We obtain bounds on hyperbolic volume for periodic links and Conway sums of alternating tangles. For links that are Conway sums we also bound the hyperbolic volume in terms of the coefficients of the Jones polynomial.
The present paper show that Conway-Coxeter friezes of zigzag type are characterized by (unoriented) rational links. As an application of this characterization Jones polynomial can be defined for Conway-Coxeter friezes of zigzag type. This gives a new method for computing the Jones polynomial for oriented rational links.
This article contains general formulas for Tutte and Jones polynomials for families of knots and links given in Conway notation and "portraits of families"-- plots of zeroes of their corresponding Jones polynomials.
The purpose of this paper is to present a certain combinatorial method of constructing invariants of isotopy classes of oriented tame links. This arises as a generalization of the known polynomial invariants of Conway and Jones. These invariants have one striking common feature. If L+, L- and L0 are diagrams of oriented links which are identical, except near one crossing point (as in Conway or Jones polynomials), then an invariant w(L) has the property: w(L+) is uniquely determined by w(L-) and w(L0), and also w(L-) is uniquely determined by w(L+) and w(L0). To formalize this property we intro…
We proved by computer enumeration that the Jones polynomial distinguishes the unknot for knots up to 22 crossings. Following an approach of Yamada, we generated knot diagrams by inserting algebraic tangles into Conway polyhedra, computed their Jones polynomials by a divide-and-conquer method, and tested those with trivial Jones polynomials for unknottedness with the computer program SnapPy. We employed numerous novel strategies for reducing the computation time per knot diagram and the number of knot diagrams to be considered. That made computations up to 21 crossings possible on a single proc…
This paper contains general formulae for the reduced relative Tutte, Kauffman bracket and Jones polynomials of families of virtual knots and links given in Conway notation and discussion of a counterexample to the Z-move conjecture of Fenn, Kauffman and Manturov.
We present an easy example of mutant links with different Khovanov homology. The existence of such an example is important because it shows that Khovanov homology cannot be defined with a skein rule similar to the skein relation for the Jones polynomial.
Using the recent Gauss diagram formulas for Vassiliev invariants of Polyak-Viro-Fiedler and combining these formulas with the Bennequin inequality, we prove several inequalities for positive knots relating their Vassiliev invariants, genus and degrees of the Jones polynomial. As a consequence, we prove that for any of the polynomials of Alexander/Conway, Jones, HOMFLY, Brandt-Lickorish-Millett-Ho and Kauffman there are only finitely many positive knots with the same polynomial and no positive knot with trivial polynomial. We also discuss an extension of the Bennequin inequality, showing that t…
Nahm sums are $q$-series of a special hypergeometric type that appear in character formulas in Conformal Field Theory, and give rise to elements of the Bloch group, and have interesting modularity properties. In our paper, we show how Nahm sums arise naturally in Quantum Knot Theory, namely we prove the stability of the coefficients of the colored Jones polynomial of an alternating link and present a Nahm sum formula for the resulting power series, defined in terms of a reduced diagram of the alternating link. The Nahm sum formula comes with a computer implementation, illustrated in numerous e…
Genus 2 mutation is the process of cutting a 3-manifold along an embedded closed genus 2 surface, twisting by the hyper-elliptic involution, and gluing back. This paper compares genus 2 mutation with the better-known Conway mutation in the context of knots in the 3-sphere. Despite the fact that any Conway mutation can be achieved by a sequence of at most two genus 2 mutations, the invariants that are preserved by genus 2 mutation are a proper subset of those preserved by Conway mutation. In particular, while the Alexander and Jones polynomials are preserved by genus 2 mutation, the HOMFLY-PT p…
We show that the family of colored Jones polynomials of the closure of a braid compute weighted sums of abelianized Lefschetz numbers associated with the action of the braid on configuration spaces. The sum is over the number of configuration points. Then we interpret this sum in terms of Poincare--Lefschetz duality intersection pairing between homology classes.

We formulate a conjecture (already proven by A. Kricker) about the structure of Kontsevich integral of a knot. We describe its value in terms of the generating functions for the numbers of external edges attached to closed 3-valent diagrams. We conjecture that these functions are rational functions of the exponentials of their arguments, their denominators being the powers of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. This conjecture implies the existence of an expansion of a colored Jones (HOMFLY) polynomial in powers of q-1 whose coefficients are rational functions of q^color. We show how to derive th…
Let $X$ be a $(2+1)$-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime with a Cauchy surface $Σ$ whose universal cover is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$. We provide empirical evidence suggesting that the Jones polynomial detects causality in $X$. We introduce a new invariant of certain tangles related to the Conway polynomial, and prove that the Conway polynomial does not detect the connected sum of two Hopf links among relevant 3-component links, which suggests that the Conway polynomial does not detect causality in the scenario described.
The Volume conjecture claims that the hyperbolic Volume of a knot is determined by the colored Jones polynomial. The purpose of this article is to show a Volume-ish theorem for alternating knots in terms of the Jones polynomial, rather than the colored Jones polynomial: The ratio of the Volume and certain sums of coefficients of the Jones polynomial is bounded from above and from below by constants. Furthermore, we give experimental data on the relation of the growths of the hyperbolic volume and the coefficients of the Jones polynomial, both for alternating and non-alternating knots.
We study near-alternating links whose diagrams satisfy conditions generalized from the notion of semi-adequate links. We extend many of the results known for adequate knots relating their colored Jones polynomials to the topology of essential surfaces and the hyperbolic volume of their complements: we show that the Strong Slope Conjecture is true for near-alternating knots with spanning Jones surfaces, their colored Jones polynomials admit stable coefficients, and the stable coefficients provide two-sided bounds on the volume of the knot complement. We also discuss extensions of these results …
The motivation for this work was to construct a nontrivial knot with trivial Jones polynomial. Although that open problem has not yielded, the methods are useful for other problems in the theory of knot polynomials. The subject of the present paper is a generalization of Conway's mutation of knots and links. Instead of flipping a 2-strand tangle, one flips a many-string tangle to produce a generalized mutant. In the presence of rotational symmetry in that tangle, the result is called a "rotant". We show that if a rotant is sufficiently simple, then its Jones polynomial agrees with that of the …
In a recent paper, Allen and Swenberg investigated which link polynomials are capable of detecting causality in (2+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes. They ultimately suggested it is likely that the Jones Polynomial accomplishes this, while the Alexander-Conway polynomial, independently, is insufficient. As the Alexander-Conway polynomial on its own is not likely to detect causality an additional piece of information must be supplemented to the link polynomial. This paper aims to examine the ability of Alexander quandles, to distinguish the connected sum of two Hopf links and Allen-…
A generalization of the volume conjecture relates the asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomial of a knot to the Chern--Simons invariant and the Reidemeister torsion of the knot complement associated with a representation of the fundamental group to the special linear group of degree two over complex numbers. If the knot is hyperbolic, the representation can be regarded as a deformation of the holonomy representation that determines the complete hyperbolic structure. In this article we study a similar phenomenon when the knot is a twice-iterated torus knot. In this case, the asymptot…
For a positive braid link, a link represented as a closed positive braids, we determine the first few coefficients of its HOMFLY polynomial in terms of geometric invariants such as, the maximum euler characteristics, the number of split factors, and the number of prime factors. Our results give improvements of known results for Conway and Jones polynomial of positive braid links. In Appendix, we present a simpler proof of theorem of Cromwell, a positive braid diagram represent composite link if and only if the the diagram is composite.
Associated with each oriented link is the two variable Homflypt polynomial. The Morton-Franks-Williams (MFW) inequality gives rise to an expression for the Homflypt polynomial with MFW coefficient polynomials. These MFW coefficient polynomials are labelled in a braid-dependent manner and may be zero, but display a number of interesting relations. One consequence is an expression for the first three Laurent coefficient polynomials in z as a function of the other coefficient polynomials and three link invariants: the minimum v-degree and v-span of the Homflypt polynomial, and the Conway polynomi…
We show that the link invariants derived from 3-dimensional quantum hyperbolic geometry can be defined by means of planar state sums based on link diagrams and a new family of enhanced Yang-Baxteroperators (YBO) that we compute explicitly. By a local comparison of the respective YBO's we show that these invariants coincide with the Kashaev specializations of the colored Jones polynomials. As a further application we disprove a conjecture about the semi-classical limits of quantum hyperbolic partition functions, by showing that it conflicts with the existence of hyperbolic links that verify the…
S. Gukov and C. Manolescu conjectured that the Melvin-Morton-Rozansky expansion of the colored Jones polynomials can be re-summed into a two-variable series $F_K(x,q)$, which is the knot complement version of the 3-manifold invariant $\hat{Z}$ whose existence was predicted earlier by S. Gukov, P. Putrov and C. Vafa. In this paper we use an inverted version of the R-matrix state sum to prove this conjecture for a big class of links that includes all homogeneous braid links as well as all fibered knots up to 10 crossings. We also study an inverted version of Habiro's cyclotomic series that leads…
We construct {\it quantum hyperbolic invariants} (QHI) for triples $(W,L,ρ)$, where $W$ is a compact closed oriented 3-manifold, $ρ$ is a flat principal bundle over $W$ with structural group $PSL(2,\mc)$, and $L$ is a non-empty link in $W$. These invariants are based on the Faddeev-Kashaev's {\it quantum dilogarithms}, interpreted as matrix valued functions of suitably decorated hyperbolic ideal tetrahedra. They are explicitely computed as state sums over the decorated hyperbolic ideal tetrahedra of the {\it idealization} of any fixed {\it $\Dd$-triangulation}; the $\Dd$-triangulations are sim…
Explicit answer is given for the HOMFLY polynomial of the figure eight knot $4_1$ in arbitrary symmetric representation R=[p]. It generalizes the old answers for p=1 and 2 and the recently derived results for p=3,4, which are fully consistent with the Ooguri-Vafa conjecture. The answer can be considered as a quantization of the σ_R = σ_{[1]}^{|R|} identity for the "special" polynomials (they define the leading asymptotics of HOMFLY at q=1), and arises in a form, convenient for comparison with the representation of the Jones polynomials as sums of dilogarithm ratios. In particular, we construct…
