Dwarf ellipticals are the most common galaxy type in cluster environments, however the challenges associated with their observation mean their formation mechanisms are still poorly understood. To address this, we present deep integral field observations of a sample of 31 low-mass ($10^{7.5} <$ M$_\star < 10^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$) early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster with the SAMI instrument. For 21 galaxies our observations are sufficiently deep to construct spatially resolved maps of the stellar velocity and velocity dispersion - for the remaining galaxies we extract global velocities and dispersions from aperture spectra only. From the kinematic maps we measure the specific stellar angular momentum $λ_R$ of the lowest mass dE galaxies to date. Combining our observations with early-type galaxy data from the literature spanning a large range in stellar mass, we find that $λ_R$ decreases towards lower stellar mass, with a corresponding increase in the proportion of slowly rotating galaxies in this regime. The decrease of $λ_R$ with mass in our sample dE galaxies is consistent with a similar trend seen in somewhat more massive spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey. This suggests that the degree of dynamical heating required to produce dEs from low-mass starforming progenitors may be relatively modest, and consistent with a broad range of formation mechanisms.
We explore the kinematic scaling relations of 38 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster using observations from the SAMI integral field spectrograph. We focus on the Fundamental Plane (FP), defined by the physical properties of the objects (scale length, surface brightness and velocity dispersion) and the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, where surface brightness is replaced by stellar mass, and investigate their dynamical-to-stellar-mass ratio. We confirm earlier results that the Fornax dEs are significantly offset above the FP defined by massive, hot stellar systems. For the Stellar Mass (Fund…
We present a new set of index-based measurements of [$α$/Fe] for a sample of 2093 galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Following earlier work, we fit a global relation between [$α$/Fe] and the galaxy velocity dispersion $σ$ for red sequence galaxies, [$α$/Fe]=(0.378$\pm$0.009)log($σ$/100)+(0.155$\pm$0.003). We observe a correlation between the residuals and the local environmental surface density, whereas no such relation exists for blue cloud galaxies. In the full sample, we find that elliptical galaxies in high-density environments are $α$-enhanced by up to 0.057$\pm$0.014 dex at velocity dis…
The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has morphologically identified a class of "Little Blue Spheroid" (LBS) galaxies whose relationship to other classes of galaxies we now examine in detail. Considering a sample of 868 LBSs, we find that such galaxies display similar but not identical colours, specific star formation rates, stellar population ages, mass-to-light ratios, and metallicities to Sd-Irr galaxies. We also find that LBSs typically occupy environments of even lower density than those of Sd-Irr galaxies, where ~65% of LBS galaxies live in isolation. Using deep, high-resolution ima…
This paper presents Gemini-$gri'$ high quality photometry for cluster candidates in the field of NGC 1316 (Fornax A) as part of a study that also includes GMOS spectroscopy. A preliminary discussion of the photometric data indicates the presence of four stellar cluster populations with distinctive features in terms of age, chemical abundance and spatial distribution. Two of them seem to be the usually old (metal poor and metal rich) populations typically found in elliptical galaxies. In turn, an intermediate-age (5 Gyr) globular cluster population is the dominant component of the sample (as re…
The Suzaku X-ray satellite observed the nearby S0 galaxy NGC 1316, a merger remnant aged 3 Gyr. The total good exposure time was 48.7 ksec. The spectra were well represented by a two-temperature thermal model for the interstellar medium (ISM) plus a power-law model. The cool and hot temperatures of the thermal model were 0.48 +/- 0.03 and 0.92 +/- 0.04 keV, respectively. The excellent spectral sensitivity of Suzaku enables for the first time to measure the metal abundances of O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe in the ISM. The resultant abundance pattern of O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe is close to that of the new …
Misalignment of gas and stellar rotation in galaxies can give clues to the origin and processing of accreted gas. Integral field spectroscopic observations of 1213 galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey show that 11% of galaxies with fitted gas and stellar rotation are misaligned by more than 30 degrees in both field/group and cluster environments. Using SAMI morphological classifications and Sersic indices, the misalignment fraction is 45+/-6% in early-type galaxies, but only 5+/-1% in late-type galaxies. The distribution of position angle offsets is used to test the physical drivers of this di…
We study the behaviour of the spin-ellipticity radial tracks for 507 galaxies from the Sydney AAO Multi-object Integral Field (SAMI) Galaxy Survey with stellar kinematics out to $\geq1.5R_\text{e}$. We advocate for a morpho-dynamical classification of galaxies, relying on spatially-resolved photometric and kinematic data. We find the use of spin-ellipticity radial tracks is valuable in identifying substructures within a galaxy, including embedded and counter-rotating discs, that are easily missed in unilateral studies of the photometry alone. Conversely, bars are rarely apparent in the stellar…
We present a comprehensive and detailed study of the stellar populations of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We analyse their spatial distributions along the main body of the galaxy, obtaining their surface density maps, together with their radial density profiles. Results are based on the largest and most complete catalogue of stars in Fornax, with more than $3.5\times10^{5}$ stars covering the main body of the galaxy up to $V \sim 24$. We find a differentiated structure in Fornax depending on the stellar ages. Old stars ($\gtrsim 10$ Gyr) follow an elliptical distribution well fitted by K…
It has been proposed that S0 galaxies are either fading spirals or the result of galaxy mergers. The relative contribution of each pathway, and the environments in which they occur remains unknown. Here we investigate stellar and gas kinematics of 219 S0s in the SAMI Survey to look for signs of multiple formation pathways occurring across the full range of environments. We identify a large range of rotational support in their stellar kinematics, which correspond to ranges in their physical structure. We find that pressure-supported S0s with $v/σ$ below 0.5 tend to be more compact and feature m…
We combine data from ALMA and MUSE to study the resolved (~300 pc scale) star formation relation (star formation rate vs. molecular gas surface density) in cluster galaxies. Our sample consists of 9 Fornax cluster galaxies, including spirals, ellipticals, and dwarfs, covering a stellar mass range of ~10^8.8 - 10^11 M_Sun. CO(1-0) and extinction corrected Halpha were used as tracers for the molecular gas mass and star formation rate, respectively. We compare our results with Kennicutt (1998) and Bigiel et al. (2008). Furthermore, we create depletion time maps to reveal small-scale variations in…
We conduct a $^{12}$C$^{16}$O($J$=1-0) (hereafter CO) mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the ALMA Morita array in cycle 5. CO emission is detected from 23 out of the 64 galaxies. Our sample includes dwarf, spiral and elliptical galaxies with stellar masses of $M_{\rm star}\sim10^{6.3-11.6}$~M$_\odot$. The achieved beam size and sensitivity are $15''\times8''$ and $\sim12$~mJy~beam$^{-1}$ at the velocity resolution of $\sim10$~km~s$^{-1}$, respectively. We study the cold-gas (molecular- and atomic-gas) properties of 38 subsamples with $M_{\rm star}>10^9$~M$_\odot$ combine…
Based on archival {\it Chandra} observations with a total exposure of 1.3 Ms, we study X-ray point sources in the Fornax cluster of galaxies, with the primary aim of searching for intra-cluster X-ray source populations. We detect 1177 point sources out to a projected radius of $\sim$30 arcmin ($\sim$180 kpc) from the cluster center and down to a limiting 0.5--8 keV luminosity of $\sim3\times10^{37}{\rm~erg~s^{-1}}$. We construct source surface density profile, after excluding sources associated with foreground stars, known globular clusters, ultra-compact dwarfs and galactic nuclei. From this …
We derive the recent growth history of the Fornax Cluster, in particular the recent infall of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1404. We show, using a simple cluster minor merger simulation tailored to Fornax and NGC 1404, that a second or more likely third encounter between the two reproduces all main merger features observed in both objects; we firmly exclude a first infall scenario. Our simulations reveal a consistent picture: NGC 1404 passed by NGC 1399 about 1.1 - 1.3 Gyrs ago from the NE to the SW and is now almost at the point of its next encounter from the S. This scenario explains the s…
We perform a detailed study of the stellar populations in a sample of massive Fornax dwarf galaxies using a set of newly defined line indices. Using data from the Integral field spectroscopic data, we study abundance ratios of eight dEs with stellar mass ranging from 10$^8$ to 10$^{9.5}$ M$_\odot$ in the Fornax cluster. We present the definitions of a new set of high-resolution Lick-style indices to be used for stellar population studies of unresolved small stellar systems. We identify 23 absorption features and continuum regions, mainly dominated by 12 elements (Na, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe,…
Deep observations of the dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxy NGC 1396 (M$_V = -16.60$, Mass $\sim 4\times10^8$ M$_\odot$), located in the Fornax cluster, have been performed with the VLT/ MUSE spectrograph in the wavelength region from $4750-9350$ Å. In this paper we present a stellar population analysis studying chemical abundances, the star formation history (SFH) and the stellar initial mass function (IMF) as a function of galacto-centric distance. Different, independent ways to analyse the stellar populations result in a luminosity-weighted age of $\sim$ 6 Gyr and a metallicity [Fe/H]$\sim$ $-0.4…
We present the first results of the ALMA Fornax Cluster Survey (AlFoCS): a complete ALMA survey of all members of the Fornax galaxy cluster that were detected in HI or in the far infrared with Herschel. The sample consists of a wide variety of galaxy types, ranging from giant ellipticals to spiral galaxies and dwarfs, located in all (projected) areas of the cluster. It spans a mass range of 10^(~8.5 - 11) M_Sun. The CO(1-0) line was targeted as a tracer for the cold molecular gas, along with the associated 3 mm continuum. CO was detected in 15 of the 30 galaxies observed. All 8 detected galaxi…
We present deep photometry in the B,V and I filters from CTIO/MOSAIC for about 270.000 stars in the Fornax dwarf Spheroidal galaxy, out to a radius of r_ell\sim0.8 degrees. By combining the accurately calibrated photometry with the spectroscopic metallicity distributions of individual Red Giant Branch stars we obtain the detailed star formation and chemical evolution history of Fornax. Fornax is dominated by intermediate age (1-10 Gyr) stellar populations, but also includes ancient (10-14 Gyr), and young (<1 Gyr) stars. We show that Fornax displays a radial age gradient, with younger, more met…
We determine abundance ratios of 37 dwarf ellipticals (dEs) in the nearby Virgo cluster. This sample is representative of the early-type population of galaxies in the absolute magnitude range -19.0 < Mr < -16.0. We analyze their absorption line-strength indices by means of index-index diagrams and scaling relations and use the stellar population models to interpret them. We present ages, metallicities and abundance ratios obtained from these dEs within an aperture size of Re/8. We calculate [Na/Fe] from NaD, [Ca/Fe] from Ca4227 and [Mg/Fe] from Mgb. We find that [Na/Fe] is under-abundant with …
Most radio galaxies are hosted by giant gas-poor ellipticals, but some contain significant amounts of dust, which is likely to be of external origin. In order to characterize the mid-IR properties of two of the most nearby and brightest merger-remnant radio galaxies of the Southern hemisphere, NGC 1316 (Fornax A) and NGC 612 (PKS 0131-36), we used observations with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) at wavelengths of 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 micron and Spitzer mid-infrared spectra. By applying a resolution-enhancement technique, new WISE images were produced at angular resolutions rangi…
We present the unexpected discovery of four ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a group environment. We recently identified seven extremely low surface brightness galaxies in the vicinity of the spiral galaxy M101, using data from the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. The galaxies have effective radii of $10"-38"$ and central surface brightnesses of $25.6-27.7$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in g-band. We subsequently obtained follow-up observations with $HST$ to constrain the distances to these galaxies. Four remain persistently unresolved even with the spatial resolution of $HST$/ACS, which implies distances of $D…
We present the results of a Keck-ESI spectroscopic study of six dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Perseus Cluster core, and confirm two dwarfs as cluster members for the first time. All six dEs follow the size-magnitude relation for dE/dSph galaxies. Central velocity dispersions are measured for three Perseus dwarfs in our sample, and all lie on the $σ$-luminosity relation for early-type, pressure supported systems. We furthermore examine SA 0426-002, a unique dE in our sample with a bar-like morphology surrounded by low-surface brightness wings/lobes ($μ_{B} = 27$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Give…
The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 is the brightest galaxy in the Fornax cluster, and displays a number of morphological features that might be interpreted as an intermediate age merger remanent ($\sim$3 Gyr). Based on the idea that globular clusters systems (GCS) constitute genuine tracers of the formation and evolution of their host galaxies, we conducted a spectroscopic study of approximately 40 globular clusters (GCs) candidates associated with this interesting galaxy. We determined ages, metallicities, and $α$-element abundances for each GC present in the sample, through the measurement…
(Abridged) We use the largest set of globular cluster velocities obtained so far of any elliptical galaxy to revise and extend the previous investigations of the dynamics of NGC 1399, the central dominant galaxy of the nearby Fornax cluster of galaxies. Our sample now comprises velocities for almost 700 GCs with projected galactocentric radii between 6 and 100 kpc. In addition, we use velocities published by Bergond et al. (2007). We study the kinematics of the metal-poor and metal-rich subpopulations and perform spherical Jeans modelling. The most important results are: The metal-rich (red) G…
A Comparison of Full Spectral Fitting Codes for Measuring the Stellar Initial Mass Function and Other Stellar Population Properties in Elliptical Galaxies
Hot atmospheres pervading galaxy clusters, groups, and early-type galaxies are rich in metals, produced during epochs and diffused via processes that are still to be determined. While this enrichment has been routinely investigated in clusters, metals in lower mass systems are more challenging to probe with standard X-ray exposures and spectroscopy. In this paper, we focus on very deep XMM-Newton ($\sim$350 ks) observations of NGC 1404, a massive elliptical galaxy experiencing ram-pressure stripping of its hot atmosphere while infalling toward the centre of the Fornax cluster, with the aim to …
We present the first large-scale study of the photometric and structural relations followed by early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the Antlia cluster. Antlia is the third nearest populous galaxy cluster after Fornax and Virgo (d $\sim 35$ Mpc). A photographic catalog of its galaxy content was built by Ferguson & Sandage in 1990 (FS90). Afterwards, we performed further analysis of the ETG population located at the cluster centre. Now, we extend our study covering an area four times larger, calculating new total magnitudes and colours, instead of isophotal photometry, as well as structural parameters …
The Fornax Cluster is the nearest galaxy cluster in the southern sky. NGC 1404 is a bright elliptical galaxy falling through the intracluster medium of the Fornax Cluster. The sharp leading edge of NGC 1404 forms a classical "cold front" that separates 0.6 keV dense interstellar medium and 1.5 keV diffuse intracluster medium. We measure the angular pressure variation along the cold front using a very deep (670\,ksec) {\sl Chandra} X-ray observation. We are taking the classical approach -- using stagnation pressure to determine a substructure's speed -- to the next level by not only deriving a …
We consider the hypothesis that galactic dark matter is composed of ultra-light scalar particles and use internal properties of dwarf spheroidal galaxies to establish a preferred range for the mass m of these bosonic particles. We re-investigate the problem of the longevity of the cold clump in Ursa Minor and the problem of the rapid orbital decay of the globular clusters in Fornax and dwarf ellipticals. Treating the scalar field halo as a rigid background gravitational potential and using N-body simulations, we have explored how the dissolution timescale of the cold clump in Ursa Minor depend…
We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous comparison of optical and near-infrared dispersions. Our magnitude-limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster comprises 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies more luminous than MB = -17. We were able to determine the central dispersions based on the near-infrared CO absorption band head for 19 of those galaxies. The velocity dispersions range from less than 70 km/s to over 400 km/s. We compare our near-infrared velocity dispersions to the optical dispersions measured by Kuntschner (2000). Contrary to previous studies, we find a …
We discuss how the removal of interstellar dust by radiation pressure of stars influences the chemical evolution of galaxies by using a new one-zone chemical evolution models with dust wind. The removal efficiency of an element (e.g., Fe, Mg, and Ca) through radiation-driven dust wind in a galaxy is assumed to depend both on the dust depletion level of the element in interstellar medium and the total luminosity of the galaxy in the new model. We particularly focus on the time evolution of [alpha/Fe] and its dependence on model parameters for dust wind in this study. The principal results are a…
We study the population of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a set of eight nearby ($z <$ 0.035) galaxy clusters, from the Kapteyn IAC WEAVE INT Clusters Survey ($\texttt{KIWICS}$). We report the discovery of 442 UDG candidates in our eight field of views, with 247 of these galaxies lying at projected distances < 1 R$_{200}$ from their host cluster. With the aim of testing theories about their formation, we study the scaling relations of UDGs comparing with different types of galaxies, finding that in the full parameter space they behave as dwarf galaxies and their colors do not seem to correla…
We present spatially resolved measurements of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in NGC 1399, the largest elliptical galaxy in the Fornax Cluster. Using data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) and updated state-of-the-art stellar population synthesis models from Conroy et. al 2018, we use full spectral fitting to measure the low-mass IMF, as well as a number of individual elemental abundances, as a function of radius in this object. We find that the IMF in NGC 1399 is heavier than the Milky Way in its centre and remains radially constant at a super-salpeter slope out to 0.7…
Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are massive star clusters found ubiquitously in the centres of galaxies, from the dwarf regime to massive ellipticals and spirals. The fraction of nucleated galaxies is as high as $>$ 90 % at $M_{\text{gal}} \sim 10^9 M_\odot$. However, how NSC formation mechanisms work in different regimes and what determines galaxy nucleation is still unclear. The dissipationless accretion of infalling globular clusters (GCs) and the in situ formation of stars directly at the galactic centre likely operate to grow NSCs in most galaxies; however, their efficiency has been difficul…
We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the low to moderate density environments of the MATLAS (Mass Assembly of early-Type gaLAxies with their fine Structures) deep imaging survey. The sample consists of 2210 dwarfs, including 508 nucleated. We define a nucleus as a compact source that is close to the galaxy photocentre (within 0.5 $R_e$) which is also the brightest such source within the galaxy's effective radius. The morphological analysis is performed using a 2D surface brightness profile modelling on the g-band images of both the galaxies and nuclei. Our study rev…
Context: The Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies, located at low latitudes in the direction of the Galactic bulge, has been relatively poorly studied in comparison with other rich galaxy clusters like Coma, Virgo and Fornax, in spite of being the 2nd brightest X-ray cluster in the sky. Methods: Deep near-infrared images and photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea eXtended survey (VVVX) were used to detect galaxy member candidates of Ophiuchus cluster up to 2 Mpc from the cD galaxy 2MASX J17122774-2322108 using the Galdeano et al. criteria to select the galaxies among the foreground sou…
We present a novel approach to constrain the formation channels of Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies (UCDs). This inhomogeneous class of objects of remnants of tidally stripped dwarf elliptical galaxies and high mass globular clusters. We use three methods to unravel their nature: 1) we analysed their surface brightness profiles, 2) we carried out a direct search for tidal features around UCDs and 3) we compared the spatial distribution of GCs and UCDs in the halo of their host galaxy. Based on FORS2 observations, we have studied the detailed structural composition of a large sample of 97 UCDs in t…
The merger remnant NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is one of the most important objects regarding the investigation of merger-related processes. We use kinematical data of globular clusters (GCs) and the diffuse stellar light to investigate the global structure of NGC 1316 and to constrain the dark matter content. We perform multi-object-spectroscopy with VLT/FORS2 and MXU. Out of 562 slits, we extract radial velocities for 177 GCs. Moreover, we measure radial velocities of the integrated galaxy light, using slits with a sufficiently bright "sky". To these data, we add 20 cluster velocities from Goudfrooi…
Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) share many properties with globular clusters (GCs) and are found in similar environments. A large sample of UCDs and GCs around NGC 1399, the central giant elliptical of the Fornax galaxy cluster, is used to infer their formation history and also that of NGC 1399. We assumed that all GCs and UCDs in our sample are star clusters (SCs) and used them as tracers of past star formation activities. After correcting our GC/UCD sample for mass loss, we interpreted their overall mass function to be a superposition of SC populations that formed coevally during differe…
Observations of early-type dwarf galaxies in clusters often show that cluster dwarf members have significantly higher velocities and less symmetric distributions than cluster giant ellipticals, suggesting that these dwarfs are recently accreted galaxies, possibly from an infalling group. We use a series of $N$-body simulations, exploring a parameter space of groups falling into clusters, to study the observed velocity distributions of the infall components along various lines of sight. We show that, as viewed along a line of sight parallel to the group's infall direction, there is a significan…
We present comprehensive observational results of the metallicity effect on the fraction of globular clusters (GC) that contain low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB), by utilizing all available data obtained with Chandra for LMXBs and HST ACS for GCs. Our primary sample consists of old elliptical galaxies selected from the ACS Virgo and Fornax surveys. To improve statistics at both the lowest and highest X-ray luminosity, we also use previously reported results from other galaxies. It is well known that the LMXB fraction is considerably higher in red, metal-rich, than in blue, metal-poor GCs. In this…
The intracluster medium (ICM), as a magnetized and highly ionized fluid, provides an ideal laboratory to study plasma physics under extreme conditions that cannot yet be achieved on Earth. NGC 1404 is a bright elliptical galaxy that is being gas stripped as it falls through the ICM of the Fornax Cluster. We use the new {\sl Chandra} X-ray observations of NGC 1404 to study ICM microphysics. The interstellar medium (ISM) of NGC 1404 is characterized by a sharp leading edge, 8 kpc from the galaxy center, and a short downstream gaseous tail. Contact discontinuities are resolved on unprecedented sp…

We have compared the halo kinematics traced by globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) for two elliptical galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters NGC 1399 and NGC 4649, and for the merger remnant NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). We find differences in the rotational properties of the PN, red GC, and blue GC systems in all these three galaxies. NGC 1399 PNe and GCs show line of sight velocity distributions in specific regions that are significantly different, based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. The PN system shows multi-spin components, with nearly opposite direction of rotation in the inne…
We present a comprehensive high spatial-resolution imaging study of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC1399, the central giant elliptical cD galaxy in the Fornax galaxy cluster, conducted with HST/ACS. Using a novel technique to construct drizzled PSF libraries for HST/ACS data, we accurately determine the fidelity of GC structural parameter measurements from detailed artificial star cluster experiments. The measurement of rh for the major fraction of the NGC1399 GC system reveals a trend of increasing rh versus galactocentric distance, Rgal, out to about 10 kpc and a flat relation beyond. This tre…
