We present tables of velocity dispersions derived from CALIFA V1200 datacubes using Pipe3D. Four different dispersions are extracted from emission (ionized gas) or absorption (stellar) spectra, with two spatial apertures (5'' and 30''). Stellar and ionized gas dispersions are not interchangeable and we determine their distinguishing features. We also compare these dispersions with literature values and construct sample scaling relations to further assess their applicability. We consider revised velocity-based scaling relations using the virial velocity parameter S_K^2 = K V_rot^2 + sigma^2 constructed with each of our dispersions. Our search for the strongest linear correlation between S_K and i-band absolute magnitudes favors the common K ~ 0.5, though the range 0.3 - 0.8 is statistically acceptable. The reduction of scatter in our best stellar mass-virial velocity relations over that of a classic luminosity-velocity relation is minimal; this may however reflect the dominance of massive spirals in our sample.
This work provides an overall characterization of the kinematic behavior of the ionized gas of the galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral field Area (CALIFA), offering kinematic clues to potential users of this survey for including kinematical criteria for specific studies. From the first 200 galaxies observed by CALIFA, we present the 2D kinematic view of the 177 galaxies satisfying a gas detection threshold. After removing the stellar contribution, we used the cross-correlation technique to obtain the radial velocity of the dominant gaseous component. The main kinematic paramete…
The Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, a pioneer in integral field spectroscopy legacy projects, has fostered many studies exploring the information encoded on the spatially resolved data on gaseous and stellar features in the optical range of galaxies. We describe a value-added catalogue of stellar population properties for CALIFA galaxies analysed with the spectral synthesis code STARLIGHT and processed with the PyCASSO platform. Our public data base (http://pycasso.ufsc.br/, mirror at http://pycasso.iaa.es/) comprises 445 galaxies from the CALIFA Data Release 3 with COMB…
We present an extensive compendium of photometrically-determined structural properties for all CALIFA galaxies in the Third Data Release (DR3). We exploit Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images in order to extract one-dimensional (1D) $gri$ surface brightness profiles for all CALIFA DR3 galaxies. We also derive a variety of non-parametric quantities and parametric models fitted to 1D i-band profiles. The galaxy images are decomposed using the 2D bulge-disc decomposition programs IMFIT and GALFIT. The relative performance and merit of our 1D and 2D modelling approaches are assessed. Where possi…
Deriving circular velocities of galaxies from stellar kinematics can provide an estimate of their total dynamical mass, provided a contribution from the velocity dispersion of the stars is taken into account. Molecular gas (e.g., CO) on the other hand, is a dynamically cold tracer and hence acts as an independent circular velocity estimate without needing such a correction. In this paper we test the underlying assumptions of three commonly used dynamical models, deriving circular velocities from stellar kinematics of 54 galaxies (S0-Sd) that have observations of both stellar kinematics from th…
We present a comparative study of molecular and ionized gas kinematics in nearby galaxies. These results are based on observations from the EDGE survey, which measured spatially resolved $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) in 126 nearby galaxies. Every galaxy in EDGE has corresponding resolved ionized gas measurements from CALIFA. Using a sub-sample of 17 rotation dominated, star-forming galaxies where precise molecular gas rotation curves could be extracted, we derive CO and H$α$ rotation curves using the same geometric parameters out to $\gtrsim$1 $R_e$. We find that $\sim$75% of our sample galaxies have small…
We present 80 stellar and ionised gas velocity maps from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey in order to characterize the kinematic orientation of non-interacting galaxies. The study of galaxies in isolation is a key step towards understanding how fast-external processes, such as major mergers, affect kinematic properties in galaxies. We derived the global and individual (projected approaching and receding sides) kinematic position angles (PAs) for both the stellar and ionised gas line-of-sight velocity distributions. When compared to the photometric PA, we find that morp…
Understanding the nature of bulges in disc galaxies can provide important insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies. For instance, the presence of a classical bulge suggests a relatively violent history, in contrast, the presence of simply an inner disc (also referred to as a "pseudobulge") indicates the occurrence of secular evolution processes in the main disc. However, we still lack criteria to effectively categorise bulges, limiting our ability to study their impact on the evolution of the host galaxies. Here we present a recipe to separate inner discs from classical bulges by …
We present new evidence for eight early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA Survey that show clear rotation around their major photometric axis ("prolate rotation"). These are LSBCF560-04, NGC 0647, NGC 0810, NGC 2484, NGC 4874, NGC 5216, NGC 6173 and NGC 6338. Including NGC 5485, a known case of an ETG with stellar prolate rotation, as well as UGC 10695, a further possible candidate for prolate rotation, we report ten CALIFA galaxies in total that show evidence for such a feature in their stellar kinematics. Prolate rotators correspond to ~9% of the volume-corrected sample of CALIFA ETGs, a …
We present the stellar kinematic maps of a large sample of galaxies from the integral-field spectroscopic survey CALIFA. The sample comprises 300 galaxies displaying a wide range of morphologies across the Hubble sequence, from ellipticals to late-type spirals. This dataset allows us to homogeneously extract stellar kinematics up to several effective radii. In this paper, we describe the level of completeness of this subset of galaxies with respect to the full CALIFA sample, as well as the virtues and limitations of the kinematic extraction compared to other well-known integral-field surveys. …
We analysed the optical spectra of HII regions extracted from a sample of 350 galaxies of the CALIFA survey. We calculated total O/H abundances and, for the first time, N/O ratios using the semi-empirical routine HII-CHI-mistry, which, according to Pérez-Montero (2014), is consistent with the direct method and reduces the uncertainty in the O/H derivation using [NII] lines owing to the dispersion in the O/H-N/O relation. Then we performed linear fittings to the abundances as a function of the de-projected galactocentric distances. The analysis of the radial distribution both for O/H and N/O in…
Understanding how galaxies cease to form stars represents an outstanding challenge for galaxy evolution theories. This process of "star formation quenching" has been related to various causes, including Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, the influence of large-scale dynamics, and the environment in which galaxies live. In this paper, we present the first results from a follow-up of CALIFA survey galaxies with observations of molecular gas obtained with the APEX telescope. Together with EDGE survey CARMA observations, we collect $^{12}$CO observations that cover approximately one effective …
We perform spatially resolved stellar population analysis for a sample of 69 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey, including 48 ellipticals and 21 S0's. We generate and quantitatively characterize profiles of light-weighted mean stellar age and metallicity within $\lesssim 2R_e$, as a function of radius and stellar-mass surface density $μ_*$. We study in detail the dependence of profiles on galaxies' global properties, including velocity dispersion $σ_e$, stellar mass, morphology. ETGs are universally characterized by strong, negative metallicity gradi…
We used ionized gas and stellar kinematics for 667 spatially resolved galaxies publicly available from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey (CALIFA) 3rd Data Release with the aim of studying kinematic scaling relations as the Tully $\&$ Fisher (TF) relation using rotation velocity, $V_{rot}$, the Faber $\&$ Jackson (FJ) relation using velocity dispersion, $σ$, and also a combination of $V_{rot}$ and $σ$ through the $S_{K}$ parameter defined as $S_{K}^2 = KV_{rot}^2 + σ^2$ with constant $K$. Late-type and early-type galaxies reproduce the TF and FJ relations. Some early-type galaxie…
We compare the CO(1-0) and H$α$ kinematics in 34 nearby galaxies, selected from the ALMaQUEST and EDGE-CALIFA surveys. We use 3-D Barolo, a 3D tilted ring model, to derive the CO and H$α$ rotation curves. Before comparing rotation curves in the 34 nearby galaxies, we found systematics between the MaNGA and the CALIFA data using eight MaNGA-CALIFA overlapping galaxies. We assume the rotation curves based on the MaNGA data are accurate and made the corresponding correction to the CALIFA data. Our result shows that $\sim$56% (19/34) of our galaxies present slower H$α$ rotation curves compared to …
We estimate the current extinction-corrected H$α$ star formation rate (SFR) of the different morphological components that shape galaxies (bulges, bars, and disks). We use a multi-component photometric decomposition based on SDSS imaging to CALIFA Integral Field Spectroscopy datacubes for a sample of 219 galaxies. This analysis reveals an enhancement of the central SFR and specific SFR (sSFR $=$ SFR/$M_{\star}$) in barred galaxies. Along the Main Sequence, we find more massive galaxies in total have undergone efficient suppression (quenching) of their star formation, in agreement with many stu…
The aim of this paper is to characterize the radial structure of the star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies in the nearby Universe as represented by the CALIFA survey. The sample under study contains 416 galaxies observed with IFS, covering a wide range of Hubble types and stellar masses. Spectral synthesis techniques are applied to obtain radial profiles of the intensity of the star formation rate in the recent past, and the local sSFR. To emphasize the behavior of these properties for galaxies that are on and off the main sequence of star formation (MSSF) we stack the individual radial profil…
While studies of gas-phase metallicity gradients in disc galaxies are common, very little has been done in the acquisition of stellar abundance gradients in the same regions. We present here a comparative study of the stellar metallicity and age distributions in a sample of 62 nearly face-on, spiral galaxies with and without bars, using data from the CALIFA survey. We measure the slopes of the gradients and study their relation with other properties of the galaxies. We find that the mean stellar age and metallicity gradients in the disc are shallow and negative. Furthermore, when normalized to…
We use the stellar kinematics for $2458$ galaxies from the MaNGA survey to explore dynamical scaling relations between the stellar mass $M_{\star}$ and the total velocity parameter at the effective radius, $R_e$, defined as $S_{K}^{2}=KV_{R_e}^{2}+σ_{\star_e}^{2}$, which combines rotation velocity $V_{R_e}$, and velocity dispersion $σ_{\star_e}$. We confirm that spheroidal and spiral galaxies follow the same $M_{\star}-S_{0.5}$ scaling relation with lower scatter than the $M_{\star}-V_{R_e}$ and $M_{\star}-σ_{\star_e}$ ones. We also explore a more general Universal Fundamental Plane described …
This paper aims at providing aperture corrections for emission lines in a sample of spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey (CALIFA) database. In particular, we explore the behavior of the log([OIII]5007/Hbeta)/([NII]6583/Halpha) (O3N2) and log[NII]6583/Halpha (N2) flux ratios since they are closely connected to different empirical calibrations of the oxygen abundances in star forming galaxies. We compute median growth curves of Halpha, Halpha/Hbeta, O3N2 and N2 up to 2.5R_50 and 1.5 disk R_eff. The growth curves simulate the effect of observing galaxies through a…
The Star Formation Rate (SFR) is one of the main parameters used to analyze the evolution of galaxies through time. The need for recovering the light reprocessed by dust commonly requires the use of low spatial resolution far-infrared data. Recombination-line luminosities provide an alternative, although uncertain dust-extinction corrections based on narrow-band imaging or long-slit spectroscopy have traditionally posed a limit to their applicability. Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) is clearly the way to overcome such limitation. We obtain integrated Hα, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR)-ba…
The stellar velocity dispersion, $σ$, is a quantity of crucial importance for spiral galaxies, where it enters fundamental dynamical processes such as gravitational instability and disc heating. Here we analyse a sample of 34 nearby spirals from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) spectroscopic survey, deproject the line-of-sight $σ$ to $σ_{R}$ and present reliable radial profiles of $σ_{R}$ as well as accurate measurements of $\langleσ_{R}\rangle$, the radial average of $σ_{R}$ over one effective (half-light) radius. We show that there is a trend for $σ_{R}$ to increase with de…
EMPRESS. IX. Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies are Very Gas-Rich Dispersion-Dominated Systems: Will JWST Witness Gaseous Turbulent High-z Primordial Galaxies?
The ellipsoid of stellar random motions is a fundamental ingredient of galaxy dynamics. Yet it has long been difficult to constrain this component in disks others than the Milky Way. This article presents the modeling of the azimuthal-to-radial axis ratio of the velocity ellipsoid of galactic disks from stellar dispersion maps using integral field spectroscopy data of the CALIFA survey. The measured azimuthal anisotropy is shown to be not strongly dependent on the assumed vertical-to-radial dispersion ratio of the ellipsoid. The anisotropy distribution shows a large diversity in the orbital st…
In order to study the state of gas in galaxies, diagrams of the relation of optical emission line fluxes are used allowing one to separate main ionization sources: young stars in the H II regions, active galactic nuclei, and shock waves. In the intermediate cases, when the contributions of radiation from OB stars and from shock waves mix, identification becomes uncertain, and the issue remains unresolved on what determines the observed state of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) including the one on large distances from the galactic plane. Adding of an extra parameter - the gas line-of-sight veloci…
We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties and stellar population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies. The Mice provide a perfect case study highlighting the importance of IFS data for improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong ba…
(Abridged) We study the properties of anisotropic and axisymmetric velocity ellipsoids from maps of the gas velocity dispersion in nearby galaxies. This data allow us to measure the azimuthal-to-radial axis ratio of gas velocity ellipsoids, which is a useful tool to study the structure of gaseous orbits in the disk. We also present the first estimates of perturbations in gas velocity dispersion maps by applying an alternative model that considers isotropic and asymmetric random motions. High-quality velocity dispersion maps of the atomic medium at various angular resolutions of the nearby spir…
Gravitational stability of a disc consisting of the gaseous and the stellar components are studied in the linear regime when the gaseous component is turbulent. A phenomenological approach is adopted to describe the turbulence, in which not only the effective surface density but the velocity dispersion of the gaseous component are both scale-dependent as power-law functions of the wavenumber of the perturbations. Also, the stellar component which has gravitational interaction with the gas is considered as a fluid. We calculate growth rate of the perturbations and in the most of the studied cas…

A classical scenario suggests that ULIRGs transform colliding spiral galaxies into a spheroid dominated early-type galaxy. Recent high-resolution simulations have instead shown that, under some circumstances, rotation disks can be preserved during the merging process or rapidly regrown after coalescence. Our goal is to analyze in detail the ionised gas kinematics in a sample of ULIRGs to infer the incidence of gas rotational dynamics in late-stage interacting galaxies and merger remnants. We analysed MUSE data of a sample of 20 nearby (z<0.165) ULIRGs, as part of the "Physics of ULIRGs with MU…

Observations of disk galaxies at z~2 have demonstrated that turbulence driven by gravitational instability can dominate the energetics of the disk. We present a 1D simulation code, which we have made publicly available, that economically evolves these galaxies from z~2 to z~0 on a single CPU in a matter of minutes, tracking column density, metallicity, and velocity dispersions of gaseous and multiple stellar components. We include an H$_2$ regulated star formation law and the effects of stellar heating by transient spiral structure. We use this code to demonstrate a possible explanation for th…
We report on a detailed study of the stellar populations and ionized gas properties in the merger LIRG NGC 2623, analysing optical Integral Field Spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey and PMAS LArr, multiwavelength HST imaging, and OSIRIS narrow band H$α$ and [NII]$λ$6584 imaging. The spectra were processed with the STARLIGHT full spectral fitting code, and the results compared with those for two early-stage merger LIRGs (IC 1623 W and NGC 6090), together with CALIFA Sbc/Sc galaxies. We find that NGC 2623 went through two periods of increased star formation (SF), a first and widespread episode, …
To investigate star formation and assembly processes of massive galaxies, we present here a spatially-resolved stellar populations analysis of a sample of 45 elliptical galaxies (Es) selected from the CALIFA survey. We find rather flat age and [Mg/Fe] radial gradients, weakly dependent on the effective velocity dispersion of the galaxy within half-light radius. However, our analysis shows that metallicity gradients become steeper with increasing galaxy velocity dispersion. In addition, we have homogeneously compared the stellar populations gradients of our sample of Es to a sample of nearby re…
We present Keck/OSIRIS laser guide-star assisted adaptive optics (LGSAO) integral field spectroscopy of [O III] 5007 Angstrom nebular emission from twelve galaxies hosting optically faint (R = 20 - 25; nuLnu ~ 10^44 -10^46 erg/s) active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshift z ~ 2 - 3. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 rest-frame optical imaging, Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectroscopy, and Keck/KCWI rest-UV integral field spectroscopy we demonstrate that both the continuum and emission-line structure of these sources exhibit a wide range of morphologies from compac…
We present stellar rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for 104 quiescent galaxies at $z=0.6-1$ from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) spectroscopic survey. Rotation is typically probed across 10-20kpc, or to an average of 2.7${\rm R_e}$. Combined with central stellar velocity dispersions ($σ_0$) this provides the first determination of the dynamical state of a sample selected by a lack of star formation activity at large lookback time. The most massive galaxies ($M_{\star}>2\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) generally show no or little rotation measured at 5kpc ($|V_5|/σ…
Estimating the bar pattern speed (\Om{}) is one of the main challenges faced in understanding the role of stellar bars in galaxy dynamical evolution. This work aims to characterise different uncertainty sources affecting the Tremaine Weinberg (TW)-method to study the correlation between bar and galaxies physical parameters. We use a sample of 15 MaNGA SDSS-IV galaxies and 3 CALIFA galaxies from \cite{Aguerri2015}. We studied the errors related with (i) galaxy centre determination, (ii) disc position angle (PA) emphasising the difficulties triggered by outer non-axisymmetric structures besides …
We introduce the OSIRIS Lens-Amplified Survey (OLAS), a kinematic survey of gravitationally lensed galaxies at cosmic noon taken with Keck adaptive optics. In this paper we present spatially resolved spectroscopy and nebular emission kinematic maps for 17 star forming galaxies with stellar masses 8 < log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$) < 9.8 and redshifts 1.2 < z < 2.3. OLAS is designed to probe the stellar mass ($M_*$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR) range where simulations suggest that stellar feedback is most effective at driving gaseous outflows that create galaxy-wide potential fluctuations wh…
Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type in cluster environments, however the challenges associated with their observation mean their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood. To address this, we present deep integral field observations of a sample of 31 low-mass ($10^{7.5} <$ M$_\star < 10^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$) early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster with the SAMI instrument. For 21 galaxies our observations are sufficiently deep to construct spatially resolved maps of the stellar velocity and velocity dispersion - for the remaining galaxies we extract global velocities and dis…
One of the most prominent features of galaxy clusters is the presence of a dominant population of massive ellipticals in their cores. Stellar archaeology suggests that these gigantic beasts assembled most of their stars in the early Universe via starbursts. However, the role of dense environments and their detailed physical mechanisms in triggering starburst activities remain unknown. Here we report spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO $J= 3-2$ emission line, with a resolution of about 2.5 kiloparsecs, toward a forming galaxy cluster cor…
We investigate the morphology of the [CII] emission in a sample of "normal" star-forming galaxies at $5<z<7.2$ in relation to their UV (rest-frame) counterpart. We use new ALMA observations of galaxies at $z\sim6-7$ as well as a careful re-analysis of archival ALMA data. In total 29 galaxies were analysed, 21 of which are detected in [CII]. For several of the latter the [CII] emission breaks into multiple components. Only a fraction of these [CII] components, if any, is associated with the primary UV systems, while the bulk of the [CII] emission is associated either with fainter UV components,…
We present a new cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulation for galaxy formation: TNG50, the third and final installment of the IllustrisTNG project. TNG50 evolves 2x2160^3 dark-matter particles and gas cells in a volume 50 comoving Mpc across. It hence reaches a numerical resolution typical of zoom-in simulations, with a baryonic element mass of 8.5x10^4 Msun and an average cell size of 70-140 parsecs in the star-forming regions of galaxies. Simultaneously, TNG50 samples ~700 (6,500) galaxies with stellar masses above 10^10 (10^8) Msun at z=1. Here we investigate the structural and kinema…
Aims. Interacting galaxies show unique irregularities in their kinematic structure. By investigating the spatially resolved kinematics and stellar population properties of galaxies that show irregularities, we can paint a detailed picture of the formation and evolutionary processes that took place during its lifetimes. Methods. In this work, we focus on galaxies with a specific kinematic irregularity, a kinematically distinct stellar core (KDC), in particular, counter-rotating galaxies where the core and main body of the galaxy are rotating in opposite directions. We visually identify eleven M…
We present a study of the vertical structure of the gaseous and stellar disks in a sample of edge-on galaxies (NGC 4157, 4565, and 5907) using BIMA/CARMA 12CO (J = 1 --> 0), VLA H I, and Spitzer 3.6 micron data. In order to take into account projection effects when we measure the disk thickness as a function of radius, we first obtain the inclination by modeling the radio data. Using the measurement of the disk thicknesses and the derived radial profiles of gas and stars, we estimate the corresponding volume densities and vertical velocity dispersions. Both stellar and gas disks have smoothly …
We present the stellar and gaseous kinematics of an Sb galaxy, NGC 3223, with the aim of determining the vertical and radial stellar velocity dispersion as a function of radius, which can help to constrain disk heating theories. Together with the observed NIR photometry, the vertical velocity dispersion is also used to determine the stellar mass-to-light (M/L) ratio, typically one of the largest uncertainties when deriving the dark matter distribution from the observed rotation curve. We find a vertical-to-radial velocity dispersion ratio of sigma_z/sigma_R=1.21+-0.14, significantly higher tha…
We study the spatially-resolved stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ in a high-quality sample of 24 CALIFA galaxies covering a broad range of visual morphology, accounting for stellar velocity and velocity dispersion. The shape of the spaxel-wise probability density function of normalised $s=j_*/j_{*mean}$, PDF($s$), deviates significantly from the near-universal initial distribution expected of baryons in a dark matter halo and can be explained by the expected baryonic effects in galaxy formation that remove and redistribute angular momentum. Further we find that the observed shape of the …
We study the Lya profiles of 36 spectroscopically-detected Lya-emitters (LAEs) at z2-3, using Keck MOSFIRE to measure systemic redshifts and velocity dispersions from rest-frame optical nebular emission lines. The sample has a median optical magnitude R=26.0, and ranges from R23 to R>27, corresponding to rest-frame UV absolute magnitudes M_UV-22 to M_UV>-18.2. Dynamical masses range from M_dyn<1.3e8 Msun to M_dyn=6.8e9 Msun, with a median value of M_dyn=6.3e8 Msun. Thirty of the 36 Lya emission lines are redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity with at least 1 sigma significance, and t…
The ISM is a turbulent, multi-phase, and multi-scale medium following scaling relations. Analytical models of galactic gaseous disks need to take into account the multi-scale and multi-phase nature of the interstellar medium. They can be described as clumpy star-forming accretion disks in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, with the mid-plane pressure balancing the gravity of the gaseous and stellar disk. ISM turbulence is taken into account by applying Galactic scaling relations to the cold atomic and molecular gas phases. Turbulence is maintained through energy injection by supernovae. With th…
Dynamics of clumps within a magnetized advection dominated accretion flow is investigated by solving the collisionless Boltzmann equation and considering the drag force due to the relative velocity between the clumps and the gas. Toroidal component of the magnetic field is assumed to be dominant. Dynamical properties of the hot gaseous component such as the radial and the rotational velocities are affected by the magnetic effects, and so, drag force varies depending on the strength of magnetic field and the velocity dispersion of the clumps is then modified significantly. We show that when mag…
Arp194 is a system of recently collided galaxies, where the southern galaxy (S) passed through the gaseous disc of the northern galaxy (N) which in turn consists of two close components. This system is of special interest due to the presence of regions of active star-formation in the bridge between galaxies, the brightest of which (the region A) has a size of at least 4 kpc. We obtained three spectral slices of the system for different slit positions at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. We estimated the radial distribution of line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion as well as the intensitie…
We present an analysis of the H2 emission-line gas kinematics in the inner < 4 arcsec radius of six nearby spiral galaxies, based on AO-assisted integral-field observations obtained in the K-band with SINFONI/VLT. Four of the six galaxies in our sample display ordered H2 velocity fields, consistent with gas moving in the plane of the galaxy and rotating in the same direction as the stars. However, the gas kinematics is typically far from simple circular motion. We can classify the observed velocity fields into four different types of flows, ordered by increasing complexity: (1) circular motion…
PyEMILI: A New Generation Computer-aided Spectral Line Identifier -- II. Emission-line Identification and Plasma Diagnostics of a Sample of Gaseous Nebulae
We present a model for the origin of the extended law of star formation in which the surface density of star formation ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$) depends not only on the local surface density of the gas ($Σ_{g}$), but also on the stellar surface density ($Σ_{*}$), the velocity dispersion of the stars, and on the scaling laws of turbulence in the gas. We compare our model with the spiral, face-on galaxy NGC 628 and show that the dependence of the star formation rate on the entire set of physical quantities for both gas and stars can help explain both the observed general trends in the $Σ_{g}-Σ_{\rm SFR}$ …
