Stellar mass and specific angular momentum are two properties of a galaxy that are directly related to its formation history, and hence morphology. In this work, the tight planar relationship between stellar specific angular momentum (j*), mass (M*) and mean effective surface brightness (mu_eff) that was recently constrained using ALFALFA galaxies is measured more accurately using galaxies from the Simba cosmological simulation. The distribution of 179 Simba galaxies in log(j*)-log(M*)-mu_eff space is shown to be very tightly planar with j* proportional to M*^0.694 and the distribution of perpendicular distances between the galaxies and the plane being approximately Gaussian with rms=0.057 dex. The parameterised distribution is used with existing j* and mu_eff measurements of 3607 ALFALFA galaxies and 84 SPARC galaxies to reliably predict their published stellar masses to within ~0.1 to 0.2 dex over several decades of stellar mass. Thus, this work presents a new method of easily generating accurate galaxy stellar mass estimates for late-type galaxies and provides a new measurement of the fundamental link between galaxy morphology, mass and angular momentum.
We examine the evolution of intragroup gas X-ray scaling relations for group-sized halos ($M_{500}=10^{12.3-15}M_{\odot}$) in the Simba galaxy formation simulation. X-ray luminosity $L_X$ vs $M_{500}$ shows increasing deviation from self-similarity from $z=3\to 0$, with $M_{500}<10^{13.5} M_{\odot}$ halos exhibiting a large reduction in $L_X$ and slight increase in X-ray luminosity-weighted temperature $T_X$. These shifts are driven by a strong drop in $f_{\rm gas}$ with time for these halos, and coincides with the onset of black hole jet feedback in these systems at $z\sim 1.5$ in Simba. The …
On the scale of dwarf galaxies, several tensions between observations and the theory of structure formation have been identified in the Local Group of galaxies. One of them, the plane-of-satellite problem describes the distribution and motion of dwarf galaxies around their hosts being planar and co-moving. To extend these studies, we have surveyed the nearby Centaurus group and found again evidence for co-rotation within a planar structure of dwarf galaxies, posing a challenge to the current LambdaCDM paradigm. To further study the distribution of satellite systems around other galaxy groups, …
We have conducted a study of extra-planar diffuse ionized gas using the first year data from the MaNGA IFU survey. We have stacked spectra from 49 edge-on, late-type galaxies as a function of distance from the midplane of the galaxy. With this technique we can detect the bright emission lines Halpha, Hbeta, [OII]3726, 3729, [OIII]5007, [NII]6549, 6584, and [SII]6717, 6731 out to about 4 kpc above the midplane. With 16 galaxies we can extend this analysis out to about 9 kpc, i.e. a distance of ~2R_e, vertically from the midplane. In the halo, the surface brightnesses of the [OII] and Halpha emi…
Superthin galaxies (STs) are edge-on disc galaxies with strikingly high planar-to-vertical axes ratios of $\sim 10 - 20$ with no bulge component, and central surface brightness in $B$-band $>$ 23 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ comparable to low surface brightness galaxies (LSBs). Although STs and LSBs have similar dynamical, stellar and atomic hydrogen (HI) masses on an average, it is tricky to conclude if they constitute the same galaxy population, given the edge-on and face-on orientations of the STs and the LSBs respectively. We systematically study star formation rate (SFR) in a sample of STs and LSBs …
Superthin galaxies are low surface brightness (LSB) bulgeless disc galaxies having stellar discs with unusually high planar-to-vertical axes ratio $b/a$ $>$ 10 - 20, the formation and evolution of which is not well-understood. We calculate the specific angular momenta of a sample of six superthins and nine other bulgeless LSBs using stellar photometry, atomic hydrogen (HI) surface density and high resolution HI rotation curves available in the literature. We find that the stellar specific angular mometum $j_{\rm{s}}$, and hence the stellar disc size given by the exponential stellar disc scale …
We conducted an extensive CCD search for faint, unresolved dwarf galaxies of very low surface brightness in the whole Centaurus group region encompassing the Cen A and M 83 subgroups lying at a distance of roughly 4 and 5 Mpc, respectively. The aim is to significantly increase the sample of known Centaurus group members down to a fainter level of completeness, serving as a basis for future studies of the 3D structure of the group. Following our previous survey of 60 square degrees covering the M 83 subgroup, we extended and completed our survey of the Centaurus group region by imaging another …
The existence of galaxies with a surface brightness $μ$ lower than the night sky has been known since three decades. Yet, their formation mechanism and emergence within a $\rmΛCDM$ universe has remained largely undetermined. For the first time, we investigated the origin of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies with M$_{\star}$$\sim$10$^{9.5-10}$M$_{\odot}$, which we are able to reproduce within hydrodynamical cosmological simulations from the NIHAO suite. The simulated and observed LSBs share similar properties, having large HI reservoir, extended star formation histories and effective radii,…
Superthin galaxies are low surface brightness disc galaxies, characterised by optical discs with strikingly high values of planar-to-vertical axes ratios ($>$ 10), the physical origin and evolution of which continue to be a puzzle. We present mass models for three superthin galaxies: IC5249, UGC7321 and IC2233. We use high resolution rotation curves and gas surface density distributions obtained from HI 21 cm radio-synthesis observations, in combination with their two-dimensional structural surface brightness decompositions at Spitzer 3.6 $μ$m band, all of which were available in the literatur…
We present deep HI imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4414, taken as part of the Westerbork HALOGAS (Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS) survey. The observations show that NGC 4414 can be characterized by a regularly rotating inner HI disk, and a more disturbed outer disk. Modeling of the kinematics shows that the outer disk is best described by a U-shaped warp. Deep optical imaging also reveals the presence of a low surface brightness stellar shell, indicating a minor interaction with a dwarf galaxy at some stage in the past. Modeling of the inner disk suggests that about 4 percent of …
The low surface brightness visible wavelength Universe below 29 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ is teeming with unexplored astrophysical phenomena. Structures fainter than this surface brightness are extremely difficult to image due to systematic errors of sky subtraction and scattered light in the atmosphere and in the telescope. In Chapter 1, I show how The Dragonfly Telephoto Array (Dragonfly for short) addresses these systematics via a combination of hardware and software and is able to image at a level of 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ or fainter. In Chapter 2, I describe the Dragonfly Pipeline and how it is opt…
Superthin galaxies are a class of bulgeless, low surface brightness galaxies with strikingly high values of planar-to-vertical axes ratio $\rm(b/a> 10 - 20)$, possibly indicating the presence of an ultra-cold stellar disc. Using the multi-component galactic disc model of gravitationally-coupled stars and gas in the force field of the dark matter halo as well as the stellar dynamical code AGAMA (Action-based Galaxy Modelling Architecture), we determine the vertical velocity dispersion of stars and gas as a function of galacto-centric radius for five superthin galaxies (UGC 7321, IC 5249, FGC 15…
The fine details of the large-scale structure in the local universe provide important empirical benchmarks for testing cosmological models of structure formation. Dwarf galaxies are key object for such studies. Enlarge the sample of known dwarf galaxies in the local universe. We performed a search for faint, unresolved low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the M101 group complex, including the region around the major spiral galaxies M101, M51, and M63 lying at a distance 7.0, 8.6, and 9.0 Mpc, respectively. The new dwarf galaxy sample can be used in a first step to test for significant subs…
We study the synchrotron radio emission from extra-planar regions of star forming galaxies. We use ideal magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of a rotating Milky Way-type disk galaxy with distributed star formation sites for three star formation rates (SFRs) (0.3, 3, 30 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). From our simulations, we see emergence of galactic-scale magnetised outflows, carrying gas from the disk. We compare the morphology of the outflowing gas with hydrodynamic (HD) simulations. We look at the spatial distribution of magnetic field in the outflows. Assuming that a certain fraction of gas …
We study the spatially resolved excitation properties of the ionised gas in a sample of 646 galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data from SDSS-IV MaNGA. Making use of Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich diagnostic diagrams we demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of extended (kpc scale) low ionisation emission-line regions (LIERs) in both star forming and quiescent galaxies. In star forming galaxies LIER emission can be associated with diffuse ionised gas, most evident as extra-planar emission in edge-on systems. In addition, we identify two main classes of galaxies displaying LIER emission: `centr…
We present a numerical study of the interactions between the elongated AGN outflows representing an evolved, narrow-angle tail (NAT) radio galaxy and planar, transverse ICM shock fronts characteristic of those induced by galaxy cluster mergers (incident Mach numbers 2 - 4). The simulated NAT formation was reported previously in \cite{on19a}. Our simulations utilize a three-dimensional, Eulerian magnetohydrodynamic code along with energy-dependent Eulerian transport of passive cosmic ray electrons. Our analysis of the shock/NAT interaction applies a Riemann problem-based theoretical model to in…
Outskirts of large galaxies contain important information about the galaxy formation and assembly process, and resolved star count studies can probe the extremely low surface brightness of the outer halos. We use images obtained with the VISTA telescope to construct spatially resolved J vs Z-J colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of NGC 253, a nearly edge-on disk galaxy in the Sculptor group. The very deep photometry, down to J ~ 23.5, and the wide area covered allows us to trace the red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that belong to the outer disk and the halo of NGC 25…
