Several radio galaxies, such as 3C\,326\,N, show signatures of jet--ISM coupling, but a complete theoretical framework for explaining them is still lacking. Interpreting these observations requires a detailed understanding of the gas distribution, geometry, and outflow energetics. In this paper, we use three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations to investigate jet--ISM coupling in inhomogeneous gaseous disks, exploring a parameter space spanning different cloud configurations, jet powers, and central disk densities. Our simulations incorporate a numerical turbulence injection scheme that maintains vertical support in the disk, preventing the unphysical collapse encountered in previous studies. We find that jet--ISM coupling is strongly governed by the underlying cloud configuration, leading to distinct outflow morphologies, velocity dispersions, and kinetic energies. Simulations with small-scale ($l_{\rm c,max}=50$~pc) clouds produce the highest velocity dispersions and kinetic energies, whereas large-scale cloud configurations ($l_{\rm c,max}=250$~pc) yield the lowest values, with mixed cloud distributions exhibiting intermediate behavior. In addition, mixed cloud configurations give rise to asymmetric jet propagation, naturally producing unequal lobe lengths similar to those observed in radio galaxies. We compare our fiducial simulation (a $10^{45}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$ jet interacting with a mixed cloud configuration) with observations of 3C\,326\,N, focusing on the morphology of the jet-driven bubble, synthetic emission and the gas kinematics. Our results successfully reproduce the observed properties, providing strong evidence that jet--ISM interactions can account for the wide bubble and the complex gas kinematics observed in this system.
We present a detailed analysis of the gaseous component of the Si K edge using high-resolution Chandra spectra of low-mass X-ray binaries. We fit the spectra with amodified version of the ISMabs model, including new photoabsorption cross sectionscomputed for all Si ionic species. We estimate column densities for Si i, Si ii, Si iii, Si xii and Si xiii, which trace the warm, intermediate temperature and hot phases of the Galactic interstellar medium. We find that the ionic fractions of the first two phases are similar. This may be due to the physical state of the plasma determined by the temper…
We introduce the LYRA project, a new high resolution galaxy formation model built within the framework of the cosmological hydro-dynamical moving mesh code AREPO. The model resolves the multi-phase interstellar medium down to 10 K. It forms individual stars sampled from the initial mass function (IMF), and tracks their lifetimes and death pathways individually. Single supernova (SN) blast waves with variable energy are followed within the hydrodynamic calculation to interact with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). In this paper, we present the methods and apply the model to a $10^{10} …
We investigate the formation of jellyfish galaxies using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of gas-rich dwarf galaxies with a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the ram-pressure-stripped (RPS) ISM is the dominant source of molecular clumps in the near wake within 10 kpc from the galactic plane, while in-situ formation is the major channel for dense gas in the distant tail of the gas-rich galaxy. Only 20% of the molecular clumps in the near wake originate from the intracluster medium (ICM); however, the fraction reaches 50% in the clumps located at $80\,{\rm kpc}$ from the gala…
The nature of galactic spiral arms in disc galaxies remains elusive. Regardless of the spiral model, arms are expected to play a role in sculpting the star-forming interstellar medium. As such, different arm models may result in differences in the structure of the interstellar medium and molecular cloud properties. In this study we present simulations of galactic discs subject to spiral arm perturbations of different natures. We find very little difference in how the cloud population or gas kinematics vary between the different grand-design spirals, indicting that the interstellar medium on cl…
Modern observations of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies detect a variety of atomic and molecular species. The goal is to connect these observations to the astrochemical properties of the ISM. 3D hydro-chemical simulations attempt this but due to extreme computational cost, they have to rely on simplified chemical networks and are bound to individual case studies. We present an alternative approach which models the ISM at larger scales by an ensemble of pre-calculated 1D thermo-chemical photodissociation region (PDR) calculations that determine the abundance and excitation of atomic an…
We study gas inflows onto supermassive black holes using hydrodynamics simulations of isolated galaxies and idealized galaxy mergers with an explicit, multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). Our simulations use the recently developed ISM and stellar evolution model called Stars and MUltiphase Gas in GaLaxiEs (SMUGGLE). We implement a novel super-Lagrangian refinement scheme that increases the gas mass resolution in the immediate neighborhood of the black holes (BHs) to accurately resolve gas accretion. We do not include black hole feedback in our simulations. We find that the complex and turbule…
Ranging from a few pc to hundreds of kpc in size, radio jets have, during their evolution, an impact on their gaseous environment on a large range of scales. While their effect on larger scales is well established, it is now becoming clear that they can also strongly affect the interstellar medium (ISM) inside the host galaxy. Particularly important is the initial phase ($<10^6$ yr) of the evolution of the radio jet, when they expand into the inner few kpc of the host galaxy. Here we report on results obtained for a representative group of young radio galaxies using the cold molecular gas as a…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the gaseous medium surrounding the nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) Fornax A. Using MeerKAT, ALMA and MUSE observations we reveal a complex distribution of the atomic (HI), molecular (CO), and ionised gas in its centre and along the radio jets. By studying the multi-scale kinematics of the multi-phase gas, we reveal the presence of concurrent AGN feeding and feedback phenomena. Several clouds and an extended 3 kpc filament -- perpendicular to the radio jets and the inner disk ($r\lesssim 4.5$ kpc) -- show highly-turbulent kinematics, which likely indu…
We use the results of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interactions in a galaxy with a radio-loud AGN to quantify the extent of ionization in the central few kpcs of the gaseous galactic disc. We perform post-process radiative transfer of AGN radiation through the simulated gaseous jet-perturbed disc to estimate the extent of photo-ionization by the AGN with an incident luminosity of $10^{45}~\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$. We also map the gas that is collisionally ionized due to shocks driven by the jet. The analysis was carried out for simulations with similar jet power ($10^{45}~\mat…
Physical and chemical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at sub-galactic ($\sim$kpc) scales play an indispensable role in controlling the ability of gas to form stars. As part of the SMAUG (Simulating Multiscale Astrophysics to Understand Galaxies) project, in this paper, we use the TNG50 cosmological simulation to explore the physical parameter space of 8 resolved ISM properties in star-forming regions to constrain the areas of this hyperspace over which most star-forming environments exist. We deconstruct our simulated galaxies spanning a wide range of mass (M$_\star = 10^{7-11}$ M$…
It has been argued that the low-mass primordial stars ($m_{\rm Pop III}\,\leq 0.8\,M_\odot$) are likely to enter the main sequence and hence possibly be found in the present-day Galaxy. However, due to limitations in existing numerical capabilities, current three-dimensional (3D) simulations of disk fragmentation are capable of following only a few thousands of years of evolution after the formation of the first protostar. In this work we use a modified version of {\sc Gadget}-2 smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) code to present the results of non-linear collapse of the gas clouds associated…
The ISM is a turbulent, multi-phase, and multi-scale medium following scaling relations. Analytical models of galactic gaseous disks need to take into account the multi-scale and multi-phase nature of the interstellar medium. They can be described as clumpy star-forming accretion disks in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium, with the mid-plane pressure balancing the gravity of the gaseous and stellar disk. ISM turbulence is taken into account by applying Galactic scaling relations to the cold atomic and molecular gas phases. Turbulence is maintained through energy injection by supernovae. With th…
Molecular clouds (MCs) in galaxies are complex places with many phases. It is, therefore, essential to study the physics and kinematics of the MCs using multiple emission lines. We probe the physics of the molecular gas and dust in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 7331 using multiple emission lines, i.e. carbon monoxide (CO), 24μm and far-ultraviolet (FUV) data. 14 positions were targeted across the gaseous disc of NGC 7331. We found that CO intensities, gas mass, gas surface density, and 24μm-to-FUV flux ratio (i.e. the extinction) increase up to about 40 arcsec from the centre and then start to …

The Interstellar Medium (ISM) comprises gases at different temperatures and densities, including ionized, atomic, molecular species, and dust particles. The neutral ISM is dominated by neutral hydrogen and has ionization fractions up to 8%. The concentration of chemical elements heavier than helium (metallicity) spans orders of magnitudes in Galactic stars, because they formed at different times. Instead, the gas in the Solar vicinity is assumed to be well mixed and have Solar metallicity in traditional chemical evolution models. The ISM chemical abundances can be accurately measured with UV a…
Spiral arms greatly affect gas flows and star formation in disk galaxies. We use local three-dimensional simulations of the vertically-stratified, self-gravitating, differentially-rotating, interstellar medium (ISM) subject to a stellar spiral potential to study the effects of spiral arms on star formation and formation of arm spurs/feathers. We adopt the TIGRESS framework of Kim & Ostriker (2017) to handle radiative heating and cooling, star formation, and ensuing supernova (SN) feedback. We find that more than 90% of star formation takes place in spiral arms, but the global star formation ra…
We present optical spectroscopic and milli-arcsecond scale radio continuum observations of the quasar M1540-1453 ($z_{em}$ = 2.104$\pm$0.002) that shows associated HI 21-cm absorption at $z_{abs}$ = 2.1139. At sub-kpc scales, the powerful radio source with 1.4 GHz luminosity of $5.9\times10^{27}$ WHz$^{-1}$ shows Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I morphology caused by the interaction with dense gas within 70 pc from the AGN. Interestingly, while there are indications for the presence of absorption from low-ionization species like FeII, SiII and SiIII in the optical spectrum, the expected strong dampe…
Expanding nebulae are produced by mass loss from stars, especially during late stages of evolution. Multi-dimensional simulation of these nebulae requires high resolution near the star and permits resolution that decreases with distance from the star, ideally with adaptive timesteps. We report the implementation and testing of static mesh-refinement in the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code PION, and document its performance for 2D and 3D calculations. The bow shock produced by a hot, magnetized, slowly rotating star as it moves through the magnetized ISM is simulated in 3D, highlighting diff…
