We use accurate radial velocities for 1981 member stars in 20 Galactic globular clusters, collected within our large survey aimed at the analysis of the Na-O anti-correlation, to study the internal kinematics of the clusters. We performed the first systematic exploration of the possible connections between cluster kinematics and the multiple populations phenomenon in GCs. We did not find any significant correlation between Na abundance and either velocity dispersion or systemic rotation. We searched for systemic rotation in the eight clusters of our sample that lack such analysis from previous works in the literature (NGC2808, NGC5904, NGC6171, NGC6254, NGC6397, NGC6388, NGC6441, and NGC6838). These clusters are found to span a large range of rotational amplitudes, from ~0.0 km/s (NGC6397) to ~13.0 km/s (NGC6441). We found a significant correlation between the ratio of rotational velocity to central velocity dispersion (V_{rot}/sigma_0) and the Horizontal Branch Morphology parameter (B-R)/(B+R+V). V_{rot}/sigma_0 is found to correlate also with metallicity, possibly hinting to a significant role of dissipation in the process of formation of globular clusters. V_{rot} is found to correlate well with (B-R)/(B+R+V), M_V, sigma_0 and [Fe/H]. All these correlations strongly suggest that systemic rotation may be intimately linked with the processes that led to the formation of globular clusters and the stellar populations they host.
It is widely accepted that individual Galactic globular clusters harbor two coeval generations of stars, the first one born with the `standard' $α$-enhanced metal mixture observed in field Halo objects, the second one characterized by an anticorrelated CN-ONa abundance pattern overimposed on the first generation, $α$-enhanced metal mixture. We have investigated with appropriate stellar population synthesis models how this second generation of stars affects the integrated spectrum of a typical metal rich Galactic globular cluster, like 47\,Tuc, focusing our analysis on the widely used Lick-type…

We present abundances of Fe, Na, and O for 1409 red giant stars in 15 galactic globular clusters, derived from the homogeneous analysis of high resolution FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectra. Combining the present data with previous results, we obtained a total sample of 1958 stars in 19 clusters, the largest and most homogeneous database of this kind to date. Our GCs have [Fe/H] from -2.4 to -0.4, with a wide variety of global parameters (morphology of the horizontal branch, mass, concentration, etc). For all clusters we find the Na-O anticorrelation, the classical signature of proton-capture reactions in…
Helium has been proposed as the key element to interpret the observed multiple main sequences (MS), subgiant branches (SGB) and red giant branches (RGB), as well as the complex horizontal branch (HB) morphology in Globular Clusters (GC). However, up to now, He was never directly measured in suitable GC stars (8500<Teff<11500 K) with the purpose of verify this hypothesis. We studied 7 hot blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars (Teff<11500 K) in the GC NGC 6752 with the purpose to measure their Helium content. In addition Fe,Cr,Si,Ti,O,Na, and Ba abundances were measured. We could measure He abundan…
We present homogeneous abundances for Fe and some of the elements involved in the proton-capture reactions (O, Na, Mg, Al, and Si) for 202 red giants in 17 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) from the analysis of high resolution UVES spectra obtained with FLAMES@ESO-VLT2. Our programme clusters span almost the whole range in metallicity of GCs and were selected to sample the widest range of global parameters (HB morphology, masses, concentration, etc). Here we focus on the discussion of the Na-O and Mg-Al anticorrelations and related issues. Our study finds clear Na and O star-to-star abundance v…
Globular clusters (GCs) are the oldest stellar systems in the Milky Way. Long time considered as simple stellar populations, nowadays we recognize their complex star formation history through precise abundance analysis of a variety of chemical elements in individual cluster members. Although we do not necessarily see clues for multiple populations in all GC colour-magnitude diagrams, all GCs present significant spreads and certain anticorrelations between their light and alpha element abundances. Furthermore, the heavy element abundances in individual stars of the primordial generation and the…
Information on globular clusters (GC) formation mechanisms can be gathered by studying the chemical signature of the multiple populations that compose these stellar systems. In particular, we are investigating the anticorrelations among O, Na, Al, and Mg to explore the influence of cluster mass and environment on GCs in the Milky Way and in extragalactic systems. We present here the results obtained on NGC 6139 which, on the basis of its horizontal branch morphology, had been proposed to be dominated by first-generation stars. In our extensive study based on high resolution spectroscopy, the f…
We present the molecular gas morphology and kinematics of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies obtained from our 230~GHz ALMA observations. The CO J=2-1 kinematics within the inner $\sim30$" ($\lesssim9$~kpc) reveals rotation patterns that have been explored using the Bertola rotation model and a modified version of the Kinemetry package. The latter algorithm reveals various deviations from pure circular rotation in the inner kiloparsec of all seven galaxies, including kinematic twists, decoupled and counter-rotating cores. A comparison of the global molecular gas and stellar kinematics show overall …

In order to account for the chemical composition of a stellar second generation (SG), Globular Clusters (GCs) evolution models based on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) scenario so far included only the yields available for the massive AGB stars, while the possible role of super-AGB ejecta was either extrapolated or not considered. In this work, we explore the role of super-AGB ejecta using yields recently calculated by Ventura and D'Antona. Models of clusters showing extended Na-O anticorrelations, like NGC 2808, indicate that a SG formation history similar to that outlined in our previous w…
We observed the supernova remnant (SNR) Puppis A in the 21 cm line with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with the aim of determining the systemic velocity and, hence, the corresponding kinematic distance. For the compact, background sources in the field, we obtain absorption spectra by applying two methods: (a) subtracting profiles on- and off-source towards continuum emission, and (b) filtering short spacial frequencies in the Fourier plane to remove large scale emission. One of the brightest features to the East of the shell of Puppis A was found to be a background source, probably extr…
We present high-resolution far-UV spectroscopy of the 14 galaxies of the Lyman Alpha Reference Sample; a sample of strongly star-forming galaxies at low redshifts ($0.028 < z < 0.18$). We compare the derived properties to global properties derived from multi band imaging and 21 cm HI interferometry and single dish observations, as well as archival optical SDSS spectra. Besides the Lyman $α$ line, the spectra contain a number of metal absorption features allowing us to probe the kinematics of the neutral ISM and evaluate the optical depth and and covering fraction of the neutral medium as a fun…
We selected a sample of 76 Lya emitting galaxies from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) at 2<z<4. We estimated the velocity of the neutral gas flowing out of the interstellar medium as the velocity offset, Deltav, between the systemic redshift (zsys) and the center of low-ionization absorption line systems (LIS). To increase the SN of VUDS spectra, we stacked subsamples. We measured the systemic redshift from the rest-frame UV spectroscopic data using the CIII]1908 nebular emission line, and we considered SiII1526 as the highest signal-to-noise LIS line. We calculated the Lya peak shift with …
We present high-frequency Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) continuum and spectral line (NH3, H64$α$, and H63$α$) observations of the Galactic Center Radio Arc region, covering the Sickle H II region, the Quintuplet cluster, and molecular clouds M0.20-0.033 and M0.10-0.08. These observations show that the two velocity components of M0.20-0.033 (~25 & 80 km/s), previously thought to be separate clouds along the same line-of-sight, are physically connected in position-velocity space via a third southern component around 50 km/s. Further position-velocity analysis of the surrounding region, u…
We present the abundance analysis of 82 red giant branch stars in the dense, metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6093 (M 80), the largest sample of stars analyzed in this way for this cluster. From high resolution UVES spectra of 14 stars and intermediate resolution GIRAFFE spectra for the other stars we derived abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu. On our UVES metallicity scale the mean metal abundance of M 80 is [Fe/H]=-1.791+/-0.006+/-0.076 (+/-statistical +/-systematic error) with rms=0.023 (14 stars). M 80 shows star to …
NGC1850 is the nearest Young Massive Cluster of the Local Group with a mass similar to those of Galactic globular clusters. Recent studies have revealed an extended morphology of its MSTO, which can be interpreted as a spread in either age or internal rotation. An accurate spectroscopic determination of its chemical properties is still missing. We analyse spectra obtained with MUSE in adaptive optics mode of 1167 stars in both components of this cluster (NGC1850A and NGC1850B). Thanks to this dataset, we measure an average metallicity of <[M/H]>=-0.31 +/- 0.01, a mean Ba abundance of <[Ba/Fe]>…
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used for high angular resolution imaging of 71 southern class I methanol maser sources quasi-simultaneously at 36 and 44 GHz. The data reveal a high level of morphological and kinematical complexity, and allow us to demonstrate associations, at arcsecond precision, of the class I maser emission with outflows, expanding HII regions, dark clouds, shocks traced by the 4.5-micron emission and 8.0-micron filaments. More than 700 maser component features were found at each of the two methanol transitions, but with only 23 per cent recognisable at…
