An ordered graph $G_<$ is a graph with a total ordering $<$ on its vertex set. A monotone path of length $k$ is a sequence of vertices $v_1<v_2<\ldots<v_k$ such that $v_iv_{j}$ is an edge of $G_<$ if and only if $|j-i|=1$. A bi-clique of size $m$ is a complete bipartite graph whose vertex classes are of size $m$.
We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every ordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a monotone path of length $k$ as an induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at least $c_kn$, or its complement has a bi-clique of size at least $c_kn/\log n$. A similar result holds for ordered graphs containing no induced ordered subgraph isomorphic to a fixed ordered matching.
As a consequence, we give a short combinatorial proof of the following theorem of Fox and Pach. There exists a constant $c>0$ such the intersection graph $G$ of any collection of $n$ $x$-monotone curves in the plane has a bi-clique of size at least $cn/\log n$ or its complement contains a bi-clique of size at least $cn$. (A curve is called $x$-monotone if every vertical line intersects it in at most one point.) We also prove that if $G$ has at most $\left(\frac14 -ε\right){n\choose 2}$ edges for some $ε>0$, then $\overline{G}$ contains a linear sized bi-clique. We show that this statement does not remain true if we replace $\frac14$ by any larger constants.
A multifamily set representation of a finite simple graph $G$ is a multifamily $\mathcal{F}$ of sets (not necessarily distinct) for which each set represents a vertex in $G$ and two sets in $\mathcal{F}$ intersects if and only if the two corresponding vertices are adjacent. For a graph $G$, an \textit{edge clique covering} (\textit{edge clique partition}, respectively) $\mathcal{Q}$ is a set of cliques for which every edge is contained in \textit{at least} (\textit{exactly}, respectively) one member of $\mathcal{Q}$. In 1966, P. Erdös, A. Goodman, and L. Pósa (The representation of a graph by …

We study random subcube intersection graphs, that is, graphs obtained by selecting a random collection of subcubes of a fixed hypercube $Q_d$ to serve as the vertices of the graph, and setting an edge between a pair of subcubes if their intersection is non-empty. Our motivation for considering such graphs is to model `random compatibility' between vertices in a large network. For both of the models considered in this paper, we determine the thresholds for covering the underlying hypercube $Q_d$ and for the appearance of s-cliques. In addition we pose some open problems.
We consider well-quasi-order for classes of permutation graphs which omit both a path and a clique. Our principle result is that the class of permutation graphs omitting $P_5$ and a clique of any size is well-quasi-ordered. This is proved by giving a structural decomposition of the corresponding permutations. We also exhibit three infinite antichains to show that the classes of permutation graphs omitting $\{P_6,K_6\}$, $\{P_7,K_5\}$, and $\{P_8,K_4\}$ are not well-quasi-ordered.
In this paper, we relate the problem of finding a maximum clique to the intersection number of the input graph (i.e. the minimum number of cliques needed to edge cover the graph). In particular, we consider the maximum clique problem for graphs with small intersection number and random intersection graphs (a model in which each one of $m$ labels is chosen independently with probability $p$ by each one of $n$ vertices, and there are edges between any vertices with overlaps in the labels chosen). We first present a simple algorithm which, on input $G$ finds a maximum clique in $O(2^{2^m + O(m)} …
A collection of sets is intersecting, if any pair of sets in the collection has nonempty intersection. A collection of sets \(\mathcal{C}\) has the Helly property if any intersecting subcollection has nonempty intersection. A graph is /Helly/ if the collection of maximal complete subgraphs of \(G\) has the Helly property. We prove that if \(G\) is a \(k\)-regular graph with \(n\) vertices such that \(n>3k+\sqrt{2k^{2}-k}\), then the complement \(\bar{G}\) is not Helly. We also consider the problem of whether the properties of Hellyness and convergence under the clique graph operator are equiva…
Given positive integers n and m, and a probability measure P on {0, 1, ..., m} the random intersection graph G(n,m,P) on vertex set V = {1,2, ..., n} and with attribute set W = {w_1, w_2, ..., w_m} is defined as follows. Let S_1, S_2, ..., S_n be independent random subsets of W such that for any v \in V and any S \subseteq W we have \pr(S_v = S) = P(|S|) / \binom (m, |S|). The edge set of G(n,m,P) consists of those pairs {u,v} V for which S_u and S_v intersect. We study the asymptotic order of the clique number ω(G(n,m,P)) in random intersection graphs with bounded expected degrees. For instan…
Let $G$ be a connected graph and $W=\{ w_1, w_2, \ldots, w_k \} \subseteq V(G)$ be an ordered set. For every vertex $v$, the metric representation of $v$ with respect to $W$ is an ordered $k$-vector defined as $r(v|W):=(d(v,w_1), d(v,w_2), \ldots, d(v,w_k))$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. The set $W$ is called a resolving set for $G$ if distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct representations with respect to $W$. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for $G$ is its metric dimension and is denoted by $dim(G)$. In this paper, we study the metric dimension of…
Motivated by an approach to visualization of high dimensional statistical data given in Hurley and Oldford (2011), this work examines the clique structure of $J_n(m, m-1)$ Johnson graphs. Cliques and maximal cliques are characterized and proved to be of one of only two types. These types are characterized by features of the intersection and of the union of the subsets of [n] = {1, 2, ..., n} which define the vertices of the graph. Clique numbers and clique partition numbers follow. The results on Johnson graphs are connected to results on intersecting families of sets related to extremal set t…
An identifying code in a graph $G$ is a dominating set $C$ such that the closed neighborhood of each vertex in $G$ has a distinct intersection with $C$. In 2008, Gravier et al. determined the minimum cardinality of an identifying code of the Cartesian product of two cliques with the same size. In this note, we generalize this result to the Cartesian product of any two nontrivial cliques.
In this paper we show that for integers $s\geq2$, $t\geq1$, any co-edge-regular graph which is cospectral with the $s$-clique extension of the $t\times t$-grid is the $s$-clique extension of the $t\times t$-grid, if $t$ is large enough. Gavrilyuk and Koolen used a weaker version of this result to show that the Grassmann graph $J_q(2D,D)$ is characterized by its intersection array as a distance-regular graph, if $D$ is large enough.
An identifying code in a graph is a dominating set that also has the property that the closed neighborhood of each vertex in the graph has a distinct intersection with the set. It was recently shown by Gravier, Moncel and Semri that the minimum cardinality of an identifying code for the Cartesian product of two cliques of the same order n is the floor of 3n/2. We consider identifying codes of the direct product of two cliques. In particular, we answer a question of Klavzar and determine the minimum cardinality of an identifying code for the direct product of any two cliques.
Motivated by Chudnovsky's structure theorem of bull-free graphs, Abu-Khzam, Feghali, and Müller have recently proved that deciding if a graph has a vertex partition into disjoint cliques and a triangle-free graph is NP-complete for five graph classes. The problem is trivial for the intersection of these five classes. We prove that the problem is NP-complete for the intersection of two subsets of size four among the five classes. We also show NP-completeness for other small classes, such as graphs with maximum degree 4 and line graphs.
An edge clique cover of a graph is a set of cliques that covers all edges of the graph. We generalize this concept to "$K_t$ clique cover", i.e. a set of cliques that covers all complete subgraphs on $t$ vertices of the graph, for every $t \geq 1$. In particular, we extend a classical result of Erdös, Goodman, and Pósa (1966) on the edge clique cover number ($t = 2$), also known as the intersection number, to the case $t = 3$. The upper bound is tight, with equality holding only for the Turán graph $T(n,3)$. We also extend an algorithm of Scheinerman and Trenk (1999) to solve a weighted versio…
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be intersecting if every two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ intersect. An intersecting family is said to be \emph{trivial} it its sets have a common element. A graph $G$ is said to be $r$-EKR if at least one of the largest intersecting families of independent $r$-element sets of $G$ is trivial. Let $α(G)$ and $ω(G)$ denote the independence number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. Hilton and Spencer recently showed that if $G$ is the vertex-disjoint union of a cycle ${_*C}$ raised to the power $k^*$ and $s$ cycles ${_1C}, \dots, {_sC}$ raised to the po…
To any simple graph $G$, the clique graph operator $K$ associates the graph $K(G)$ which is the intersection graph of the maximal complete subgraphs of $G$. The iterated clique graphs are defined by $K^{0}(G)=G$ and $K^{n}(G)=K(K^{n-1}(G))$ for $n\geq 1$. If there are $m<n$ such that $K^{m}(G)$ is isomorphic to $K^{n}(G)$ we say that $G$ is convergent, otherwise, $G$ is divergent. The first example of a divergent graph was shown by Neumann-Lara in the 1970s, and is the graph of the octahedron. In this paper, we prove that among the connected graphs with maximum degree 4, the octahedron is the …
Robertson and Seymour proved that the relation of graph immersion is well-quasi-ordered for finite graphs. Their proof uses the results of graph minors theory. Surprisingly, there is a very short proof of the corresponding rough structure theorem for graphs without $K_t$-immersions; it is based on the Gomory-Hu theorem. The same proof also works to establish a rough structure theorem for Eulerian digraphs without $\vec{K}_t$-immersions, where $\vec{K}_t$ denotes the bidirected complete digraph of order $t$.

For a vector space $V$ the \emph{intersection graph of subspaces} of $V$, denoted by $G(V)$, is the graph whose vertices are in a one-to-one correspondence with proper nontrivial subspaces of $V$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding subspaces of $V$ have a nontrivial (nonzero) intersection. In this paper, we study the clique number, the chromatic number, the domination number and the independence number of the intersection graphs of subspaces of a vector space.
We present a hereditary class of graphs of unbounded clique-width which is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation. This result provides a negative answer to the question asked by Daligault, Rao and Thomassé in ("Well-quasi-order of relabel functions", Order, 27(3):301--315, 2010).

We prove that the clique graph operator $k$ is divergent on a locally cyclic graph $G$ (i.e. $N_G(v)$ is a circle) with minimum degree $δ(G)=6$ if and only if $G$ is $6$-regular. The clique graph $kG$ of a graph $G$ has the maximal complete subgraphs of $G$ as vertices, and the edges are given by non-empty intersections. If all iterated clique graphs of $G$ are pairwise non-isomorphic, the graph $G$ is $k$-divergent; otherwise, it is $k$-convergent. To prove our claim, we explicitly construct the iterated clique graphs of those infinite locally cyclic graphs with $δ\geq6$ which induce simply c…
Daligault, Rao and Thomassé asked whether every hereditary graph class that is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation has bounded clique-width. Lozin, Razgon and Zamaraev (JCTB 2017+) gave a negative answer to this question, but their counterexample is a class that can only be characterised by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. This raises the issue of whether the question has a positive answer for finitely defined hereditary graph classes. Apart from two stubborn cases, this has been confirmed when at most two induced subgraphs $H_1,H_2$ are forbidden. We confirm it for…
We investigate $\{0, 1, \ldots, t \}$-cliques of generators on dual polar graphs of finite classical polar spaces of rank $d$. These cliques are also known as Erdős-Ko-Rado sets in polar spaces of generators with pairwise intersections in at most codimension $t$. Our main result is that we classify all such cliques of maximum size for $t \leq \sqrt{8d/5}-2$ if $q \geq 3$, and $t \leq \sqrt{8d/9}-2$ if $q = 2$. We have the following byproducts. (a) For $q \geq 3$ we provide estimates of Hoffman's bound on these $\{0, 1, \ldots, t \}$-cliques for all $t$. (b) For $q \geq 3$ we determine the larg…
Let H be a 3-uniform hypergraph of order n with clique number k such that the intersection of all maximum cliques of H is empty. For fixed m=n-k, Szemerédi and Petruska conjectured the sharp bound $n\leq {m+2\choose 2}$. In this note the conjecture is verified for m=2,3 and 4.
If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq2\}$. Using the so-called clique-fusion, we show that nearly all cacti are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs. In the proof we make use of known characterizations of the trees and the cycles which are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs (see arXiv:1901.06292).
In 1994 S. McGuinness showed that any greedy clique decompo- sition of an n-vertex graph has at most $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor$ cliques (The greedy clique decomposition of a graph, J. Graph Theory 18 (1994) 427-430), where a clique decomposition means a clique partition of the edge set and a greedy clique decomposition of a graph is obtained by removing maximal cliques from a graph one by one until the graph is empty. This result solved a conjecture by P. Winkler. A multifamily set rep- resentation of a simple graph G is a family of sets, not necessarily distinct, each member of which represents …
In the 1970s, Erdos asked whether the chromatic number of intersection graphs of line segments in the plane is bounded by a function of their clique number. We show the answer is no. Specifically, for each positive integer $k$, we construct a triangle-free family of line segments in the plane with chromatic number greater than $k$. Our construction disproves a conjecture of Scott that graphs excluding induced subdivisions of any fixed graph have chromatic number bounded by a function of their clique number.
Biró et al. (1992) introduced $H$-graphs, intersection graphs of connected subgraphs of a subdivision of a graph $H$. They are related to many classes of geometric intersection graphs, e.g., interval graphs, circular-arc graphs, split graphs, and chordal graphs. We negatively answer the 25-year-old question of Biró et al. which asks if $H$-graphs can be recognized in polynomial time, for a fixed graph $H$. We prove that it is NP-complete if $H$ contains the diamond graph as a minor. We provide a polynomial-time algorithm recognizing $T$-graphs, for each fixed tree $T$. When $T$ is a star $S_d$…
In this paper we will show that there does not exist a distance-regular graph $Γ$ with intersection array $\{80, 54,12; 1, 6, 60\}$. We first show that a local graph $Δ$ of $Γ$ does not contain a coclique with 5 vertices, and then we prove that the graph $Γ$ is geometric by showing that $Δ$ consists of 4 disjoint cliques with 20 vertices. Then we apply a result of Koolen and Bang to the graph $Γ$, and we could obtain that there is no such a distance-regular graph.
The intersection ideal graph $Γ(S)$ of a semigroup $S$ is a simple undirected graph whose vertices are all nontrivial left ideals of $S$ and two distinct left ideals $I, J$ are adjacent if and only if their intersection is nontrivial. In this paper, we investigate the connectedness of $Γ(S)$. We show that if $Γ(S)$ is connected then $diam(Γ(S)) \leq 2$. Further we classify the semigroups such that the diameter of their intersection graph is two. Other graph invariants, namely perfectness, planarity, girth, dominance number, clique number, independence number etc. are also discussed. Finally, i…
One formulation of the Erdos-Szekeres monotone subsequence theorem states that for any red/blue coloring of the edge set of the complete graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots, N\}$, there exists a monochromatic red $s$-clique or a monochromatic blue increasing path $P_n$ with $n$ vertices, provided $N >(s-1)(n-1)$. %We had previously shown that a suitable generalization of this problem to quadruple systems is essentially equivalent to classical diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Here, we prove a similar statement as above in the off-diagonal case for triple systems, with the quasipolynomial bound $N>2^{c(…
A graph is called normal if its vertex set can be covered by cliques and also by stable sets, such that every such clique and stable set have non-empty intersection. This notion is due to Korner, who introduced the class of normal graphs as an extension of the class of perfect graphs. Normality has also relevance in information theory. Here we prove, that the line graphs of cubic graphs are normal.
Kloks, Kratsch, and Spinrad showed how treewidth and minimum-fill, NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems related to minimal triangulations, are broken into subproblems by block subgraphs defined by minimal separators. These ideas were expanded on by Bouchitté and Todinca, who used potential maximal cliques to solve these problems using a dynamic programming approach in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of a graph. It is known that solutions to the perfect phylogeny problem, maximum compatibility problem, and unique perfect phylogeny problem are characterized by minimal …
A family of sets is $(p,q)$-intersecting if every nonempty subfamily of $p$ or fewer sets has at least $q$ elements in its total intersection. A family of sets has the $(p,q)$-Helly property if every nonempty $(p,q)$-intersecting subfamily has total intersection of cardinality at least $q$. The $(2,1)$-Helly property is the usual Helly property. A hypergraph is $(p,q)$-Helly if its edge family has the $(p,q)$-Helly property and hereditary $(p,q)$-Helly if each of its subhypergraphs has the $(p,q)$-Helly property. A graph is $(p,q)$-clique-Helly if the family of its maximal cliques has the $(p,…
Daligault, Rao and Thomassé asked whether a hereditary class of graphs well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation has bounded clique-width. Lozin, Razgon and Zamaraev recently showed that this is not true for classes defined by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. However, in the case of finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs the question remains open and we conjecture that in this case the answer is positive. The conjecture is known to hold for classes of graphs defined by a single forbidden induced subgraph $H$, as such graphs are well-quasi-ordered and are of bounded cli…
A class of graphs G is chi-bounded if the chromatic number of the graphs in G is bounded by some function of their clique number. We show that the class of intersection graphs of simple x-monotone curves in the plane intersecting a vertical line is chi-bounded. As a corollary we show that the class of intersection graphs of rays in the plane is chi-bounded, and the class of intersection graphs of unit segments in the plane is chi-bounded
A universal representation theorem is derived that shows any graph is the intersection graph of one chordal graph, a number of co-bipartite graphs, and one unit interval graph. Central to the the result is the notion of the clique cover width which is a generalization of the bandwidth parameter. Specifically, we show that any planar graph is the intersection graph of one chordal graph, four co-bipartite graphs, and one unit interval graph. Equivalently, any planar graph is the intersection graph of a chordal graph and a graph that has {clique cover width} of at most seven. We further describe …
Curve pseudo-visibility graphs generalize polygon and pseudo-polygon visibility graphs and form a hereditary class of graphs. We prove that every curve pseudo-visibility graph with clique number $ω$ has chromatic number at most $3\cdot 4^{ω-1}$. The proof is carried through in the setting of ordered graphs; we identify two conditions satisfied by every curve pseudo-visibility graph (considered as an ordered graph) and prove that they are sufficient for the claimed bound. The proof is algorithmic: both the clique number and a colouring with the claimed number of colours can be computed in polyn…
Let $G$ be a graph and $t\ge 0$. A new graph parameter termed the largest reduced neighborhood clique cover number of $G$, denoted by ${\hatβ}_t(G)$, is introduced. Specifically, ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ is the largest, overall $t$-shallow minors $H$ of $G$, of the smallest number of cliques that can cover any closed neighborhood of a vertex in $H$. We verify that ${\hatβ}_t(G)=1$ when $G$ is chordal, and, ${\hatβ}_t(G)\le s$, where $G$ is an incomparability graph that does not have a $t-$shallow minor which is isomorphic to an induced star on $s$ leaves. Moreover, general properties of ${\hatβ}_t(G)$ i…
A string graph is the intersection graph of curves in the plane. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that if $G$ is a string graph on $n$ vertices, then $G$ contains either a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{c}$.

An ordered graph is a graph with a linear ordering on its vertex set. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that any ordered graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with the property that neither $G$ nor its complement contains an induced monotone path of size $k$, has either a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{c_k}$. This strengthens a result of Bousquet, Lagoutte, and Thomassé, who proved the analogous result for unordered graphs. A key idea of the above paper was to show that any unordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain an induced …
Let $α(G)$ and $β(G)$, denote the size of a largest independent set and the clique cover number of an undirected graph $G$. Let $H$ be an interval graph with $V(G)=V(H)$ and $E(G)\subseteq E(H)$, and let $ϕ(G,H)$ denote the maximum of ${β(G[W])\over α(G[W])}$ overall induced subgraphs $G[W]$ of $G$ that are cliques in $H$. The main result of this paper is to prove that for any graph $G$ $${β(G)}\le 2 α(H)ϕ(G,H)(\log α(H)+1),$$ where, $α(H)$ is the size of a largest independent set in $H$. We further provide a generalization that significantly unifies or improves some past algorithmic and struc…
It was noted already in the 90s that many classic graph classes, such as interval, chordal, and bipartite graphs, can be characterized by the existence of an ordering of the vertices avoiding some ordered subgraphs, called patterns. Very recently, all the classes corresponding to patterns on three vertices (including the ones mentioned above) have been listed, and proved to be efficiently recognizable. In contrast, very little is known about patterns on four vertices. One of the few graph classes characterized by a pattern on four vertices is the class of intersection graphs of rectangles that…
Let $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ be the residue class ring of integers modulo $p^s$, where $p$ is a prime number and $s$ is a positive integer. Using matrix representation and the inner rank of a matrix, we study the intersection, join, dimension formula and dual subspaces on vector subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n_{p^s}$. Based on these results, we investigate the Grassmann graph $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ is a connected vertex-transitive graph, and we determine its valency, clique number and maximum cliques. Finally, we characterize the automorphisms of $G_{p^s}(n,m)$.
EPG graphs, introduced by Golumbic et al. in 2009, are edge-intersection graphs of paths on an orthogonal grid. The class $B_k$-EPG is the subclass of EPG graphs where the path on the grid associated to each vertex has at most $k$ bends. Epstein et al. showed in 2013 that computing a maximum clique in $B_1$-EPG graphs is polynomial. As remarked in [Heldt et al., 2014], when the number of bends is at least $4$, the class contains $2$-interval graphs for which computing a maximum clique is an NP-hard problem. The complexity status of the Maximum Clique problem remains open for $B_2$ and $B_3$-EP…
