Heat capacity measurements were performed on recently discovered iron based layered superconductors, non doped LaFePO and fluorine doped LaFePO. A relatively large electronic heat capacity coefficient and a small normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 3.3 K were observed in LaFePO. LaFePO0.94F0.06 had a smaller electronic heat capacity coefficient and a larger normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 5.8 K. These values indicate that these compounds have strong electron electron correlation and magnetic spin fluctuation, which are the signatures of unconventional superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuation.
We investigate the superconducting-gap anisotropy in one of the recently discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductors, NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_2$ ($T_c$ $\sim$ 5 K), using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Whereas the previously discovered high-$T_c$ superconductors such as copper oxides and iron-based superconductors, which are believed to have unconventional superconducting mechanisms, have $3d$ electrons in their conduction bands, the conduction band of BiS$_2$-based superconductors mainly consists of Bi 6$p$ electrons, and hence the conventional superconducting mechanis…
We argue that the newly discovered superconductivity in a nearly magnetic, Fe-based layered compound is unconventional and mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, though different from the usual superexchange and specific to this compound. This resulting state is an example of extended s-wave pairing with a sign reversal of the order parameter between different Fermi surface sheets. The main role of doping in this scenario is to lower the density of states and suppress the pair-breaking ferromagnetic fluctuations.
We suggest a new family of Co/Ni-based materials that may host unconventional high temperature superconductivity (high-T$_c$). These materials carry layered square lattices with each layer being formed by vertex-shared transition metal tetrahedra cation-anion complexes. The electronic physics in these materials is determined by the two dimensional layer and is fully attributed to the three near degenerated $t_{2g}$ d-orbitals close to a $d^7$ filling configuration in the d-shell of Co/Ni atoms . The electronic structure meets the necessary criteria for unconventional high T$_c$ materials propo…
In 2012, we discovered superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 and LaO1-xFxBiS2, whose crystal structures are composed of alternate stacks of a BiS2-type conduction layer and a blocking layer. Since the discovery, many related superconductors and functional materials have been synthesized. Furthermore, the possibility of unconventional superconductivity has been proposed in recent theoretical and experimental studies. In addition, notable correlations between local structure and physical properties have been revealed in the BiS2-based systems. In this review article, we summarize the material development…
Strontium intercalation between van der Waals bonded layers of topological insulator Bi2Se3 is found to induce superconductivity with a maximum Tc of 2.9 K. Transport measurement on single crystal of optimally doped sample Sr0.1Bi2Se3 shows weak anisotropy (1.5) and upper critical field Hc2(0) equals to 2.1 T for magnetic field applied per-pendicular to c -axis of the sample. The Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths are Xi-ab = 15.3 Å and Xi_c = 10.2 Å. The lower critical field and zero temperature penetration depth Lambda(0) are estimated to be 0.35 mT and 1550 nm respectively. Hall and Seebeck …
There is still no general consensus on how one can describe the out-of-equilibrium phenomena in matter induced by an ultrashort light pulse. We investigate the pulse-induced dynamics in a layered Dirac semimetal SrMnBi2 by pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. At ~<1 ps, the electronic recovery slowed upon increasing the pump power. Such a bottleneck-type slowing is expected in a two-temperature model (TTM) scheme, although opposite trends have been observed to date in graphite and in cuprates. Subsequently, an unconventional power-law cooling took place at ~100 ps, indicating that spatia…

The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed…
We report on high-pressure (p_max = 2.1 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments probing the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in the layered superconductor 2H-NbSe_2. Upon increasing the pressure, we observe a substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s, which we find to scale linearly with T_c. This linear scaling is considered a hallmark feature of unconventional superconductivity, especially in high-temperature cuprate superconductors. Our current results, along with our earlier findings on 1T'-MoTe_2 (Z. Guguchia et. al., Nature Communications 8, 1082 (2017)), demonstrate…

The observation of superconductivity in the layered transition metal oxide NaxCoO2 y H2O (K. Takada et al., Nature 422, 53 (2003)) has caused a tremendous upsurge of scientific interest due to its similarities and its differences to the copper based high-temperature superconductors. Two years after the discovery, we report the fabrication of single-phase superconducting epitaxial thin films of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3 D2O grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. This opens additional roads for experimental research exploring the superconducting state and the phase diagram of this unconventional mate…
The recent observation of superconductivity in thin film infinite-layer nickelates$^{1-3}$ offers a different angle to investigate superconductivity in layered oxides$^{4}$. A wide range of candidate models have been proposed$^{5-10}$, emphasizing single- or multi-orbital electronic structure, Kondo or Hund's coupling, and analogies to cuprates. Clearly, further experimental characterization of the superconducting state is needed to develop a full understanding of the nickelates. Here we use magnetotransport measurements to probe the superconducting anisotropy in Nd$_{0.775}$Sr$_{0.225}$NiO$_{…

The interaction between superconductivity and band topology can lead to various unconventional superconducting (SC) states, and represents a new frontier in condensed matter physics research. Recently, the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) system 2M-WS2 has been identified as a Dirac semimetal exhibiting both superconductivity with the highest Tc = 8.5 K among all the TMD materials and topological surface states with a single Dirac cone. Here we report on muon spin rotation (muSR) and density functional theory studies of microscopic SC properties and the electronic structure in 2M-WS2 at a…

PtBi2 with a layered trigonal crystal structure was recently reported to exhibit an unconventional large linear magnetoresistance, while the mechanism involved is still elusive. Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we present a systematic study on its bulk and surface electronic structure. Through careful comparison with first-principle calculations, our experiment distinguishes the low-lying bulk bands from entangled surface states, allowing the estimation of the real stoichiometry of samples. We find significant electron doping in PtBi2, implying a substantial Bi …
The surprising discovery of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials, with transition temperatures climbing as high as 55 K, has lead to thousands of publications on this subject over the past two years. While there is general consensus on the unconventional nature of the Cooper pairing state of these systems, several central questions remain - including the role of magnetism, the nature of chemical and structural tuning, and the resultant pairing symmetry - and the search for universal properties and principles continues. Here we review the progress of research on iron-based supercon…
Disproportionation in 3d compounds can give rise to an unconventional electron-hole Bose liquid with a very rich phase diagram from a Bose metal, charge ordering insulator to an inhomogeneous Bose superfluid. Optimal conditions for the disproportionation driven high-T_c superconductivity are shown to realize only for several Jahn-Teller d^n configurations that permit the formation of well defined local composite bosons. These are the high-spin d^4, low-spin d^7, and d^9 configurations given the octahedral crystal field, and the d^1, high-spin d^6 configurations given the tetrahedral crystal fi…
Layered kagome-lattice materials with 3$d$ transition metals provide a fertile playground for studies on geometry frustration, band topology and other novel ordered states. A representative class of materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) have been proved to possess various unconventional phases such as superconductivity, non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ band topology, and electronic nematicity, which are intertwined with multiple interlaced charge density waves (CDW). However, the interplay among these novel states and their mechanisms are still elusive. Recently, the discovery of isostructural titani…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional copper oxides, a few layered compounds, which bear similarities to the cuprates, have also been found to host unconventional SC. Our recent observation of SC at 6.1 K in correlated electron material K2Cr3As3 (J. K. Bao et al., arXiv: 1412.0067) represents an obviously different paradigm, primarily because of its quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) nature. The new material is structurally featured by the (Cr3As3)2- double-walled subnano-tubes composed of face-sharing Cr6/2 (As6/2) octahedron linear chains, which are…
Magnetism, when combined with an unconventional electronic band structure, can give rise to forefront electronic properties such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, axion electrodynamics, and Majorana fermions. Here we report the characterization of high-quality crystals of EuSn$_2$P$_2$, a new quantum material specifically designed to engender unconventional electronic states plus magnetism. EuSn$_2$P$_2$ has a layered, Bi$_2$Te$_3$-type structure. Ferromagnetic interactions dominate the Curie-Weiss susceptibility, but a transition to antiferromagnetic ordering occurs near 30 K. Neutron dif…
