Context: The Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies, located at low latitudes in the direction of the Galactic bulge, has been relatively poorly studied in comparison with other rich galaxy clusters like Coma, Virgo and Fornax, in spite of being the 2nd brightest X-ray cluster in the sky. Methods: Deep near-infrared images and photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea eXtended survey (VVVX) were used to detect galaxy member candidates of Ophiuchus cluster up to 2 Mpc from the cD galaxy 2MASX J17122774-2322108 using the Galdeano et al. criteria to select the galaxies among the foreground sources. We also perform a morphological visual classification, color-magnitude diagram and density profiles. Results: We identified 537 candidate galaxy members of the Ophiuchus cluster up to 2 Mpc from the cD galaxy, increasing 7 times the number of galaxies reported in previous catalogs. In addition, we performed a morphological classification of these galaxy candidates finding that the fraction of Ellipticals reaches more than the 60% in the central region of the cluster. On the other hand the Spirals fraction is lower than the 20% remaining almost constant throughout the cluster. Moreover, we study the red sequence of galaxy member candidates and use mock catalogs to explore the density profile of the cluster, finding that the value derived from the mock catalog towards an overdense region is in agreement with the galaxy excess of the central zone of the Ophiuchus cluster. Conclusions: Our investigation of the hidden population of Ophiuchus galaxies underscores the importance of this cluster as a prime target for future photometric and spectroscopic studies. Moreover the results of this work highlights the potential of VVVX survey to study extragalactic objects in the Zone of Avoidance.
Far-infrared and (sub)millimeter fluxes can be used to study dust in protoplanetary disks, the building blocks of planets. Here, we combine observations from the Herschel Space Observatory with ancillary data of 284 protoplanetary disks in the Taurus, Chamaeleon I, and Ophiuchus star-forming regions, covering from the optical to mm/cm wavelengths. We analyze their spectral indices as a function of wavelength and determine their (sub)millimeter slopes when possible. Most disks display observational evidence of grain growth, in agreement with previous studies. No correlation is found between oth…

The Ophiuchus cluster, at a redshift z=0.0296, is known from X-rays to be one of the most massive nearby clusters, but due to its very low Galactic latitude its optical properties have not been investigated in detail. We discuss the optical properties of the galaxies in the Ophiuchus cluster, in particular with the aim of understanding better its dynamical properties. We have obtained deep optical imaging in several bands with various telescopes, and applied a sophisticated method to model and subtract the contributions of stars in order to measure galaxy magnitudes as accurately as possible. …
As protostars evolve from optically faint / infrared bright (Class I) sources to optically bright / infrared faint (Class II) the solid material in their surrounding disks accumulates into planetesimals and protoplanets. The nearby, young Ophiuchus star-forming region contains hundreds of protostars in a range of evolutionary states. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array to observe their millimeter continuum emission, we have measured masses of, or placed strong upper limits on, the dust content of 279 disks. The masses follow a log-normal distribution with a clear trend of decreasing mass …
Herschel observations of nearby clouds in the Gould Belt support a paradigm for low-mass star formation, starting with the generation of molecular filaments, followed by filament fragmentation, and the concentration of mass into self-gravitating prestellar cores. With the unique far-infrared and submillimeter continuum imaging capabilities of the Herschel Space observatory, the closeby (d = 139 pc) Ophiuchus cloud was mapped at five wavelengths from 70 $μm$ to 500 $μm$ with the aim of providing a complete census of dense cores in this region, including unbound starless cores, bound prestellar …
We have performed a survey for new members of the Ophiuchus cloud complex using high-precision astrometry from the second data release of Gaia, proper motions measured with multi-epoch images from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and color-magnitude diagrams constructed with photometry from various sources. Through spectroscopy of candidates selected with those data, we have identified 155 new young stars. Based on available measurements of kinematics, we classify 102, 47, and six of those stars as members of Ophiuchus, Upper Sco, and other populations in Sco-Cen, respectively. We have also assess…
We present a new assessment of the ability of Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) to form massive stars and clusters. This is done by comparison with an empirical mass-size threshold for massive star formation (MSF). We establish m(r)>870M_sun(r/pc)^1.33 as a novel approximate MSF limit, based on clouds with and without MSF. Many IRDCs, if not most, fall short of this threshold. Without significant evolution, such clouds are unlikely MSF candidates. This provides a first quantitative assessment of the small number of IRDCs evolving towards MSF. IRDCs below this limit might still form stars and cluste…
The mid-infrared provides a unique view of galaxy stellar populations, sensitive to both the integrated light of old, low-mass stars and to individual dusty mass-losing stars. We present results from an extended Spitzer/IRAC survey of M31 with total lengths of 6.6 and 4.4 degrees along the major and minor axes, respectively. The integrated surface brightness profile proves to be surprisingly diffcult to trace in the outskirts of the galaxy, but we can also investigate the disk/halo transition via a star count profile, with careful correction for foreground and background contamination. Our poi…
I present a brief review of some of the most recent and active topics of star formation process in the Milky Way using mid and far infrared observations, and motivated by the research being carried out by our science group using data gathered by the Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes. These topics include bringing together the scaling relationships found in extragalactic systems with that of the local nearby molecular clouds, the synthetic modeling of the Milky Way and estimates of its star formation rate.
We present images taken using the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) with the Gemini Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) in three 2 arcmin$^2$ fields in the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey. These GeMS/GSAOI observations are among the first $\approx 0.1^{''}$ resolution data in the near-infrared spanning extragalactic fields exceeding $1.5^{\prime}$ in size. We use these data to estimate galaxy sizes, obtaining results similar to those from studies with the Hubble Space Telescope, though we find a higher fraction of compact star forming galaxies at $z>2$. To…
Context: Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) harbor progenitors of high-mass stars. Little is known of the parental molecular clouds of the IRDCs. Aims: We demonstrate the feasibility of the near-infrared (NIR) dust extinction mapping in tracing the parental molecular clouds of IRDCs at the distances of D = 2.5 - 8 kpc. Methods: We derive NIR extinction maps for 10 prominent IRDC complexes using a color-excess mapping technique and NIR data from the UKIDSS/Galactic Plane Survey. We compare the resulting maps to the 13CO emission line data, to the 8 μm dust opacity data, and to the millimeter dust emi…
We present far-infrared (FIR) properties of an extremely luminous infrared galaxy (ELIRG) at $z_{\rm spec}$ = 3.703, WISE J101326.25+611220.1 (WISE1013+6112). This ELIRG is selected as an IR-bright dust-obscured galaxy (DOG) based on the photometry from the Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) and wide-field infrared survey explorer (WISE). In order to derive its accurate IR luminosity, we perform follow-up observations at 89 and 154 $μ$m using the high-resolution airborne wideband camera-plus (HAWC+) on board the 2.7-m stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy (SOFIA) telescope. We conduct …
Virial black hole mass ($M_{BH}$) determination directly involves knowing the broad line region (BLR) clouds velocity distribution, their distance from the central supermassive black hole ($R_{BLR}$) and the virial factor ($f$). Understanding whether biases arise in $M_{BH}$ estimation with increasing obscuration is possible only by studying a large (N$>$100) statistical sample of obscuration unbiased (hard) X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the rest-frame near-infrared (0.8-2.5$μ$m) since it penetrates deeper into the BLR than the optical. We present a detailed analysis of 65 loc…
Recent mid-infrared (MIR) interferometric observations showed in few active galactic nuclei (AGN) that the bulk of the infrared emission originates from the polar region above the putative torus, where only little dust should be present. Here, we investigate whether such strong polar dust emission is common in AGN. Out of 149 Seyferts in the MIR atlas of local AGN (Asmus et al.), 21 show extended MIR emission on single dish images. In 18 objects, the extended MIR emission aligns with the system axis position angle, established by [OIII], radio, polarisation and maser based position angle measu…
We report the detection of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) in the mid-infrared (at 24 and 70 μm), in the coordinate ranges 10 < l < 65 deg and 285 < l < 350 deg, |b| < 1 deg, using the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We search for infrared counterparts to SNRs in Green's catalog and identify 39 out of 121, i.e., a detection rate of about 32%. Such a relatively low detection fraction is mainly due to confusion with nearby foreground/background sources and diffuse emission. The SNRs in our sample show a linear trend in [F8/F24] versus [F70/F24]. We comp…
We investigate the evolutionary connection between local IR-bright galaxies ($\log L_{\rm IR}\ge 11.4\,L_\odot$) and quasars. We use high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.3-0.4 arcsec $\sim$ few hundred parsecs) $8-13\,μ$m ground-based spectroscopy to disentangle the AGN mid-IR properties from those of star formation. The comparison between the nuclear $11.3\,μ$m PAH feature emission and that measured with Spitzer/IRS indicates that the star formation is extended over a few kpc in the IR-bright galaxies. The AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity of IR-bright galaxies is lower than in quasars…
Measuring the star-forming properties of AGN hosts is key to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, this topic remains debated, partly due to the difficulties in separating the infrared (i.e. 1--1000 $μ$m) emission into AGN and star-forming components. Taking advantage of archival far-infrared data from Herschel, we present a new set of AGN and galaxy infrared templates, and introduce the spectral energy distribution fitting code IRAGNSEP. Both can be used to measure infrared host galaxy properties, free of AGN contamination. To build these, we used a sample of 100 local…
The advent of high-angular resolution IR and sub-mm interferometry allows for spatially-resolved observations of the parsec-scale environment of active galactic nuclei (AGN), commonly referred to as the "torus." While molecular lines show the presence of large, massive disks, the IR observations appear to be dominated by a strong polar component that has been interpreted as a dusty wind. This paper aims at using characteristics shared by AGN in each of the wavebands and a set of simple physical principles to form a unifying view of these seemingly contradictory observations: Dusty molecular ga…
We present new imaging at 12.81 and 11.7 microns of the central ~40"x30" (~0.7x0.5 kpc) of the starburst galaxy M82. The observations were carried out with the COMICS mid-infrared (mid-IR) imager on the 8.2m Subaru telescope, and are diffraction-limited at an angular resolution of <0".4. The images show extensive diffuse structures, including a 7"-long linear chimney-like feature and another resembling the edges of a ruptured bubble. This is the clearest view to date of the base of the kpc-scale dusty wind known in this galaxy. These structures do not extrapolate to a single central point, imp…
We present an updated mid-infrared (MIR) versus X-ray correlation for the local active galactic nuclei (AGN) population based on the high angular resolution 12 and 18um continuum fluxes from the AGN subarcsecond MIR atlas and 2-10 keV and 14-195 keV data collected from the literature. We isolate a sample of 152 objects with reliable AGN nature and multi-epoch X-ray data and minimal MIR contribution from star formation. Although the sample is not homogeneous or complete, we show that our results are unlikely to be affected by biases. The MIR--X-ray correlation is nearly linear and within a fact…
We present a near-infrared study of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC\,6300, based on subarcsecond images and long slit spectroscopy obtained with Flamingos-2 at Gemini South. We have found that the peak of the nuclear continuum emission in the $K_s$ band and the surrounding nuclear disk are 25\,pc off-center with respect to the center of symmetry of the larger scale circumnuclear disk, suggesting that this black hole is still not fixed in the galaxy potential well. The molecular gas radial velocity curve yields a central black hole upper mass estimation of $M_{SMBH}^{upper}=(6\pm 2) \times 10^{7}\,\Ms…
NGC 4945 harbors one of the nearest active galactic nuclei (AGN), which allows reaching high spatial resolution with the current observational facilities. The Seyfert 2 nucleus is deeply obscured by an edge-on disk with $A_V\sim14$, requiring infrared observations to study circumnuclear structures and the interstellar medium. In this work, we present an imaging and longslit spectroscopic study of the nuclear region with a spatial resolution of 6.5 pc, based on Flamingos-2 (F2) and T-ReCS data taken at the Gemini South observatory. We report sub-arcsecond photometric measurements of the nucleus…
We present the largest currently existing subarcsecond 3-5 $μ$m atlas of 119 local ($z < 0.3$) active galactic nuclei (AGN). This atlas includes AGN of 5 subtypes: 22 are Seyfert 1; 5 are intermediate Seyferts; 46 are Seyfert 2; 26 are LINERs; and 20 are composites/starbursts. Each AGN was observed with VLT ISAAC in the $L$- and/or $M$-bands between 2000 and 2013. We detect at 3$σ$ confidence 92 sources in the $L$-band and 83 sources in the $M$-band. We separate the flux into unresolved nuclear flux and resolved flux through two-Gaussian fitting. We report the nuclear flux, extended flux, appa…
We present the results of the analysis of multiwavelength Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of far-infrared galaxies detected in the AKARI Deep Field-South (ADF--S) Survey. The analysis uses a carefully selected sample of 186 sources detected at the 90 $μ$m AKARI band, identified as galaxies with cross-identification in public catalogues. For sources without known spectroscopic redshifts, we estimate photometric redshifts after a test of two independent methods: one based on using mainly the optical -- mid infrared range, and one based on the whole range of ultraviolet -- far infrared data.…

We present results of an infrared study of the molecular cloud Lynds 1340, forming three groups of low and intermediate-mass stars. Our goals are to identify and characterise the young stellar population of the cloud, study the relationships between the properties of the cloud and the emergent stellar groups, and integrate L1340 into the picture of the star-forming activity of our Galactic environment. We selected candidate young stellar objects from the Spitzer and WISE data bases using various published color criteria, and classified them based on the slope of the spectral energy distributio…
We present the color and flux variability analysis at 3.4 μm (W1-band) and 4.6 μm (W 2-band) of 492 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies using archival data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). In the WISE color-color, (W1 - W2) versus (W2 - W3) diagram, ~58% of the NLSy1 galaxies of our sample lie in the region occupied by the blazar category of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The mean W1 - W2 color of candidate variable NLSy1 galaxies is $0.99 \pm 0.18$ mag. The average amplitude of variability is $0.11 \pm 0.07$ mag in long-term (multi-year) with no difference in variability…
We systematically investigate the near- (NIR) to far-infrared (FIR) photometric properties of a nearly complete sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky ultra hard X-ray (14-195 keV) survey. Out of 606 non-blazar AGN in the Swift/BAT 70-month catalog at high galactic latitude of $|b|>10^{\circ}$, we obtain IR photometric data of 604 objects by cross-matching the AGN positions with catalogs from the WISE, AKARI, IRAS, and Herschel infrared observatories. We find a good correlation between the ultra-hard X-ray and mid-IR (MIR) luminos…
In this paper we present the results of a mid infrared study of G49.5-0.4, or W51A, part of the massive starbirth complex W51. Combining public data from the $Spitzer$ IRAC camera, and Gemini mid infrared camera T-ReCS at 7.73, 9.69, 12.33 and 24.56 \micron, with spatial resolution of $\sim$0.5\arcsec, we have identified the mid infrared counterparts of 8 ultracompact HII regions, showing that two radio sources are deeply embedded in molecular clouds and another is a cloud of ionized gas. From the T-ReCS data we have unveiled the central core of W51 region, revealing massive young stellar cand…
Few normal galaxies have been probed using near-infrared polarimetry, even though it reveals magnetic fields in the cool interstellar medium better than either optical or radio polarimetry. Deep H-band (1.6um) linear imaging polarimetry toward Taurus serendipitously included the galaxy 2MASX J04412715+2433110 with adequate sensitivity and resolution to map polarization across nearly its full extent. The observations revealed the galaxy to be a steeply inclined (~75 deg) disk type with a diameter, encompassing 90% of the Petrosian flux, of 4.2 kpc at a distance of 53 Mpc. Because the sight line…
(abridged)The focus of this work is to study mid-infrared point sources and the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in the low-metallicity (~0.2 solar) giant HII region N66 using the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Spectrograph. We study 14 targeted infrared point sources as well as spectra of the diffuse ISM that is representative of both the photodissociation regions (PDRs) and the HII regions. Among the point source spectra, we spectroscopically confirm that the brightest mid-infrared point source is a massive embedded young stellar object, we detect silicates in emission associated with t…
The Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC1614 hosts a prominent circumnuclear ring of star formation. However, the nature of the dominant emitting mechanism in its central ~100 pc is still under debate. We present sub-arcsecond angular resolution radio, mid-infrared, Pa-alpha, optical, and X-ray observations of NGC1614, aimed at studying in detail both the circumnuclear ring and the nuclear region. The 8.4 GHz continuum emission traced by the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Gemini/T-ReCS 8.7 micron emission, as well as the Pa-alpha line emission, show remarkable morphological similarities within the sta…
Typical galaxies emit about one third of their energy in the infrared. The origin of this emission reprocessed starlight absorbed by interstellar dust grains and reradiated as thermal emission in the infrared. In particularly dusty galaxies, such as starburst galaxies, the fraction of energy emitted in the infrared can be as high as 90%. Dust emission is found to be an excellent tracer of the beginning and end stages of a star's life, where dust is being produced by post-main-sequence stars, subsequently added to the interstellar dust reservoir, and eventually being consumed by star and planet…
We present an analysis of the evolution of circumstellar dust and molecules in the environment of the very late thermal pulse object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's Object) over a $\sim20$-year period, drawing on ground-, airborne- and space-based infrared photometry and spectroscopy. The dust emission, which started in 1997, resembles a blackbody that cooled from $\sim1200$K in 1998 August to $\sim180$K in 2016 July. The dust mass, assuming amorphous carbon, was $\sim5\times10^{-10}$M$_\odot$ in 1998 August, and we estimate that the total dust mass was $\sim2\times10^{-5}$M$_\odot$ by $\sim2016$. The ap…
The massive star forming region W3 was observed with the faint object infrared camera for the SOFIA telescope (FORCAST) as part of the Short Science program. The 6.4, 6.6, 7.7, 19.7, 24.2, 31.5 and 37.1 \um bandpasses were used to observe the emission of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, Very Small Grains and Big Grains. Optical depth and color temperature maps of W3A show that IRS2 has blown a bubble devoid of gas and dust of $\sim$0.05 pc radius. It is embedded in a dusty shell of ionized gas that contributes 40% of the total 24 \um emission of W3A. This dust component is most…
In this chapter of the Protostars and Planets VII, we review the breakthrough progress that has been made in the field of high-resolution, high-contrast optical and near-infrared imaging of planet-forming disks. These advancements include the direct detection of protoplanets embedded in some disks, and derived limits on planetary masses in others. Morphological substructures, including: rings, spirals, arcs, and shadows, are seen in all imaged infrared-bright disks to date, and are ubiquitous across spectral types. These substructures are believed to be the result of disk evolution processes, …
We present a high spatial resolution Chandra X-ray study of two Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs), G034.43+00.24 and G035.39-00.33, which are expected to be in the early phases of star cluster formation. We detect 112 and 209 valid X-ray point sources towards G034.43+00.24 and G035.39-00.33, respectively. We cross-match the X-ray point sources with 2MASS, GLIMPSE and WISE catalogs and find 53% and 59% of the X-ray sources in G034.43+00.24 and in G035.39-00.33 have corresponding infrared counterparts, respectively. These sources are probable members of young massive clusters in formation, and using …
The study of the Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs) in astronomical environments has opened interesting spectroscopic questions on the effect of anharmonicity on the infrared (IR) spectrum of hot polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and related species in isolated conditions. The forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope will unveil unprecedented spatial and spectral details in the AIB spectrum; significant advancement is thus necessary now to model the infrared emission of PAHs, their presumed carriers, with enough detail to exploit the information content of the AIBs. This requires including anh…
