In this paper, we give an axiomatic characterization of the cap product in the Hochschild theory of associative unital algebras which are projective over a commutative unital ring. We also give an interpretation of the cap product with coefficients in the algebra via chain maps. We illustrate these results by computing the cap product for truncated polynomial algebras $k[x]/(x^N)$ and for polynomial algebras, where it is identified with the contraction of differential forms by polyvector fields.
Let A a k-algebra, H a Hopf algebra, E = A#H a general crossed product and M an E-bimodule. We obtain a complex simpler than the canonical one, giving the Hochschild homology of E with coefficients in M. This complex is eqquiped with a natural filtration. We prove that the associated spectral sequence coincides with that obtained by either, the Hochschild-Serre direct method or the Cartan-Leray-Grothendieck method. We also get similar results for the cohomology.
Given an acyclic twisting cochain $π:C\to A$, from a curved dg coalgebra $C$ to a dg algebra $A$, we show that the associated twisted hom complex $\mathrm{Hom}^π_k(C,A)$ has cohomology equal to the Hochschild cohomology of $A$, as a graded ring. As a corollary we find that the Hochschild cohomology of a Koszul algebra $A$, along with its cup product, is a subquotient of the tensor product algebra $A^!\otimes A$ of $A$ with its Koszul dual.
We define a version of Hochschild homology and cohomology suitable for a class of algebras admitting compatible actions of bialgebras, called module algebras. We show this (co)homology, called Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology, can also be defined as a derived functor on the category of representations of a crossed product algebra. We investigate the relationship of our theory with Hopf cyclic cohomology and also prove Morita invariance of the Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology.
We transport Steenrod's cup-i products from the singular cochains on the free loop space Maps(S^1, BG) to Hochschild's original cochain complex Hom (k[G]^*, k[G]) defining Hochschild cohomology. Here G is a discrete group, k an arbitrary coefficient ring, and BG the classifying space of G. For cochains supported on BG, we prove that Gerstenhaber's cup product agrees with the simplicial cup product and Gerstenhaber's pre-Lie product agrees with Steenrod's cup-one product. As a consequence, for cocycles f and g supported on BG, the Gerstenhaber bracket [f, g] = 0 in Hochschild cohomology. This i…
Stefan and Guichardet have provided Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre type spectral sequences which converge to the Hochschild cohomology and Ext groups of a smash product. We show that these spectral sequences carry natural multiplicative structures, and that these multiplicative structures can be used to calculate the cup product on Hochschild cohomology and the Yoneda product on an Ext algebra.
It is shown that a recollement of derived categories of algebras induces those of tensor product algebras and opposite algebras respectively, which is applied to clarify the relations between recollements of derived categories of algebras and smoothness and Hochschild cohomology of algebras.
It is shown that the cochain complex of relative Hochschild A-valued cochains of a depth two extension A | B under cup product is isomorphic as a differential graded algebra with the Amitsur complex of the coring S = End {}_BA_B over the centralizer R = A^B with grouplike element 1_S, which itself is isomorphic to the Cartier complex of S with coefficients in the (S,S)-bicomodule R^e. This specializes to finite dimensional algebras, H-separable extensions and Hopf-Galois extensions.
This document is supplementary material for the author's paper \emph{The cup product on hochschild cohomology for localizations of filtered koszul algebras}, arXiv:1304.0527. We give a detailed computation of the Hochschild cohomology algebra for the Down-Up algebra with parameters $(0,1,0)$.
Let $Γ\subset SL(2, \mathbb Z)$ be a finite subgroup acting on the irrational rotational algebra $\mathcal A_θ$ via the restriction of the canonical action of $SL(2,\mathbb Z)$. Consider the crossed product algebra $\mathcal A_θ^{alg} \rtimes Γ$ obtained by the restriction of the $Γ$ action on the algberaic irrational rotational algebra. In this paper we prove many results on the homology group of the crossed product algebra $\mathcal A_θ^{alg} \rtimes Γ$. We also analyse the case of the smooth crossed product algebra, $\mathcal A_θ\rtimes Γ$ and calculate some of its homology groups.
In this work we study the class of algebras satisfying a duality property with respect to Hochschild homology and cohomology, as in [VdB]. More precisely, we consider the class of algebras $A$ such that there exists an invertible bimodule $U$ and an integer number $d$ with the property $H^{\bullet}(A,M)\cong H_{d-\bullet}(A,U\ot_AM)$, for all $A$-bimodules $M$. We will show that this class is closed under localization and under smash products with respect to Hopf algebras satisfying also the duality property. We also illustrate the subtlety on dualities with smash products developing in detail…
Consider a smooth affine algebraic variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field, and let a finite group $G$ act on it. We assume that the characteristic of the field is greater than the dimension of $X$ and the order of $G$. An explicit formula for multiplication on the Hochschild cohomology of a crossed product of $k[G]$ and $k[X]$ is given in terms of multivector fields on $X$ and $g$-invariant subvarieties of $X$ for $g\in G$.
We show that the braided Hochschild cohomology, of an algebra in a suitably algebraic braided monoidal category, admits a graded ring structure under which it is braided commutative. We then give a canonical identification between the usual Hochschild cohomology ring of a smash product and the (derived) invariants of its braided Hochschild cohomology ring. We apply our results to identify the associative formal deformation theory of a smash product with its formal deformation theory as a module algebra over the given Hopf algebra (when the Hopf algebra is sufficiently semisimple). As a second …
We define a cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show the cup product is graded commutative. We define a graded Lie bracket with the degree $-1$ on the Hochschild cohomology $\HH^{\ast}(A)$ of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show that the Lie bracket together with the cup product is a Gerstenhaber algebra on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra. Moreover, we consider the Hochschild cohomology of split extension conformal algebra $A\hat{\oplus}M$ of $A$ with a conformal bimodule $M$, and show that there exist an…
The cup and cap product in twisted Hochschild (co)homology is computed for the standard quantum 2-sphere and used to construct a cyclic 2-cocycle that represents the fundamental Hochschild class.
In this paper we study the Hochschild cohomology ring of convolution algebras associated to orbifolds, as well as their deformation quantizations. In the first case the ring structure is given in terms of a wedge product on twisted polyvectorfields on the inertia orbifold. After deformation quantization, the ring structure defines a product on the cohomology of the inertia orbifold. We study the relation between this product and an $S^1$-equivariant version of the Chen--Ruan product. In particular, we give a de Rham model for this equivariant orbifold cohomology.
We show that the Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring $HH^*(RG,RG)$ of a finite group algebra $RG$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of the Tate cohomology rings of the centralizers of conjugacy class representatives of $G$. Moreover, our main result provides an explicit formula for the cup product in $HH^*(RG,RG)$ with respect to this decomposition. As an example, this formula helps us to compute the Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring of the symmetric group $S_3$ with coefficients in a field of characteristic 3.
We develop a new spectral sequence in order to calculate Hochschild homology of smash biproducts (also called twisted tensor products) of unital associative algebras $A\# B$ provided one of $A$ or $B$ has Hochschild dimension less than 2. We use this spectral sequence to calculate Hochschild homology of quantum tori, multiparametric quantum affine spaces, quantum complete intersections, quantum Weyl algebras, deformed completed Weyl algebras, and finally the algebra $M_q(2)$ of quantum $2\times 2$-matrices.
We realize explicitly the well-known additive decomposition of the Hochschild cohomology ring of a group algebra in the elements level. As a result, we describe the cup product, the Batalin-Vilkovisky operator and the Lie bracket in the Hochschild cohomology ring of a group algebra.
Let A be any finite dimensional Hopf algebra over a field k. We specify the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for A and introduce cup products that make them become graded rings. We establish the relationship between these rings. In particular, the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of A is isomorphic (as algebras) to its Tate cohomology with coefficients in an adjoint module. Consequently, the Tate cohomology ring of A is a direct summand of its Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring. As an example, we explicitly compute both the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for the Sweedler algebra H_4.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we introduce two motivic operations on additive higher Chow cycles: analogues of the Connes boundary $B$ operator and the shuffle product on Hochschild complexes. The former allows us to apply the formalism of mixed complexes to additive Chow complexes building a bridge between additive higher Chow theory and additive $K$-theory. The latter induces a wedge product on additive Chow groups for which we show that the Connes operator is a graded derivation for the wedge product using a variation of a Totaro's cycle. Hence, the additive higher Chow groups with t…
In this article we discuss two different but related results on Hochschild (co)homology and the theory of Koszul duality. On the one hand, we prove essentially that the Tamarkin-Tsygan calculus of an Adams connected augmented dg algebra and of its Koszul dual are dual. This uses the fact that Hochschild cohomology and homology may be regarded as a twisted construction of some natural (augmented) dg algebras and dg modules over the former. In particular, from these constructions it follows that the computation of the cup product on Hochschild cohomology and cap product on Hochschild homology of…
We prove the graded braided commutativity of the Hochschild cohomology of $A$ with trivial coefficients, where $A$ is a braided Hopf algebra in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the group algebra of an abelian group, under some finiteness conditions on a projective resolution of $A$ as $A$-bimodule. This is a generalization of a result by Mastnak, Pevtsova, Schauenburg and Witherspoon to a context which includes Nichols algebras such as the Jordan and the super Jordan plane. We prove this result by constructing a coduoid-up-to-homotopy structure on the aforementioned projective reso…
We compute the Hochschild homology of Leavitt path algebras over a field $k$. As an application, we show that $L_2$ and $L_2\otimes L_2$ have different Hochschild homologies, and so they are not Morita equivalent; in particular they are not isomorphic. Similarly, $L_\infty$ and $L_\infty\otimes L_\infty$ are distinguished by their Hochschild homologies and so they are not Morita equivalent either. By contrast, we show that $K$-theory cannot distinguish these algebras; we have $K_*(L_2)=K_*(L_2\otimes L_2)=0$ and $K_*(L_\infty)=K_*(L_\infty\otimes L_\infty)=K_*(k)$.
Let k be a field, A a unitary associative k-algebra and V a k-vector space endowed with a distinguished element 1_V. We obtain a mixed complex, simpler that the canonical one, that gives the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of a crossed product E:=A#_f V, in the sense of Brzezinski. We actually work in the more general context of relative cyclic homology. Specifically, we consider a subalgebra K of A that satisfies suitable hypothesis and we find a mixed complex computing the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of E relative to K. Then, when E is a cleft braide…
The main objective of this paper is to provide a theory for computing the Hochschild cohomology of algebras arising from a linear category with finitely many objects and zero compositions. For this purpose, we consider such a category using an ad hoc quiver $Q$, with an algebra associated to each vertex and a bimodule to each arrow. The computation relies on cohomological functors that we introduce, and on the combinatorics of the quiver. One point extensions are occurrences of this situation, and Happel's long exact sequence is a particular case of the long exact sequence of cohomology that w…
We obtain a mixed complex, simpler that the canonical one, given the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of a crossed product E=A#fH, where H is an arbitrary Hopf algebra and f is a convolution invertible cocycle with values in A. Actually, we work in the more general context of relative cyclic homology. Specifically, we consider a subalgebra K of A which is stable under the action of H, and we find a mixed complex computing the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of E relative to K. As an application we obtain two spectral sequences converging to the cyclic homol…
We study the cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of the stack quotient [X/G] of a smooth quasi-projective variety X by a finite group G. More specifically, we construct a G-equivariant sheaf of graded algebras on X whose G-invariant global sections recover the associated graded algebra of the Hochschild cohomology of [X/G], under a natural filtration. This sheaf is an algebra over the polyvector fields T^{poly}_X on X, and is generated as a T^{poly}_X-algebra by the sum of the determinants det(N_{X^g}) of the normal bundles of the fixed loci in X. We employ our understanding of Hochschild…
Let A be an H-Galois extension of B. If M is a Hopf bimodule then HH.(A,M), the Hochschild homology of A with coefficients in M, is a right comodule over the coalgebra C:=H/[H,H]. Given an injective left C-comodule V, we denote the cotensor product of M and V by N. Our aim is to investigate the relationship between the cotensor product of HH.(A,M) and V, on the one hand, and HH.(B,N) on the other hand. The roots of this problem can be found in Lorenz's work on the descent of Hochschild homology of centrally Galois extensions, where HH.(A)^G, the subspace of invariant cycles with respect to the…
We prove that the shifted Hochschild chain complex $C\_*(A,A)[m]$ of a symmetric open Frobenius algebra $A$ of degree $m$ has a natural homotopy coBV-algebra structure. As a consequence $HH\_*(A,A)[m]$ and $HH^*(A,A^\vee)[-m]$ are respectively coBV and BV algebras. The underlying coalgebra and algebra structure may not be resp. counital and unital. We also introduce a natural homotopy BV-algebra structure on $C\_*(A,A)[m]$ hence a BV-structure on $HH\_*(A,A)[m]$. Moreover we prove that the product and coproduct on $HH\_*(A,A)[m]$ satisfy the Frobenius compatibility condition i.e. $HH\_*(A,A)[m…
A main contribution of this paper is the explicit construction of comparison morphisms between the standard bar resolution and Bardzell's minimal resolution for truncated quiver algebras (TQA's). As a direct application we describe explicitely the Yoneda product and derive several results on the structure of the cohomology ring of TQA's. For instance, we show that the product of odd degree cohomology classes is always zero. We prove that TQA's associated with quivers with no cycles or with neither sinks nor sources have trivial cohomology rings. On the other side we exhibit a fundamental examp…
We consider associative algebras L over a field provided with a direct sum decomposition of a two-sided ideal M and a sub-algebra A - examples are provided by trivial extensions or triangular type matrix algebras. In this relative and split setting we describe a long exact sequence computing the Hochschild cohomology of L. We study the connecting homomorphism using the cup-product and we infer several results, in particular the first Hochschild cohomology group of a trivial extension never vanishes.
Given a differential graded (dg) symmetric Frobenius algebra $A$ we construct an unbounded complex $\mathcal{D}^{*}(A,A)$, called the Tate-Hochschild complex, which arises as a totalization of a double complex having Hochschild chains as negative columns and Hochschild cochains as non-negative columns. We prove that the complex $\mathcal{D}^*(A,A)$ computes the singular Hochschild cohomology of $A$. We construct a cyclic (or Calabi-Yau) $A$-infinity algebra structure, which extends the classical Hochschild cup and cap products, and an $L$-infinity algebra structure extending the classical Gers…
We calculate the topological Hochschild homology groups of a maximal order in a central algebra over the rationals. Since the positive-dimensional THH groups consist only of torsion, we do this one prime ideal at a time for all the nonzero prime ideals in the center of the maximal order. This allows us to reduce the problem to studying the THH groups of maximal orders A in simple algebras over Q_p. We show that the topological Hochschild homology of A/(p) splits as the tensor product of its Hochschild homology and the topological Hochschild homology of F_p. We use this result in Brun's spectra…
It is well known that the cohomology of a tensor product is essentially the tensor product of the cohomologies. We look at twisted tensor products, and investigate to which extend this is still true. We give an explicit description of the $\Ext$-algebra of the tensor product of two modules, and under certain additional conditions, describe an essential part of the Hochschild cohomology ring of a twisted tensor product. As an application, we characterize precisely when the cohomology groups over a quantum complete intersection are finitely generated over the Hochschild cohomology ring. Moreover…
The multiplicative group of a global field acts on its adele ring by multiplication. We consider the crossed product algebra of the resulting action on the space of Schwartz functions on the adele ring and compute its Hochschild, cyclic and periodic cyclic homology. We also compute the topological K-theory of the C*-algebra crossed product.
Let $\mathcal H$ be the class of algebras verifying Han's conjecture. In this paper we analyse two types of algebras with the aim of providing an inductive step towards the proof of this conjecture. Firstly we show that if an algebra $Λ$ is triangular with respect to a system of non necessarily primitive idempotents, and if the algebras at the idempotents belong to $\mathcal H$, then $Λ$ is in $\mathcal H$. Secondly we consider a $2\times 2$ matrix algebra, with two algebras on the diagonal, two projective bimodules in the corners, and zero corner products. They are not triangular with respect…
It has been asked whether there is a version of the tensor product property for support varieties over finite dimensional algebras defined in terms of Hochschild cohomology. We show that in general no such version can exist. In particular, we show that for certain quantum complete intersections, there are modules and bimodules for which the variety of the tensor product is not even contained in the variety of the one-sided module.
Let $X$ be a simply connected space and $\Bbb K$ be any field. The normalized singular cochains $N^*(X; {\Bbb K})$ admit a natural strongly homotopy commutative algebra structure, which induces a natural product on the Hochschild homology $HH_* N^*X$ of the space $X$. We prove that, endowed with this product, $HH_*N^*X$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of the free loop space of $X$ with coefficients in $\Bbb K$. We also show how to construct a simpler Hochschild complex which allows direct computation.
We extend the notion of monogenic extension to the noncommutative setting, and we study the Hochschild cohomology ring of such an extension. As an aplication we complete the computation of the cohomology ring of the rank one Hopf algebras beggined in [S. M. Burciu and S. J. Witherspoon, Hochschild cohomology of smash products and rank one Hopf algebras].
We compute the cyclic and Hochschild cohomology groups for the algebras $\mathcal A_θ^{alg} \rtimes \mathbb Z_3, \mathcal A_θ^{alg} \rtimes \mathbb Z_4$ and $\mathcal A_θ^{alg} \rtimes \mathbb Z_6$. We also compute the partial Chern-Connes index table for each of these algebras.
The origin and interplay of products and dualities in algebraic (co)homology theories is ascribed to a $\times_A$-Hopf algebra structure on the relevant universal enveloping algebra. This provides a unified treatment for example of results by Van den Bergh about Hochschild (co)homology and by Huebschmann about Lie-Rinehart (co)homology.
We compute the Hochschild and Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomological dimensions of the universal cosovereign Hopf algebras, when the matrix of parameters is a generic asymmetry. Our main tools are considerations on the cohomologies of free product of Hopf algebras, and on the invariance of the cohomological dimensions under graded twisting by a finite abelian group.
In a classic paper, Gerstenhaber showed that first order deformations of an associative k-algebra A are controlled by the second Hochschild cohomology group of A. More generally, any n-parameter first order deformation of A gives, due to commutativity of the cup-product on Hochschild cohomology, a morphism from the graded algebra Sym(k^n) to Ext^*(A,A), the Ext-algebra in the category of A-bimodules. We prove that any extension of the n-parameter first order deformation of A to an INFINITE ORDER formal deformation provides a canonical `lift' of the graded algebra morphism above to a dg-algebra…
We investigate the higher-dimensional amenability of tensor products $\A \ptp \B$ of Banach algebras $\A$ and $\B$. We prove that the weak bidimension $db_w$ of the tensor product $\A \ptp \B$ of Banach algebras $\A$ and $\B$ with bounded approximate identities satisfies \[ db_w \A \ptp \B = db_w \A + db_w \B. \] We show that it cannot be extended to arbitrary Banach algebras. For example, for a biflat Banach algebra $\A$ which has a left or right, but not two-sided, bounded approximate identity, we have $db_w \A \ptp \A \le 1$ and $db_w \A + db_w \A =2.$ We describe explicitly the continuous …
