We present Keck/OSIRIS laser guide-star assisted adaptive optics (LGSAO) integral field spectroscopy of [O III] 5007 Angstrom nebular emission from twelve galaxies hosting optically faint (R = 20 - 25; nuLnu ~ 10^44 -10^46 erg/s) active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshift z ~ 2 - 3. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 rest-frame optical imaging, Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectroscopy, and Keck/KCWI rest-UV integral field spectroscopy we demonstrate that both the continuum and emission-line structure of these sources exhibit a wide range of morphologies from compact isolated point sources to double-AGN merging systems with extensive ~ 50 kpc tidal tails. One of the twelve galaxies previously known to exhibit a proximate damped LyA system coincident in redshift with the galaxy shows evidence for both an extended [O III] narrow-line emission region and spatially offset LyA emission (with morphologically distinct blueshifted and redshifted components) indicative of large scale gas flows photoionized by the central AGN. We do not find widespread evidence of star formation in the host galaxies surrounding these AGN; the [O III] velocity dispersions tend to be high (sigma = 100 - 500 km/s), the continuum morphologies are much more compact than a mass-matched star forming comparison sample, and the diagnostic nebular emission line ratios are dominated by an AGN-like ionizing spectrum. The sample is most consistent with a population of AGN that radiate at approximately their Eddington limit and photoionize extended [O III] nebulae whose characteristic sizes scale approximately as the square root of the AGN luminosity.
A review of some of the papers that discuss the relevance of the temperature structure present in H II regions and planetary nebulae is presented. Particular attention is given to the determination of the chemical abundances of these objects.
The 3MdB (Mexican Million Models database) is a large database of photoionization models for H II regions. The number of free parameters for the models is close to 15, including the description of the ionizing Spectral Energy Distribution (effective temperature, luminosity, surface gravity, for different type of stellar atmosphere models) and the description of the ionized gas (distance to the ionizing source, density, abundances of the most common elements, dust). The outputs of the models are more than 70 emission line intensities, the ionic fractions and temperatures. All the parameters and…
The two papers referred to in the title, claiming the detection of a large-scale massive hot gaseous halo around the Galaxy, have generated a lot of confusion and unwarranted excitement (including public news coverage). However, the papers are seriously flawed in many aspects, including problematic analysis and assumptions, as well as mis-reading and mis-interpreting earlier studies, which are inconsistent with the claim. Here we show examples of such flaws.
Nearly 50 years ago, in the proceedings of the first IAU symposium on planetary nebulae, Lawrence H. Aller and Stanley J. Czyzak said that "the problem of determination of the chemical compositions of planetary and other gaseous nebulae constitutes one of the most exasperating problems in astrophysics". Although the situation has greatly improved over the years, many important problems are still open and new questions have arrived to the field, which still is an active field of study. Here I will review some of the main aspects related to the determination of gaseous abundances in PNe and some…
The analysis and interpretation of the H2 line emission from planetary nebulae have been done in the literature assuming that the molecule survives only in regions where the hydrogen is neutral, as in photodissociation, neutral clumps or shocked regions. However, there is strong observational and theoretical evidence that at least part of the H2 emission is produced inside the ionized region of such objects. The aim of the present work is to calculate and analyze the infrared line emission of H2 produced inside the ionized region of planetary nebulae using a one-dimensional photoionization cod…
In this paper we discuss the calculation of chemical abundances in planetary nebulae and H II regions through ionization correction factors (ICFs). We review the first ICFs proposed in the literature based on ionization potential similarities and we present the most recent ICFs derived from large sample of photoionization models. We also discuss some of the considerations that have to be kept in mind when using ICFs to compute the chemical composition of ionized nebulae.
In this tutorial it is explained the procedure to analyze an optical emission-line spectrum produced by a nebula ionized by massive star formation. Particularly, it is described the methodology used to derive physical properties, such as electron density and temperature, and the ionic abundances of the most representative elements whose emission lines are present in the optical spectrum. The tutorial is focused on the direct method, based on the measurement of the electron temperature to derive the abundances, given that the ionization and thermal equilibrium of the ionized gas is dominated by …
We present a tutorial on the determination of the physical conditions and chemical abundances in gaseous nebulae. We also include a brief review of recent results on the study of gaseous nebulae, their relevance for the study of stellar evolution, galactic chemical evolution, and the evolution of the universe. One of the most important problems in abundance determinations is the existence of a discrepancy between the abundances determined with collisionally excited lines and those determined by recombination lines, this is called the ADF (abundance discrepancy factor) problem; we review result…
The derivation of abundances in gaseous nebulae ionised by massive stars using optical collisionally excited emission lines is studied in this work comparing the direct or $T_e$ method with updated grids of photoionisation models covering a wide range of input conditions of O/H and N/O abundances and ionisation parameter. The abundances in a large sample of compiled objects with at least one auroral line are re-derived and later compared with the $χ^2$ weighted-mean abundances from the models. The agreement between the abundances using the two methods both for O/H and N/O is excellent with no …
We present optical imaging and long slit spectroscopic observations of 9 luminous type 2 AGNs within the redshift range 0.3<z<0.6 based on VLT-FORS2 data. Most objects (6/9) are high luminosity Seyfert 2, and three are type 2 quasars (QSO2), with our sample extending to lower luminosity than previous works. Seven out of nine objects (78%) show morphological evidence for interactions or mergers in the form of disturbed morphologies and/or peculiar features such as tidal tails, amorphous halos, or compact emission line knots. The detection rate of morphological evidence for interaction is consis…
In this contribution, I will briefly review the development of the theory of photoionized gaseous nebulae, highlighting some of the key events. I will then present some recent developments of deep spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) and H II regions, concentrating on observations of faint heavy element optical recombination lines (ORLs). I will show that there is strong evidence that nebulae contain another previously unknown component of cold (about 1,000 K), high-metallicity plasma, probably in the form of H-deficient inclusions embedded in the warm (about 10,000 K) diffuse nebula of "no…
This work provides an overall characterization of the kinematic behavior of the ionized gas of the galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral field Area (CALIFA), offering kinematic clues to potential users of this survey for including kinematical criteria for specific studies. From the first 200 galaxies observed by CALIFA, we present the 2D kinematic view of the 177 galaxies satisfying a gas detection threshold. After removing the stellar contribution, we used the cross-correlation technique to obtain the radial velocity of the dominant gaseous component. The main kinematic paramete…
We present a new method for inferring the metallicity (Z) and ionization parameter (q) of HII regions and star-forming galaxies using strong nebular emission lines (SEL). We use Bayesian inference to derive the joint and marginalized posterior probability density functions for Z and q given a set of observed line fluxes and an input photo-ionization model. Our approach allows the use of arbitrary sets of SELs and the inclusion of flux upper limits. The method provides a self-consistent way of determining the physical conditions of ionized nebulae that is not tied to the arbitrary choice of a p…
The metallicity of galactic gaseous halos provides insights into accretion and feedback of galaxies. The nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 has a multi-component gaseous halo and a background AGN (LQAC 035+042 003) projected 5 kpc above the disk near the minor axis. Against the UV continuum of this AGN, we detect lines from 13 ions associated with NGC 891 in new {\it HST}/COS spectra. Most of the absorption is from the warm ionized gas with $\log T=4.22\pm0.04$, $\log n_{\rm H}=-1.26\pm0.51$, and $\log N_{\rm H}=20.81\pm 0.20$. The metallicity of volatile elements (i.e., C, N, and S) is about half …
Using a sample of nearly half a million galaxies, intersected by over 8 million lines of sight from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, we extend our previous study of the recombination radiation emitted by the gaseous halos of nearby galaxies. We identify an inflection in the radial profile of the H$α$+N[{\small II}] radial emission profile at a projected radius of $\sim 50$ kpc and suggest that beyond this radius the emission from ionized gas in spatially correlated halos dominates the profile. We confirm that this is a viable hypothesis using results from a highly simplified theor…
A vexing puzzle in the study of planetary nebulae and \ion{H}{2} regions is that the plasma diagnostic results based on collisionally excited lines systematically differ from those based on recombination lines. A fairly speculative interpretation is the presence of nonthermal electrons with the so-called $κ$ energy distributions, yet there is little observational evidence to verify or disprove this hypothesis. In this paper, we examine the influence of $κ$-distributed electrons on the emissivities of \ion{O}{2} recombination lines using an approximate method, where the rate coefficients for a …
Abstract This is the first of two papers where we study analytical solutions of a bidimensional low mass gaseous disc slowly rotating around a central mass and submitted to small radial periodic perturbations. Hydrodynamics equations are solved for the equilibrium and perturbed configurations. A wave-like equation for the gas perturbed specific mass is deduced and solved analytically for several cases of exponents of the power law distributions of the unperturbed specific mass and sound speed. It is found that, first, the gas perturbed specific mass displays exponentially spaced maxima, corres…
We perform a homogeneous analysis of the Fe/Ni abundance ratio in eight Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) and three Galactic H II regions that include the Orion nebula, where we study four nebular zones and one shocked region. We use [Fe ii], [Fe iii], and [Ni iii] lines, and ionization correction factors (ICFs) that account for the unobserved ions. We derive an ICF for nickel from an extensive grid of photoionization models. We compare our results with those derived by other authors for 16 neutral clouds in the solar neighbourhood with available Fe/Ni ratios in the literature. We find an excel…
Chemical abundances in the Leo ring, the largest HI cloud in the local Universe, have recently been determined to be close or above solar, incompatible with a previously claimed primordial origin of the ring. The gas, pre-enriched in a galactic disk and tidally stripped, did not manage to form stars very efficiently in intergalactic space. We map nebular lines in 3 dense HI clumps of the Leo ring and complement these data with archival stellar continuum observations to investigate the slow building up of a sparse population of stars in localized areas of the ring. Individual young stars as mas…
We present an analysis to disentangle the connection between physical quantities that characterize the conditions of ionized HII regions -- metallicity ($Z$), ionization parameter ($U$), and electron density ($n_\mathrm{e}$) -- and the global stellar mass ($M_\ast$) and specific star formation rate ($\mathrm{sSFR}=\mathrm{SFR}/M_\ast$) of the host galaxies. We construct composite spectra of galaxies at $0.027 \le z \le 0.25$ from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, separating the sample into bins of $M_\ast$ and sSFR, and estimate the nebular conditions from the emission line flux ratios. Specially, met…
A search for infrared ring nebulae associated with regions of ionized hydrogen has been carried out. The New GPS Very Large Array survey at 20 cm forms the basis of the search, together with observations obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope at 8 and 24 $μ$m and the Herschel Space Telescope at 70 $μ$m. Objects having ring-like morphologies at 8 $μ$m and displaying extended emission at 20 cm were selected visually. Emission at 24 $μ$m having the form of an inner ring or central peak is also observed in the selected objects. A catalog of 99 ring nebulae whose shapes at 8 and 70 $μ$m are well…
Quasar feedback is suspected to play a key role in the evolution of massive galaxies, by removing or reheating gas in quasar host galaxies and thus limiting the amount of star formation. In this paper we continue our investigation of quasar-driven winds on galaxy-wide scales. We conduct Gemini Integral Field Unit spectroscopy of a sample of luminous unobscured (type 1) quasars, to determine the morphology and kinematics of ionized gas around these objects, predominantly via observations of the [O III]5007 emission line. We find that ionized gas nebulae extend out to ~13 kpc from the quasar, th…
High spectral resolution spectroscopy has proved to be very useful for the advancement of chemical abundances studies in photoionized nebulae, such as H II regions and planetary nebulae (PNe). Classical analyses make use of the intensity of bright collisionally excited lines (CELs), which have a strong dependence on the electron temperature and density. By using high resolution spectrophotometric data, our group has led the determination of chemical abundances of some heavy element ions, mainly O++, O+ and C++ from faint recombination lines (RLs), allowing us to deblend them from other nearby …
PyEMILI: A New Generation Computer-aided Spectral Line Identifier -- II. Emission-line Identification and Plasma Diagnostics of a Sample of Gaseous Nebulae
We present spectra of 14 A-type supergiants in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We derive stellar parameters and metallicities, and measure a spectroscopic distance modulus m-M = 28.47 +\- 0.10 (4.9 +\- 0.2 Mpc), in agreement with other methods. We use the stellar characteristic metallicity of M83 and other systems to discuss a version of the galaxy mass-metallicity relation that is independent of the analysis of nebular emission lines and the associated systematic uncertainties. We reproduce the radial metallicity gradient of M83, which flattens at large radii, with a chemical evolution mode…
Using a sample of nearly half million galaxies, intersected by over 7 million lines of sight from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, we trace H$α$ + [N{\small II}] emission from a galactocentric projected radius, $r_p$, of 5 kpc to more than 100 kpc. The emission flux surface brightness is $\propto r_p^{-1.9 \pm 0.4}$. We obtain consistent results using only the H$α$ or [N{\small II}] flux. We measure a stronger signal for the bluer half of the target sample than for the redder half on small scales, $r_p <$ 20 kpc. We obtain a $3σ$ detection of H$α$ + [N{\small II}] emission in the …
We report the results from a pilot search for radio recombination line (RRL) emission at millimeter wavelengths in a small sample of pre-planetary nebulae (pPNe) and young PNe (yPNe) with emerging central ionized regions. Observations of the H30α, H31a, H39a, H41a, H48b, H49b, H51b, and H55g lines at 1 and 3mm have been performed with the IRAM 30 m radio telescope. These lines are excellent probes of the dense inner (<~150 au) and heavily obscured regions of these objects, where the yet unknown agents for PN-shaping originate. We detected mm-RRLs in three objects: CRL 618, MWC 922, and M 2-9. …
After becoming ionized, low-density astrophysical plasmas will begin a process of slow recombination. Models for this still have significant uncertainties. The recombination cannot normally be observed in isolation, because the ionization follows the evolutionary time scale of the ionizing source. Laboratory experiments are unable to reach the appropriate conditions because of the required very long time scales. The extended nebula around the very late helium flash (VLTP) star V4334 Sgr provides a unique laboratory for this kind of study. The sudden loss of the ionizing UV radiation after the …
We carried out new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) observations of a N63A supernova remnant (SNR) from the LMC using ALMA and ASTE. We find three giant molecular clouds toward the northeast, east, and near the center of the SNR. Using the ALMA data, we spatially resolved clumpy molecular clouds embedded within the optical nebulae in both the shock-ionized and photoionized lobes discovered by previous H$α$ and [S II] observations. The total mass of the molecular clouds is $\sim$$800$ $M_{\odot}$ for the shock-ionized region and $\sim$$1700$ $M_{\odot}$ for the photoionized region. Spatially resolved …
We present tables of velocity dispersions derived from CALIFA V1200 datacubes using Pipe3D. Four different dispersions are extracted from emission (ionized gas) or absorption (stellar) spectra, with two spatial apertures (5'' and 30''). Stellar and ionized gas dispersions are not interchangeable and we determine their distinguishing features. We also compare these dispersions with literature values and construct sample scaling relations to further assess their applicability. We consider revised velocity-based scaling relations using the virial velocity parameter S_K^2 = K V_rot^2 + sigma^2 con…
We present Integral Field Spectroscopic (IFS) observations of the nearby ($z\sim0.03$) dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Mrk 739, whose projected nuclear separation is $\sim$3.4~kpc, obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We find that the galaxy has an extended AGN-ionized emission-line region extending up to $\sim 20$ kpc away from the nuclei, while star-forming regions are more centrally concentrated within 2 - 3 kpc. We model the kinematics of the ionized gas surrounding the East nucleus using a circular disk profile, resulting in a pea…
We present the results of a meeting on numerical simulations of ionized nebulae held at the University of Kentucky in conjunction with the celebration of the 70th birthdays of Profs. Donald Osterbrock and Michael Seaton.
Planetary nebulae have been used as tracers of light and kinematics for the stellar populations in early-type galaxies since more than twenty years. Several empirical properties have surfaced: for example the invariant bright cut-off of the planetary nebulae luminosity function and correlations of the luminosity specific PN number with the integrated properties of the parent stellar populations. These observed properties are poorly understood in terms of a simple model of a ionized nebula expanding around a non-evolving central star. In order to make further steps, we need to study self-contai…
Three Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are located in and near the Quintuplet Cluster at the Galactic Center: the Pistol star, G0.120-0.048, and qF362. We present imaging at 19, 25, 31, and 37 μm of the region containing these three LBVs, obtained with SOFIA using FORCAST. We argue that the Pistol and G0.120-0.048 are identical ``twins" that exhibit contrasting nebulae due to the external influence of their different environments. Our images reveal the asymmetric, compressed shell of hot dust surrounding the Pistol Star and provide the first detection of the thermal emission from the symmetric, …
We present first results of our study of a sample of Galactic LBV, aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the LBV phenomenon, by recovering the mass-loss history of the central object from the analysis of its associated nebula. Mass-loss properties have been derived by a synergistic use of different techniques, at different wavelengths, to obtain high-resolution, multi-wavelength maps, tracing the different emitting components coexisting in the stellar ejecta: the ionized/neutral gas and the dust. Evidence for asymmetric mass-loss and observational evidence of possible mutual interac…
Ionized nebulae provide critical insights into the conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM). Their bright emission lines enable the measurement of physical properties, such as the gas-phase metallicity, across galaxy disks and in distant galaxies. The PHANGS--MUSE survey has produced optical spectroscopic coverage of the central star-forming discs of 19 nearby main-sequence galaxies. Here, we use the Hα morphology from this data to identify 30,790 distinct nebulae, finding thousands of nebulae per galaxy. For each nebula, we extract emission line fluxes and, using diagnostic line ratios, id…
We have carried out integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of H$α$, [N II] and [O III] emission lines for a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and weak emission-line stars (wels). Comparing their spatially-resolved kinematic observations with morpho-kinematic models allowed us to disentangle their three-dimensional gaseous structures. Our results indicate that these PNe have axisymmetric morphologies, either bipolar or elliptical. In many cases the associated kinematic maps for the PNe around hot central stars also reveal the presence of so-called fast low-io…
We compile published spectroscopic data and [O III] magnitudes of almost 500 extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) in 13 galaxies of various masses and morphological types. This is the first paper of a series that aims to analyze the PN populations and their progenitors in these galaxies. Although the samples are not complete or homogeneous we obtain some first findings through the comparison of a few intensity line ratios and nebular parameters. We find that the ionized masses and the luminosities in H$β$, L$_{Hβ}$, of around 30 objects previously identified as PNe indicate that they are most…
Several decades of observations and discoveries have shown that high-redshift AGN and massive galaxies are often surrounded by giant Lyman-alpha nebulae extending in some cases up to 500 kpc in size. In this review, I discuss the properties of the such nebulae discovered at z>2 and their connection with gas flows in and around the galaxies and their halos. In particular, I show how current observations are used to constrain the physical properties and origin of the emitting gas in terms of the Lyman-alpha photon production processes and kinematical signatures. These studies suggest that recomb…
The nebulae associated to four Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been observed at 5.5 and 9 GHz using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and radio emission has been detected for first time in these sources, R127, R143, S61 and S119. The radio maps of the nebulae have an angular resolution of \sim 1.5" and a sensitivity of 1.5-3.0\times10-2 mJy beam-1, and show a very similar morphology to that observed in Hα. This similarity permit us to assume that the Hα emission is not affected by strong intrinsic extinction due to dust within the nebulae. We estima…
We study the relation between nitrogen and oxygen abundances as a function of metallicity for a sample of emission-line objects for which a direct measurement of the metallicity has been possible. This sample is representative of the very different conditions in ionization and chemical enrichement that we can find in the Universe. We first construct the N/O vs. O/H diagram and we discuss its large dispersion at all metallicity regimes. Using the same sample and a large grid of photoionization models covering very different values of the N/O ratio, we then study the most widely used strong-line…
Many Early-type galaxies (ETG) have ionized gas emission in their centres that extends to scales of ~ 1kpc. The majority of such objects are classified as LINERs, but the nature of their ionizing source is still not clear. The kinematics associated with these gaseous structures usually shows deviations from a pure rotational motion due to non-gravitational effects or to non-axisymmetric potentials. This is the third of a series of papers that describes a sample of 10 nearby and massive ETG observed with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph in Integral Field mode installed on the Gemini-South t…
Deep spectrophotometry has proved to be a fundamental tool to improve our knowledge on the chemical content of planetary nebulae. With the arrival of very efficient spectrographs installed in the largest ground-based telescopes, outstanding spectra have been obtained. These data are essential to constrain state-of-the-art nucleosynthesis models in asymptotic giant branch stars and, in general, to understand the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. In this paper we review the last advances on the chemical composition of the ionized gas in planetary nebulae based on faint emission lines observed th…
Aims. As a new approach to the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies, our goal is to demonstrate in NGC300 that integral field spectroscopy with high spatial resolution and excellent seeing conditions reaches an unprecedented depth in severely crowded fields. Methods. MUSE observations with seven pointings in NGC300 have resulted in datacubes that are analyzed in four ways: (1) PSF-fitting 3D spectroscopy with PampelMUSE yields deblended spectra of individually distinguishable stars. The technique also provides samples of planetary nebulae that are complete down to m5007=28.…
Ionized nebulae have been targets of interest since the introduction of the telescope centuries ago. These isolated, "classical" H II regions gave us some of the earliest insight into the copious feedback energy that stars inject into the interstellar medium. Their unique spectra contain information about the quality and quantity of the ionizing field as well as the temperature, density, and metallicity of these discrete locations in the Galaxy. With increasing sensitivity across many spectral domains, we now know that ionized gas is not localized to massive star regions in many star-forming g…
We have obtained spectroscopic observations of the nebulae around seven Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, four in the Milky Way (WR 8, 16, 18 and 40) and three in the LMC (BAT99-2, -11 and -38). They were observed using the ESO NTT with the EFOSC-2 instrument, except for one nebula, NGC 3199, which was observed using the UVES echelle spectrometer on the VLT. The aims of these observations were to (a) quantify the degree of chemical enrichment in WR nebulae which had previously been suggested to have abundances reflecting nucleosynthetic processing; and (b) to attempt to detect the far-red lines of neutra…
