We prove a Kauffman-Murasugi-Thistlethwaite theorem for alternating links in thickened surfaces. It states that any reduced alternating diagram of a link in a thickened surface has minimal crossing number, and any two reduced alternating diagrams of the same link have the same writhe. This result is proved more generally for link diagrams that are adequate, and the proof involves a two-variable generalization of the Jones polynomial for surface links defined by Krushkal. The main result is used to establish the first and second Tait conjectures for links in thickened surfaces and for virtual links.
M. Freedman and V. Krushkal introduced the notion of a "filling" link in a 3-manifold: a link $L$ is filling in $M$ if for any spine $G$ of $M$ disjoint from $L$, $π_1(G)$ injects into $π_1(M \setminus L )$. Freedman and Krushkal show that there exist links in the $3$-torus $T^3$ that satisfy a weaker form of filling, but they leave open the question of whether $T^3$ contains an actual filling link. We answer this question affirmatively by proving in fact that every closed, orientable 3-manifold $M$ with $\operatorname{rank}(π_1(M)) = 3$ contains a filling link.
For $D$ a reduced alternating surface link diagram, we bound the twist number of $D$ in terms of the coefficients of a polynomial invariant. To this end, we introduce a generalization of the homological Kauffman bracket defined by Krushkal. Combined with work of Futer, Kalfagianni, and Purcell, this yields a bound for the hyperbolic volume of a class of alternating surface links in terms of these coefficients.
This article contains general formulas for Tutte and Jones polynomials for families of knots and links given in Conway notation and "portraits of families"-- plots of zeroes of their corresponding Jones polynomials.
The notion of chckerboard colorability for virtual links and abstract links is introduced. We study the Jones polynomials of virtual links and abstruct links. It is proved that a certain property of the Jones polynomials of classical links is valid for virtual links which admit checkerboard colorings.
We give an explicit formula for the Jones polynomial of any rational link in terms of the denominators of the canonical continued fraction of the slope of the given rational link.
We prove that there are only finitely many values of the Jones polynomial of quasi-alternating links of a given determinant. Consequently, we prove that there are only finitely many quasi-alternating links of a given Jones polynomial iff there are only finitely many quasi-alternating links of a given determinant.
We prove that twisting any quasi-alternating link $L$ with no gaps in its Jones polynomial $V_L(t)$ at the crossing where it is quasi-alternating produces a link $L^{*}$ with no gaps in its Jones polynomial $V_{L^*}(t)$. This leads us to conjecture that the Jones polynomial of any prime quasi-alternating link, other than $(2,n)$-torus links, has no gaps. This would give a new property of quasi-alternating links and a simple obstruction criterion for a link to be quasi-alternating. We prove that the conjecture holds for quasi-alternating Montesinos links as well as quasi-alternating links with …
The Jones polynomial $V_{L}(t)$ for an oriented link $L$ is a one-variable Laurent polynomial link invariant discovered by Jones. For any integer $n\ge 3$, we show that: (1) the difference of Jones polynomials for two oriented links which are $C_{n}$-equivalent is divisible by $\left(t-1\right)^{n}\left(t^{2}+t+1\right)\left(t^{2}+1\right)$, and (2) there exists a pair of two oriented knots which are $C_{n}$-equivalent such that the difference of the Jones polynomials for them equals $\left(t-1\right)^{n}\left(t^{2}+t+1\right)\left(t^{2}+1\right)$.
We find approximations by Vassiliev invariants for the coefficients of the Jones polynomial and all specializations of the HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials. Consequently, we obtain approximations of some other link invariants arising from the homology of branched covers of links.
We study near-alternating links whose diagrams satisfy conditions generalized from the notion of semi-adequate links. We extend many of the results known for adequate knots relating their colored Jones polynomials to the topology of essential surfaces and the hyperbolic volume of their complements: we show that the Strong Slope Conjecture is true for near-alternating knots with spanning Jones surfaces, their colored Jones polynomials admit stable coefficients, and the stable coefficients provide two-sided bounds on the volume of the knot complement. We also discuss extensions of these results …
This paper contains general formulae for the reduced relative Tutte, Kauffman bracket and Jones polynomials of families of virtual knots and links given in Conway notation and discussion of a counterexample to the Z-move conjecture of Fenn, Kauffman and Manturov.
We show that if {L_n} is any infinite sequence of links with twist number tau(L_n) and with cyclotomic Jones polynomials of increasing span, then lim sup tau(L_n)=infty. This implies that any infinite sequence of prime alternating links with cyclotomic Jones polynomials must have unbounded hyperbolic volume. The main tool is the multivariable twist--bracket polynomial, which generalizes the Kauffman bracket to link diagrams with open twist sites.
A link is almost alternating if it is non-alternating and has a diagram that can be transformed into an alternating diagram via one crossing change. We give formulas for the first two and last two potential coefficients of the Jones polynomial of an almost alternating link. Using these formulas, we show that the Jones polynomial of an almost alternating link is nontrivial. We also show that either the first two or last two coefficients of the Jones polynomial of an almost alternating link alternate in sign. Finally, we describe conditions that ensure an almost alternating diagram has the fewes…
We obtain bounds on hyperbolic volume for periodic links and Conway sums of alternating tangles. For links that are Conway sums we also bound the hyperbolic volume in terms of the coefficients of the Jones polynomial.
It is a well known result from Thistlethwaite that the Jones polynomial of a non-split alternating link is alternating. We find the right generalization of this result to the case of non-split alternating tangles. More specifically: the Jones polynomial of tangles is valued in a certain skein module, we describe an alternating condition on elements of this skein module, show that it is satisfied by the Jones invariant of the single crossing tangles, and prove that it is preserved by appropriately "alternating" planar algebra compositions. Hence, this condition is satisfied by the Jones polynom…
We give a refined upper bound for the hyperbolic volume of an alternating link in terms of the first three and the last three coefficients of its colored Jones polynomial.
We extend the definition of the colored Jones polynomials to framed links and trivalent graphs in S^3 # k S^2 X S^1 using a state-sum formulation based on Turaev's shadows. Then, we prove that the natural extension of the Volume Conjecture is true for an infinite family of hyperbolic links.
We extend the state models for Jones and Alexander polynomials of classical links to state models of 2-variable polynomials in the case of singular links. Moreover, we extend both of them to polynomials with d+1 variables for long singular knots with exactly d double points. These extensions can detect non-invertibility of long singular knots.
It is known that the colored Jones polynomial of a $+$-adequate link has a well-defined tail consisting of stable coefficients, and that the coefficients of the tail carry geometric and topological information on the $+$-adequate link complement. We show that a power series similar to the tail of the colored Jones polynomial for $+$-adequate links can be defined for $all$ links, and that it is trivial if and only if the link is non $+$-adequate.
We show that the head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of adequate links are the product of head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of alternating links that can be read-off an adequate diagram of the link. We apply this to strengthen a theorem of Kalfagianni, Futer and Purcell on the fiberedness of adequate links.
A state generating is introduced to determine the Jones polynomial of a link. Formulae for two infinite families of knots are shown by applying this method, the second family of which are proved to be non-alternating. Moreover, the method is generalized to compute the Jones-Kauffman polynomial of a virtual link. As examples, formulae for one infinite family of virtual knots are given.
We prove that the coefficients of the colored Jones polynomial of alternating links stabilize under increasing the number of twists in the twist regions of the link diagram. This gives us an infinite family of $q$-power series derived from the colored Jones polynomial parametrized by the color and the twist regions of the alternating link diagram.
Using the colored Kauffman skein relation, we study the highest and lowest $4n$ coefficients of the $n^{th}$ unreduced colored Jones polynomial of alternating links. This gives a natural extension of a result by Kauffman in regard with the Jones polynomial of alternating links and its highest and lowest coefficients. We also use our techniques to give a new and natural proof for the existence of the tail of the colored Jones polynomial for alternating links.
We give a new upper bound on the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of a fibered positive link. In particular, we prove that the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of a fibered positive knot is at most four times the minimum degree. Using this result, we can complete the classification of all knots of crossing number $\leq 12$ as positive or not positive, by showing that the seven remaining knots for which positivity was unknown are not positive. That classification was also done independently at around the same time by Stoimenow.
We extend the Kamada-Miyazawa polynomial to virtual singular links, which is valued in $\mathbb{Z}[A^2, A^{-2}, h]$. The decomposition of the resulting polynomial into two components, one in $\mathbb{Z}[A^2, A^{-2}]$ and the other in $\mathbb{Z}[A^2, A^{-2}]h$ yields the decomposition of the Kauffman-Jones polynomial of virtual singular links into two components, one in $\mathbb{Z}[A^2, A^{-2}]$ and the other in $\mathbb{Z}[A^2, A^{-2}]A^2$, where both components are invariants for virtual singular links.
The extreme degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of any link are bounded in terms of concrete data from any link diagram. It is known that these bounds are sharp for semi-adequate diagrams. One of the goals of this paper is to show the converse; if the bounds are sharp then the diagram is semi-adequate. As a result, we use colored Jones link polynomials to extract an invariant that detects semi-adequate links and discuss some applications.
It is known that the Kauffman-Murasugi-Thislethwaite type inequality becomes an equality for any (possibly virtual) adequate link diagram. We refine this condition. As an application we obtain a criterion for virtual link diagram with exactly one virtual crossing to represent a properly virtual link.
The colored $\mathfrak{sl}_{3}$ Jones polynomial $J_{(n_{1}, n_{2})}^{\mathfrak{sl}_{3}}(L;q)$ are given by a link and an $(n_{1}, n_{2})$-irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_{3}$. In general, it is hard to calculate $J_{(n_{1}, n_{2})}^{\mathfrak{sl}_{3}}(L;q)$ for an oriented link $L$. However, we calculate the one-row $\mathfrak{sl}_{3}$ colored Jones polynomials $J_{(n, 0)}^{\mathfrak{sl}_{3}}(P(α,β,γ);q)$ for three-parameter families of oriented pretzel links $P(α,β,γ)$ by using Kuperberg's linear skein theory by setting $n_{2}=0$. Furthermore, we show the existence of the tails …
This paper continues the study of periodic links started in \cite{Politarczyk2}. It contains a study of the equivariant analogues of the Jones polynomial, which can be obtained from the equivariant Khovanov homology. In this paper we describe basic properties of such polynomials, show that they satisfy an analogue of the skein relation and develop a state-sum formula. The skein relation in the equivariant case is used to strengthen the periodicity criterion of Przytycki from \cite{Przytycki}. The state-sum formula is used to reproved the classical congruence of Murasugi from \cite{Murasugi1}.
For an oriented virtual link, L.H. Kauffman defined the f-polynomial (Jones polynomial). The supporting genus of a virtual link diagram is the minimal genus of a surface in which the diagram can be embedded. In this paper we show that the span of the f-polynomial of an alternating virtual link L is determined by the number of crossings of any alternating diagram of L and the supporting genus of the diagram. It is a generalization of Kauffman-Murasugi-Thistlethwaite's theorem. We also prove a similar result for a virtual link diagram that is obtained from an alternating virtual link diagram by …
Twisted links are obtained from a base link by starting with a $n$-braid representation, choosing several ($m$) adjacent strands, and applying one or more twists to the set. Various restrictions may be applied, e.g. the twists may be required to be positive or full twists, or the base braid may be required to have a certain form. The Jones polynomial of full $m$-twisted links have some interesting properties. It is known that when sufficiently many full $m$-twists are added that the coefficients break up into disjoint blocks which are independent of the number of full twists. These blocks are …
Using an involved study of the Jones polynomial, we determine, as our main result, the crossing numbers of (prime) amphicheiral knots. As further applications, we show that several classes of links, including semiadequate links and Whitehead doubles of semiadequate knots, have non-trivial Jones polynomial. We also prove that there are infinitely many positive knots with no positive minimal crossing diagrams. Some relations to the twist number of a link, Mahler measure and the hyperbolic volume are given, for example explicit upper bounds on the volume for Montesinos and 3-braid links in terms …
Kuperberg introduced web spaces for some Lie algebras which are generalizations of the Kauffman bracket skein module on a disk with marked points. We derive some formulas for $A_1$ and $A_2$ clasped web spaces by graphical calculus using skein theory. These formulas are colored version of skein relations, twist formulas and bubble skein expansion formulas. We calculate the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ colored Jones polynomials of $2$-bridge knots and links explicitly using twist formulas.
Given any diagram of a link, we define on the cube of Kauffman's states a "2-complex" whose homology is an invariant of the associated framed links, and such that the graded Euler characteristic reproduces the unnormalized Kauffman bracket. This includes a categorification of brackets skein relation. Then we incorporate the orientation information and get a further complex on the same cube that gives rise to a new invariant homology for oriented links, so that the graded Euler characteristic reproduces the unnormalized Jones polynomial in Kauffman's version. Finally we clarify the relations be…
We present a new 2-variable generalization of the Jones polynomial that can be defined through the skein relation of the Jones polynomial. The well-definedness of this new generalization is proved both algebraically and diagrammatically as well as via a closed combinatorial formula. This new invariant is able to distinguish more pairs of non-isotopic links than the original Jones polynomial such as the Thistlethwaite link from the unlink with two components.
We give sharp two-sided linear bounds of the crosscap number (non-orientable genus) of alternating links in terms of their Jones polynomial. Our estimates are often exact and we use them to calculate the crosscap numbers for several infinite families of alternating links and for several alternating knots with up to twelve crossings. We also discuss generalizations of our results for classes of non-alternating links.
We provide a new bound on the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial of a positive link with second Jones coefficient equal to $\pm 1$ or $\pm 2$. This builds upon the result of our previous work, in which we found such a bound for positive fibered links. We also show that each of these three bounds obstruct positivity for infinitely many almost-positive diagrams, allowing us to classify infinitely many knots as almost-positive.
We show that after stabilizations of opposite parity and braid isotopy, any two braids in the same topological link type cobound embedded annuli. We use this to prove the generalized Jones conjecture relating the braid index and algebraic length of closed braids within a link type, following a reformulation of the problem by Kawamuro.

This paper will be an exposition of the Kauffman bracket polynomial model of the Jones polynomial, tangle methods for computing the Jones polynomial, and the use of these methods to produce non-trivial links that cannot be detected by the Jones polynomial.
Habiro gave principal ideals of Z[q,q^{-1}] in which certain linear combinations of the colored Jones polynomials of algebraically-split links take values. The author proved that the same linear combinations for ribbon links, boundary links and Brunnian links are contained in smaller ideals of Z[q,q^{-1}] generated by several elements. In this paper, we prove that these ideals also are principal, each generated by a product of cyclotomic polynomials.
The Jones polynomial and Khovanov homology of a classical link are invariants that depend upon an initial choice of orientation for the link. In this paper, we give a Khovanov homology theory for unoriented virtual links. The graded Euler characteristic of this homology is proportional to a similarly-defined unoriented Jones polynomial for virtual links, which is a new invariant in the category of non-classical virtual links. The unoriented Jones polynomial continues to satisfy an important property of the usual one: for classical or even virtual links, the unoriented Jones polynomial evaluate…
We construct an action of a polynomial ring on the colored sl(2) link homology of Cooper-Krushkal, over which this homology is finitely generated. We define a new, related link homology which is finite dimensional, extends to tangles, and categorifies a scalar-multiple of the sl(2) Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant. We expect this homology to be functorial under 4-dimensional cobordisms. The polynomial action is related to a conjecture of Gorsky-Oblomkov-Rasmussen-Shende on the stable Khovanov homology of torus knots, and as an application we obtain a weak version of this conjecture. A key new ingr…
The present paper show that Conway-Coxeter friezes of zigzag type are characterized by (unoriented) rational links. As an application of this characterization Jones polynomial can be defined for Conway-Coxeter friezes of zigzag type. This gives a new method for computing the Jones polynomial for oriented rational links.
For every n-component ribbon link L we prove that the Jones polynomial V(L) is divisible by the polynomial V(O^n) of the trivial link. This integrality property allows us to define a generalized determinant det V(L) := [V(L)/V(O^n)]_(t=-1), for which we derive congruences reminiscent of the Arf invariant: every ribbon link L = (K_1,...,K_n) satisfies det V(L) = det(K_1) >... det(K_n) modulo 32, whence in particular det V(L) = 1 modulo 8. These results motivate to study the power series expansion V(L) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty d_k(L) h^k at t=-1, instead of t=1 as usual. We obtain a family of link in…
Bing doubling is an operation which gives a satellite of a knot. It is also applied to a link by specifying a component of the link. We give a formula to compute the reduced colored Jones polynomial of a Bing double by using that of the companion. This formula enables us to compute a lot of examples of the reduced colored Jones polynomial of Bing doubles. Moreover, from this formula we can derive a divisibility property of the unified Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of integral homology spheres obtained by \pm1 surgery along Bing doubles of knots. This result is applied to the Witten-Reshe…
A braid-like isotopy for links in 3-space is an isotopy which uses only those Reidemeister moves which occur in isotopies of braids. We define a refined Jones polynomial and its corresponding Khovanov homology which are, in general, only invariant under braid-like isotopies.
We give an alternate expansion of the colored Jones polynomial of pretzel links which recovers the degree formula in arXiv:1807.00957. As an application, we determine the degrees of the colored Jones polynomials of a new family of 3-tangle pretzel knots.
