A compact space $K$ is {\em Valdivia compact} if it can be embedded in a Tikhonov cube $I^A$ in such a way that the intersection $K\capΣ$ is dense in $K$, where $Σ$ is the sigma-product (= the set of points with countably many non-zero coordinates). We show that there exists a compact connected Abelian group of weight $ø_1$ which is not Valdivia compact, and deduce that Valdivia compact spaces are not preserved by open maps.
The aim of this note is to characterize trees, endowed with coarse wedge topology, that have a retractional skeleton. We use this characterization to provide new examples of non-commutative Valdivia compact spaces that are not Valdivia.
We give a new characterization of Valdivia compact spaces: A compact space is Valdivia if and only if it has a dense commutatively monotonically retractable subspace. This result solves Problem 5.12 from \cite{sal-rey}. Besides, we introduce the notion of full $c$-skeleton and prove that a compact space is Corson if and only if it has a full $c$-skeleton.
We present a characterization of Valdivia compact spaces of small weight in terms of path spaces of trees and we use it to obtain (under $\diamondsuit$) a counterexample to a conjecture related to an open problem concerning twisted sums of $C(K)$ spaces.
We study linearly ordered spaces which are Valdivia compact in their order topology. We find an internal characterization of these spaces and we present a counter-example disproving a conjecture posed earlier by the first author. The conjecture asserted that a compact line is Valdivia compact if its weight does not exceed aleph one, every point of uncountable character is isolated from one side and every closed first countable subspace is metrizable. It turns out that the last condition is not sufficient. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture is valid if the closure of the set of poin…
Let R denote the smallest class of compact spaces containing all metric compacta and closed under limits of continuous inverse sequences of retractions. Class R is striclty larger than the class of Valdivia compact spaces. We show that every compact connected Abelian group which is a topological retract of a space from class R is necessarily isomorphic to a product of metric groups. This completes the result of V. Uspenskij and the author, where a compact connected Abelian group outside class R has been described.
We prove a preservation theorem for the class of Valdivia compact spaces, which involves inverse sequences of ``simple'' retractions. Consequently, a compact space of weight $\loe\aleph_1$ is Valdivia compact iff it is the limit of an inverse sequence of metric compacta whose bonding maps are retractions. As a corollary, we show that the class of Valdivia compacta of weight at most $\aleph_1$ is preserved both under retractions and under open 0-dimensional images. Finally, we characterize the class of all Valdivia compacta in the language of category theory, which implies that this class is pr…
We investigate the class of continuous images of non-commutative Valdivia compact spaces, in particular its subclass of weakly non-commutative Cor- son countably compact spaces. A key tool is the study of non-commutative Corson countably compact spaces and their stability. The results are the non- commutative version of results by O. Kalenda (2003). Moreover, we present a study of retractional skeletons on Aleksandrov duplicates of ordinal spaces.
We show that there are no automorphic Banach spaces of the form C(K) with K continuous image of Valdivia compact except the spaces c0(I). Nevertheless, when K is an Eberlein compact of finite height such that C(K) is not isomorphic to c0(I), all isomorphism between subspaces of C(K) of size less than aleph_omega extend to automorphisms of C(K).
We prove that every point-finite family of nonempty functionally open sets in a topological space $X$ has the cardinality at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if $w(X)\leqκ$ for every Valdivia compact space $Y\subseteq C_p(X)$. Correspondingly a Valdivia compact space $Y$ has the weight at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if every point-finite family of nonempty open sets in $C_p(Y)$ has the cardinality at most $κ$, that is $p(C_p(Y))\leq κ$. Besides, it was proved that $w(Y)=p(C_p(Y))$ for every linearly ordered compact $Y$. In particular, a Valdivia compact space or linearly…
We study compact spaces which are obtained from metric compacta by iterating the operation of inverse limit of continuous sequences of retractions. We denote this class by R. Allowing continuous images in the definition of class R, one obtains a strictly larger class, which we denote by RC. We show that every space in class RC is either Corson compact or else contains a copy of the ordinal segment $[0,ω_1]$. This improves a result of Kalenda, where the same was proved for the class of continuous images of Valdivia compacta. We prove that spaces in class R do not contain cutting P-points (see t…
It is know that the Valdivia compact spaces can be characterized by a special family of retractions called $r$-skeleton (see \cite{kubis1}). Also we know that there are compact spaces with $r$-skeletons which are not Valdivia. In this paper, we shall study $r$-squeletons and special families of closed subsets of compact spaces. We prove that if $X$ is a zero-dimensional compact space and $\{r_s:s\in Γ\}$ is an $r$-skeleton on $X$ such that $|r_s(X)| \leq ω$ for all $s\in Γ$, then $X$ has a dense subset consisting of isolated points. Also we give conditions to an $r$-skeleton in order that this…
We show that for every Dugundji compact $K$ of weight aleph one the Banach space $C(K)$ is 1-Plichko and the space $P(K)$ of probability measures on $K$ is Valdivia compact. Combining this result with the existence of a non-Valdivia compact group, we answer a question of Kalenda.
A topological space $Y$ is called a Kempisty space if for any Baire space $X$ every function $f:X\times Y\to\mathbb R$, which is quasi-continuous in the first variable and continuous in the second variable has the Namioka property. Properties of compact Kempisty spaces are studied in this paper. In particular, it is shown that any Valdivia compact is a Kempisty space and the cartesian product of an arbitrary family of compact Kempisty spaces is a Kempisty space.
An $r$-skeleton on a compact space is a family of continuous retractions having certain rich properties. The $r$-skeletons have been used to characterized the Valdivia compact spaces and the Corson compact spaces. Here, we characterized a compact space with an $r$-skeleton, for which the given $r$-skeleton can be extended to an $r$-skeleton on the Alexandroff Duplicate of the given space. Besides, we prove that if $X$ is a zero-dimensional compact space without isolated points and $\{r_s:s\in Γ\}$ is an $r$-skeleton on $X$, then there is $s\in Γ$ such that $cl(r_s[X])$ is not countable.
We investigate the class of compact spaces which are embeddable into a power of the real line $R^κ$ in such a way that c_0(κ) is dense in the image. We show that this is a proper subclass of the class of Valdivia, even when restricted to Corson compacta. We prove a preservation result concerning inverse sequences with semi-open retractions. As a corollary we obtain that retracts of Cantor or Tikhonov cubes belong to the above class.
In the present paper we investigate the class of compact trees, endowed with the coarse wedge topology, in the area of non-separable Banach spaces. We describe Valdivia compact trees in terms of inner structures and we characterize the space of continuous functions on them. We prove that all compact trees have the property $(M)$. Finally we prove that the space of continuous functions on an arbitrary tree with height less than $ω_1\cdotω_0$ is Plichko.
We construct a compact linearly ordered space $K$ of weight aleph one, such that the space $C(K)$ is not isomorphic to a Banach space with a projectional resolution of the identity, while on the other hand, $K$ is a continuous image of a Valdivia compact and every separable subspace of $C(K)$ is contained in a 1-complemented separable subspace. This answers two questions due to O. Kalenda and V. Montesinos.
For a compact space $K$ we denote by $C_w(K)$ ($C_p(K)$) the space of continuous real-valued functions on $K$ endowed with the weak (pointwise) topology. In this paper we discuss the following basic question which seems to be open: Let $K$ and $L$ be infinite compact spaces. Can it happen that $C_w(K)$ and $C_p(L)$ are homeomorphic? M. Krupski proved that the above problem has a negative answer when $K=L$ and $K$ is finite-dimensional and metrizable. We extend this result to the class of finite-dimensional Valdivia compact spaces $K$.

An elementary proof is given for the fact that every locally compact subsemigroup of a compact topological group is a closed subgroup. A sample consequence is that every commutative cancellative pseudocompact locally compact Hausdorff topological semigroup with open shifts is a compact topological group.
Under $\mathfrak{p} = \mathfrak{c}$, we answer Question 24 of \cite{dikranjan&shakhmatov3} for cardinality ${\mathfrak c}$ , by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size continuum admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.
We show that every compact connected group is the limit of a continuous inverse sequence, in the category of compact groups, where each successor bonding map is either an epimorphism with finite kernel or the projection from a product by a simple compact Lie group. As an application, we present a proof of an unpublished result of Charles Mills from 1978: every compact group is supercompact.
We discuss compact Hausdorff groups from the point of view of the general theory of absolute extensors. In particular, we characterize the class of simple, connected and simply connected compact Lie groups as AE(2)-groups the third homotopy group of which is $\text{\f Z}$. This is the converse of the corresponding result of R. Bott.
We use $\diamondsuit$ to construct, for every $α\leqω_1$ a sequential countably compact topological group of sequential order $α$. This establishes the independence of the existence of sequential countably compact non Fréchet groups from the usual axioms of ZFC and answers several questions of D.~Shakhmatov.
We extend to metrizable locally compact groups Rosenthal's theorem describing those Banach spaces containing no copy of $l_1$. For that purpose, we transfer to general locally compact groups the notion of interpolation ($I_0$) set, which was defined by Hartman and Ryll-Nardzewsky [25] for locally compact abelian groups. Thus we prove that for every sequence $\lbrace g_n \rbrace_{n<ω}$ in a locally compact group $G$, then either $\lbrace g_n \rbrace_{n<ω}$ has a weak Cauchy subsequence or contains a subsequence that is an $I_0$ set. This result is subsequently applied to obtain sufficient condi…
We define a class of spaces on which one may generalise the notion of compactness following motivating examples from higher-dimensional number theory. We establish analogues of several well-known topological results (such as Tychonoff's Theorem) for such spaces. We also discuss several possible applications of this framework, including the theory of harmonic analysis on non-locally compact groups.
We discuss which groups can be realized as the fundamental groups of compact Hausdorff spaces. In particular, we prove that the claim ``every group can be realized as the fundamental group of a compact Hausdorff space'' is consistent with the Zermelo - Fraenkel - Choice set theory.
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
The note contains a few results related to separation axioms and automatic continuity of operations in compact-like semitopological groups. In particular, is presented a semiregular semitopological group $G$ which is not $T_3$. We show that each weakly semiregular compact semitopological group is a topological group. On the other hand, constructed examples of quasiregular $T_1$ compact and $T_2$ sequentially compact quasitopological groups, which are not paratopological groups. Also we prove that a semitopological group $(G,τ)$ is a topological group provided there exists a Hausdorff topology …
We introduce a new class of locally compact groups, namely the strongly compactly covered groups, which are the Hausdorff topological groups $G$ such that every element of $G$ is contained in a compact open normal subgroup of $G$. For continuous endomorphisms $ϕ:G\to G$ of these groups we compute the algebraic entropy and study its properties. Also an Addition Theorem is available under suitable conditions.
We give a "limit-free formula" simplifying the computation of the topological entropy for topological automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups. This result allows us to extend several basic properties of the topological entropy known to hold for compact groups.
We prove that if there are $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters then, for every infinite cardinal $κ$ such that $κ^ω=κ$, there exists a group topology on the free Abelian group of cardinality $κ$ without nontrivial convergent sequences and such that every finite power is countably compact. In particular, there are arbitrarily large countably compact groups. This answers a 1992 question of D. Dikranjan and D. Shakhmatov.
