It is well known that the cohomology of a tensor product is essentially the tensor product of the cohomologies. We look at twisted tensor products, and investigate to which extend this is still true. We give an explicit description of the $\Ext$-algebra of the tensor product of two modules, and under certain additional conditions, describe an essential part of the Hochschild cohomology ring of a twisted tensor product. As an application, we characterize precisely when the cohomology groups over a quantum complete intersection are finitely generated over the Hochschild cohomology ring. Moreover, both for quantum complete intersections and in related cases we obtain a lower bound for the representation dimension of the algebra.
Connes and Cuntz showed in [Comm. Math. Phys. 114 (1988), 515-526] that suitable cyclic cocycles can be represented as Chern characters of finitely summable semifinite Fredholm modules. We show an analogous result in twisted cyclic cohomology using Chern characters of modular Fredholm modules. We present examples of modular Fredholm modules arising from Podleś spheres and from $SU_q(2)$.
We show that there is an action of the symmetric group on the Hochschild cochain complex of a twisted group algebra with coefficients in a bimodule. This allows us to define the symmetric Hochschild cohomology of twisted group algebras, similarly to th construction of symmetric group cohomology due to Staic. We give explicit embeddings and connecting homomorphisms between the symmetric cohomology spaces and symmetric Hochschild cohomology of twisted group algebras.
We explore the relations of twisted K-theory to twisted and untwisted classical cohomology. We construct an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and describe its differentials rationally as Massey products. We define the twisted Chern character. We also discuss power operations in the twisted theory, and the role of the Koschorke classes.
In this thesis we give a construction of cyclic cocycles on convolution algebras twisted by gerbes over discrete translation groupoids. In his seminal book, Connes constructs a map from the equivariant cohomology of a manifold carrying the action of a discrete group into the periodic cyclic cohomology of the associated convolution algebra. Furthermore, for proper étale groupoids, J.-L. Tu and P. Xu provide a map between the periodic cyclic cohomology of a gerbe twisted convolution algebra and twisted cohomology groups. Our focus will be the convolution algebra with a product defined by a gerbe…
We continue the investigation of twisted homology theories in the context of dimension drop phenomena. This work unifies previous equivariant index calculations in twisted cyclic cohomology. We do this by proving the existence of the resolvent cocycle, a finitely summable analogue of the JLO cocycle, under weaker smoothness hypotheses and in the more general setting of `modular' spectral triples. As an application we show that using our twisted resolvent cocycle, we can obtain a local index formula for the Podles sphere. The resulting twisted cyclic cocycle has non-vanishing Hochschild class w…
We give a construction of cyclic cocycles on convolution algebras twisted by gerbes over discrete translation groupoids. For proper étale groupoids, Tu and Xu provide a map between the periodic cyclic cohomology of a gerbe-twisted convolution algebra and twisted cohomology groups which is similar to a construction of Mathai and Stevenson. When the groupoid is not proper, we cannot construct an invariant connection on the gerbe; therefore to study this algebra, we instead develop simplicial techniques to construct a simplicial curvature 3-form representing the class of the gerbe. Then by using …
The aim of this paper is twofold. In the first part, we consider twisted Rota-Baxter operators on associative algebras that were introduced by Uchino as a noncommutative analogue of twisted Poisson structures. We construct an $L_\infty$-algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements are given by twisted Rota-Baxter operators. This leads to cohomology associated to a twisted Rota-Baxter operator. This cohomology can be seen as the Hochschild cohomology of a certain associative algebra with coefficients in a suitable bimodule. We study deformations of twisted Rota-Baxter operators by means of the above-de…
In this paper, we study the mod(p) motivic cohomology of twisted complete flag varieties over some restricted fields k. Here we take k such that the mod(p) Milnor K-theory KM_i(k)/p=0 for i>3.
We study the "quantized calculus" corresponding to the algebraic ideas related to "twisted cyclic cohomology" introduced in [KMT]. With very similar definitions and techniques as those used in [jlo], we define and study "twisted entire cyclic cohomology" and the "twisted Chern character" associated with an appropriate operator-theoretic data called "twisted spectral data", which consists of a spectral triple in the conventional sense of noncommutative geometry ([Con]) and an additional positive operator having specified properties. Furthermore, it is shown that given a spectral triple (in the …
We show that the inertia stack of a topological stack is again a topological stack. We further observe that the inertia stack of an orbispace is again an orbispace. We show how a U(1)-banded gerbe over an orbispace gives rise to a flat line bundle over its inertia stack. Via sheaf theory over topological stacks it gives rise to the twisted delocalized cohomology of the orbispace. With these results and constructions we generalize concepts, which are well-known in the smooth framework, to the topological case. In the smooth case we show, that our sheaf-theoretic definition of twisted delocalize…
We study the twisted cohomology groups of $A_\infty$-algebras defined by twisting elements and their behavior under morphisms and homotopies using the bar construction. We define higher Massey products on the cohomology groups of general $A_\infty$-algebras and establish the naturality under morphisms and their dependency on defining systems. The above constructions are also considered for $C_\infty$-algebras. We construct a spectral sequence converging to the twisted cohomology groups an show that the higher differentials are given by the $A_\infty$-algebraic Massey products.
The main goal of the present paper is the construction of twisted generalized differential cohomology theories and the comprehensive statement of its basic functorial properties. Technically it combines the homotopy theoretic approach to (untwisted) generalized differential cohomology developed by Hopkins-Singer and later by the first author and D. Gepner with the oo-categorical treatement of twisted cohomology by Ando-Blumberg-Gepner. We introduce the notion of a differential twist for a given generalized cohomology theory and construct twisted differential cohomology groups (resp. spectra). …
The initial motivation of this work was to give a topological interpretation of two-periodic twisted de-Rham cohomology which is generalizable to arbitrary coefficients. To this end we develop a sheaf theory in the context of locally compact topological stacks with emphasis on the construction of the sheaf theory operations in unbounded derived categories, elements of Verdier duality and integration. The main result is the construction of a functorial periodization functor associated to a U(1)-gerbe. As applications we verify the $T$-duality isomorphism in periodic twisted cohomology and in pe…
We construct the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence (AHSS) for twisted differential generalized cohomology theories. This generalizes to the twisted setting the authors' corresponding earlier construction for differential cohomology theories, as well as to the differential setting the AHSS for twisted generalized cohomology theories, including that of twisted K-theory by Rosenberg and Atiyah-Segal. In describing twisted differential spectra we build on the work of Bunke-Nikolaus, but we find it useful for our purposes to take an approach that highlights direct analogies with classical bundles…
This article is a survey on the cohomology of a reductive algebraic group with coefficients in twisted representations. A large part of the paper is devoted to the advances obtained by the theory of strict polynomial functors initiated by Friedlander and Suslin in the late nineties. The last section explains that the existence of certain `universal classes' used to prove cohomological finite generation is equivalent to some recent `untwisting theorems' in the theory of strict polynomial functors. We actually provide thereby a new proof of these theorems.
Let $G$ be a finite simple group and $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic dividing the order of $G$. We show that for all $2$-cocycles $α\in Z^2(G;k^\times)$, the first Hochschild cohomology group of the twisted group algebra $HH^1(k_αG)$ is nonzero.
The cup and cap product in twisted Hochschild (co)homology is computed for the standard quantum 2-sphere and used to construct a cyclic 2-cocycle that represents the fundamental Hochschild class.
We consider the global aspects of the 6-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1, 0)$ theory arising from the coupling of the vector multiplet to the tensor multiplet. We show that the Yang-Mills field and its dual, when both are abelianized, combine to define a class in twisted cohomology with the twist arising from the class of the $B$-field, in a duality-symmetric manner. We then show that this lifts naturally to a class in twisted (differential) K-theory. Alternatively, viewing the B-field in both $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories, not as a twist but as an invertible element, leads t…
We prove that for "most" closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M$, the existence of a closed non singular one-form in a given cohomology class $u\in H^1 (M,\bf R)$ is equivalent to the fact that every twisted Alexander polynomial $Δ^H(M,u) \in {\bf Z}[G/\ker u]$ associated to a normal subgroup with finite index $H < π_1(M)$ has a unitary $u$-minimal term.
This is the first of a series of papers on sheaf theory on smooth and topological stacks and its applications. The main result of the present paper is the characterization of the twisted (by a closed integral three-form) de Rham complex on a manifold. As an object in the derived category it will be related with the push-forward of the constant sheaf from a S^1-gerbe with Dixmier-Douady class represented by the three-form. In order to formulate and prove this result we develop in detail the foundations of sheaf theory for smooth stacks.
In this paper, we construct for higher twists that arise from cohomotopy classes, the Chern character in higher twisted K-theory, that maps into higher twisted cohomology. We show that it gives rise to an isomorphism between higher twisted K-theory and higher twisted cohomology over the reals. Finally we compute spherical T-duality in higher twisted K-theory and higher twisted cohomology in very general cases.
We define a symmetric monoidal structure on the parametrised stable homotopy category over a base space with an action of an $E_\infty$ operad. We discuss products, orientations and push-forwards in parametrised cohomology theories corresponding to parametrised ring spectra. Finally, we construct parametrised ring spectra representing twisted K-theory and twisted Spinc-cobordism.
Aguiar and Mahajan introduced a cohomology theory for the twisted coalgebras of Joyal, with particular interest in the computation of their second cohomology group, which gives rise to their deformations. We use the Koszul duality theory between twisted algebras and coalgebras on the twisted coalgebra that gives rise to their cohomology theory to give a new alternative description of it which, in particular, allows for its effective computation. We compute it completely in various examples, including those proposed by Aguiar and Mahajan, and obtain structural results: in particular, we study i…
We exhibit a Poisson module restoring a twisted Poincare duality between Poisson homology and cohomology for the polynomial algebra R=C[X_1,...,X_n] endowed with Poisson bracket arising from a uniparametrised quantum affine space. This Poisson module is obtained as the semiclassical limit of the dualising bimodule for Hochschild homology of the corresponding quantum affine space. As a corollary we compute the Poisson cohomology of R, and so retrieve a result obtained by direct methods (so completely different from ours) by Monnier.
In this paper we introduce exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant K-theory of loop space $LZ$ depending on the (typically non-flat) holonomy line bundle ${\mathcal L}^B$ on $LZ$ induced from a gerbe with connection $B$ on $Z$. We also define exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant Chern character that maps the exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant K-theory of $LZ$ into the exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant cohomology as defined in an earlier paper of ours, and which localises to twisted cohomology of $Z$.
This paper sets out basic properties of motivic twisted K-theory with respect to degree three motivic cohomology classes of weight one. Motivic twisted K-theory is defined in terms of such motivic cohomology classes by taking pullbacks along the universal principal BG_m-bundle for the classifying space of the multiplicative group scheme. We show a Kuenneth isomorphism for homological motivic twisted K-groups computing the latter as a tensor product of K-groups over the K-theory of BG_m. The proof employs an Adams Hopf algebroid and a tri-graded Tor-spectral sequence for motivic twisted K-theor…
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let V be an irreducible representation of SL_n(F). In this paper, we compute the first cohomology of SL_n(F[t]) with coefficients in V. It agrees with H^1(SL_n(F),V) if V is not the adjoint representation, while if V = Ad, the two groups differ by an F-vector space X. We show that if n=2, X is infinite dimensional, while if n>2, dim X = 1. We also study the abelianization of the kernel of the map SL_n(F[t])-->SL_n(F) given by setting t=0, where now F is any field. We conjecture that this abelianization is the adjoint representation sl_n(F) if n>2 and…
We show how a suitably twisted Spin-cobordism spectrum connects to the question of existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on closed, smooth manifolds by building on fundamental work of Gromov, Lawson, Rosenberg, Stolz and others. We then investigate this parametrised spectrum, compute its $mod~2$-cohomology and generalise the Anderson-Brown-Peterson splitting of the regular Spin-cobordism spectrum to the twisted case. Along the way we also describe the $mod~2$-cohomology of various twisted, connective covers of real K-theory.
For an orbifold X and $α\in H^3(X, Z)$, we introduce the twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$ and prove that the Connes-Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the twisted K-groups $K_α^* (X) \otimes C$ and twisted cohomology $H^*_c(X, α)$. This theorem, on the one hand, generalizes a classical result of Baum-Connes, Brylinski-Nistor, and others, that if X is an orbifold then the Chern character establishes an isomorphism between the K-groups of X tensored with C, and the compactly-supported cohomology of the inertia orbifold. On the other hand, it also generalizes a recent result of Ad…
We show that for some finite group block algebras, with nontrivial defect groups, the first Hochschild cohomology is nontrivial. Along the way we obtain methods to investigate the nontriviality of the first Hochschild cohomology of some twisted group algebras.
For an integral cohomology class H of degree n+2 on a space X, we define twisted Morava K-theory K(n)(X; H) at the prime 2, as well as an integral analogue. We explore properties of this twisted cohomology theory, study a twisted Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and give a universal coefficient theorem (in the spirit of Khorami). We extend the construction to define twisted Morava E-theory, and provide applications to string theory and M-theory.
This is a study of twisted K-theory on a product space $T \times M$. The twisting comes from a decomposable cup product class which applies the 1-cohomology of $T$ and the 2-cohomology of $M$. In the case of a topological product, we give a concrete realization for the gerbe associated to a cup product characteristic class and use this to realize twisted $K^1$-theory elements in terms of supercharge sections in a Fredholm bundle. The nontriviality of this construction is proved. Equivariant twisted K-theory and gerbes are studied in the product case as well. This part applies Lie groupoid theo…
