We use $\diamondsuit$ to construct, for every $α\leqω_1$ a sequential countably compact topological group of sequential order $α$. This establishes the independence of the existence of sequential countably compact non Fréchet groups from the usual axioms of ZFC and answers several questions of D.~Shakhmatov.
In this paper we consider the problem of characterization of topological spaces that embed into countably compact Hausdorff spaces. We study the separation axioms of subspaces of countably compact Hausdorff spaces and construct an example of a regular separable scattered topological space which cannot be embedded into an Urysohn countably compact topological space but embeds into a Hausdorff countably compact space.
We show that if $κ\leq ω$ and there exists a group topology without non-trivial convergent sequences on an Abelian group $H$ such that $H^n$ is countably compact for each $n<κ$ then there exists a topological group $G$ such that $G^n$ is countably compact for each $n <κ$ and $G^κ$ is not countably compact. If in addition $H$ is torsion, then the result above holds for $κ=ω_1$. Combining with other results in the literature, we show that: $a)$ Assuming ${\mathfrak c}$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, for each $n \in ω$, there exists a group topology on the free Abelian group $G$ such that $…
Under $\mathfrak{p} = \mathfrak{c}$, we answer Question 24 of \cite{dikranjan&shakhmatov3} for cardinality ${\mathfrak c}$ , by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size continuum admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.
The weak Whyburn property is a generalization of the classical sequential property that has been studied by many authors. A space $X$ is weakly Whyburn if for every non-closed set $A \subset X$ there is a subset $B \subset A$ such that $\overline{B} \setminus A$ is a singleton. We prove that every countably compact Urysohn space of cardinality smaller than the continuum is weakly Whyburn and show that, consistently, the Urysohn assumption is essential. We also give conditions for a (countably compact) weak Whyburn space to be pseudoradial and construct a countably compact weakly Whyburn non-ps…
Assuming the existence of $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, we classify the non-torsion Abelian groups of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group topology. We show that for each $κ\in [\mathfrak c, 2^\mathfrak c]$ each of these groups has a countably compact group topology of weight $κ$ without non-trivial convergent sequences and another that has convergent sequences. Assuming the existence of $2^\mathfrak c$ selective ultrafilters, there are at least $2^\mathfrak c$ non homeomorphic such topologies in each case and we also show that every Abelian group…
We prove that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a countably compact Hausdorff group topology on the free Abelian group of size continuum. As a consequence, we show that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a Wallace semigroup (i.e., a countably compact both-sided cancellative topological semigroup which is not a topological group).
We prove that the existence of $\mathfrak{c}$ incomparable selective ultrafilters implies the existence of a Wallace semigroup whose cube is countably compact. In addition, assuming the existence of $2^{\mathfrak c}$ incomparable selective ultrafilters and $2^{< 2^{\mathfrak{c}}} = 2^{\mathfrak{c}}$, we obtain torsion-free topological groups with respect to Comfort's question on the countable compactness of (infinite) powers of a topological group.
A topological space $X$ is said to be {\em $Y$-rigid} if any continuous map $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is constant. In this paper we construct a number of examples of regular countably compact $\mathbb R$-rigid spaces with additional properties like separability and first countability. This way we answer several questions of Tzannes, Banakh, Ravsky, as well as get a consistent example of $\mathbb R$-rigid Nyikos space. Also, we show that it is consistent with ZFC that for every cardinal $κ<\mathfrak c$ there exists a regular separable countably compact space $X$ which is $Y$-rigid with respect to any …
We show that there is a compact topological space carrying a measure which is not a weak* limit of finitely supported measures but is in the sequential closure of the set of such measures. We construct compact spaces with measures of arbitrarily high levels of complexity in this sequential hierarchy. It follows that there is a compact space in which the sequential closure cannot be obtained in countably many steps. However, we show that this is not the case for our spaces where the sequential closure is always obtained in countably many steps.

Given a property $P$ of subspaces of a $T_1$ space $X$, we say that $X$ is {\em $P$-bounded} iff every subspace of $X$ with property $P$ has compact closure in $X$. Here we study $P$-bounded spaces for the properties $P \in \{ωD, ωN, C_2 \}$ where $ωD \, \equiv$ "countable discrete", $ωN \, \equiv$ "countable nowhere dense", and $C_2 \,\equiv$ "second countable". Clearly, for each of these $P$-bounded is between countably compact and $ω$-bounded. We give examples in ZFC that separate all these boundedness properties and their appropriate combinations. Consistent separating examples with better…
We obtain a forcing construction that shows that it is consistent that the torsion-free Abelian group $\mathbb{Q}^{(λ)}$ admits a Hausdorff group topology which is also $\mathcal{U}$-compact and contains no non-trivial convergent sequences, where $λ$ is a cardinal whose cofinality is $ω$ and $\mathcal{U}$ is a selective ultrafilter. This answers a question posed in arXiv:1904.05928.
We describe the structure of 0-simple countably compact topological inverse semigroups and the structure of congruence-free countably compact topological inverse semigroups.
In this paper, some features of countably $α$-compact topological spaces are presented and proven. The connection between countably $α$% -compact, Tychonoff, and $α$-Hausdorff spaces is explained. The space is countably $α$-compact space iff every locally finite family of non-empty subsets of such space is finite is demonstrated. The countably $% α$-compact space with weight greater than or equal to $\aleph_0$ is the $α$-continuous image of a closed subspace of the cube $D^{\aleph_0}$ is discussed. The boundedness of $α$-continuous functions mapping $α$% -compact spaces to other spaces is clea…
We construct, in $\mathsf{ZFC}$, a countably compact subgroup of $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ without non-trivial convergent sequences, answering an old problem of van Douwen. As a consequence we also prove the existence of two countably compact groups $\mathbb{G}_{0}$ and $\mathbb{G}_{1}$ such that the product $\mathbb{G}_{0} \times \mathbb{G}_{1}$ is not countably compact, thus answering a classical problem of Comfort.
We show in ZF that: (i) Every subcompact metrizable space is completely metrizable, and every completely metrizable space is countably subcompact. (ii) A metrizable space X=(X,T) is countably compact iff it is countably subcompact relative to T. (iii) For every metric space X=(X,d), X is compact iff it is subcompact relative to T. We also show: (iv) The negation of each of the statements, (a) every countably subcompact metrizable space is completely metrizable, (b) every countably subcompact metrizable space is subcompact, (c) every complete metrizable space is subcompact is relatively consist…
We study algebraic and topological properties of topological semigroups containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup C(p,q). We prove that each topological semigroup S with pseudocompact square contains no dense copy of C(p,q). On the other hand, we construct a (consistent) example of a pseudocompact (countably compact) Tychonov semigroup containing a copy of C(p,q).
We answer the question, raised more than thirty years ago, on whether the power (G raised to the power omega) of a countably compact minimal Abelian group G is minimal, by showing that the negative answer is equivalent to the existence of measurable cardinals.
We prove that if there are $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters then, for every infinite cardinal $κ$ such that $κ^ω=κ$, there exists a group topology on the free Abelian group of cardinality $κ$ without nontrivial convergent sequences and such that every finite power is countably compact. In particular, there are arbitrarily large countably compact groups. This answers a 1992 question of D. Dikranjan and D. Shakhmatov.
We prove that it is consistent with ZFC that no sequential topological groups of intermediate sequential orders exist. This shows that the answer to a 1981 question of P.~Nyikos is independent of the standard axioms of set theory. The model constructed also provides consistent answers to several questions of D.~Shakhmatov, S.~Todorčević and Uzcátegui. In particular, we show that it is consistent with ZFC that every countably compact sequential group is Fréchet-Urysohn.
Nagata conjectured that every $M$-space is homeomorphic to a closed subspace of the product of a countably compact space and a metric space. This conjecture was refuted by Burke and van Douwen, and A. Kato, independently. However, we can show that there is a c.c.c. poset $P$ of size $2^ω$ such that in $V^P$ Nagata's conjecture holds for each first countable regular space from the ground model (i.e. if a first countable regular space $X\in V$ is an $M$-space in $V^P$ then it is homeomorphic to a closed subspace of the product of a countably compact space and a metric space in $V^P$). In fact, w…
In 1990, Comfort asked: is there, for every cardinal number $α\leq 2^{\mathfrak{c}}$, a topological group $G$ such that $G^γ$ is countably compact for all cardinals $γ<α$, but $G^α$ is not countably compact? A similar question can also be asked for countably pracompact groups: for which cardinals $α$ is there a topological group $G$ such that $G^γ$ is countably pracompact for all cardinals $γ< α$, but $G^α$ is not countably pracompact? In this paper we construct such group in the case $α= ω$, assuming the existence of $\mathfrak{c}$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, and in the case $α= κ^{+…
In this paper we search for conditions on a countably compact (pseudo-compact) topological semigroup under which: (i) each maximal subgroup $H(e)$ in $S$ is a (closed) topological subgroup in $S$; (ii) the Clifford part $H(S)$(i.e. the union of all maximal subgroups) of the semigroup $S$ is a closed subset in $S$; (iii) the inversion $\operatorname{inv}\colon H(S)\to H(S)$ is continuous; and (iv) the projection $π\colon H(S)\to E(S)$, $π\colon x\longmapsto xx^{-1}$, onto the subset of idempotents $E(S)$ of $S$, is continuous.
We force a classification of all the Abelian groups of cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group with a non-trivial convergent sequence. In particular, we answer (consistently) Question 24 of Dikranjan and Shakhmatov for cardinality at most $2^{\mathfrak c}$, by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size at most $2^\mathfrak c$ admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.

An $ω_1$-compact space is a space in which every closed discrete subspace is countable. We give various general conditions under which a locally compact, $ω_1$-compact space is $σ$-countably compact, i.e., the union of countably many countably compact spaces. These conditions involve very elementary properties. Many results shown here are independent of the usual (ZFC) axioms of set theory, and the consistency of some may involve large cardinals. For example, it is independent of the ZFC axioms whether every locally compact, $ω_1$-compact space of cardinality $\aleph_1$ is $σ$-countably compac…
In this paper we investigate hereditarily normal topological groups and their subspaces. We prove that every compact subspace of a hereditarily normal topological group is metrizable. To prove this statement we first show that a hereditarily normal topological group with a non-trivial convergent sequence has $G_δ$-diagonal. This implies, in particular, that every countably compact subset of a hereditarily normal topological group with a non-trivial convergent sequence is metrizable. Another corollary is that under the Proper Forcing Axiom, every countably compact subset of a hereditarily norma…
Let $Γ$ be a Polish space and let $K$ be a separable and pointwise compact set of real-valued functions on $Γ$. It is shown that if each function in $K$ has only countably many discontinuities then $C(K)$ may be equipped with a $T_p$-lower semicontinuous and locally uniformly convex norm, equivalent to the supremum norm.
We construct in ZFC a countably compact group without non-trivial convergent sequences of size $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$, answering a question of Bellini, Rodrigues and Tomita. We also construct in ZFC a selectively pseudocompact group which is not countably pracompact, showing that these two properties are not equivalent in the class of topological groups. Using the same technique, we construct a group which has all powers selectively pseudocompact but is not countably pracompact, assuming the existence of a selective ultrafilter.
We investigate the class of continuous images of non-commutative Valdivia compact spaces, in particular its subclass of weakly non-commutative Cor- son countably compact spaces. A key tool is the study of non-commutative Corson countably compact spaces and their stability. The results are the non- commutative version of results by O. Kalenda (2003). Moreover, we present a study of retractional skeletons on Aleksandrov duplicates of ordinal spaces.
We introduce and study a new topology on trees, that we call the countably coarse wedge topology. Such a topology is strictly finer than the coarse wedge topology and it turns every chain complete, rooted tree into a Fréchet--Urysohn, countably compact topological space. We show the rôle of such topology in the theory of weakly Corson and weakly Valdivia compacta. In particular, we give the first example of a compact space $T$ whose every closed subspace is weakly Valdivia, yet $T$ is not weakly Corson. This answers a question due to Ondřej Kalenda.
Let M be the countably infinite metric fan. We show that C_k(M,2) is sequential and contains a closed copy of Arens space S_2. It follows that if X is metrizable but not locally compact, then C_k(X) contains a closed copy of S_2, and hence does not have the property AP. We also show that, for any zero-dimensional Polish space X, C_k(X,2) is sequential if and only if X is either locally compact or the derived set X' is compact. In the case that X is a non-locally compact Polish space whose derived set is compact, we show that all spaces C_k(X, 2) are homeomorphic, having the topology determined…
A product of compact normal spaces is normal; the product of a countably infinite collection of non-trivial spaces is normal if and only if it is countably paracompact and each of its finite sub-products is normal; if all powers of a space X are normal then X is compact: provided in each case that the spaces involved are T1. Here I examine the situation for infinite products not required to be T1 (or regular), extending or generalizing each of these facts. In addition, I prove some related results, give a number of examples, explore some alternative proofs, and close with some speculation rega…
A.V.Arkhangel'skii asked in 1981 if the variety $\mathfrak V$ of topological groups generated by free topological groups on metrizable spaces coincides with the class of all topological groups. We show that if there exists a real-valued measurable cardinal then the variety $\mathfrak V$ is a proper subclass of the class of all topological groups. A topological group $G$ is called $g$-sequential if for any topological group $H$ any sequentially continuous homomorphism $G\to H$ is continuous. We introduce the concept of a $g$-sequential cardinal and prove that a locally compact group is $g$-sequ…
In this article we investigate which compact spaces remain compact under countably closed forcing. We prove that, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, the natural generalizations to $ω_1$-sequences of the selection principle and topological game versions of the Rothberger property are not equivalent, even for compact spaces. We also show that Tall and Usuba's "$\aleph_1$-Borel Conjecture" is equiconsistent with the existence of an inaccessible cardinal.
We consider precompact sequential and Fréchet group topologies and show that some natural constructions of such topologies always result in metrizable groups answering a question of D.~Dikranjan et al. We show that it is consistent that all sequential precompact topologies on countable groups are Fréchet (or even metrizable). For some classes of groups (for example boolean) extra set-theoretic assumptions may be omitted (although in this case such groups do not have to be metrizable). We also build (using $\diamondsuit$) an example of a countably compact Fréchet group that is not $α_3$ and obt…
A compact space $K$ is {\em Valdivia compact} if it can be embedded in a Tikhonov cube $I^A$ in such a way that the intersection $K\capΣ$ is dense in $K$, where $Σ$ is the sigma-product (= the set of points with countably many non-zero coordinates). We show that there exists a compact connected Abelian group of weight $ø_1$ which is not Valdivia compact, and deduce that Valdivia compact spaces are not preserved by open maps.
We equip the product of countably many copies of a compact Abelian group X with the uniform topology, and study some properties of the topological group G thus obtained. In particular, we determine the cardinality of the dual group of G, when X is the circle group: it is precisely 2^c.
A Tychonoff space $X$ is called ({\em sequentially}) {\em Ascoli} if every compact subset (resp. convergent sequence) of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous, where $C_k(X)$ denotes the space of all real-valued continuous functions on $X$ endowed with the compact-open topology. Various properties of (sequentially) Ascoli spaces are studied, and we give several characterizations of sequentially Ascoli spaces. Strengthening a result of Arhangel'skii we show that a hereditary Ascoli space is Fréchet--Urysohn. A locally compact abelian group $G$ with the Bohr topology is sequentially Ascoli iff $G$ is co…
A space $X$ is called {\it selectively pseudocompact} if for each sequence $(U_{n})_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of pairwise disjoint nonempty open subsets of $X$ there is a sequence $(x_{n})_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of points in $X$ such that $cl_X(\{x_n : n < ω\}) \setminus \big(\bigcup_{n < ω}U_n \big) \neq \emptyset$ and $x_{n}\in U_{n}$, for each $n < ω$. Countably compact space spaces are selectively pseudocompact and every selectively pseudocompact space is pseudocompact. We show, under the assumption of $CH$, that for every positive integer $k > 2$ there exists a topological group whose $k$-th power i…
We detect topological semigroups that are topological paragroups, i.e., are isomorphic to a Rees product of a topological group over topological spaces with a continuous sandwich function. We prove that a simple topological semigroup $S$ is a topological paragroup if one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) $S$ is completely simple and the maximal subgroups of $S$ are topological groups, (2) $S$ contains an idempotent and the square $S\times S$ is countably compact or pseudocompact, (3) $S$ is sequentially compact or each power of $S$ is countably compact. The last item generalizes an…
We construct a normal countably tight $T_1$ space $X$ with $t(X_δ) >2^ω$. This is an answer to the question posed by Dow-Juhász-Soukup-Szentmiklóssy-Weiss. We also show that if the continuum is not so large, then the tightness of $G_δ$-modifications of countably tight spaces can be arbitrary large up to the least $ω_1$-strongly compact cardinal.
For a Tychonoff space $X$, we denote by $C_k(X)$ the space of all real-valued continuous functions on X with the compact-open topology. In this paper, we have gave characterization for $C_k(X)$ to satisfy $S_{fin}(S, S)$.
We prove that if $p$ is a selective ultrafilter then ${\mathbb Q}^{(κ)}$ has a $p$-compact group topology without non-trivial convergent sequences, for each infinite cardinal $κ=κ^ω$. In particular, this gives the first arbitrarily large examples of countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences that are torsion-free.
It is well-known that every non-isolated point in a compact Hausdorff space is the accumulation point of a discrete subset. Answering a question raised by Z. Szentmiklossy and the first author, we show that this statement fails for countably compact regular spaces, and even for omega-bounded regular spaces. In fact, there are kappa-bounded counterexamples for every infinite cardinal kappa. The proof makes essential use of the so-called 'strong colorings' that were invented by the second author.
We show that (in ZFC) every infinite set S can be equipped with 2^|S| complete metrics which generate mutually non-homeomorphic scattered order topologies on S. Furthermore, we show that (in ZFC) every uncountable set S can be equipped with 2^|S| mutually non-homeomorphic scattered and compact order topologies. (This would be unprovable in ZFC for countably infinite S.) In both enumeration theorems the cardinality 2^|S| is optimal.
Revisiting and completing a work due to A. I. Baškirov, we construct compact sequential spaces of any sequential order up to and including $ω_1$ as quotient spaces of $βω$ under CH.
In this paper we investigate more characterizations and applications of $δ$-strongly compact cardinals. We show that, for a cardinal $κ$ the following are equivalent: (1) $κ$ is $δ$-strongly compact, (2) For every regular $λ\ge κ$ there is a $δ$-complete uniform ultrafilter over $λ$, and (3) Every product space of $δ$-Lindelöf spaces is $κ$-Lindelöf. We also prove that in the Cohen forcing extension, the least $ω_1$-strongly compact cardinal is a precise upper bound on the tightness of the products of two countably tight spaces.
We introduce a notion of productivity (summability) of sequences in a topological group G, parametrized by a given function f : N --> omega+1. The extreme case when f is the function taking constant value omega is closely related to the TAP property, the weaker version of the well-known property NSS. We prove that TAP property coincides with NSS in locally compact groups, omega-bounded abelian groups and countably compact minimal abelian groups. As an application of our results, we provide a negative answer to [13, Question 11.1].
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
