We determine the shapes of all degree $4$ number fields that are Galois. These lie in four infinite families depending on the Galois group and the tame versus wild ramification of the field. In the $V_4$ case, each family is a two-dimensional space of orthorhombic lattices and we show that the shapes are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, in these spaces as the discriminant goes to infinity (with respect to natural measures). We also show that the shape is a complete invariant in some natural families of $V_4$-quartic fields. For $C_4$-quartic fields, each family is a one-dimensional space of tetragonal lattices and the shapes make up a discrete subset of points in these spaces. We prove asymptotics for the number of fields with a given shape in this case.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $K$ be a number field of degree four that is Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$. The goal of this article is to classify the different isomorphism types of $E(K)_{\text{tors}}$.
Given a quartic Galois extension $L/\mathbb{Q}$ of number fields and a Hopf-Galois structure $H$ on $L/\mathbb{Q}$, we study the freeness of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ as module over the associated order $\mathfrak{A}_H$ in $H$. For the classical Galois structure $H_c$, we know by Leopoldt's theorem that $\mathcal{O}_L$ is $\mathfrak{A}_{H_c}$-free. If $L/\mathbb{Q}$ is cyclic, it admits a unique non-classical Hopf-Galois structure, whereas if it is biquadratic, it admits three such Hopf-Galois structures. In both cases, we obtain that freeness depends on the solvability in $\mathbb{…
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of $D_4$ quartic extensions of a function field with discriminant equal to some bound, essentially reproducing the analogous result over number fields due Cohen, Diaz y Diaz, and Olivier, but with a stronger error term. We also study the relative density of $D_4$ and $S_4$ quartic extensions of a function field and show that with mild conditions, the number of $D_4$ quartic extensions can far exceed the number of $S_4$ quartic extensions
We show that there are $O_\varepsilon(H^{1.5+\varepsilon})$ monic, cubic polynomials with integer coefficients bounded by $H$ in absolute value whose Galois group is $A_3$. We also show that the order of magnitude for $D_4$ quartics is $H^2 (\log H)^2$, and that the respective counts for $A_4$, $V_4$, $C_4$ are $O(H^{2.91})$, $O(H^2 \log H)$, $O(H^2 \log H)$. Our work establishes that irreducible non-$S_3$ cubic polynomials are less numerous than reducible ones, and similarly in the quartic setting: these are the first two solved cases of a 1936 conjecture made by van der Waerden.
In this paper, we consider integral and irreducible binary quartic forms whose Galois group is isomorphic to a subgroup of the dihedral group of order eight. We first show that the set of all such forms is a union of families indexed by integral binary quadratic forms $f(x,y)$ of non-zero discriminant. Then, we shall enumerate the $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of all such forms associated to a fixed $f(x,y)$.
We use explicit methods to study the 4-torsion points on the Jacobian variety of the Fermat quartic. With the aid of computer algebra systems, we explicitly give a basis of the group of 4-torsion points. We calculate the Galois action, and show that the image of the mod 4 Galois representation is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 8. As applications, we calculate the Mordell-Weil group of the Jacobian variety of the Fermat quartic over each subfield of the 8-th cyclotomic field. We determine all of the points on the Fermat quartic defined over quadratic extensions of the 8-th cyclotomic…
We construct a family of quartic polynomials with cyclic Galois group and show that the roots of the polynomials are fundamental units or generate a subgroup of index 5.
When ordered by discriminant, it is known that about 83% of quartic fields over Q have associated Galois group S_4, while the remaining 17% have Galois group D_4. We study these proportions over a general number field F. We find that asymptotically 100% of quadratic number fields have more D_4 extensions than S_4 and that the ratio between the number of D_4 and S_4 quartic extensions is biased arbitrarily in favor of D_4 extensions. Under GRH, we give a lower bound that holds for general number fields.
Let $P(X)\in\mathbb{Z}[X]$ be an irreducible, monic, quartic polynomial with cyclic or dihedral Galois group. We prove that there exists a constant $c_P>0$ such that for a positive proportion of integers $n$, $P(n)$ has a prime factor $\ge n^{1+c_P}$.
Given an odd representation of the absolute Galois group of Q onto PGL(2,3) and a positive integer N, there exists a twisted modular curve defined over Q whose rational points classify the quadratic Q-curves of degree N realizing the representation. The paper gives a method to provide an explicit plane quartic model for this curve in the genus-three case N=5.
For an algebraic number field $K$ and a prime number $p$, let $\widetilde{K}/K$ be the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. Greenberg's generalized conjecture (GGC) predicts that the Galois group of the maximal unramified abelian pro-$p$ extension of $\widetilde{K}$ is pseudo-null over the completed group ring $\mathbb{Z}_p[\![\mathop{\mathrm{Gal}}\nolimits(\widetilde{K}/K)]\!]$. We show that GGC holds for some imaginary quartic fields containing imaginary quadratic fields and some prime numbers.
We consider families of number fields of degree 4 whose normal closures over $\mathbb{Q}$ have Galois group isomorphic to $D_4$, the symmetries of a square. To any such field $L$, one can associate the Artin conductor of the corresponding 2-dimensional irreducible Galois representation with image $D_4$. We determine the asymptotic number of such quartic $D_4$-fields ordered by conductor, and compute the leading term explicitly as a mass formula, verifying heuristics of Kedlaya and Wood. Additionally, we are able to impose any local splitting conditions at any finite number of primes (sometimes…
We study twists of the Burkhardt quartic threefold over non-algebraically closed base fields of characteristic different from 2,3,5. We show they all admit quartic models in projective four-space. We identify a Galois-cohomological obstruction that measures if a given twist is birational to a moduli space of abelian varieties. This obstruction has implications for the rational points on these varieties. As a result, we see that all possible 3-level structures can be realized by abelian surfaces, whereas Kummer 3-level structures that group-theoretically may be admissible, may not be realizable…
We use the method of Shintani, as developed by Taniguchi and Thorne, to prove the joint cuspidal equidistribution of the shape of quartic fields paired with the shape of its cubic resolvent, when the fields are ordered by discriminant. Our estimate saves a small power in the corresponding Weyl sums.
For $n=3$, 4, and 5, we prove that, when $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ are ordered by their absolute discriminants, the lattice shapes of the rings of integers in these fields become equidistributed in the space of lattices.
The V_4-lines for each linearly normal space elliptic curve form the edges of a tetrahedron, however in case the elliptic curve has j=12^3, there exist Z_4-lines in addition. We show the arrangement of V_4 and Z_4-lines explicitly for the curve. As a corollary we obtain that each irreducible quartic curve with genus one has at most two Galois points.
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
We study the arithmetic of bitangents of smooth quartics over global fields. With the aid of computer algebra systems and using Elsenhans--Jahnel's results on the inverse Galois problem for bitangents, we show that, over any global field of characteristic different from $2$, there exist smooth quartics which have bitangents over every local field, but do not have bitangents over the global field. We give an algorithm to find such quartics explicitly, and give an example over $\mathbb{Q}$. We also discuss a similar problem concerning symmetric determinantal representations. This paper is a summ…
We determine, asymptotically, the number of quintic fields having bounded discriminant. Specifically, we prove that the asymptotic number of quintic fields having absolute discriminant at most X is a constant times X. In contrast with the quartic case, we also show that a density of 100% of quintic fields, when ordered by absolute discriminant, have Galois closure with full Galois group $S_5$. The analogues of these results are also proven for orders in quintic fields. Finally, we give an interpretation of the various constants appearing in these theorems in terms of local masses of quintic ri…
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
A standard formula (1) leads to a proof of HT90, but requires proving the existence of $θ$ such that $α\ne 0$, so that $β=α/σ(α)$. We instead impose the condition (M), that taking $θ=1$ makes $α=0$. Taking $n=3$, we recover Shanks's simplest cubic fields. The "simplest" number fields of degrees 3 to 6, Washington's cyclic quartic fields, and a certain family of totally real cyclic extensions of $\Q(\cos(π/4m))$ all have defining polynomials whose zeroes satisfy \eqref{e:M}. Further investigation of (M) for $n=4$ leads to an elementary algebraic construction of a 2-parameter family of octic pol…
We adapt a known technique for searching for ideal classes of arbitrary order and then apply it to three families of number fields. We show that a family of cyclic sextic number fields has infinitely many fields in it that contain a relative ideal class of order $r,$ where $r$ is a positive integer relatively prime to the degree of the extension. We then show that the same holds true for a family of cyclic quartic number fields. Though the technique is traditionally applied to Galois extensions, we show how it may be adapted to handle a family of non-Galois cubic number fields and prove that t…
Let $N(5,D_5,X)$ be the number of quintic number fields whose Galois closure has Galois group $D_5$ and whose discriminant is bounded by $X$. By a conjecture of Malle, we expect that $N(5,D_5,X) \sim C X^{1/2}$ for some constant $C$. The best known upper bound is $N(5,D_5,X)\ll X^{3/4 + ε}$, and we show this could be improved by counting points on a certain variety defined by a norm equation; computer calculations give strong evidence that this number is $\ll X^{2/3}$. Finally, we show how such norm equations can be helpful by reinterpreting an earlier proof of Wong on upper bounds for $A_4$ q…
Let $\ell$ be a prime and let $L/\mathbb{Q}$ be a Galois number field with Galois group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}$. We show that the {\it shape} of $L$ is either $\frac{1}{2}\mathbb{A}_{\ell-1}$ or a fixed sub lattice depending only on $\ell$; such a dichotomy in the value of the shape only depends on the type of ramification of $L$. This work is motivated by a result of Bhargava and Shnidman, and a previous work of the first named author, on the shape of $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$ number fields.
Genus 2 curves are useful in cryptography for both discrete-log based and pairing-based systems, but a method is required to compute genus 2 curves such that the Jacobian has a given number of points. Currently, all known methods involve constructing genus 2 curves with complex multiplication via computing their three Igusa class polynomials. These polynomials have rational coefficients and require extensive computation and precision to compute. Both the computation and the complexity analysis of these algorithms can be improved by a more precise understanding of the denominators of the coeffi…
In 2012 the first named author conjectured that totally real quartic fields of fundamental discriminant are determined by the isometry class of the integral trace zero form; such conjecture was based on computational evidence and the analog statement for cubic fields which was proved using Bhargava's higher composition laws on cubes. Here, using Bhargava's parametrization of quartic fields we prove the conjecture by generalizing the ideas used in the cubic case. Since at the moment, for arbitrary degrees, there is nothing like Bhargava's parametrizations we cannot deal with degrees $n > 5$ in …
We show that any triple Massey product with respect to prime 2 contains 0 whenever it is defined over any field. This extends the theorem of M. J. Hopkins and K. G. Wickelgren, from global fields to any fields. This is the first time when the vanishing of any $n$-Massey product for some prime $p$ has been established for all fields. This leads to a strong restriction on the shape of relations in the maximal pro-2-quotients of absolute Galois groups, which was out of reach until now. We also develop an extension of Serre's transgression method to detect triple commutators in relations of pro-$p…
In this article we perform an extensive study of the spaces of automorphic forms for GL(2) of weight two and level N, for N an ideal in the ring of integers of the quartic CM field generated by the twelfth roots of unity. This study is conducted through the computation of the group cohomology of the congruence subgroup of upper triangular matrices modulo N, and the corresponding Hecke action which this space admits. Combining this Hecke data with the Faltings-Serre method for proving equivalence of Galois representations, we are able to provide the first known examples of modular elliptic curv…
We study the structure of the Mordell--Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields of degree 2, 3, and 4. We show that if $T$ is a group, then either the class of all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with torsion subgroup $T$ is empty, or it contains curves of rank~0 as well as curves of positive rank. We prove a similar but slightly weaker result for cubic and quartic fields. On the other hand, we find a group $T$ and a quartic field $K$ such that among the elliptic curves over $K$ with torsion subgroup $T$, there are curves of positive rank, but none of rank~0. We find examples of …
The van der Waerden's Conjecture states that the set $\mathscr{P}_{n,N}^0(\mathbb{Q})$ of monic integer polynomials $f(X)$ of degree $n$, with height $\le N$ such that the Galois group $G_{K_f/\mathbb{Q}}$ of the splitting field $K_f/\mathbb{Q}$ is the full symmetric group, has order $|\mathscr{P}_{n,N}^0(\mathbb{Q})|=(2N)^n+O_n(N^{n-1})$ as $N\rightarrow+\infty$. The conjecture has been shown previously for cubic and quartics polynomials by van der Waerden, Chow and Dietmann. Subsequently, Bhargava proved it for $n\ge6$. In this paper, we generalize the result for polynomials with coefficient…
We study the distribution of the traces of the Frobenius endomorphism of genus $g$ curves which are quartic non-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}_{\mathbb{F}_{q}}$, as the curve varies in an irreducible component of the moduli space. We show that for $q$ fixed, the limiting distribution of the trace of Frobenius equals the sum of $q + 1$ independent random discrete variables. We also show that when both $g$ and $q$ go to infinity, the normalized trace has a standard complex Gaussian distribution. Finally, we extend these computations to the general case of arbitrary covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}_{\…
In a companion paper, we developed an efficient algebraic method for computing the Fourier transforms of certain functions defined on prehomogeneous vector spaces over finite fields, and we carried out these computations in a variety of cases. Here we develop a method, based on Fourier analysis and algebraic geometry, which exploits these Fourier transform formulas to yield level of distribution results, in the sense of analytic number theory. Such results are of the shape typically required for a variety of sieve methods. As an example of such an application we prove that there are $\gg$ X/lo…
We study how the torsion of elliptic curves over number fields grows upon base change, and in particular prove various necessary conditions for torsion growth. For a number field $F$, we show that for a large set of number fields $L$, whose Galois group of their normal closure over $F$ has certain properties, it will hold that $E(L)_{tors}=E(F)_{tors}$ for all elliptic curves $E$ defined over $F$. Our methods turn out to be particularly useful in studying the possible torsion groups $E(K)_{tors}$, where $K$ is a number field and $E$ is a base change of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q…
Let K/Q be Galois, and let eta in K* whose conjugates are multiplicatively independent. For a prime p, unramified, prime to eta, let np be the residue degree of p and gp the number of P I p, then let o\_P(eta) and o\_p(eta) be the orders of eta modulo P and p, respectively.Using Frobenius automorphisms, we show that for all p\textgreater{}\textgreater{}0, some explicit divisors of p^(np)-1 cannot realize o\_P(eta) nor o\_p(eta), and we give a lower bound of o\_p(eta).Then we obtain that, for all p\textgreater{}\textgreater{}0 such that np \textgreater{}1, Prob(o\_p(eta)\textless{}p) $\le$ 1/p^…
