We study compact spaces which are obtained from metric compacta by iterating the operation of inverse limit of continuous sequences of retractions. We denote this class by R. Allowing continuous images in the definition of class R, one obtains a strictly larger class, which we denote by RC. We show that every space in class RC is either Corson compact or else contains a copy of the ordinal segment $[0,ω_1]$. This improves a result of Kalenda, where the same was proved for the class of continuous images of Valdivia compacta. We prove that spaces in class R do not contain cutting P-points (see the definition below), which provides a tool for finding spaces in RC minus R. Finally, we study linearly ordered spaces in class RC. We prove that scattered linearly ordered compacta belong to RC and we characterize those ones which belong to R. We show that there are only 5 types (up to order isomorphism) of connected linearly ordered spaces in class R and all of them are Valdivia compact. Finally, we find a universal pre-image for the class of all linearly ordered Valdivia compacta.
We prove that a compact space is monotonically Sokolov if and only if it is monotonically $ω$-monolithic. This gives answers to several questions of R. Rojas-Hernandez and V. V. Tkachuk.
It is know that the Valdivia compact spaces can be characterized by a special family of retractions called $r$-skeleton (see \cite{kubis1}). Also we know that there are compact spaces with $r$-skeletons which are not Valdivia. In this paper, we shall study $r$-squeletons and special families of closed subsets of compact spaces. We prove that if $X$ is a zero-dimensional compact space and $\{r_s:s\in Γ\}$ is an $r$-skeleton on $X$ such that $|r_s(X)| \leq ω$ for all $s\in Γ$, then $X$ has a dense subset consisting of isolated points. Also we give conditions to an $r$-skeleton in order that this…
We deeply study retractions associated to suitable models in compact spaces admitting a retractional skeleton and find several interesting consequences. Most importantly, we provide a new characterization of Valdivia compacta using the notion of retractional skeletons, which seems to be helpful when characterizing its subclasses. Further, we characterize Eberlein and semi-Eberlein compacta in terms of retractional skeletons and show that our new characterizations give an alternative proof of the fact that continuous image of an Eberlein compact is Eberlein as well as new stability results for …
We describe the supports of a class of real-valued maps on $C*(X)$ introduced by Radul. Using this description, a characterization of compact-valued retracts of a given space in terms of functional extenders is obtained. For example, if $X\subset Y$, then there exists a continuous compact-valued retraction from $Y$ onto $X$ if and only if there exists a normed weakly additive extender $u\colon C*(X)\to C*(Y)$ with compact supports preserving $\min$ (resp., $\max$) and weakly preserving $\max$ (resp., $\min$). Similar characterizations are obtained for upper (resp., lower) semi-continuous compa…
We prove that a countably compact space is monotonically retractable if and only if it has a full retractional skeleton. In particular, a compact space is monotonically retractable if and only if it is Corson. This gives an answer to a question of R. Rojas-Hern{á}ndez and V. V. Tkachuk. Further, we apply this result to characterize retractional skeleton using a topology on the space of continuous functions, answering thus a question of the first author and a related question of W. Kubiś.
We prove a preservation theorem for the class of Valdivia compact spaces, which involves inverse sequences of ``simple'' retractions. Consequently, a compact space of weight $\loe\aleph_1$ is Valdivia compact iff it is the limit of an inverse sequence of metric compacta whose bonding maps are retractions. As a corollary, we show that the class of Valdivia compacta of weight at most $\aleph_1$ is preserved both under retractions and under open 0-dimensional images. Finally, we characterize the class of all Valdivia compacta in the language of category theory, which implies that this class is pr…
The aim of this note is to characterize trees, endowed with coarse wedge topology, that have a retractional skeleton. We use this characterization to provide new examples of non-commutative Valdivia compact spaces that are not Valdivia.
In this article, we mainly study certain families of continuous retractions ($r$-skeletons) having certain rich properties. By using monotonically retractable spaces we solve a question posed by R. Z. Buzyakova in \cite{buz} concerning the Alexandroff duplicate of a space. Certainly, it is shown that if the space $X$ has a full $r$-skeleton, then its Alexandroff duplicate also has a full $r$-skeleton and, in a very similar way, it is proved that the Alexandroff duplicate of a monotonically retractable space is monotonically retractable. The notion of $q$-skeleton is introduced and it is shown …
Let R denote the smallest class of compact spaces containing all metric compacta and closed under limits of continuous inverse sequences of retractions. Class R is striclty larger than the class of Valdivia compact spaces. We show that every compact connected Abelian group which is a topological retract of a space from class R is necessarily isomorphic to a product of metric groups. This completes the result of V. Uspenskij and the author, where a compact connected Abelian group outside class R has been described.
An $r$-skeleton on a compact space is a family of continuous retractions having certain rich properties. The $r$-skeletons have been used to characterized the Valdivia compact spaces and the Corson compact spaces. Here, we characterized a compact space with an $r$-skeleton, for which the given $r$-skeleton can be extended to an $r$-skeleton on the Alexandroff Duplicate of the given space. Besides, we prove that if $X$ is a zero-dimensional compact space without isolated points and $\{r_s:s\in Γ\}$ is an $r$-skeleton on $X$, then there is $s\in Γ$ such that $cl(r_s[X])$ is not countable.
We investigate the class of continuous images of non-commutative Valdivia compact spaces, in particular its subclass of weakly non-commutative Cor- son countably compact spaces. A key tool is the study of non-commutative Corson countably compact spaces and their stability. The results are the non- commutative version of results by O. Kalenda (2003). Moreover, we present a study of retractional skeletons on Aleksandrov duplicates of ordinal spaces.
We investigate the class of compact spaces which are embeddable into a power of the real line $R^κ$ in such a way that c_0(κ) is dense in the image. We show that this is a proper subclass of the class of Valdivia, even when restricted to Corson compacta. We prove a preservation result concerning inverse sequences with semi-open retractions. As a corollary we obtain that retracts of Cantor or Tikhonov cubes belong to the above class.
We first prove a version of Tietze-Urysohn's theorem for proper functions taking values in non-negative real numbers defined on $σ$-compact locally compact Hausdorff spaces. As its application, we prove an extension theorem of proper metrics, which states that if $X$ is a $σ$-compact locally compact space, $A$ is a closed subset of $X$, and $d$ is a proper metric on $A$ that generates the same topology of $A$, then there exists a proper metric on $X$ such that $D$ generates the same topology of $X$ and $D|_{A^{2}}=d$. Moreover, if $A$ is a proper retraction, we can choose $D$ so that $(A, d)$ …
Some properties of skelatally generated spaces are established. In particular, it is shown that any compactum co-absolute to a $κ$-metrizable compactum is skeletally generated. We also prove that a compactum $X$ is skeletally generated if and only if its superextension $λX$ is skeletally Dugundji and raise some natural questions.
Alas, Junqueira and Wilson asked whether there is a discretely generated locally compact space whose one point compactification is not discretely generated and gave a consistent example using CH. Their construction uses a remote filter in $ω\times{}^ω2$ with a base of order type $ω_1$ when ordered modulo compact subsets. In this paper we study the existence and preservation (under forcing extension) of similar types of filters, mainly using small uncountable cardinals. With these results we show that the CH example can be constructed in more general situations.
We give a partial solution to a question by Alas, Junqueria and Wilson by proving that under PFA the one-point compactification of a locally compact, discretely generated and countably tight space is also discretely generated. After this, we study the cardinal number given by the smallest possible character of remote and far sets of separable metrizable spaces. Finally, we prove that in some cases a countable space has far points.
Assuming that there is a stationary set in $ω_{2}$ of ordinals of countable cofinality that does not reflect, we prove that there exists a compact space which is not Corson compact and whose all continuous images of weight at most $ω_1$ are Eberlein compacta. This yields an example of a Banach space of density $ω_{2}$ which is not weakly compactly generated but all its subspaces of density $ω_{1}$ are weakly compactly generated. We also prove that under Martin's axiom countable functional tightness does not reflect in small continuous images of compacta.
The notions of compactness and Hausdorff separation for generalized enriched categories allow us, as classically done for the category $\mathsf{Top}$ of topological spaces and continuous functions, to study $\textit{compactly generated spaces}$ and $\textit{quasi-spaces}$ in this setting. Moreover, for a class $\mathcal{C}$ of objects we generalize the notion of $\textit{$\mathcal{C}$-generated spaces}$, from which we derive, for instance, a general concept of $\textit{Alexandroff spaces}$. Furthermore, as done for $\mathsf{Top}$, we also study, in our level of generality, the relationship bet…
We define recurrence for a compactly generated para-topological group $G$ acting continuously on a locally compact Hausdorff space $X$ with $\dim X=0$, and then, show that if $\overline{Gx}$ is compact for all $x\in X$, the conditions (i) this dynamics is pointwise recurrent, (ii) $X$ is a union of $G$-minimal sets, (iii) the $G$-orbit closure relation is closed in $X\times X$, and (iv) $X\ni x\mapsto \overline{Gx}\in 2^X$ is continuous, are pairwise equivalent. Consequently, if this dynamics is pointwise product recurrent, then it is pointwise regularly almost periodic and equicontinuous; mor…
We prove that a continuous image of a Radon-Nikodým compact space of weight less than b is Radon-Nikodým compact. As a Banach space counterpart, subspaces of Asplund generated Banach spaces of density character less than b are Asplund generated. In this case, in addition, there exists a subspace of an Asplund generated space which is not Asplund generated which has density character exactly b.
We introduce a notion of topological entropy for continuous actions of compactly generated topological groups on compact Hausdorff spaces. It is shown that any continuous action of a compactly generated topological group on a compact Hausdorff space with vanishing topological entropy is amenable. Given an arbitrary compactly generated locally compact Hausdorff topological group $G$, we consider the canonical action of $G$ on the closed unit ball of $L^{1}(G)' \cong L^{\infty}(G)$ endowed with the corresponding weak-$^{\ast}$ topology. We prove that this action has vanishing topological entropy…
A map $f:X\to Y$ between topological spaces is skeletal if the preimage $f^{-1}(A)$ of each nowhere dense subset $A\subset Y$ is nowhere dense in $X$. We prove that a normal functor $F:Comp\to Comp$ is skeletal (which means that $F$ preserves skeletal epimorphisms) if and only if for any open surjective open map $f:X\to Y$ between zero-dimensional compacta with two-element non-degeneracy set $N^f=\{x\in X:|f^{-1}(f(x))|>1\}$ the map $Ff:FX\to FY$ is skeletal. This characterization implies that each open normal functor is skeletal. The converse is not true even for normal functors of finite deg…
