Let $X$ be an elliptic surface over ${\bf P}^1$ with $κ(X)=1$, and $M=M(c_2)$ be the moduli scheme of rank-two stable sheaves $E$ on $X$ with $(c_1(E),c_2(E))=(0,c_2)$ in $\operatorname{Pic}(X)\times\mathbb{Z}$. We look into defining equations of $M$ at its singularity $E$, partly because if $M$ admits only canonical singularities, then the Kodaira dimension $κ(M)$ can be calculated. We show the following.
(A) $E$ is at worst canonical singularity of $M$ if the restriction of $E_η$ to the generic fiber of $X$ has no rank-one subsheaf, and if the number of multiple fibers of $X$ is a few.
(B) We obtain that $κ(M)=\{1+\dim(M)\}/2$ and the Iitaka program of $M$ can be described in purely moduli-theoretic way for $c_2\gg 0$, when $χ({\mathcal O}_X)=1$, $X$ has just two multiple fibers, and one of its multiplicities equals $2$.
(C) On the other hand, when $E_η$ has a rank-one subsheaf, it may be insufficient to look at only the degree-two part of defining equations to judge whether $E$ is at worst canonical singularity or not.
Let M be a moduli scheme of stable sheaves with fixed Chern classes on an Enriques surface or a hyper-elliptic surface. If its expected dimension is 7 or more, then M admits only canonical singularities. Moreover, if M is compact, then its Kodaira dimension is zero.
This paper contains a Kawamata-Viehweg-Kollár type vanishing theorem for vector bundles. In order to formulate and prove this cleanly, we introduce a class of sheaves that automatically satisfies a vanishing theorem. This is obtained by closing up the subclass of sheaves of adjoint type under extensions, direct images, and taking direct summands.
Given a smooth projective variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic, we prove that the higher cohomologies vanish for the tensor product of the Witt canonical sheaf and the Teichmuller lift of an ample invertible sheaf. We also give a generalisation of this vanishing theorem to one of Kawamata-Viehweg type.
Moduli spaces of stably irreducible sheaves on Kodaira surfaces belong to the short list of examples of smooth and compact holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and it is not yet known how they fit into the classification of holomorphic symplectic manifolds by deformation type. This paper studies a natural Lagrangian fibration on these moduli spaces to determine that they are not Kähler or simply connected, ruling out most of the known deformation types of holomorphic symplectic manifolds.
The moduli space of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces is a quasi-projective variety. In the case when p is a prime, we study its Kodaira dimension. We show that it is of general type for p > 71 and some smaller values of p. This improves an earlier result of G. K. Sankaran.
We prove a strengthening of Kollár's Ampleness Lemma and use it to prove that any proper coarse moduli space of stable log-varieties of general type is projective. We also prove subadditivity of log-Kodaira dimension for fiber spaces whose general fiber is of log general type.
We describe explicitly the possible degenerations of a class of double Kodaira fibrations in the moduli space of stable surfaces. Using deformation theory we also show that under some assumptions we get a connected component of the moduli space of stable surfaces.
The moduli space of polarised K3 surfaces of degree 2d is a quasi-projective variety of dimension 19. For general d very little has been known about the Kodaira dimension of these varieties. In this paper we present an almost complete solution to this problem. Our main result says that this moduli space is of general type for d>61 and for d=46,50,54,58,60.
We extend some of the results obtained for subvarieties of the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds in "Base spaces of non-isotrivial families of smooth minimal models" (math.AG/0103122) to moduli of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero. To this aim we first show that for those manifolds there are no non isotrivial families of minimal models, which are birationally isotrivial. In the last chapter, we discuss the rigidity of curves in the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds and of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero.
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
We reduce Iitaka's subadditivity conjecture for the logarithmic Kodaira dimension to a special case of the generalized abundance conjecture by establishing an Iitaka type inequality for Nakayama's numerical Kodaira dimension. Our proof heavily depends on Nakayama's theory of $ω$-sheaves and $\widehatω$-sheaves. As an application, we prove the subadditivity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension for affine varieties by using the minimal model program for projective klt pairs with big boundary divisor.
We study the group of autoequivalences of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective elliptic surfaces with non-zero Kodaira dimensions. We find a description of it when each reducible fiber is a cycle of $(-2)$-curves.
It is known that the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ stable hyperelliptic curves with $n$ marked points is uniruled for $n \leq 4g+5$. In this paper we consider the complementary case. We calculate the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ and show that it is effective for $n=4g+6$ and big for $n\leq 4g+7$. This leads us to conjecture that $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ has non-negative Kodaira dimension for $n = 4g+6$ and is of general type for $n \geq 4g+7$.
We study the moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces of Picard number at least 3, i.e. $U\oplus \langle -2k \rangle$-polarized K3 surfaces. Such moduli spaces are proved to be of general type for $k\geq 220$. The proof relies on the low-weight cusp form trick developed by Gritsenko, Hulek and Sankaran. Furthermore, explicit geometric constructions of some elliptic K3 surfaces lead to the unirationality of these moduli spaces for $k < 11$ and for 19 other isolated values up to $k=64$.
We determine the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space of even spin curves for all genera, with one possible exception: The scheme S_g has negative Kodaira dimension for g<8 and it is of general type for g>8. The Kodaira dimension of S_8 is non-negative.
This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonic…
We carry out a complete birational classification of the degree g universal Jacobian P_g over the moduli space of curves, highlighting the transition cases g=10, 11. The universal Jacobian is unirational when g<10, has Kodaira dimension zero for g=10 and Kodaira dimension 19 for g=11. For g>11, the variety P_g has Kodaira dimension 3g-3, that is, the maximum allowed by Iitaka's easy addition formula for fibre spaces. In particular, we disprove the expectation that P_g and M_g have the same Kodaira dimension for all genera.
We prove that any two-dimensional moduli space of stable 2-vector bundles, in the non-filtrable range, on a primary Kodaira surface is a primary Kodaira surface. If a universal bundle exists, then the two surfaces are homeomorphic up to unramified covers.
We consider the moduli space $A_{pol}(n)$ of (non-principally) polarised abelian varieties of genus $g\geq3$ with coprime polarisation and full level-$n$ structure. Based upon the analysis of the Tits building in math/0405321, we give an explicit lower bound on $n$ that is sufficient for the compactified moduli space to be of general type if one further explicit condition is satisfied.
In this paper we give the topological classification of real primary Kodaira surfaces and we describe in detail the structure of the corresponding moduli space. One of the main tools is the orbifold fundamental group of a real variety. Our first result is that if $(S, σ)$ is a real primary Kodaira surface, then the differentiable type of the pair $(S,σ)$ is completely determined by the orbifold fundamental group exact sequence. This result allows us to determine all the possible topological types of $(S, σ)$. Finally, we show that once we fix the topological type of $(S, σ)$ corresponding to a…
We generalize the construction of Raynaud of smooth projective surfaces of general type in positive characteristic that violate the Kodaira vanishing theorem. This corrects an earlier paper of the same purpose. These examples are smooth surfaces fibered over a smooth curve whose direct images of the relative dualizing sheaves are not nef, and they violate Kollár's vanishing theorem. Further pathologies on these examples include the existence of non-trivial vector fields and that of non-closed global differential 1-forms.
We study the enumerative geometry of the moduli space R_g of Prym varieties of dimension g-1 (also known as the space of admissible double covers). Our main result is that the compactification of R_g is of general type as soon as g>13. We achieve this by computing the class of two types of cycles on R_g: one defined in terms of Koszul cohomology of Prym curves, the other defined in terms of Raynaud theta divisors associated to certain vector bundles on curves. We formulate a Prym-Green conjecture on syzygies of Prym-canonical curves. In the appendix we show that even though R_g has non-canonic…
Periods of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces were computed by Mukai, O'Grady and the author. In this paper, we shall treat moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces.
For a hypersurface in complex projective space $X\subset \PP^n$, we investigate the singularities and Kodaira dimension of the Kontsevich moduli spaces $\Kbm{0,0}{X,e}$ parametrizing rational curves of degree $e$ on $X$. If $d+e \leq n$ and $X$ is a general hypersurface of degree $d$, we prove that $\Kbm{0,0}{X,e}$ has only canonical singularities and we conjecture the same is true for the coarse moduli space $\kbm{0,0}{X,e}$.This investigation is motivated by the question of which Fano hypersurfaces are unirational.
We study the Simpson moduli space of semi-stable sheaves on the complex projective plane that have dimension 1, multiplicity 6 and Euler characteristic 2. We describe concretely these sheaves as cokernels of morphisms of locally free sheaves and we stratify the moduli space according to the types of sheaves that occur.
In the case of the fine Simpson moduli spaces of 1-dimensional sheaves supported on plane quartics, the subvariety of sheaves that are not locally free on their support is connected, singular, and has codimension 2.
We classify irreducible d-semistable degenerations of primary Kodaira surfaces. As an application we construct a canonical completion for the moduli space of primary Kodaira surfaces.
We find certain relations between flag Hilbert schemes of points on plane curves and moduli spaces of one-dimensional plane sheaves. We show that some of these moduli spaces are unirational.
In the 1980s Drézet and Le Potier realized moduli spaces of Gieseker-semistable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$ as what are now called quiver moduli spaces. We discuss how this construction can be understood using t-structures and exceptional collections on derived categories, and how it can be extended to a similar result on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$.
We construct a moduli space of slope-semistable pure sheaves, building upon previous work of Le Potier and Jun Li on torsion-free sheaves over smooth surfaces. In particular, our construction provides a compactification of the Simpson moduli space of slope-stable reflexive sheaves. We also prove an effective restriction theorem for slope-(semi)stable pure sheaves following an approach due to Langer.
We study the relationship between two stratifications on parameter spaces for coherent sheaves and for quiver representations: a stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types and a stratification arising from the geometric invariant theory construction of the associated moduli spaces of semistable objects. For quiver representations, both stratifications coincide, but this is not quite true for sheaves. We explain why the stratifications on various Quot schemes do not coincide and see that the correct parameter space to compare such stratifications is the stack of coherent sheaves. Then we relate …
We shall study the existence condition of slope stable sheaves on Enriques surfaces. We also gives a different proof of the irreducibility of the moduli spaces of rank 2 stable sheaves.
We investigate the moduli spaces of one- and two-dimensional sheaves on projective K3 and abelian surfaces that are semistable with respect to a nongeneral ample divisor with regard to the symplectic resolvability. We can exclude the existence of new examples of projective irreducible symplectic manifolds lying birationally over components of the moduli spaces of one-dimensional semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, and over components of many of the moduli spaces of two-dimensional sheaves on K3 surfaces, in particular, of those for rank two sheaves.
We prove a representability theorem for moduli functors of framed torsion-free sheaves on nonsingular complex projective surfaces, using formal geometry along a curve in the surface. This has as a consequence that a certain restriction morphism for moduli stacks of sheaves has fibers that are schemes.
We study flips of moduli schemes of stable torsion free sheaves as wall-crossing phenomena of moduli schemes of stable modules over certain finite dimensional algebra. They are described as stratified Grassmann bundles.
This paper studies stable sheaves on abelian surfaces of Picard number one. Our main tools are semi-homogeneous sheaves and Fourier-Mukai transforms. We introduce the notion of semi-homogeneous presentation and investigate the behavior of stable sheaves under Fourier-Mukai transforms. As a consequence, an affirmative proof is given to the conjecture proposed by Mukai in the 1980s. This paper also includes an explicit description of the birational correspondence between the moduli spaces of stable sheaves and the Hilbert schemes.
We consider the singuralities of 2-dimensional moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves on K3 surfaces. We show that the moduli space is normal, in particular the singuralities are rational double points. We also describe the exceptional locus on the resolution in terms of exceptional sheaves.
We show that the compactification of the moduli space of $n-$nodal curves of genus g, i.e. $\mathcal{N}_{g,n}:= \mathcal{M}_{g,2n} /G$, with $G:=(\mathbb{Z}_2)^n \rtimes S_n$, is of general type for $g \geq 24$, for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. While this is a fairly easy result, it requires completely different techniques to extend it to low genus $5 \leq g \leq 23$. Here we need that the number of nodes varies in a band $n_{\mathrm{min}}(g) \leq n \leq n_{\mathrm{max}}(g)$, where $n_{\mathrm{max}}(g)$ is the largest integer smaller than (or in some cases equal to) $\frac{7}{2}(g-1)-3$. The lower …
We study the moduli space of framed flags of sheaves on the projective plane via an adaptation of the ADHM construction of framed sheaves. In particular, we prove that, for certain values of the topological invariants, the moduli space of framed flags of sheaves is an irreducible, nonsingular variety carrying a holomorphic pre-symplectic form.
We study the moduli space of stable sheaves of Euler characteristic 2, supported on curves of arithmetic genus 2 contained in a smooth quadric surface. We show that this moduli space is rational. We compute its Betti numbers and we give a classification of the stable sheaves involving locally free resolutions.
In this paper, we study the Picard group of the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a smooth quadric surface. We polarize the surface by an ample divisor close to the anticanonical class. We focus especially on moduli spaces of sheaves of small discriminant, where we observe new and interesting behavior. Our method relies on constructing certain resolutions for semistable sheaves and applying techniques of geometric invariant theory to the resulting families of sheaves.
We generalize the construction of moduli spaces of parabolic sheaves given by Maruyama and Yokogawa in [MY92] to the case of a projective fine saturated log scheme with a fixed global chart. Furthermore we construct moduli spaces of parabolic sheaves without fixing the weights.
We investigate the moduli space of sheaves supported on space curves of degree 4 and having Euler characteristic 1. We give an elementary proof of the fact that this moduli space consists of three irreducible components.
This paper studies deformations and birational maps between singular moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with 2-divisible Mukai vectors on K3 surfaces. It is showed that under certain conditions, two such moduli spaces of the same dimension can be connected by deformations and birational maps.
We prove the existence of fine moduli spaces of simple coherent sheaves on families of irreducible curves. Our proof is based on the existence of a universal upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of such sheaves, which we provide.
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
In the Simpson moduli space $M$ of semi-stable sheaves with Hilbert polynomial $dm-1$ on a projective plane we study the closed subvariety $M'$ of sheaves that are not locally free on their support. We show that for $d\ge 4$ it is a singular subvariety of codimension $2$ in $M$. The blow up of $M$ along $M'$ is interpreted as a (partial) modification of $M\setminus M'$ by vector bundles (on support).
Let M be a projective fine moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective variety X with a universal family E. We prove that in four examples, E can be realized as a complete flat family of stable sheaves on M parametrized by X, which identifies X with a smooth connected component of some moduli space of stable sheaves on M.
