We study the spatially-resolved stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ in a high-quality sample of 24 CALIFA galaxies covering a broad range of visual morphology, accounting for stellar velocity and velocity dispersion. The shape of the spaxel-wise probability density function of normalised $s=j_*/j_{*mean}$, PDF($s$), deviates significantly from the near-universal initial distribution expected of baryons in a dark matter halo and can be explained by the expected baryonic effects in galaxy formation that remove and redistribute angular momentum. Further we find that the observed shape of the PDF($s$) correlates significantly with photometric morphology, where late-type galaxies have PDF($s$) that is similar to a normal distribution, whereas early types have a strongly-skewed PDF($s$) resulting from an excess of low-angular momentum material. Galaxies that are known to host pseudobulges (bulge Sersic index $n_b <2.2$) tend to have less skewed bulge PDF($s$), with skewness $(b_{1rb})\lesssim0.8$. The PDF($s$) encodes both kinematic and photometric information and appears to be a robust tracer of morphology. Its use is motivated by the desire to move away from traditional component-based classifications which are subject to observer bias, to classification on a galaxy's fundamental (stellar mass, angular momentum) properties. In future, PDF($s$) may also be useful as a kinematic decomposition tool.
The SAMI Galaxy Survey: the link between angular momentum and optical morphology
I review the insights emerging from recent large kinematic surveys of galaxies at low redshift, with particular reference to the SAMI, CALIFA and MaNGA surveys. These new observations provide a more comprehensive picture of the angular momentum properties of galaxies over wide ranges in mass, morphology and environment in the present-day universe. I focus on the distribution of angular momentum within galaxies of various types and the relationship between mass, morphology and specific angular momentum. I discuss the implications of the new results for models of galaxy assembly.
We use a combination of data from the MaNGA survey and MaNGA-like observations in IllustrisTNG100 to determine the prevalence of misalignment between the rotational axes of stars and gas. This census paper outlines the typical characteristics of misaligned galaxies in both observations and simulations to determine their fundamental relationship with morphology and angular momentum. We present a sample of ~4500 galaxies from MaNGA with kinematic classifications which we use to demonstrate that the prevalence of misalignment is strongly dependent on morphology. The misaligned fraction sharply in…
We present an analysis of the gas dynamics of star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 using data from the KMOS Galaxy Evolution Survey (KGES). We quantify the morphology of the galaxies using $HST$ CANDELS imaging parametrically and non-parametrically. We combine the H$α$ dynamics from KMOS with the high-resolution imaging to derive the relation between stellar mass (M$_{*}$) and stellar specific angular momentum (j$_{*}$). We show that high-redshift star-forming galaxies at z~1.5 follow a power-law trend in specific stellar angular momentum with stellar mass similar to that of local late-type galaxies…
We use the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to investigate the stellar specific angular momenta ($j_{\ast}$) of $\sim$12,000 central galaxies at $z=0$ in a full cosmological context, with stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$) ranging from $10^{9}$ to $10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$. We find that the $j_{\ast}$-$M_{\ast}$ relations for early-type and late-type galaxies in IllustrisTNG are in good overall agreement with observations, and that these galaxy types typically `retain' $\sim$10-20 and $\sim$50-60 per cent of their host haloes' specific angular momenta, respectively, with some dependen…
The HH 211 protostellar system is currently the youngest Class 0 system found with a rotating disk. We have mapped it at ~ 50 au (0.16") resolution, studying its magnetic field morphology with dust polarization in continuum at 232 and 358 GHz and its kinematics in C18O J=2-1 line. A flattened envelope extending out to ~ 400 au from the disk is detected in the continuum and C18O, slightly misaligned with the disk by 8 degree. It is spiraling inwards and expected to transform into a rotating disk at ~ 20 au, consistent with the disk radius estimated before. It appears to have a constant specific…
We investigate the formation and morphological evolution of the first galaxies in the cosmic morning ($10 \gtrsim z \gtrsim 4$) using the Horizon Run 5 (HR5) simulation. For galaxies above the stellar mass $M_{\star, {\rm min}} = 2\times 10^9\,M_{\odot}$, we classify them into disk, spheroid, and irregular types according to their asymmetry and stellar mass morphology. We find that about 2/3 of the galaxies have a Sérsic index $< 1.5$, reflecting the dominance of disk-type morphology in the cosmic morning. The rest are evenly distributed as incidental and transient irregulars or spheroids. The…
Using the Simba cosmological simulations to measure the planar relation between stellar specific angular momentum, mass and effective surface brightness
We use high-resolution HI data from the WHISP survey to study the HI and angular momentum properties of a sample of 114 late-type galaxies. We explore the specific baryonic angular momentum -- baryonic mass ($j_b - M_b$) relation, and find that an unbroken power law of the form $j_b \propto M_b^{0.55 \pm 0.02}$ fits the data well, with an intrinsic scatter of $\sim 0.13 \pm 0.01$ dex. We revisit the relation between the atomic gas fraction, $f_{atm}$, and the integrated atomic stability parameter $q$ (the $f_{atm} - q$ relation), originally introduced by Obreschkow et al., and probe this param…
Evolution of the brightest cluster galaxies: the influence of morphology, stellar mass and environment
Radio-loud active galaxies have two accretion modes [radiatively inefficient (RI) and radiatively efficient (RE)], with distinct optical and infrared signatures, and two jet dynamical behaviours, which in arcsec- to arcmin-resolution radio surveys manifest primarily as centre- or edge-brightened structures [Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I and II]. The nature of the relationship between accretion mode and radio morphology (FR class) has been the subject of long debate. We present a comprehensive investigation of this relationship for a sample of 286 well-resolved radio galaxies in the LOFAR Two-met…
Until a decade ago, galaxy formation simulations were unable to simultaneously reproduce the observed angular momentum (AM) of galaxy disks and bulges. Improvements in the interstellar medium and stellar feedback modelling, together with advances in computational capabilities, have allowed the current generation of cosmological galaxy formation simulations to reproduce the diversity of AM and morphology that is observed in local galaxies. In this review I discuss where we currently stand in this area from the perspective of hydrodynamical simulations, specifically how galaxies gain their AM, a…
We present a detailed study of the stellar mass vs. specific angular momentum (AM) relation (Fall relation) for a representative sample of 564 nearby galaxies in the eXtended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS). We focus on the dependence of the Fall relation's slope on galaxy type and the galaxy properties regulating its scatter. Stellar specific AM is determined by combining single-dish H{\sc i} velocity widths and stellar mass profiles for all H{\sc i} detections in the xGASS sample. At fixed morphology (or bulge-to-total ratio), we find that the power law slope of the Fall relation is consis…
We use high-resolution maps of the molecular interstellar medium (ISM) in the centres of eighty-six nearby galaxies from the millimetre-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) and Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) surveys to investigate the physical mechanisms setting the morphology of the ISM at molecular cloud scales. We show that early-type galaxies tend to have smooth, regular molecular gas morphologies, while the ISM in spiral galaxy bulges is much more asymmetric and clumpy when observed at the same spatial scales. We quantify these differe…

We describe the SDSS-IV MaNGA PyMorph Photometric (MPP-VAC) and MaNGA Deep Learning Morphology (MDLM-VAC) Value Added Catalogs. The MPP-VAC provides photometric parameters from Sérsic and Sérsic+Exponential fits to the 2D surface brightness profiles of the MaNGA DR15 galaxy sample. Compared to previous PyMorph analyses of SDSS imaging, our analysis of the MaNGA DR15 incorporates three improvements: the most recent SDSS images; modified criteria for determining bulge-to-disk decompositions; and the fits in MPP-VAC have been eye-balled, and re-fit if necessary, for additional reliability. A comp…
We have carried out a controlled comparison of the structural and kinematic properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Milky Way mass galaxies in the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulations. Very striking differences are found. At z=0, gas column density and temperature profiles at large radii ($\sim 100$ kpc) correlate strongly with disk gas mass fraction in Illustris, but not in TNG. The neutral gas at large radii is preferentially aligned in the plane of the disk in TNG, whereas it is much more isotropic in Illustris. The vertical coherence scale of the rotationally supported gas i…
We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 3 (86-100 GHz; $\sim$80 mas angular resolution) and Band 4 (146-160 GHz; $\sim$50 mas angular resolution) observations of the dust continuum emission towards the archetypal and ongoing accretion burst young stellar object FU Ori, which simultaneously covered its companion, FU Ori S. In addition, we present near-infrared (2-2.45 $μ$m) observations of FU Ori taken with the General Relativity Analysis via VLT InTerferometrY (GRAVITY; $\sim$1 mas angular resolution) instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). We find…
The angular momentum of galaxies controls the kinematics of their stars, which in turn drives observable quantities such as the apparent radius, the bulge fraction, and the alignment with other nearby structures. To show how angular momentum of galaxies is determined, we build high (${35}\,\mathrm{pc}$) resolution numerical experiments in which we increase or decrease the angular momentum of the Lagrangian patches in the early universe. We simulate three galaxies over their histories from $z=200$ to $z=2$, each with five different choices for the angular momentum (fifteen simulations in total)…
