We use the stellar kinematics for $2458$ galaxies from the MaNGA survey to explore dynamical scaling relations between the stellar mass $M_{\star}$ and the total velocity parameter at the effective radius, $R_e$, defined as $S_{K}^{2}=KV_{R_e}^{2}+σ_{\star_e}^{2}$, which combines rotation velocity $V_{R_e}$, and velocity dispersion $σ_{\star_e}$. We confirm that spheroidal and spiral galaxies follow the same $M_{\star}-S_{0.5}$ scaling relation with lower scatter than the $M_{\star}-V_{R_e}$ and $M_{\star}-σ_{\star_e}$ ones. We also explore a more general Universal Fundamental Plane described by the equation $log(Υ_{e}) = log (S_{0.5}^{2}) - log (I_{e}) - log (R_{e}) + C$, which in addition to kinematics, $S_{0.5}$, and effective radius, $R_e$, it includes surface brightness, $I_e$, and dynamical mass-to-light ratio, $Υ_e$. We use sophisticated Schwarzschild dynamical models for a sub-sample of 300 galaxies from the CALIFA survey to calibrate the so called Universal Fundamental Plane. That calibration allows us to propose both: (i) a parametrization to estimate the difficult-to-measure dynamical mass-to-light ratio at the effective radius; and (ii) a new dynamical mass proxy consistent with dynamical models within $0.09\ dex$. We reproduce the relation between the dynamical mass and the stellar mass in the inner regions of galaxies. We use the estimated dynamical mass-to-light ratio from our analysis, $Υ_{e}^{fit}$, to explore the Universal Fundamental Plane with the MaNGA data set. We find that all classes of galaxies, from spheroids to disks, follow this Universal Fundamental Plane with a scatter significantly smaller $(0.05\ dex)$ than the one reported for the $M_{\star}-S_{0.5}$ relation $(0.1\ dex)$, the Fundamental Plane $(\sim 0.09\ dex)$ and comparable with Tully-Fisher studies $(\sim 0.05\ dex)$, but for a wider range of galaxy types.
The metallicity of local galaxies is tightly related not only to stellar mass, i.e. the mass-metallicity relation, but also to the star formation rate (SFR) through the so-called fundamental metallicity relation (FMR); more active galaxies show lower metallicities at fixed mass. Interestingly, high-z galaxies up to z~2.5 follow the same relation defined by SDSS locally. However, different shapes have been proposed for local galaxies, and the existence of a FMR and the role of the SFR has been recently questioned by some authors. In this paper we first discuss the various parametrizations of th…
We compare the CO(1-0) and H$α$ kinematics in 34 nearby galaxies, selected from the ALMaQUEST and EDGE-CALIFA surveys. We use 3-D Barolo, a 3D tilted ring model, to derive the CO and H$α$ rotation curves. Before comparing rotation curves in the 34 nearby galaxies, we found systematics between the MaNGA and the CALIFA data using eight MaNGA-CALIFA overlapping galaxies. We assume the rotation curves based on the MaNGA data are accurate and made the corresponding correction to the CALIFA data. Our result shows that $\sim$56% (19/34) of our galaxies present slower H$α$ rotation curves compared to …
Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies are a rare population of galaxies that host living high-mass stars during their WR phase (i.e. WR stars) and are thus expected to provide interesting constraints on the stellar Initial Mass Function, massive star formation, stellar evolution models, etc. Spatially resolved spectroscopy should in principle provide a more efficient way of identifying WR galaxies than single-fiber surveys of galactic centers such as SDSS-I & II, as WR stars should be more preferentially found in discs. Using IFU data from the ongoing SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, we have performed a thorough sear…
The discovery of the coherence between galaxy rotation and neighbor motion in 1-Mpc scales has been reported recently. Following up the discovery, we investigate whether the neighbors in such dynamical coherence also present galaxy conformity, using the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey (CALIFA) data and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog. We measure the correlation coefficient of g - r colors between the CALIFA galaxies and their neighbors, as a quantitative indicator of galaxy conformity. The neighbors are divided into coherently moving and anti-coherently moving ones, the correla…
Estimating the bar pattern speed (\Om{}) is one of the main challenges faced in understanding the role of stellar bars in galaxy dynamical evolution. This work aims to characterise different uncertainty sources affecting the Tremaine Weinberg (TW)-method to study the correlation between bar and galaxies physical parameters. We use a sample of 15 MaNGA SDSS-IV galaxies and 3 CALIFA galaxies from \cite{Aguerri2015}. We studied the errors related with (i) galaxy centre determination, (ii) disc position angle (PA) emphasising the difficulties triggered by outer non-axisymmetric structures besides …
Deriving circular velocities of galaxies from stellar kinematics can provide an estimate of their total dynamical mass, provided a contribution from the velocity dispersion of the stars is taken into account. Molecular gas (e.g., CO) on the other hand, is a dynamically cold tracer and hence acts as an independent circular velocity estimate without needing such a correction. In this paper we test the underlying assumptions of three commonly used dynamical models, deriving circular velocities from stellar kinematics of 54 galaxies (S0-Sd) that have observations of both stellar kinematics from th…
We analyze radial stellar metallicity and kinematic profiles out to 1Re in 244 CALIFA galaxies ranging from morphological type E to Sd, to study the evolutionary mechanisms of stellar population gradients. We find that linear metallicity gradients exhibit a clear correlation with galaxy morphological type - with early type galaxies showing the steepest gradients. We show that the metallicity gradients simply reflect the local mass-metallicity relation within a galaxy. This suggests that the radial stellar population distribution within a galaxys effective radius is primarily a result of the \e…
We apply the Jeans Axisymmetric Multi-Gaussian Expansion method to the stellar kinematic maps of 40 Sa-Sd EDGE-CALIFA galaxies and derive their circular velocity curves (CVCs). The CVCs are classified using the Dynamical Classification method developed in Kalinova et al. (2015) . We also calculate the observational baryon efficiency, OBE, where $M_*/M_b=M_*/(M_*+M_{HI}+M_{H_2})$ of the galaxies using their stellar mass, total neutral hydrogen mass and total molecular gas from CO luminosities. Slow-rising, Flat and Round-peaked CVC types correspond to specific OBEs, stellar and dark matter (DM)…
Schwarzschild orbit-based dynamical models are widely used to uncover the internal dynamics of early-type galaxies and globular clusters. Here we present for the first time the Schwarzschild models of late-type galaxies: an SBb galaxy NGC 4210 and an S0 galaxy NGC 6278 from the CALIFA survey. The mass profiles within $2\,R_e$ are constrained well with $1σ$ statistical error of $\sim 10\%$. The luminous and dark mass can be disentangled with uncertainties of $\sim 20\%$ and $\sim 50\%$ respectively. From $R_e$ to $2\,R_e$, the dark matter fraction increases from $14\pm10\%$ to $18\pm10\%$ for N…
We used ionized gas and stellar kinematics for 667 spatially resolved galaxies publicly available from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey (CALIFA) 3rd Data Release with the aim of studying kinematic scaling relations as the Tully $\&$ Fisher (TF) relation using rotation velocity, $V_{rot}$, the Faber $\&$ Jackson (FJ) relation using velocity dispersion, $σ$, and also a combination of $V_{rot}$ and $σ$ through the $S_{K}$ parameter defined as $S_{K}^2 = KV_{rot}^2 + σ^2$ with constant $K$. Late-type and early-type galaxies reproduce the TF and FJ relations. Some early-type galaxie…
We present our discovery of observational evidence for the coherence between galaxy rotation and the average line-of-sight motion of neighbors. We use the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data analyzed with the Python CALIFA STARLIGHT Synthesis Organizer (PyCASSO) platform, and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog. After estimating the projected angular momentum vectors of 445 CALIFA galaxies, we build composite maps of their neighbor galaxies on the parameter space of line-of-sight velocity versus projected distance. The composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted …
Variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF) have been invoked to explain the spectroscopic and dynamical properties of early-type galaxies. However, no observations have yet been able to disentangle the physical driver. We analyse here a sample of 24 early-type galaxies drawn from the CALIFA survey, deriving in a homogeneous way their stellar population and kinematic properties. We find that the local IMF is tightly related to the local metallicity, becoming more bottom-heavy towards metal-rich populations. Our result, combined with the galaxy mass-metallicity relation, naturally exp…
I review the insights emerging from recent large kinematic surveys of galaxies at low redshift, with particular reference to the SAMI, CALIFA and MaNGA surveys. These new observations provide a more comprehensive picture of the angular momentum properties of galaxies over wide ranges in mass, morphology and environment in the present-day universe. I focus on the distribution of angular momentum within galaxies of various types and the relationship between mass, morphology and specific angular momentum. I discuss the implications of the new results for models of galaxy assembly.
We present new evidence for eight early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA Survey that show clear rotation around their major photometric axis ("prolate rotation"). These are LSBCF560-04, NGC 0647, NGC 0810, NGC 2484, NGC 4874, NGC 5216, NGC 6173 and NGC 6338. Including NGC 5485, a known case of an ETG with stellar prolate rotation, as well as UGC 10695, a further possible candidate for prolate rotation, we report ten CALIFA galaxies in total that show evidence for such a feature in their stellar kinematics. Prolate rotators correspond to ~9% of the volume-corrected sample of CALIFA ETGs, a …
In this letter we describe how we use stellar dynamics information to constrain the shape of the stellar IMF in a sample of 27 early-type galaxies from the CALIFA survey. We obtain dynamical and stellar mass-to-light ratios, $Υ_\mathrm{dyn}$ and $Υ_{\ast}$, over a homogenous aperture of 0.5~$R_{e}$. We use the constraint $Υ_\mathrm{dyn} \ge Υ_{\ast}$ to test two IMF shapes within the framework of the extended MILES stellar population models. We rule out a single power law IMF shape for 75% of the galaxies in our sample. Conversely, we find that a double power law IMF shape with a varying high-…
In our recent report, observational evidence supports that the rotational direction of a galaxy tends to be coherent with the average motion of its nearby neighbors within 1 Mpc. We extend the investigation to neighbors at farther distances, in order to examine if such dynamical coherence is found even in large scales. The Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog are used. From the composite map of velocity distribution of 'neighbor' galaxies within 15 Mpc from the CALIFA galaxies, the composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted…
We present a comparative study of molecular and ionized gas kinematics in nearby galaxies. These results are based on observations from the EDGE survey, which measured spatially resolved $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) in 126 nearby galaxies. Every galaxy in EDGE has corresponding resolved ionized gas measurements from CALIFA. Using a sub-sample of 17 rotation dominated, star-forming galaxies where precise molecular gas rotation curves could be extracted, we derive CO and H$α$ rotation curves using the same geometric parameters out to $\gtrsim$1 $R_e$. We find that $\sim$75% of our sample galaxies have small…
Understanding how galaxies cease to form stars represents an outstanding challenge for galaxy evolution theories. This process of "star formation quenching" has been related to various causes, including Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, the influence of large-scale dynamics, and the environment in which galaxies live. In this paper, we present the first results from a follow-up of CALIFA survey galaxies with observations of molecular gas obtained with the APEX telescope. Together with EDGE survey CARMA observations, we collect $^{12}$CO observations that cover approximately one effective …
We perform spatially resolved stellar population analysis for a sample of 69 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey, including 48 ellipticals and 21 S0's. We generate and quantitatively characterize profiles of light-weighted mean stellar age and metallicity within $\lesssim 2R_e$, as a function of radius and stellar-mass surface density $μ_*$. We study in detail the dependence of profiles on galaxies' global properties, including velocity dispersion $σ_e$, stellar mass, morphology. ETGs are universally characterized by strong, negative metallicity gradi…
Galaxy formation entails the hierarchical assembly of mass, along with the condensation of baryons and the ensuing, self-regulating star formation. The stars form a collisionless system whose orbit distribution retains dynamical memory that can constrain a galaxy's formation history. The ordered-rotation dominated orbits with near maximum circularity $λ_z \simeq1$ and the random-motion dominated orbits with low circularity $λ_z \simeq0$ are called kinematically cold and kinematically hot, respectively. The fraction of stars on `cold' orbits, compared to the fraction of stars on `hot' orbits, s…
We measure the star formation rate (SFR) per unit gas mass and the star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm gas}$ for total gas, SFE$_{\rm mol}$ for the molecular gas) in 81 nearby galaxies selected from the EDGE-CALIFA survey, using $^{12}$CO(J=1-0) and optical IFU data. For this analysis we stack CO spectra coherently by using the velocities of H$α$ detections to detect fainter CO emission out to galactocentric radii $r_{\rm gal} \sim 1.2 r_{25}$ ($\sim 3 R_{\rm e}$), and include the effects of metallicity and high surface densities in the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion. We determine the scale lengths f…
[Abridged] We present the apparent stellar angular momentum of 300 galaxies across the Hubble sequence, using integral-field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA survey. Adopting the same $λ_\mathrm{R}$ parameter previously used to distinguish between slow and fast rotating early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies, we show that spiral galaxies as expected are almost all fast rotators. Given the extent of our data, we provide relations for $λ_\mathrm{R}$ measured in different apertures, including conversions to long-slit 1D apertures. Our sample displays a wide range of $λ_\mathrm{Re}$ val…
We study a sample of 28 S0 galaxies extracted from the integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) survey CALIFA. We combine an accurate two-dimensional (2D) multi-component photometric decomposition with the IFS kinematic properties of their bulges to understand their formation scenario. Our final sample is representative of S0s with high stellar masses ($M_{star}/M_{sun} > 10^{10}$). They lay mainly on the red sequence and live in relatively isolated environments similar to that of the field and loose groups. We use our 2D photometric decomposition to define the size and photometric properties of the…
The bar pattern speed ($Ω_{\rm b}$) is defined as the rotational frequency of the bar, and it determines the bar dynamics. Several methods have been proposed for measuring $Ω_{\rm b}$. The non-parametric method proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg (1984; TW) and based on stellar kinematics is the most accurate. This method has been applied so far to 17 galaxies, most of them SB0 and SBa types. We have applied the TW method to a new sample of 15 strong and bright barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types from SB0 to SBbc. Combining our analysis with previous studies, we investig…
By applying spectroscopic decomposition methods to a sample of MaNGA early-type galaxies, we separate out spatially and kinematically distinct stellar populations, allowing us to explore the similarities and differences between galaxy bulges and discs, and how they affect the global properties of the galaxy. We find that the components have interesting variations in their stellar populations, and display different kinematics. Bulges tend to be consistently more metal rich than their disc counterparts, and while the ages of both components are comparable, there is an interesting tail of younger…
It has been suggested that the gravitational potential can have a significant role in suppressing the star formation in the nearby galaxies. To establish observational constrains on this scenario, we investigate the connection between the dynamics, through the circular velocity curves (CVCs) as a proxy of the inner gravitational potential, and star formation quenching in 215 non-active galaxies across Hubble sequence from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. Our results show that galaxies with similar CVCs tend to have a certain star-formation quenching pattern. To explor…
We present a galaxy classification system for 238 (E1-Sdm) CALIFA (Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area) galaxies based on the shapes and amplitudes of their circular velocity curves (CVCs). We infer the CVCs from the de-projected surface brightness of the galaxies, after scaling by a constant mass-to-light ratio based on stellar dynamics - solving axisymmetric Jeans equations via fitting the second velocity moment $V_{\mathrm{rms}}=\sqrt{V^2+σ^2}$ of the stellar kinematics. We use principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the CVC shapes to find characteristic features and use a $k$-means…
MaNGA DynPop -- I. Quality-assessed stellar dynamical modelling from integral-field spectroscopy of 10K nearby galaxies: a catalogue of masses, mass-to-light ratios, density profiles and dark matter
We use the statistical power of the MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic galaxy survey to improve the definition of strong line diagnostic boundaries used to classify gas ionization properties in galaxies. We detect line emission from 3.6 million spaxels distributed across 7400 individual galaxies spanning a wide range of stellar masses, star formation rates, and morphological types, and find that the gas-phase velocity dispersion sigma_HAlpha correlates strongly with traditional optical emission line ratios such as [S II]/HAlpha, [N II]/HAlpha, [O I]/HAlpha, and [O III]/HBeta. Spaxels whose lin…
We study how star formation (SF) is quenched in low-redshift disk galaxies with integral-field spectroscopy. We select 131 face-on spiral galaxies with stellar mass greater than $\rm 3\times10^{10}M_\odot$, and with spatially resolved spectrum from MaNGA DR13. We subdivide the sample into four groups based on the offset of their global specific star formation rate (SFR) from the star-forming main sequence and stack the radial profiles of stellar mass and SFR. By comparing the stacked profiles of quiescent and star-forming disk galaxies, we find that the decrease of the global SFR is caused by …
To investigate star-forming activities in early-type galaxies, we select a sample of 52 star-forming S0 galaxies (SFS0s) from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We find that SFS0s have smaller stellar mass compared to normal S0s in MaNGA. After matching the stellar mass to select the control sample, we find that the mean Sérsic index of SFS0s' bulges (1.76$\pm$0.21) is significantly smaller than that of the control sample (2.57$\pm$0.20), suggesting the existence of a pseudo bulge in SFS0s. After introducing the environmental information, SFS0s show smaller spin parameters in the field than in groups, …
MaNGA DynPop -- II. Global stellar population, gradients, and star-formation histories from integral-field spectroscopy of 10K galaxies: link with galaxy rotation, shape, and total-density gradients
该研究利用 MaNGA DR17 约一万个星系的积分场光谱,分析恒星族群、径向梯度与恒星形成历史,并揭示其与旋转、速度弥散、密度结构及暗物质比例的联系。
Exploiting the relative proximity of the nearby strong-lens galaxy SNL-1, we present a critical comparison of the mass estimates derived from independent modelling techniques. We fit triaxial orbit-superposition dynamical models to spatially-resolved stellar kinematics, and compare to the constraints derived from lens modelling of high-resolution photometry. From the dynamical model, we measure the total (dynamical) mass enclosed within a projected aperture of radius the Einstein radius to be $\log_{10} M_{\mathrm{Ein.}} = 11.00 \pm 0.02$, which agrees with previous measurements from lens mode…
Galaxy formation and evolution simulations are essential tools to probe poorly known astrophysics processes, but particular care is needed to compare simulations with galaxy observations, as observed data need to be modelled as well. We present a method to generate mock galaxies from the hydro-dynamical IllustrisTNG simulations which are suited to compare with integral field spectroscopic observation of galaxies from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. Firstly, we include the same instrumental effects and procedures as adopted in the acquisition and analysis of real data. Furthermore, we generate the ga…
Pressure supported systems modeled under MONDian extended gravity are expected to show an outer flattening in their velocity dispersion profiles. A characteristic scaling between the amplitude of the asymptotic velocity dispersion and the radius at which the flattening occurs is also expected. By comprehensively analyzing the dynamical behavior of $\sim$300 extremely low rotating elliptical galaxies from the MaNGA survey, we show this type of pressure supported systems to be consistent with MONDian expectations, for a range of central velocity dispersion values of $60 km/s < σ_{central}< 280 k…
MaNGA DynPop -- IV. Stacked total density profile of galaxy groups and clusters from combining dynamical models of integral-field stellar kinematics and galaxy-galaxy lensing
In this Letter, we investigate how galaxy mass assembly mode depends on stellar mass $M_{\ast}$, using a large sample of $\sim$10, 000 low redshift galaxies. Our galaxy sample is selected to have SDSS $R_{90}>5\arcsec.0$, which allows the measures of both the integrated and the central NUV$-r$ color indices. We find that: in the $M_{\ast}-($ NUV$-r$) green valley, the $M_{\ast}<10^{10}~M_{\sun}$ galaxies mostly have positive or flat color gradients, while most of the $M_{\ast}>10^{10.5}~M_{\sun}$ galaxies have negative color gradients. When their central $D_{n}4000$ index values exceed 1.6, th…
