In this paper we consider the problem of characterization of topological spaces that embed into countably compact Hausdorff spaces. We study the separation axioms of subspaces of countably compact Hausdorff spaces and construct an example of a regular separable scattered topological space which cannot be embedded into an Urysohn countably compact topological space but embeds into a Hausdorff countably compact space.
Under $\mathfrak{p} = \mathfrak{c}$, we answer Question 24 of \cite{dikranjan&shakhmatov3} for cardinality ${\mathfrak c}$ , by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size continuum admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.

We prove that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a countably compact Hausdorff group topology on the free Abelian group of size continuum. As a consequence, we show that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a Wallace semigroup (i.e., a countably compact both-sided cancellative topological semigroup which is not a topological group).
We force a classification of all the Abelian groups of cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group with a non-trivial convergent sequence. In particular, we answer (consistently) Question 24 of Dikranjan and Shakhmatov for cardinality at most $2^{\mathfrak c}$, by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size at most $2^\mathfrak c$ admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.
Given a property $P$ of subspaces of a $T_1$ space $X$, we say that $X$ is {\em $P$-bounded} iff every subspace of $X$ with property $P$ has compact closure in $X$. Here we study $P$-bounded spaces for the properties $P \in \{ωD, ωN, C_2 \}$ where $ωD \, \equiv$ "countable discrete", $ωN \, \equiv$ "countable nowhere dense", and $C_2 \,\equiv$ "second countable". Clearly, for each of these $P$-bounded is between countably compact and $ω$-bounded. We give examples in ZFC that separate all these boundedness properties and their appropriate combinations. Consistent separating examples with better…
In this paper we study $n$-Hausdorff homogeneous and $n$-Urysohn homogeneous spaces. We give some upper bounds for the cardinality of these kind of spaces and give examples. Additionally we show that for every $n>2$, there is no $n$-Hausdorff 2-homogeneous space. Finally, for any $n$-Hausdorff space we construct an $n$-Hausdorff homogeneous extension which is the union of countably many $n$-H-closed spaces.
We obtain a forcing construction that shows that it is consistent that the torsion-free Abelian group $\mathbb{Q}^{(λ)}$ admits a Hausdorff group topology which is also $\mathcal{U}$-compact and contains no non-trivial convergent sequences, where $λ$ is a cardinal whose cofinality is $ω$ and $\mathcal{U}$ is a selective ultrafilter. This answers a question posed in arXiv:1904.05928.
The Hausdorff-Alexandroff Theorem states that any compact metric space is the continuous image of Cantor's ternary set $C$. It is well known that there are compact Hausdorff spaces of cardinality equal to that of $C$ that are not continuous images of Cantor's ternary set. On the other hand, every compact countably infinite Hausdorff space is a continuous image of $C$. Here we present a compact countably infinite non-Hausdorff space which is not the continuous image of Cantor's ternary set.
We study algebraic and topological properties of topological semigroups containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup C(p,q). We prove that each topological semigroup S with pseudocompact square contains no dense copy of C(p,q). On the other hand, we construct a (consistent) example of a pseudocompact (countably compact) Tychonov semigroup containing a copy of C(p,q).

Motivated by results of Juhász and van Mill in [13], we define the cardinal invariant $wt(X)$, the weak tightness of a topological space $X$, and show that $|X|\leq 2^{L(X)wt(X)ψ(X)}$ for any Hausdorff space $X$ (Theorem 2.8). As $wt(X)\leq t(X)$ for any space $X$, this generalizes the well-known cardinal inequality $|X|\leq 2^{L(X)t(X)ψ(X)}$ for Hausdorff spaces (Arhangel{\cprime}skiĭ~[1],Š}apirovskiĭ}~[18]) in a new direction. Theorem 2.8 is generalized further using covers by $G_κ$-sets, where $κ$ is a cardinal, to show that if $X$ is a power homogeneous compactum with a countable cover of …
Let $κ$ be an infinite cardinal. A topological space $X$ is $κ$-bounded if the closure of any subset of cardinality $\leκ$ in $X$ is compact. We discuss the problem of embeddability of topological spaces into Hausdorff (Urysohn, regular) $κ$-bounded spaces, and present a canonical construction of such an embedding. Also we construct a (consistent) example of a sequentially compact separable regular space that cannot be embedded into a Hausdorff $ω$-bounded space.
In this paper, some features of countably $α$-compact topological spaces are presented and proven. The connection between countably $α$% -compact, Tychonoff, and $α$-Hausdorff spaces is explained. The space is countably $α$-compact space iff every locally finite family of non-empty subsets of such space is finite is demonstrated. The countably $% α$-compact space with weight greater than or equal to $\aleph_0$ is the $α$-continuous image of a closed subspace of the cube $D^{\aleph_0}$ is discussed. The boundedness of $α$-continuous functions mapping $α$% -compact spaces to other spaces is clea…
A denumerable cellular family of a topological space $\mathbf{X}$ is an infinitely countable collection of pairwise disjoint non-empty open sets of $ \mathbf{X}$. It is proved that the following statements are equivalent in $\mathbf{ZF}$: (i) For every infinite set $X,[X]^{<ω}\mathbf{\ }$has a denumerable subset. (ii) Every infinite $0$-dimensional Hausdorff space admits a denumerable cellular family. It is also proved that (i) implies the following: (iii) Every infinite Hausdorff Baire space has a denumerable cellular family. Among other results, the following theorems are also proved in $\ma…
We investigate closed subsets (subsemigroups, resp.) of compact-like topological spaces (semigroups, resp.). We prove that each Hausdorff topological space can be embedded as a closed subspace into an H-closed topological space. However, the semigroup of $ω{\timesω}$-matrix units cannot be embedded into a topological semigroup which is a weakly H-closed topological space. We show that each Hausdorff topological space is a closed subspace of some $ω$-bounded pracompact topological space and describe open dense subspaces of countably pracompact topological spaces. Also, we construct a pseudocomp…
A 27 years old and still open problem of Juhasz and van Mill asks whether there exists a cardinal kappa such that every regular dense in itself countably compact space has a dense in itself subset of cardinality at most kappa. We give a negative answer for the analogous question where_regular_ is weakened to_Hausdorff_, and_coutnably compact_ is strengthened to_sequentially compact_.
It is well-known that every non-isolated point in a compact Hausdorff space is the accumulation point of a discrete subset. Answering a question raised by Z. Szentmiklossy and the first author, we show that this statement fails for countably compact regular spaces, and even for omega-bounded regular spaces. In fact, there are kappa-bounded counterexamples for every infinite cardinal kappa. The proof makes essential use of the so-called 'strong colorings' that were invented by the second author.
We show that if $Y$ is a dense subspace of a Tychonoff space $X$, then $w(X)\leq nw(Y)^{Nag(Y)}$, where $Nag(Y)$ is the Nagami number of $Y$. In particular, if $Y$ is a Lindelöf $Σ$-space, then $w(X)\leq nw(Y)^ω\leq nw(X)^ω$. Better upper bounds for the weight of topological groups are given. For example, if a topological group $H$ contains a dense subgroup $G$ such that $G$ is a Lindelöf $Σ$-space, then $w(H)=w(G)\leq ψ(G)^ω$. Further, if a Lindelöf $Σ$-space $X$ generates a dense subgroup of a topological group $H$, then $w(H)\leq 2^{ψ(X)}$. Several facts about subspaces of Hausdorff separab…
In this paper, we prove a theorem about embedding of some partially ordered topological spaces in topological hyperspaces equipped with Fell topology. Then we give some examples to show that the map defining the embedding may not be continuous with respect to Vietoris topology or Hausdorff topology equipped on the hyperspaces.
We study self-similar ultrametric Cantor sets arising from stationary Bratteli diagrams. We prove that such a Cantor set C is bi-Lipschitz embeddable in R^(d+1), where d denotes the integer part of its Hausdorff dimension. We compute this Hausdorff dimension explicitly and show that it is the abscissa of convergence of a zeta-function associated with a natural nerve of coverings of C (given by the Bratteli diagram). As a corollary we prove that the transversal of a (primitive) substitution tiling of R^d is bi-Lipschitz embeddable in R^(d+1) . We also show that C is bi-Hoelder embeddable in the…
The aim of this work is to give a pointfree description of the Cantor set. It can be shown that the Cantor set is homeomorphic to the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_{p}:=\{x\in\mathbb{Q}_{p}: |x|_p\leq 1\}$ for every prime number $p$. To give a pointfree description of the Cantor set, we specify the frame of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ by generators and relations. We use the fact that the open balls centered at integers generate the open subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and thus we think of them as the basic generators; on this poset we impose some relations and then the resulting quotient is the frame of the …
It is well known that every (real or complex) normed linear space $L$ is isometrically embeddable into $C(X)$ for some compact Hausdorff space $X$. Here $X$ is the closed unit ball of $L^*$ (the set of all continuous scalar-valued linear mappings on $L$) endowed with the weak$^*$ topology, which is compact by the Banach-Alaoglu theorem. We prove that the compact Hausdorff space $X$ can indeed be chosen to be the Stone-Cech compactification of $L^*\setminus\{0\}$, where $L^*\setminus\{0\}$ is endowed with the supremum norm topology.
Given a Banach space we consider the $σ$-ideal of all of its subsets which are covered by countably many hyperplanes and investigate its standard cardinal characteristics as the additivity, the covering number, the uniformity, the cofinality. We determine their values for separable Banach spaces, and approximate them for nonseparable Banach spaces. The remaining questions reduce to deciding if the following can be proved in ZFC for every nonseparable Banach space $X$: (1) $X$ can be covered by $ω_1$-many of its hyperplanes; (2) All subsets of $X$ of cardinalities less than ${\rm cf}([{\rm dens…
We study algebraic structure of the $λ$-polycyclic monoid $P_λ$ and its topologizations. We show that the $λ$-polycyclic monoid for an infinite cardinal $λ\geqslant 2$ has similar algebraic properties so has the polycyclic monoid $P_n$ with finitely many $n\geqslant 2$ generators. In particular we prove that for every infinite cardinal $λ$ the polycyclic monoid $P_λ$ is a congruence-free combinatorial $0$-bisimple $0$-$E$-unitary inverse semigroup. Also we show that every non-zero element $x$ is an isolated point in $(P_λ,τ)$ for every Hausdorff topology $τ$ on $P_λ$, such that $(P_λ,τ)$ is a …
The paper deals with the problem posed by Katz and Morris whether the free product with amalgamation of any Hausdorff topological groups is Hausdorff, the negative solution of which (even for the particular case of a closed amalgamated subgroup) easily follows from the relevant result by Uspenskij. The topology of such a product is characterized by proving that it coincides with the so-called $X_0$-topology in the sense of Mal'tsev for the corresponding pushout $X$ in the category of Hausdorff topological spaces. Applying this characterization, it is proved that the canonical mappings of Hausd…
As it was shown in the first part of this paper, there exists a duality between the category DSkeLC (introduced there) and the category SkeLC of locally compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous skeletal maps. We describe here the subcategories of the category DSkeLC which are dually equivalent to the following eight categories: all of them have as objects the locally compact Hausdorff spaces and their morphisms are, respectively, the injective (respectively, surjective) continuous skeletal maps, the injective (resp., surjective) open maps, the injective (resp., surjective) skeletal perfect maps…
In this paper, we first evaluate topological distributions of the sets of all doubling spaces, all uniformly disconnected spaces, and all uniformly perfect spaces in the space of all isometry classes of compact metric spaces equipped with the Gromov--Hausdorff distance. We then construct branching geodesics of the Gromov--Hausdorff distance continuously parameterized by the Hilbert cube, passing through or avoiding sets of all spaces satisfying some of the three properties shown above, and passing through the sets of all infinite-dimensional spaces and the set of all Cantor metric spaces. Our …
It is an interesting, maybe surprising, fact that different dense subspaces of even "nice" topological spaces can have different densities. So, our aim here is to investigate the set of densities of all dense subspaces of a topological space $X$ that we call the double density spectrum of $X$ and denote by $dd(X)$. We improve a result of Berner and Juhasz by showing that $dd(X)$ is always $ω$-closed (i.e. countably closed) if $X$ is Hausdorff. We manage to give complete characterizations of the double density spectra of Hausdorff and of regular spaces as follows. Let $S$ be a non-empty set of …
The notion of the ultrametrics can be considered as a zero-dimensional analogue of ordinary metrics, and it is expected to prove ultrametric versions of theorems on metric spaces. In this paper, we provide ultrametric versions of the Arens--Eells isometric embedding theorem of metric spaces, the Hausdorff extension theorem of metrics, the Niemytzki--Tychonoff characterization theorem of the compactness, and the author's interpolation theorem of metrics and theorems on dense subsets of spaces of metrics.
