Titanium nitride halides, TiNX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) in the α-phase (orthorhombic) are exciting quasi two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems exhibiting a fascinating series of electronic ground states under different conditions. Pristine TiNX are semiconductors with varying energy gaps and possess attractive properties for potential applications in the fields of optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. Alkali metal intercalated TiNCl becomes superconducting at reasonably high temperature in the α-phase. We have revisited the electronic band structure of these compounds using density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles calculations. The atomic species and orbital resolved partial electronic energy density of states are calculated together with the total density of states (TDOS). The structural and elastic properties have been investigated in details for these layered compounds for the first time. The elastic anisotropy has been explored. The optical properties, including energy dependent real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant, optical conductivity, reflectivity, and loss function of TiNX are studied for the first time. The Debye temperatures of these compounds have been calculated and the related thermal and phonon parameters are discussed. The calculated physical parameters are compared with existing theoretical and experimental results and show fair agreement, where available. All these compounds are found to reflect electromagnetic radiation strongly in the mid ultraviolet region. The elastic properties show high degree of anisotropy. The lattice is highly compressible along the crystallographic c-direction. The effect of halogen atoms on various structural, elastic, electronic, and thermal properties in TiNX are also discussed in detail.
The layered Bi-chalcogenide compounds have been drawing much attention as a new layered superconductor family since 2012. Due to the rich variation of crystal structure and constituent elements, the development of new physics and chemistry of the layered Bi-chalcogenide family and its applications as functional materials have been expected. Recently, it was revealed that the layered Bi chalcogenides can show a relatively high thermoelectric performance (ZT = 0.36 in LaOBiSSe at ~650 K). Here, we show the crystal structure variation of the Bi-chalcogenide family and their thermoelectric propert…
Structure and chemical features of layered compounds BaM2Ge4Ch6 (M = Rh, Ir; Ch = S, Se) synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature method are systematically studied. These compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic phase with space group Pbca (No. 61). The remarkable structural feature is to have the M-Ge-Ch pyrite-type building units, stacking with Ba-Ch layers alternatively along c axis. It is very rare and novel that pyrite-type subunits as the building blocks in the layered compounds. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that there are strongly polarized cova…
Although SbSe2-based layered compounds have been predicted to be high-performance thermoelectric materials and topological materials, most of these compounds obtained experimentally have been insulators so far. Here, we present the effect of Bi substitution on the thermoelectric properties of SbSe2-based layered compounds NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xBixSe2 (x = 0-0.4). The room temperature electrical resistivity is decreased to 8.0 * 10^-5 ohmm for x = 0.4. The electrical power factor is calculated to be 1.4 * 10^-4 W/mK^2 at 660 K, which is in reasonable agreement with combined Jonker and Ioffe analysis. …
Two-dimensional electron dispersions with peculiar band crossings provide a platform for realizing topological phases of matter. Here we theoretically show that the $e_g$-orbital manifold of honeycomb-layered transition metal compounds accommodates a plethora of peculiar band crossings, such as multiple Dirac point nodes, quadratic band crossings, and line nodes. From the tight-binding analysis, we find that the band topology is systematically changed by the orbital dependent transfer integrals on the honeycomb network of edge-sharing octahedra, which can be modulated by distortions of the oct…
We propose a new layered-ternary Ta4SiC3 with two different stacking sequences (α- and β-phases) of the metal atoms along c axis and study their structural stability. The mechanical, electronic and optical properties are then calculated and compared with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Nb, Ta; A = Al, Si and X = C). The predicted compound in the α-phase is found to possess higher hardness than any of these compounds. The independent elastic constants of the two phases are also evaluated and the results discussed. The electronic band structures for α- and β-Ta4SiC3 show metallic conducti…
The structural, electronic, and elastic properties of three mixed transition metal carbonitrides TiNxC1-x, ZrNxC1-x, and HfNxC1-x (0<x<1) with the rock-salt structure were calculated at ambient and elevated up to 50 GPa hydrostatic pressures in the framework of the density functional theory methods. The lattice constants, densities, and bulk moduli of the considered compounds were shown to behave as linear functions of the nitrogen concentration x. The obtained linear dependencies of all these parameters allow for getting their estimates at any value of x in the range from 0 to 1. Gradual enha…
In this work, we expand the set of known layered compounds to include ionic layered materials, which are well known for superconducting, thermoelectric, and battery applications. Focusing on known ternary compounds from the ICSD, we screen for ionic layered structures by expanding upon our previously developed algorithm for identification of van der Waals (vdW) layered structures, thus identifying over 1,500 ionic layered compounds. Since vdW layered structures can be chemically mutated to form ionic layered structures, we have developed a methodology to structurally link binary vdW to ternary…
Although the precise microscopic knowledge of van der Waals interactions is crucial for understanding bonding in weakly bonded layered compounds, very little quantitative information on the strength of interlayer interaction in these materials is available, either from experiments or simulations. Here, using many-body perturbation and advanced density-functional theory techniques, we calculate the interlayer binding and exfoliation energies for a large number of layered compounds and show that, independent of the electronic structure of the material, the energies for most systems are around 20…
We report the effect of La-substitution on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Brownmillerite-like bilayered compounds Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) by using dc-magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance techniques. The Rietveld analysis of the room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns confirms no observable change of average crystal structure with the La-substitution. Both magnetic and magnetotransport properties are found to be very sensitive to the La-substitution. Interestingly, the La-substituted compounds show ferromagnetic-like behavior (due to…
We have investigated the physical properties of a new layered oxyselenide Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, which crystallizes in an unusual intergrowth structure with Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ and Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$ layers. Electric transport measurement indicates that Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ behaves metallic. Thermal transport and Hall measurements show that the type of the carriers is hole-like and it may be a potential thermoelectric material at high temperatures. First principle calculations are in agreement with experimental results and show that Bi$_{2}$YO$_{4}$Cu$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is a quasi…
The high pressure synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of Ca_25Co_22O_56(OH)_28 are reported. The compound has a misfit structure, consisting of double, square calcium oxide hydroxide rock-salt-like layers between hexagonal CoO_2 layers. The misfit compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m, and can be characterized by the coexistence of two subsystems with common a=4.893(5)A, c=8.825(9)A and b=95.745(8) parameters, and different b parameters: b_RS=4.894(5)A, and b_HEX=2.809(3)A, for the rock-salt and hexagonal type planes respectively. The compound shows Curie-Weiss para…
Building on discoveries in graphene and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides, van der Waals (VdW) layered heterostructures - stacks of such 2D materials - are being extensively explored with resulting new discoveries of novel electronic and magnetic properties in the ultrathin limit. Here we review a class of naturally occurring heterostructures - so called misfits - that combine disparate VdW layers with complex stacking. Exhibiting remarkable structural complexity and diversity of phenomena, misfits provide a platform on which to systematically explore the energetics and loc…
We analyze the anisotropic electrical and thermal transport measurements in single crystals of In2Te5 belonging to monoclinic space group C12 c1 with the temperature gradient applied parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis of the crystals. The thermal conductivity along the c-axis thermal conductivity parallel was found to smaller by a factor of 2 compared to the thermal conductivity along the direction perpendicular to the c-axis over the entire temperature range. In contrast, the Seebeck coefficient along the c-axis parallel was found to be higher than its value along the d…
Thermoelectric power generation has been recognized as one of the most important technologies, and high-performance thermoelectric materials have long been pursued. However, because of the large number of candidate materials, this quest is extremely challenging, and it has become clear that a firm theoretical concept from the viewpoint of band-structure engineering is needed. In this study, we theoretically demonstrate that pnictogen-dichalcogenide layered compounds, which originally attracted attention as a family of superconductors and have recently been investigated as thermoelectric materi…
We first analyze why the iron pnictides with high $T_c$ superconductivity so far are As-based, by the Hund's rule correlation picture, then examine the P-based and Sb-based cases, respectively. Consequently, we propose that CaClFeP with ZrCuSiAs-type structure is an As-free high $T_c$ iron-pnictide. The subsequent density functional theory calculations show that the ground state of CaClFeP is of a collinearly antiferromagnetic order on Fe moments with structural distortion, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic superexchange interac…
The structural and magnetic anomaly of the layered compound SrFeO$_{2}$ were examined by first principles density functional calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The down-spin Fe 3$d$ electron occupies the $d_{z^2}$ level rather than the degenerate ($d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$) levels, which explains the absence of Jahn-Teller instability, the easy ab-plane magnetic anisotropy and the observed three-dimensional (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) antiferromagnetic order. Monte Carlo simulations show that the strong inter-layer spin exchange is essential for the high Néel temperature.
Heat capacity measurements were performed on recently discovered iron based layered superconductors, non doped LaFePO and fluorine doped LaFePO. A relatively large electronic heat capacity coefficient and a small normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 3.3 K were observed in LaFePO. LaFePO0.94F0.06 had a smaller electronic heat capacity coefficient and a larger normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 5.8 K. These values indicate that these compounds have strong electron electron correlation and magnetic spin fluctuation, which are the signatures of unconventional superconductivity mediated by spin…
As a sister compound and isostructural of MnBi2Te4, the high quality MnSb2Te4 single crystals are grown via solid-state reaction where prolonged annealing and narrow temperature window play critical roles on account of its thermal metastability. X-ray diffraction analysis on MnSb2Te4 single crystals reveals pronounced cation intermixing, 28.9(7)% Sb antisite defects on the Mn (3a) site and 19.3(6)% Mn antisite defects on the Sb (6c) site, compared with MnBi2Te4. Unlike antiferromagnetic (AFM) nature MnBi2Te4, MnSb2Te4 contains magnetic and antiferromagnetic competition and exhibits a spin glas…
Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) reported in SnAs-based layered compound NaSn$_2$As$_2$ varies from 1.2 to 1.6 K, implying that its superconductivity is critically sensitive to non-stoichiometry. Here, we demonstrate that Na-doping on the Sn site (Na$_{1+x}$Sn$_{2-x}$As$_2$) is effective in enhancing superconductivity, leading to Tc = 2.1 K for x = 0.4. First-principles calculation indicates that such a doping, or Na$_{\rm Sn}$ antisite defects, is energetically favored over other cation vacancies. Our results pave the way for increasing Tc of layered tin pnictide superconductors.
We study a newly predicted layered-ternary compound Ti4SiN3 in its α- and β-phases. We calculate their mechanical, electronic and optical properties and then compare these with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Ti, Ta; A = Si, Al; X = N, C). The results show that the hypothetical Ti4SiN3 shows an improved behavior of the resistance to shape change and uniaxial tensions and a slight elastic anisotropy. The electronic band structures for both α- and β-Ti4SiN3 show metallic conductivity in which Ti 3d states dominate. The hybridization peak of Ti 3d and N 2s lies lower in energy than that of…
The tetragonal layered compounds TbTiGe and ErTiGe order antiferromagnetically at 276 K and 39 K, respectively. Partial substitution of Mo for Ti in these two compounds modifies the magnetic interactions giving rise to a ferromagnetic ground state which results in an enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic entropy change in ErTi0.85Mo0.15Ge for a magnetic field change of 5 T is ~10.5 J/kg/K against ~0.8 J/kg/K for ErTiGe in the vicinity of the magnetic transition. Thus, magnetocaloric properties of such layered materials may be tunable by suitable chemical substitutions.
We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a layered cage compound Ba3Rh4Ge16. Similar to Ba3Ir4Ge16, the compound is composed of 2D networks of cage units, formed by noncubic Rh-Ge building blocks, in marked contrast to the reported rattling compounds. The electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat capacity, and muSR measurements unveiled moderately coupled s-wave superconductivity with a critical temperature Tc = 7.0 K, the upper critical field ~ 2.5 T, the electron-phonon coupling strength ~ 0.80, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter ~ 7.89. The mass reduction by the s…
Resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on SrFe2As2 samples evidence a behavior very similar to that observed in LaFeAsO and BaFe2As2 with the difference that the formation of the SDW and the lattice deformation occur in a pronounced first order transition at T_0=205K. Comparing further data evidences that the Fe-magnetism is stronger in SrFe2As2 and in EuFe2As2 than in the other layered FeAs systems investigated up to now. Full potential LDA band structure calculations confirm the large similarity between the compounds, especially for the relevant low ene…
As a way to further improve the electronic properties of group V layered semiconductors, we propose to form in-layer 2D heterostructures of black phosphorus and grey arsenic. We use \textit{ab initio} density functional theory to optimize the geometry, determine the electronic structure, and identify the most stable allotropes as a function of composition. Since pure black phosphorus and pure grey arsenic monolayers differ in their equilibrium structure, we predict a structural transition and a change in frontier states, including a change from a direct-gap to an indirect-gap semiconductor, wi…
Based on the first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we investigate the electronic structures, topological phase transition (TPT) and topological properties of layered magnetic compound MnSb2Te4. It has the similar crystal and magnetic structure as the magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. We find that when the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered, the band structure of MnSb2Te4 in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has no band inversion at Γ. This is due to the SOC strength of Sb is less than that of Bi. The band inversion can be realized by increasing the SOC of Sb by 0.3 ti…
Effect of Ti doping on the electrical transport and magnetic properties of layered Na0.8Co1-xTixO2 compounds has been investigated. The lattice parameters a and c increase with x. A minor amount of Ti doping results in a metal-insulator transition at low temperatures. For samples with x > 0.03, the variable-range hopping process dominates the transport behavior above a certain temperature. The temperature dependence of magnetization of all the samples is found to obey the Curie-Weiss law. The mechanism of the doping effect is discussed.
In the work the analysis of crystal chemical researches of nickel borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = rare earth) is given. The reasons of representation of dependence of Tc from crystal chemical parameters by two separate curves for magnetic and nonmagnetic R are considered. Common for all R dependences of Tc from crystal chemical parameters similar existing in layered quasi-two-dimensional systems (HTSC cuprates and diborides) are established. The absence of influence on borocarbides Tc of magnetic properties R is determined. On the basis of the found correlations the radii of a number of rare earths …
In the context of characterizing nitrogen poor carbo-nitrides for different applications, identification of an unusual onset of spin polarization of N(p) states has been shown. A full saturation up to 3 Bohr magnetons is demonstrated in extended two-dimensional carbon networks of C6N and C12N hexagonal structures refined based on density functional theory calculations. From establishing the energy-volume equations of states in both compounds assuming spin degenerate (non spin polarized) and spin-polarized configurations, the ground state is identified as ferromagnetic. The variation of magneti…
The comparative study of structural, electronic properties, topology of the Fermi surface, and the features of chemical bonding in layered 1111-oxyarsenides LaRhAsO and LaIrAsO has been performed based on the results of ab initio modeling of their electronic structure. It was established that only weak sensitivity with respect both to electron and hole doping is expected for LaIrAsO being non-magnetic metal, however, the Rh-containing compound should be characterized with weak band magnetism, and the hole doping is expected to be able to move its ground state away from the boundary of magnetic…
Lead and tin chalcogenides have been studied widely due to their promising thermoelectric (TE) properties. Further enhancement in their TE efficiency has been reported upon the reduction of the dimension, which is an important feature in modern device fabrications. Using density functional theory combined with the Semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory, we studied the structural, electronic and TE properties of two-dimensional (2D) MX (M = Sn, Pb; X = S, Te) monolayers. Spin-orbit coupling was found to have significant effects on their electronic structure, particularly for the heavy compou…
Silicon and Germanium monopnictides SiP, SiAs, GeP and GeAs form a family of 2D layered semiconductors. We have succeeded in growing bulk single crystals of these compounds by melt-growth under high pressure (0.5-1 GPa) in a cubic anvil hot press. Large (mm-size), shiny, micaceous crystals of GeP, GeAs and SiAs were obtained, and could be exfoliated into 2D flakes. Small and brittle crystals of SiP were yielded by this method. High-pressure sintered polycrystalline SiP and GeAs have also been successfully used as a precursor in the Chemical Vapor Transport growth of these crystals in the prese…
Stimulated by the discovery of the giant birefringence (GBF) in LaOBiS2 (H. Wang, arxiv: 1304.5032), we check SrFBiS2 and find a superior birefringence up to 1.28. Naturally, AF layer (i.e., SrF) is considered to be of important and is demonstrated by the further study on AFBiS2 (A=Mg, Ca, Ba). Interestingly, MgFBiS2 shows the largest birefringence of 1.65. Furthermore, the origin of GBF is discussed in detail.
Since the discovery of copper oxide superconductor in 1986 [1], extensive efforts have been devoted to the search of new high-Tc superconducting materials, especially high-Tc systems other than cuprates. The recently discovered quaternary superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition Tc of 26 K [2], which has a much simple layered structure compared with cuprates, has attracted quick enthusiasm and is going to become a new high-Tc system [3-6]. Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity in the praseodymium-arsenide oxides Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs with an onset dr…
We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at tempera…
We have synthesized a new layered BiS$_{2}$-based compound SrFBiS2. This compound has similar structure to BiS2. It is built up by stacking up SrF layers and NaCl-type BiS2 layers alternatively along the c axis. Electric transport measurement indicates that SrFBiS2 is a semiconductor. Thermal transport measurement shows that SrFBiS2 has a small thermal conductivity and large Seebeck coefficient. First principle calculations are in agreement with experimental results and show that SrFBiS2 is very similar to LaOBiS2 which becomes superconductor with F doping. Therefore, SrFBiS2 may be a parent c…
Asceding interest of the scientific community in layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) as materials for innovative photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications led to unprecedented expansion of this family of compounds, reaching now several hundred refined structures. Despite the unique structural diversity of LHHPs, traditional approaches of describing their structures, such as dividing into Dion-Jacobson (DJ) or Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases for mostt structures are ambiguous and unquantifiable. Here, we introduced a quantitative layer shift factor (LSF) for a univocal classification and…
Layered transition-metal compounds with controllable magnetic behaviors provide many fascinating opportunities for the fabrication of high-performance magneto-electric and spintronic devices. The tuning of their electronic and magnetic properties is usually limited to the change of layer thickness, electrostatic doping, and the control of electric and magnetic fields. However, pressure has been rarely exploited as a control parameter for tailoring their magneto-electric properties. Here, we report a unique pressure-driven isostructural phase transition in layered CrCl3 accompanied by a simulta…
Apart from the most studied tin-oxide compounds, SnO and SnO2, intermediate states have been claimed to exist for more than a hundred years. In addition to the known homologous series (Seko et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 045702 (2008)), we here predict the existence of several new compounds with an O concentration between 50 % (SnO) and 67 % (SnO2). All these intermediate compounds are constructed from removing one or more (101) oxygen layers of SnO2. Since the van der Waals (vdW) interaction is known to be important for the Sn-Sn interlayer distances, we use a vdW-corrected functional, and com…
In 2012, we discovered superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 and LaO1-xFxBiS2, whose crystal structures are composed of alternate stacks of a BiS2-type conduction layer and a blocking layer. Since the discovery, many related superconductors and functional materials have been synthesized. Furthermore, the possibility of unconventional superconductivity has been proposed in recent theoretical and experimental studies. In addition, notable correlations between local structure and physical properties have been revealed in the BiS2-based systems. In this review article, we summarize the material development…

Until recently, spin-polarization in nonmagnetic materials was the exclusive territory of non- centrosymmetric structures. It was recently shown that a form of hidden spin polarization (named the Rashba-2 or R-2 effect) could exist in globally centrosymmetric crystals provided the individual layers belong to polar point group symmetries. This realization could considerably broaden the range of materials that might be considered for spin-polarization spintronic applications to include the hitherto forbidden spintronic compound that belong to centrosymetric symmetries. Here we take the necessary…
Despite the importance of the electron correlation in the first-principles description of the Li-ion cathode materials, the Coulomb interaction parameter, U is often treated as an ad hoc value. In practice, one usually relies on empirical ways of parametric treatment of U to optimally match the experimentally observed physical properties such as band gap or reaction energy. Here, using constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method, we self-consistently evaluate the Coulomb U and Hund J values for representative layered cathode materials including not only Li compounds but also Na compou…
In this work, we present a model of the surface states of nonsymmorphic semimetals. These are derived from surface mass terms that lift the high degeneracy imposed in the band structure by the nonsymmorphic bulk symmetries. Reflecting the reduced symmetry at the surface, the bulk bands are strongly modified. This leads to the creation of two-dimensional floating bands, which are distinct from Shockley states, quantum well states or topologically protected surface states. We focus on the layered semimetal ZrSiS to clarify the origin of its surface states. We demonstrate an excellent agreement b…
This study explores the relationship between phonon dynamics and negative thermal expansion (NTE) in Cu$_x$Ni$_{2-x}$(CN)$_4$. The partial replacement of nickel (II) by copper (II) in Ni(CN)$_2$ leads to a line phase, CuNi(CN)$_4$ (x = 1), and a solid solution, Cu$_x$Ni$_{2-x}$(CN)$_4$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.5). CuNi(CN)$_4$ adopts a layered structure related to that of Ni(CN)$_2$ (x = 0), and interestingly exhibits 2D NTE which is about 1.5 times larger. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements combined with first principles lattice dynamical calculations provide insights into the effect…
Birefringent crystals (BFC) have been extensively used in imaging spectrometer, laser devices, and optical components. Seeking new BFC is of important for both fundamental research and industrial application. Employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT), we found that LaOBiS2 (space group P4/nmm), the parent phase of recently discovered BiS2-superconductor, exhibits superior birefringence with a maximum value of 2.94, which is 13.4 times larger than the extensively used YVO4 (0.22). Furthermore, LaOBiS2 is an indirect semiconductor with a band-gap of 0.9 eV, which is suitable for …
Layered d-metal pnictide oxides are a unique class of compounds which consists of characteristic d-metal pnictide layers and metal oxide layers. More than 100 of these layered compounds, including the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting pnictide oxides, can be classified into 9 structure types. These structure types and the chemical and physical properties of the characteristic d-metal pnictide layers and metal oxide layers of the layered d-metal pnictide oxides are reviewed and discussed. Furthermore, possible approaches to design new superconductors based on these layered d-metal pn…
Structural analysis of a layered manganese tungstate diaminoalkane hybrid series suggests that this compound forms a spin-5/2 spin-ladder structure. We use X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy results to infer the structure. DC magnetization of the manganese compound and a possible copper analogue appear to show that the manganese system behaves like 1-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains (i.e. $J_{\parallel} \gg J_{\perp})$ while the copper system is fitted well by a $S = {1/2}$ spin ladder model, giving the parameters $g = 1.920 \pm 0.008$, $J_{…
The metastable layered compound MnBi2Te4 is the first experimentally realized intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall effect at high temperatures upon exfoliation to atomically thin layers. While its magnetic ordering and topological properties have generated intensive interest, the mechanism behind its metastability and the ideal crystal synthesis conditions have remained elusive. Here, using a combined first-principles-based approach that considers lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, we investigate the metastability of MnBi2Te…
In the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity, compounds with high density, low speed of sound, and complexity at either the atomic, nano- or microstructural level are preferred. The layered compound Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ defies these prevailing paradigms, exhibiting lattice thermal conductivity comparable to PbTe and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, despite its low density and simple structure. The excellent thermoelectric performance ($zT$ $\sim$ 1.5) in $n$-type Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ has thus far been attributed to its multi-valley conduction band, while its anomalous thermal properties have been largely ove…
We report the synthesis of the entire $Ln$AuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ ($Ln$ = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) series and focus on the magnetic properties of GdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ and TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that both compounds exhibit several magnetically ordered states at low temperatures, with evidence for magnetic fluctuations extending into the paramagnetic temperature region. For magnetic fields applied in the $ab$-plane there are several ordered state regions that are associated with …
Copper indium thiophosphate, CuInP2S6, has attracted much attention in recent years due to its van der Waals layered structure and robust ferroelectricity at room temperature. In this review, we aim to give an overview of the various properties of CuInP2S6, covering structural, ferroelectric, dielectric, piezoelectric and transport properties, as well as its potential applications. We also highlight the remaining questions and possible research directions related to this fascinating material and other compounds of the same family.
First-principle FLAPW-GGA band structure calculations are employed to obtain the structural, electronic properties and chemical bonding picture for two related layered phases, namely, quaternary oxyarsenides LaZnAsO and YZnAsO. These compounds are found to be direct-transition type semiconductors with the GGA gaps of about 0.65-1.30 eV. The peculiarities of chemical bonding in these phases are investigated and discussed in comparison with quaternary oxyarsenide LaFeAsO - a basic phase for the newly discovered 26-52K superconductors.
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
In analogy to III-V compounds, which have significantly broadened the scope of group IV semiconductors, we propose IV-VI compounds as isoelectronic counterparts to layered group V semiconductors. Using {\em ab initio} density functional theory, we study yet unrealized structural phases of silicon mono-sulfide (SiS). We find the black-phosphorus-like $α$-SiS to be almost equally stable as the blue-phosphorus-like $β$-SiS. Both $α$-SiS and $β$-SiS monolayers display a significant, indirect band gap that depends sensitively on the in-layer strain. Unlike 2D semiconductors of group V elements with…
