x_d}_t)$, $t\ge0,x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be multi-self-similar with index $(α_1,\dots,α_d)\in[0,\infty)^d$ if the identity in law \[(c_iX_t^{i,x_i/c_i};i=1,\dots,d)_{t\ge0}\ed(X_{ct}^{(x)})_{t\ge0}\,,\] where $c=\prod_{i=1}^dc_i^{α_i}$, is satisfied for all $c_1,\dots,c_d>0$ and all starting point $x$. Multi-self-similar Markov processes were introduced by Jacobsen and Yor \cite{jy} in the aim of extending the Lamperti transformation of positive self-similar Markov processes to $\mathbb{R}^d_+$-valued processes. Th…
We consider a particle system in continuous time, discrete population, with spatial motion and nonlocal branching. The offspring's weights and their number may depend on the mother's weight. Our setting captures, for instance, the processes indexed by a Galton-Watson tree. Using a size-biased auxiliary process for the empirical measure, we determine this asymptotic behaviour. We also obtain a large population approximation as weak solution of a growth-fragmentation equation. Several examples illustrate our results.
A class of measure-valued processes which model multilevel populations undergoing mutation, selection, genetic drift and spatial migration is considered. We investigate the qualitative behaviour of models with multilevel selection and the interaction between the different levels of selection. The basic tools in our analysis include the martingale problem formulation for measure-valued processes and a generalization of the set-valued dual representation introduced in Dawson-Greven (2014). In particular we describe the ergodic behaviour of these processes and review some situations under which d…
Since the introduction of Dyson's Brownian motion in early 1960's, there have been a lot of developments in the investigation of stochastic processes on the space of Hermitian matrices. Their properties, especially, the properties of their eigenvalues have been studied in great details. In particular, the limiting behaviors of the eigenvalues are found when the dimension of the matrix space tends to infinity, which connects with random matrix theory. This survey reviews a selection of results on the eigenvalues of stochastic processes from the literature of the past three decades. For most rec…
The purpose of this paper is to construct a Brownian motion $X := (X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ taking values in a Riemannian manifold $M$, together with a compact valued process $D:= (D_t)_{t\geq 0}$ such that, at least for small enough ${\mathscr F}^D$-stopping time $τ> 0$ and conditioned by ${\mathscr F}_τ^D$, the law of $X_τ$ is the normalized Lebesgue measure on $D_τ$. This intertwining result is a generalization of Pitman theorem. We first construct regular intertwined processes related to Stokes' theorem. Then using several limiting procedures we construct synchronous intertwined, free intertwined, …
We study the $G/\mathit{GI}/\infty$ queue in heavy-traffic using tempered distribution-valued processes which track the age and residual service time of each customer in the system. In both cases, we use the continuous mapping theorem together with functional central limit theorem results in order to obtain fluid and diffusion limits for these processes in the space of tempered distribution-valued processes. We find that our diffusion limits are tempered distribution-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes.
This paper investigates the random horizon optimal stopping problem for measure-valued piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). This is motivated by population dynamics applications, when one wants to monitor some characteristics of the individuals in a small population. The population and its individual characteristics can be represented by a point measure. We first define a PDMP on a space of locally finite measures. Then we define a sequence of random horizon optimal stopping problems for such processes. We prove that the value function of the problems can be obtained by iterating …
We construct and study branching Markov processes on the space of finite configurations of the state space of a given standard process, controlled by a branching kernel and a killing one. In particular, we may start with a superprocess, obtaining a branching process with state space the finite configurations of positive finite measures on a topological space. A main tool in proving the path regularity of the branching process is the existence of convenient superharmonic functions having compact level sets, allowing the use of appropriate potential theoretical methods.
Consider on a manifold the solution $X$ of a stochastic differential equation driven by a Lévy process without Brownian part. Sufficient conditions for the smoothness of the law of $X_t$ are given, with particular emphasis on noncompact manifolds. The result is deduced from the case of affine spaces by means of a localisation technique. The particular cases of Lie groups and homogeneous spaces are discussed.
A simple lemma bounds $\mathrm{s.d.}(T)/\mathbb{E} T$ for hitting times $T$ in Markov chains with a certain strong monotonicity property. We show how this lemma may be applied to several increasing set-valued processes. Our main result concerns a model of first passage percolation on a finite graph, where the traversal times of edges are independent Exponentials with arbitrary rates. Consider the percolation time $X$ between two arbitrary vertices. We prove that $\mathrm{s.d.}(X)/\mathbb{E} X$ is small if and only if $Ξ/\mathbb{E} X$ is small, where $Ξ$ is the maximal edge-traversal time in th…
Let $\{X_i(t),t\ge0\}, 1\le i\le n$ be mutually independent centered Gaussian processes with almost surely continuous sample paths. We derive the exact asymptotics of $$ P\left(\exists_{t \in [0,T]} \forall_{i=1 ... n} X_i(t)> u \right) $$ as $u\to\infty$, for both locally stationary $X_i$'s and $X_i$'s with a non-constant generalized variance function. Additionally, we analyze properties of multidimensional counterparts of the Pickands and Piterbarg constants, that appear in the derived asymptotics. Important by-products of this contribution are the vector-process extensions of the Piterbarg …
Representations of branching Markov processes and their measure-valued limits in terms of countable systems of particles are constructed for models with spatially varying birth and death rates. Each particle has a location and a "level," but unlike earlier constructions, the levels change with time. In fact, death of a particle occurs only when the level of the particle crosses a specified level $r$, or for the limiting models, hits infinity. For branching Markov processes, at each time $t$, conditioned on the state of the process, the levels are independent and uniformly distributed on $[0,r]…
Let $X(t)=(X_1(t), \dots, X_n(t)), t\in \mathcal{T}\subset \mathbb{R} $ be a centered vector-valued Gaussian process with independent components and continuous trajectories, and $h(t)=(h_1(t),\dots, h_n(t)), t\in \mathcal{T} $ be a vector-valued continuous function. We investigate the asymptotics of $$\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{t\in \mathcal{T} } \min_{1\leq i\leq n}(X_i(t)+h_i(t))>u\right)$$ as $u\to\infty$. As an illustration to the derived results we analyze two important classes of $X(t)$: with locally-stationary structure and with varying variances of the coordinates, and calculate exact asymp…
This article focuses on a new concept of quadratic variation for processes taking values in a Banach space $B$ and a corresponding covariation. This is more general than the classical one of Métivier and Pellaumail. Those notions are associated with some subspace $χ$ of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B$ with itself. We also introduce the notion of a convolution type process, which is a natural generalization of the Itô process and the concept of $\bar ν_0$-semimartingale, which is a natural extension of the classical notion of semimartingale. The framework is the stochastic calc…
We consider sequences of tree-valued Markov chains that describe evolving genealogies in Cannings models, and we show their convergence in distribution to tree-valued Fleming-Viot processes. Under the conditions of Möhle and Sagitov, this convergence holds for all tree-valued Fleming-Viot processes under consideration in the dust-free case, and for the Fleming-Viot processes with values in the space of distance matrix distributions in the case with dust. Convergence to Fleming-Viot processes with values in the space of marked metric measure spaces in the case with dust is ensured by an additio…
We establish weak and strong law of large numbers for a class of branching symmetric Hunt processes with the branching rate being a smooth measure with respect to the underlying Hunt process, and the branching mechanism being general and state-dependent. Our work is motivated by recent work on strong law of large numbers for branching symmetric Markov processes by Chen-Shiozawa [J. Funct. Anal., 250, 374--399, 2007] and for branching diffusions by Engländer-Harris-Kyprianou [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat., 46, 279--298, 2010]. Our results can be applied to some interesting examples th…
By studying an admissible family of branching mechanisms introduced in Li (2014), we obtain a pruning procedure on Lévy trees. Then we could construct a decreasing Lévy-CRT-valued process $\{{\mathcal T}_t\}$ by pruning Lévy trees and an analogous process $\{{\mathcal T}^*_t\}$ by pruning a critical Lévy tree conditioned to be infinite. Under a regular condition on the admissible family of branching mechanisms, we show that the law of $\{{\mathcal T}_t\}$ at the ascension time can be represented by $\{{\mathcal T}^*_t\}$. The results generalize those studied in Abraham and Delmas (2012).
Let $Z$ be a $H$-valued Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process, $b\colon[0,1]\times H \rightarrow H$ and $h\colon[0,1] \rightarrow H$ be a bounded, Borel measurable functions with $\|b\|_\infty \leq 1$ then $\mathbb E \exp α\left| \int\limits_0^1 b(t, Z_t + h(t)) - b(t, Z_t) \, \mathrm d t \right|_H^2 \leq C$ holds, where the constant $C$ is an absolute constant and $α>0$ depends only on the eigenvalues of the drift term of $Z$ and $\|h\|_\infty$, the norm of $h$, in an explicit way. Using this we furthermore prove a concentration of measure result and estimate the moments of the above integral.
We consider many-server queueing systems with heterogeneous exponential servers and renewal arrivals. The service rate of each server is a random variable drawn from a given distribution. We develop a framework for analyzing the heavy traffic limit of these queues in random environment using probability measure-valued stochastic processes. We introduce the measure-valued fairness process which denotes the proportion of cumulative idleness experienced by servers whose rates fall in a Borel subset of the support of the service rates. It can be shown that these fairness processes do not converge …
In this article, we present a method for approximating affine processes on the cone of positive Hilbert-Schmidt operators using matrix-valued affine processes. By leveraging results from the theory on affine processes with values in the cone of symmetric and positive semi-definite matrices, we construct sequences of finite-rank operator-valued affine processes that converge weakly to the target processes and provide convergence rates for their Laplace transforms using Galerkin approximations of the associated operator-valued generalized Riccati equations. This article not only offers a practic…
This paper concerns a class of Banach valued processes which have finite quadratic variation. The notion introduced here generalizes the classical one, of Métivier and Pellaumail which is quite restrictive. We make use of the notion of $χ$-covariation which is a generalized notion of covariation for processes with values in two Banach spaces $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$. $χ$ refers to a suitable subspace of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$. We investigate some $C^{1}$ type transformations for various classes of stochastic processes admitting a $χ$-quadratic variation and…
The goal of this paper is to develop a theory of graphon-valued stochastic processes, and to construct and analyse a natural class of such processes arising from population genetics. We consider finite populations where individuals change type according to Wright-Fisher resampling. At any time, each pair of individuals is linked by an edge with a probability that is given by a type-connection matrix, whose entries depend on the current empirical type distribution of the entire population via a fitness function. We show that, in the large-population-size limit and with an appropriate scaling of…
Our main result is to prove almost-sure convergence of a stochastic-approximation algorithm defined on the space of measures on a non-compact space. Our motivation is to apply this result to measure-valued Pólya processes (MVPPs, also known as infinitely-many Pólya urns). Our main idea is to use Foster-Lyapunov type criteria in a novel way to generalize stochastic-approximation methods to measure-valued Markov processes with a non-compact underlying space, overcoming in a fairly general context one of the major difficulties of existing studies on this subject. From the MVPPs point of view, our…
We give a de Finetti type representation for exchangeable random coalescent trees (formally described as semi-ultrametrics) in terms of sampling iid sequences from marked metric measure spaces. We apply this representation to define versions of tree-valued Fleming-Viot processes from a $Ξ$-lookdown model. As state spaces for these processes, we use, besides the space of isomorphy classes of metric measure spaces, also the space of isomorphy classes of marked metric measure spaces and a space of distance matrix distributions. This allows to include the case with dust in which the genealogical t…
In a random complete and separable metric space that we call the lookdown space, we encode the genealogical distances between all individuals ever alive in a lookdown model with simultaneous multiple reproduction events. We construct families of probability measures on the lookdown space and on an extension of it that allows to include the case with dust. From this construction, we read off the tree-valued $Ξ$-Fleming-Viot processes and deduce path properties. For instance, these processes usually have a.s. càdlàg paths with jumps at the times of large reproduction events. In the case of comin…
We consider a piecewise-deterministic Markov process (PDMP) with general conditional distribution of inter-occurrence time, which is called a general PDMP here. Our purpose is to establish the theory of measure-valued generator for general PDMPs. The additive functional of a semi-dynamic system (SDS) is introduced firstly, which presents us an analytic tool for the whole paper. The additive functionals of a general PDMP are represented in terms of additive functionals of the SDS. The necessary and sufficient conditions of being a local martingale or a special semimartingale for them are given.…
We derive in this preprint the moment and exponential tail estimates, sufficient conditions for the Non-Central Limit Theorem (NCLT) in the ordinary one-dimensional space as well as in the space of continuous functions for the properly (natural) normalized multi-indexed sums of function of random variables, processes or fields (r.f.), on the other words V-statistics, parametric, in general case. We construct also some examples in order to show the exactness of obtained estimates. We will use the theory of the so-called degenerate approximation of the functions of several variables as well as t…
Let $X=(X_t, t\geq 0)$ be a self-similar Markov process taking values in $\mathbb{R}$ such that the state 0 is a trap. In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a self-similar recurrent extension of $X$ that leaves 0 continuously. The condition is expressed in terms of the associated Markov additive process via the Lamperti-Kiu representation. Our results extend those of Fitzsimmons (2006) and Rivero (2005, 2007) where the existence and uniqueness of a recurrent extension for positive self similar Markov processes were treated. In particular, we descri…
We prove a sufficient set of conditions for a sequence of finite measures on the space of cadlag measure-valued paths to converge to the canonical measure of super-Brownian motion in the sense of convergence of finite-dimensional distributions. The conditions are convergence of the Fourier transform of the $r$-point functions and perhaps convergence of the ``survival probabilities.'' These conditions have recently been shown to hold for a variety of statistical mechanical models, including critical oriented percolation, the critical contact process and lattice trees at criticality, all above t…
