We study the interaction between the stability, and the propagation of regularity, for solutions to the incompressible 3D Euler equation. It is still unknown whether a solution with smooth initial data can develop a singularity in finite time. This article explains why the prediction of such a blow-up, via direct numerical experiments, is so difficult. It is described how, in such a scenario, the solution becomes unstable as time approaches the blow-up time.
This paper construct a family of explicit self-similar blowup axisymmetric solutions for the 3D incompressible Euler equations in R^3. Those singular solutions admit infinite energy.
We exclude Type I blow-up, which occurs in the form of atomic concentrations of the $L^2$ norm for the solution of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. As a corollary we prove nonexistence of discretely self-similar blow-up in the energy conserving scale.
We partially answer a question raised by Kiselev and Zlatos in \cite{MR2180809}; in the generalized dyadic model of the Euler equation, a blow-up of $H^{1/3+δ}$-norm occurs. We recover a few previous blow-up results for various related dyadic models as corollaries.
A second-order PDE is derived from Euler's equaitons under certain assumptions. It is shown that this PDE admits shock and rarefaction waves, and that a single point gradient blow-up admits a unique similarity extension after blow-up that settles uniqueness/entropy issues for such equations.
We study behaviors of scalar quantities near the possible blow-up time, which is made of smooth solutions of the Euler equations, Navier-Stokes equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations. Integrating the dynamical equations of the scaling invariant norms, we derive the possible blow-up behaviors of the above quantities, from which we obtain new type of blow-up criteria and some necessary conditions for the blow-up.
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
We prove the finite time blow-up for $C^1$ solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n\geq 1$, with/without background density for initial data satisfying suitable conditions. We also find a sufficient condition for the initial data such that $C^3$ solution breaks down in finite time for the compressible Euler equations for polytropic gas flows.
We give a vorticity-dynamical proof of $C^1\cap H^2$-illposedness of the 2D Euler equations. Our construction shows that the unique Yudovich solution escapes both $C^1$ and $H^2$ instantaneously.
We find a smooth solution of the 2D Euler equation on a bounded domain which exists and is unique in a natural class locally in time, but blows up in finite time in the sense of its vorticity losing continuity. The domain's boundary is smooth except at two points, which are interior cusps.
We improve the recent result of Chae & Tadmor in [Comm. Math. Sci. 6(3) (2008) 785-789], proving a one-sided threshold condition which leads to finite-time breakdown of the Euler-Poisson equations in arbitrary dimension n.
In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations is ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.
In this paper we derive kinematic relations for quantities involving the rate of strain tensor and the Hessian of the pressure for solutions of the 3D Euler equations and the 2D Boussinesq equations. Using these kinematic relations, we prove new blow up criteria and obtain conditions for the absence of type I singularity for these equations. We obtain both global and localized versions of the results. Some of the new blow up criteria and type I conditions improve previous results of [3].
We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
In this paper we study the finite time blow-up problem for the axisymmetric 3D incompressible Euler equations with swirl. The evolution equations for the deformation tensor and the vorticity are reduced considerably in this case. Under the assumption of local minima for the pressure on the axis of symmetry with respect to the radial variations we show that the solution blows-up in finite time. If we further assume that the second radial derivative vanishes on the axis, then system reduces to the form of Constantin-Lax-Majda equations, and can be integrated explicitly.
In connection with the recent proposal for possible singularity formation at the boundary for solutions of 3d axi-symmetric incompressible Euler's equations (Luo and Hou, 2013), we study models for the dynamics at the boundary and show that they exhibit a finite-time blow-up from smooth data.
In this note we study locally self-similar blow up for the Euler equation. The main result states that under a mild $L^p$-growth assumption on the profile $v$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^p dy \lesssim L^{\g}$ for some $\g <p-2$, the self-similar solution carries a positive amount of energy up to the time of blow-up $T$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^2 dy \sim L^{N-2\a}$. The result implies and extends several previously known exclusion criteria. It also supports a general conjecture relating fractal local dimensions of the energy measure with the rate of velocity growth at the time of pos…
Singularity formation of the 3D incompressible Euler equations is known to be extremely challenging. In [18], Elgindi proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations with no swirl and $C^{1,α}$ initial velocity develops a finite time singularity. Inspired by Elgindi's work, we proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler and 2D Boussinesq equations with $C^{1,α}$ initial velocity and boundary develop a stable asymptotically (or approximately) self-similar finite time singularity [8]. On the other hand, the authors of [35,52] recently showed that blowup solutions to the 3D Euler equations are hydrodyn…
The question of the global regularity vs finite time blow up in solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equation is a major open problem of modern applied analysis. In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional models of the axisymmetric hyperbolic boundary blow up scenario for the 3D Euler equation proposed by Hou and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations. These models generalize the 1D Hou-Luo model suggested in Hou & Luo's paper, for which finite time blow up has been established in the paper by Kyudong Choi, Thomas Y. Hou, Alexander Kiselev, Guo Luo, Vladimir Sverak, Yao Yao. …
We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario o…
We study a 1D model for the 3D incompressible Euler equations in axisymmetric geometries, which can be viewed as a local approximation to the Euler equations near the solid boundary of a cylindrical domain. We prove the local well-posedness of the model in spaces of zero-mean functions, and study the potential formation of a finite-time singularity under certain convexity conditions for the velocity field. It is hoped that the results obtained on the 1D model will be useful in the analysis of the full 3D problem, whose loss of regularity in finite time has been observed in a recent numerical s…
In this paper we study the Euler-Poincaré equations in $\Bbb R^N$. We prove local existence of weak solutions in $W^{2,p}(\Bbb R^N),$ $p>N$, and local existence of unique classical solutions in $H^k (\Bbb R^N)$, $k>N/2+3$, as well as a blow-up criterion. For the zero dispersion equation($α=0$) we prove a finite time blow-up of the classical solution. We also prove that as the dispersion parameter vanishes, the weak solution converges to a solution of the zero dispersion equation with sharp rate as $α\to0$, provided that the limiting solution belongs to $C([0, T);H^k(\Bbb R^N))$ with $k>N/2 +3$…
Inspired by the numerical evidence of a potential 3D Euler singularity \cite{luo2014potentially,luo2013potentially-2}, we prove finite time singularity from smooth initial data for the HL model introduced by Hou-Luo in \cite{luo2014potentially,luo2013potentially-2} for the 3D Euler equations with boundary. Our finite time blowup solution for the HL model and the singular solution considered in \cite{luo2014potentially,luo2013potentially-2} share some essential features, including similar blowup exponents, symmetry properties of the solution, and the sign of the solution. We use a dynamical res…
The question of spontaneous apparition of singularity in the 3D incompressible Euler equations is one of the most important and challenging open problems in mathematical fluid mechanics. In this survey article we review some of recent approaches to the problem. We first review Kato's classical local well-posedness result in the Sobolev space and derive the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for finite time blow-up. Then, we discuss recent refinements of the criterion as well as geometric type of theorems on the sufficiency condition for the regularity of solutions. After that we review resu…
In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and blowup of smooth solutions of the 3-D compressible Euler equation with time-depending damping $$ \partial_tρ+\operatorname{div}(ρu)=0, \quad \partial_t(ρu)+\operatorname{div}\left(ρu\otimes u+p\,I_{3}\right)=-\,\fracμ{(1+t)^λ}\,ρu, \quad ρ(0,x)=\bar ρ+\varepsilonρ_0(x),\quad u(0,x)=\varepsilon u_0(x), $$ where $x\in\mathbb R^3$, $μ>0$, $λ\geq 0$, and $\barρ>0$ are constants, $ρ_0,\, u_0\in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb R^3)$, $(ρ_0, u_0)\not\equiv 0$, $ρ(0,\cdot)>0$, and $\varepsilon>0$ is sufficiently small. For $0\leqλ\leq1$, we show that …
We investigate the role of convection on its large time behavior of 3D incompressible Euler equations. In \cite{HL09a}, we constructed a new 3D model by neglecting the convection term from the reformulated axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. This model preserves almost all the properties of the full Navier-Stokes equations, including an energy identity for smooth solutions. The numerical evidence presented in \cite{HL09a} seems to support that the 3D model may develop a finite time singularity. In this paper, we prove rigorously that the 3D inviscid model develops a finite time singularity f…
In this paper, we study the finite time blowup of the generalized Euler ODE in the matrix geometry. We can extend Sullivan's result which is about the finite time blowup result of initial invertible linear operators to singular linear operators. we can give a complete answer to the question of Sullivan in the case when the initial matrix A is symmetric in the finite dimensional vector space W. Some open questions are proposed in the last part of the paper.
In the language of differential geometry, the incompressible inviscid Euler equations can be written in vorticity-vector potential form as \begin{align*} \partial_t ω+ {\mathcal L}_u ω&= 0\\ u &= δ\tilde η^{-1} Δ^{-1} ω\end{align*} where $ω$ is the vorticity $2$-form, ${\mathcal L}_u$ denotes the Lie derivative with respect to the velocity field $u$, $Δ$ is the Hodge Laplacian, $δ$ is the codifferential (the negative of the divergence operator), and $\tilde η^{-1}$ is the canonical map from $2$-forms to $2$-vector fields induced by the Euclidean metric $η$. In this paper we consider a generali…
In this paper, we consider some blow-up problems for the 1D Euler equation with time and space dependent damping. We investigate sufficient conditions on initial data and the rate of spatial or time-like decay of the coefficient of damping for the occurrence of the finite time blow-up. In particular, our sufficient conditions ensure that the derivative blow-up occurs in finite time with the solution itself and the pressure bounded. Our method is based on simple estimates with Riemann invariants. Furthermore, we give sharp lower and upper estimates of the lifespan of solutions, when initial dat…
We study the stability of recently constructed self-similar blow-up solutions to the incompressible Euler equation. A consequence of our work is the existence of finite-energy $C^{1,α}$ solutions that become singular in finite time in a locally self-similar manner. As a corollary, we also observe that the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion cannot be improved in the class of $C^{1,α}$ solutions.
In this article, we study the blowup phenomena of compressible Euler equations with non-vacuum initial data. Our new results, which cover a general class of testing functions, present new initial value blowup conditions. The corresponding blowup results of the 1-dimensional case in non-radial symmetry are also included.
We are concerned with the critical threshold phenomena in the Restricted Euler (RE) equations. Using the spectral and trace dynamics we identify the critical thresholds for 3D and the 4D restricted Euler equations. It is well known that the 3D RE solutions blow up. Projected on the 3-sphere, the set of initial eigenvalues which give rise to bounded stable solutions is reduced to a single point, which confirms that 3D RE blowup is generic. In contrast, we identify a surprisingly rich set of the initial spectrum on the 4-sphere which yields global smooth solutions; thus, 4D regularity is generic…
Classical vorticity solution branches of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equation are constructed where a velocity component can blow up at some point after finite time for regular data in H2. Furthermore, vorticity can blow up after finite time for data in H2, and there are classical solution branches with regular data which develop weak singularities at some point of space time after finite time. The construction of these time-local solution branches is by viscosity limits of viscosity extensions of time-reversed Euler-type equations. The short time (weak) singularities are then i…
