For a vector space $V$ the \emph{intersection graph of subspaces} of $V$, denoted by $G(V)$, is the graph whose vertices are in a one-to-one correspondence with proper nontrivial subspaces of $V$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding subspaces of $V$ have a nontrivial (nonzero) intersection. In this paper, we study the clique number, the chromatic number, the domination number and the independence number of the intersection graphs of subspaces of a vector space.
Intersection numbers for subspace designs are introduced and $q$-analogs of the Mendelsohn and Köhler equations are given. As an application, we are able to determine the intersection structure of a putative $q$-analog of the Fano plane for any prime power $q$. It is shown that its existence implies the existence of a $2$-$(7,3,q^4)_q$ subspace design. Furthermore, several simplified or alternative proofs concerning intersection numbers of ordinary block designs are discussed.
In this article, constant dimension subspace codes whose codewords have subspace distance in a prescribed set of integers, are considered. The easiest example of such an object is a {\it junta}; i.e. a subspace code in which all codewords go through a common subspace. We focus on the case when only two intersection values for the codewords, are assigned. In such a case we determine an upper bound for the dimension of the vector space spanned by the elements of a non-junta code. In addition, if the two intersection values are consecutive, we prove that such a bound is tight, and classify the ex…
Let $W$ denote a linear space over a fixed field ${\mathbb F}$. We define the notions of weak $ISP$-system and weak $(u,v)$-system $\cal S=\{(U_i,V_i):~ 1\leq i\leq m\}$ of subspaces of $W$. We give upper bounds for the size of weak $ISP$-systems and weak $(u,v)$-systems.
We continue the study by Melo and Winter [arXiv:1712.01763, 2017] on the possible intersection sizes of a $k$-dimensional subspace with the vertices of the $n$-dimensional hypercube in Euclidean space. Melo and Winter conjectured that all intersection sizes larger than $2^{k-1}$ (the "large" sizes) are of the form $2^{k-1}+2^i$. We show that this is almost true: the large intersection sizes are either of this form or of the form $35\cdot 2^{k-6}$. We also disprove a second conjecture of Melo and Winter by proving that a positive fraction of the "small" values is missing.
Following a combinatorial observation made by one of us recently in relation to a problem in quantum information [Nakata et al., Phys. Rev. X 7:021006 (2017)], we study what are the possible intersection cardinalities of a $k$-dimensional subspace with the hypercube in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. We also propose two natural variants of the problem by restricting the type of subspace allowed. We find that whereas every natural number eventually occurs as the intersection cardinality for some $k$ and $n$, on the other hand for each fixed k, the possible intersections sizes are governed by s…
A $(k,k-t)$-SCID (set of Subspaces with Constant Intersection Dimension) is a set of $k$-dimensional vector spaces that have pairwise intersections of dimension $k-t$. Let $\mathcal{C}=\{π_1,\ldots,π_n\}$ be a $(k,k-t)$-SCID. Define $S:=\langle π_1, \ldots, π_n \rangle$ and $I:=\langle π_i \cap π_j \mid 1 \leq i < j \leq n \rangle$. We establish several upper bounds for $\dim S + \dim I$ in different situations. We give a spectrum result for the case $(n-1)(k-t)\leq k$ and for the case $n\leq\frac{q^{t(n-η)}-1}{q^t-1}$, giving examples of $(k,k-t)$-SCIDs reaching a large interval of values for…
In this paper we introduce a graph structure, called subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ where the vertex set is the collection of non-trivial proper subspaces of a vector space and two vertices $W_1,W_2$ are adjacent if $W_1 + W_2=\mathbb{V}$. The diameter, girth, connectivity, maximal independent sets, different variants of domination number, clique number and chromatic number of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ are studied. It is shown that two subspace sum graphs are isomorphic if and only if the base vector spaces are isomorphic. Finally…
The vanishing ideal I of a subspace arrangement is an intersection of linear ideals. We give a formula for the Hilbert polynomial of I if the subspaces meet transversally. We also give a formula for the Hilbert series of a product J of the linear ideals without any assumptions on the subspace arrangement. It turns out that the Hilbert series of J is a combinatorial invariant of the subspace arrangement: it only depends on the intersection lattice and the dimension function. The graded Betti numbers of J are determined by the Hilbert series, so they are combinatorial invariants as well. The res…
We investigate the combinatorial structure of subspaces of the exterior algebra of a finite-dimensional real vector space, working in parallel with the extremal combinatorics of hypergraphs. Using initial monomials, projections of the underlying vector space onto subspaces, and the interior product, we find analogues of local and global LYM inequalities, the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, and the Ahlswede-Khachatrian bound for $t$-intersecting hypergraphs. Using these tools, we prove a new extension of the Two Families Theorem of Bollobás, giving a weighted bound for subspace configurations satisfying…
We solve a generalised form of a conjecture of Kalai motivated by attempts to improve the bounds for Borsuk's problem. The conjecture can be roughly understood as asking for an analogue of the Frankl-Rödl forbidden intersection theorem in which set intersections are vector-valued. We discover that the vector world is richer in surprising ways: in particular, Kalai's conjecture is false, but we prove a corrected statement that is essentially best possible, and applies to a considerably more general setting. Our methods include the use of maximum entropy measures, VC-dimension, Dependent Random …
The subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ was introduced by Das [Subspace Sum Graph of a Vector Space, arXiv:1702.08245], recently. The vertex set of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ consists of all the nontrivial proper subspaces of $\mathbb{V}$ and two distinct vertices $W_1$ and $W_2$ are adjacent if and only if $W_1+W_2=\mathbb{V}$. In that paper, some structural indices (e.g., diameter, girth, connectivity, domination number, clique number and chromatic number) were studied, but the characterization of automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb…
In this expository article, we discuss the relation between the Gaussian binomial and multinomial coefficients and ordinary binomial and multinomial coefficients from a combinatorial viewpoint, based on expositions by Butler, Knuth and Stanley.
In a recent paper [Comm. Algebra, 44(2016) 4724-4731], Das introduced the graph $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$, called subspace inclusion graph on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$, where the vertex set is the collection of nontrivial proper subspaces of $\mathbb{V}$ and two vertices are adjacent if one is properly contained in another. Das studied the diameter, girth, clique number, and chromatic number of $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$ when the base field is arbitrary, and he also studied some other properties of $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$ when the base field is finite. In this paper, t…
A vector space partition $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is a set of subspaces such that every $1$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^v$ is contained in exactly one element of $\mathcal{P}$. Replacing "every point" by "every $t$-dimensional subspace", we generalize this notion to vector space $t$-partitions and study their properties. There is a close connection to subspace codes and some problems are even interesting and unsolved for the set case $q=1$.
Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Define a real-valued weight function on the $1$-dimensional vector spaces of $V$ such that the sum of all weights is zero. Let the weight of a subspace $S$ be the sum of the weights of the $1$-dimensional subspaces contained in $S$. In 1988 Manickam and Singhi conjectured that if $n \geq 4k$, then the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces with nonnegative weight is at least the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces on a fixed $1$-dimensional subspace. Recently, Chowdhury, Huang, Sarkis, Shahriari, and Sudakov proved the…
We show that, for an arrangement of subspaces in a complex vector space with geometric intersection lattice, the complement of the arrangement is formal. We prove that the Morgan rational model for such an arrangement complement is formal as a differential graded algebra.
Ever since the famous Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem initiated the study of intersecting families of subsets, extremal problems regarding intersecting properties of families of various combinatorial objects have been extensively investigated. Among them, studies about families of subsets, vector spaces and permutations are of particular concerns. Recently, the authors proposed a new quantitative intersection problem for families of subsets: For $\mathcal{F}\subseteq {[n]\choose k}$, define its \emph{total intersection number} as $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{F})=\sum_{F_1,F_2\in \mathcal{F}}|F_1\cap F_2|$. The…
The origins of the notion of matchings in groups spawn from a linear algebra problem proposed by E. K. Wakeford [24] which was tackled in 1996 [10]. In this paper, we first discuss unmatchable subsets in abelian groups. Then we formulate and prove linear analogues of results concerning matchings, along with a conjecture that, if true, would extend the primitive subspace theorem. We discuss the dimension $m$-intersection property for vector spaces and its connection to matching subspaces in a field extension, and we prove the linear version of an intersection property result of certain subsets …
Let $\mathscr{F}$ and $\mathscr{G}$ be families of $k$- and $\ell$-dimensional subspaces, respectively, of a given $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Suppose that $x \cap y \ne 0$ for all $x \in \mathscr{F}$ and $y \in \mathscr{G}$. By explicitly constructing optimal feasible solutions to a semidefinite programming problem which is akin to Lovász's theta function, we show that $|\mathscr{F}| |\mathscr{G}| \leq {n-1 \brack k-1} {n-1 \brack \ell-1}$, provided that $n \geq 2k$ and $n \geq 2\ell$. The characterization of the extremal families is also established.
In this note, we find a sharp bound for the minimal number (or in general, indexing set) of subspaces of a fixed (finite) codimension needed to cover any vector space V over any field. If V is a finite set, this is related to the problem of partitioning V into subspaces.
In this paper, we investigate Erd\H os--Ko--Rado type theorems for families of vectors from $\{0,\pm 1\}^n$ with fixed numbers of $+1$'s and $-1$'s. Scalar product plays the role of intersection size. In particular, we sharpen our earlier result on the largest size of a family of such vectors that avoids the smallest possible scalar product. We also obtain an exact result for the largest size of a family with no negative scalar products.
