Based on the first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we investigate the electronic structures, topological phase transition (TPT) and topological properties of layered magnetic compound MnSb2Te4. It has the similar crystal and magnetic structure as the magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. We find that when the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered, the band structure of MnSb2Te4 in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has no band inversion at Γ. This is due to the SOC strength of Sb is less than that of Bi. The band inversion can be realized by increasing the SOC of Sb by 0.3 times, which drives MnSb2Te4 from a trivial AFM insulator to an AFM topological insulator (TI) or axion insulator. Uniaxial compressive strain along the layer stacking direction is another way to control the band inversion. The interlayer distance shorten by 5% is needed to drive the similar TPT. For the ferromagnetic (FM) MnSb2Te4 with experimental crystal structure, it is a normal FM insulator. The band inversion can happen when SOC is enhanced by 0.1 times or the interlayer distance is decreased by more than 1%. Thus, FM MnSb2Te4 can be tuned to be the simplest type-I Weyl semimetal with only one pair of Weyl nodes on the three-fold rotational axis. These two Weyl nodes are projected onto (1-10) surface with one Fermi arc connecting them.
Recent studies have revealed that the interlayer interaction in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials is not simply of van der Waals character but could coexist with quasi-bonding character. Here we classify the interlayer quasi-bonding interactions into two main categories (I: homo-occupancy interaction, II: hetero-occupancy interaction) according to the occupancy of the involved energy bands near the Fermi level. Then we investigate the quasi-bonding-interaction-induced band structure evolution of several representative 2D materials based on density functional theory calculations. Further c…
Layered materials have huge potential in various applications due to their extraordinary properties. To determine the interlayer interaction (or equivalently the layer spacing under different perturbations) is of critical importance. In this letter, we focus on one of the most prominent layered materials, graphite, and theoretically quantify the relationship between its interlayer spacing and the vibrational frequencies of its layer breathing and shear modes, which are measures of the interlayer interaction. The method used here to determine the interlayer interaction can be further applied to…
The anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) layered materials, with both scientific interest and potential application, have one more dimension to tune the properties than the isotropic 2D materials. The interlayer vdW coupling determines the properties of 2D multi-layer materials by varying stacking orders. As an important representative anisotropic 2D materials, multilayer rhenium disulfide (ReS2) was expected to be random stacking and lack of interlayer coupling. Here, we demonstrate two stable stacking orders (aa and a-b) of N layer (NL, N>1) ReS2 from ultralow-frequency and h…
2D layered materials have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their fascinating properties and potential applications. The interlayer interactions are much weaker than the intralayer bonds, allowing the as-synthesized materials to exhibit different stacking sequences (e.g. ABAB, ABCABC), leading to different physical properties. Here, we show that regardless of the space group of the 2D material, the Raman frequencies of the interlayer shear modes observed under the typical configuration blue shift for AB stacked materials, and red shift for ABC stacked materials, as the number of la…
The Lennard-Jones potential is widely used to describe the interlayer interactions within layered materials like graphene. However, it is also widely known that this potential strongly underestimates the frictional properties for layered materials. Here we propose to supplement the Lennard-Jones potential by a Gaussian-type potential, which enables more accurate calculations of the frictional properties of two-dimensional layered materials. Furthermore, the Gaussian potential is computationally simple as it introduces only one additional potential parameter that is determined by the interlayer…
The interlayer sliding energy landscape of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is investigated via a van der Waals corrected density functional theory approach. It is found that the main role of the van der Waals forces is to "anchor" the layers at a fixed distance, whereas the electrostatic forces dictate the optimal stacking mode and the interlayer sliding energy. A nearly free-sliding path is identified, along which bandgap modulations of ~0.6 eV are obtained. We propose a simple geometrical model that quantifies the registry matching between the layers and captures the essence of the corrugated…
We provide a simple and intuitive explanation for the interlayer sliding energy landscape of metal dichalcogenides. Based on the recently introduced registry index (RI) concept, we define a purely geometrical parameter which quantifies the degree of interlayer commensurability in the layered phase of molybdenum disulphide (2HMoS2). A direct relation between the sliding energy landscape and the corresponding interlayer registry surface of 2H-MoS2 is discovered thus marking the registry index as a computationally efficient means for studying the tribology of complex nanoscale material interfaces…
Unraveling the interlayer and intralayer coupling in two-dimensional layered MoS$_2$ by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have been extensively studied owing to their fascinating and technologically relevant properties. Their functionalities can be often tailored by the interlayer stacking pattern. Low-frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy provides a quick, non-destructive and inexpensive optical technique for stacking characterization, since the intensities of LF interlayer vibrational modes are sensitive to the details of the stacking. A simple and generalized interlayer bond polarizability model is proposed here to explain and predict how the LF Raman intensities depend on co…
Determining the material properties of layered systems like graphite and bigraphene from \emph{ab initio} calculations is very difficult. This is mostly due to the complex van der Waals forces which help bind the layers. Recently, Chen~\emph{et al.} [Chen et al., Sci. Rep. 3, 3046 (2013)] reported a novel approach for extracting geometry dependent energetic properties of general, layered graphitic systems from periodic graphite calculations on AA, AB and ABC graphite. Unfortunately, their analysis suffered from a number of technical and theoretical flaws which make their results unreliable for…

The layered material ZrSiTe is currently extensively investigated as a nodal-line semimetal with Dirac-like band crossings protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry close to the Fermi energy. A recent infrared spectroscopy study on ZrSiTe under external pressure found anomalies in the optical response, providing hints for pressure-induced phase transitions at $\approx$4.1 and $\approx$6.5 GPa. By pressure-dependent Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements combined with electronic band structure calculations we find indications for two pressure-induced Lifshitz transitions with major cha…
Layered materials span a very broad range of solids ranging from van der Waals materials to highly complex crystal structures such as clays. They are commonly believed to have highly anisotropic properties, which is essentially attributed to weak interlayer interactions. The layered Mg3Sb2 structure is currently being intensely scrutinized due to its outstanding thermoelectric properties. Based on quantitative chemical bonding analysis we unravel that Mg3Sb2 exhibits a nearly isotropic three-dimensional (3D) bonding network with the interlayer and intralayer bonds being surprisingly similar, a…
Two pressure-induced phase transitions have been theoretically studied in the layered iron phosphorus triselenide (FePSe3). Topological analysis of chemical bonding in FePSe3 has been performed based on the results of first-principles calculations within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method with hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT B3LYP functional. The first transition at about 6 GPa is accompanied by the symmetry change from R-3 to C2/m, whereas the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) occurs at about 13 GPa leading to the symmetry change from C2/m to P-31m. We found that t…
The folding of monolayer graphene leads to new layered systems, termed twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), generally displaying a certain interlayer rotation away from crystallographic alignment. We here present an atomic force microscopy study on folded graphene, revealing unexpectedly large twist angle dependent modulations of ~3 angstrom in interlayer distance. At the TBG surface, we find enhanced friction attributable to superlubricity in between incommensurate layers. At the bended edge, the radius of curvature scales with the folded length, congruent to earlier studies on carbon nanotubes.
Talc is an insulating layered material that is stable at ambient conditions and has high-quality basal cleavage, which is a major advantage for its use in van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we use near-field synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to investigate the structural and vibrational properties of talc crystals, ranging from monolayer to bulk, in the 300-750 cm-1 and <60 cm-1 spectral windows. We observe a symmetry crossover from mono to bilayer talc samples, attributed to the stacking of adjacent layers. The in-plane lattice par…
We report first principle calculations of electronic and mechanical properties of few-layer borophene with the inclusion of interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interaction. The anisotropic metallic behaviors are preserved from monolayer to few-layer structures. The energy splitting of bilayer borophene at $Γ$ point near the Fermi level is about 1.7 eV, much larger than the values (0.5--1 eV) of other layered semiconductors, indicating much stronger vdW interactions in metallic layered borophene. In particular, the critical strains are enhanced by increasing the number of layers, leading to much mor…
Unmasking charge transfer in the Misfits: ARPES and ab initio prediction of electronic structure in layered incommensurate systems without artificial strain
We constructed a simple but effective model to predict the layered intergrowth structures by combining the self-assembly phenomenon in confined space and the sandwich configuration of layered materials. In this model, a two-dimensional confined space is constructed by two known block layers, such as the Fe$_2$As$_2$ block of iron-based superconductors. Then, the crystal structure prediction is carried out only inside the confined space to search for brand-new block layers. We realized this model on the basis of the USPEX9.4 code. In the test, the already existing iron-based superconductors can…
Although the precise microscopic knowledge of van der Waals interactions is crucial for understanding bonding in weakly bonded layered compounds, very little quantitative information on the strength of interlayer interaction in these materials is available, either from experiments or simulations. Here, using many-body perturbation and advanced density-functional theory techniques, we calculate the interlayer binding and exfoliation energies for a large number of layered compounds and show that, independent of the electronic structure of the material, the energies for most systems are around 20…
Six recently developed exchanged functionals for pairing with different two versions of van der Waals density functionals (vdW-DF) are tested for weakly bonded solids. The test, using 26 layered weakly bonded compounds, benchmarks the lattice constants against experimental data and the interlayer binding energies against reference data from the random-phase approximation (RPA). The investigated functionals tend to give interlayer binding energies higher than the RPA benchmark, and the overall performance for lattice constants is good. The exchange functionals optB86b and cx13 paired with the o…
In periodic systems, electronic wave functions of the eigenstates exhibit the periodically modulated Bloch phases and are characterized by their wave numbers ${\bf k}$. We theoretically address the effects of the Bloch phase in general layered materials with stacking shift. When the interlayer shift and the Bloch wave vector ${\bf k}$ satisfy certain conditions, interlayer transitions of electrons are prohibited by the interference of the Bloch phase. We specify the manifolds in the ${\bf k}$ space where the hybridization of the Bloch states between the layers is suppressed in accord with the …
A detailed account of a recently developed method [Marom et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 046801 (2010)] to quantify the registry mismatch in layered materials is presented. The registry index, which was originally defined for planar hexagonal boron-nitride, is extended to treat graphitic systems and generalized to describe multi-layered nanotubes. It is shown that using simple geometric considerations it is possible to capture the complex physical features of interlayer sliding in layered materials. The intuitive nature of the presented model and the efficiency of the related computations sugges…
Excitonic quasi-particles, excitons/trions/bi-excitons, and their coupling with phonons and charge carriers play a crucial role in controlling the optical properties of atomically thin semiconducting 2D materials. In this work, we unravelled the dynamics of excitons/trions and their coupling with phonons and charge carriers in a few layers vertically and horizontally aligned MoS2. We observed trion signature up to the highest recorded temperature (330 K) in both systems and have shown that the dynamics of excitons/trions and their coupling with phonons and electrons are more affected in vertic…
The exploration of magnetism in two-dimensional layered materials has attracted extensive research interest. For the monoclinic phase CrI3 with interlayer antiferromagnetism, finding a static and robust way of realizing the intrinsic interlayer ferromagnetic coupling is desirable. In this Letter, we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the nonmagnetic element (e.g., O, S, Se, N, P, As and C) doped bi- and triple-layer CrI3 systems via first-principles calculations. Our results demonstrate that O, P, S, As, and Se doped CrI3 bilayer can realize interlayer ferromagnetism. Fu…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted tremendous interest as potential valleytronic and nano-electronic materials, in addition to being well-known as excellent lubricants in the bulk. The interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling and low frequency phonon modes, and how they evolve with the number of layers, are important for both the mechanical and electrical properties of 2D TMDs. Here we uncover the ultra-low frequency interlayer breathing and shear modes in few-layer MoS2 and WSe2, prototypical layered TMDs, using both Raman spectroscopy …
Layered materials such as graphite and transition metal dichalcogenides have extremely anisotropic mechanical properties owing to orders of magnitude difference between in-plane and out-of-plane interatomic interaction strengths. Although effects of mechanical perturbations on either intra- or inter-layer interactions have been extensively investigated, mutual correlations between them have rarely been addressed. Here we show that layered materials have an inevitable coupling between in-plane uniaxial strain and interlayer shear. Because of this, the uniaxial in-plane strain induces an anomalo…
We calculated the optical properties of an $N$-layer graphene by formulating the dynamical conductivity of each layer. This is the conductivity when an electromagnetic field is localized at a particular layer and differs from the standard conductivity calculated assuming a uniform field throughout all layers. By combining these conductivities with a transfer matrix method, we took into account the spatial variation of the electromagnetic field caused by internal reflections. The results obtained from the two conductivities show that similar peak structures originating from the interlayer elect…
Layered magnets have recently received tremendous attention, however, spin-exchange coupling mechanism across their interlayer regions is yet to be revealed. Here, we report a Bethe-Slater-curve (BSC) like behavior in nine transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers (MX2, M=V, Cr, Mn; X=S, Se, Te) and established interlayer spin-exchange coupling mechanisms at their van der Waals gaps using first-principle calculations. The BSC-like behavior offers a distance-dependent interlayer anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition. This phenomenon is explained with the spin-exchange couplin…
The manipulation of the antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in the epitaxial Fe/Cr/Fe(001) trilayer system by moderate 5 keV He ion beam irradiation has been investigated experimentally. It is shown that even for irradiation with very low fluences (10^14 ions/cm^2) a drastic change in strength of the coupling appears. For thin Cr-spacers (below 0.6 - 0.7 nm) the coupling strength decreases with fluence, becoming ferromagnetic for fluences above (2x10^14 ions/cm^2). The effect is connected with the creation of magnetic bridges in the layered system due to atomic exchange events caused by the …
Layered molybdenum dichalchogenides are semiconductors whose gap is controlled by delicate interlayer interactions. The gap tends to drop together with the interlayer distance, suggesting collapse and metallization under pressure. We predict, based on first principles calculations, that layered semiconductors 2H$_c$-MoSe$_2$ and 2H$_c$-MoTe$_2$ should undergo metallization at pressures between 28 and 40 GPa (MoSe$_2$) and 13 and 19 GPa (MoTe$_2$). Unlike MoS$_2$ where a 2H$_c$ $\to$ 2H$_a$ layer sliding transition is known to take place, these two materials appear to preserve the original 2H$_…
We present an exact treatment of layered many-body electronic systems in the presence of interlayer coupling within the Schwinger functional derivative approach on the Keldysh contour. Our transparent approach allows us to clarify the definition of interlayer coupling by showing the independent roles hybridization and interactions play in generating new electronic and magnetic excitations. We find interlayer coupling to induce a variety of plasmons, magnons, and excitons, residing within the a layer, traversing between layers, or propagating along the interface. Moreover, we predict interfacia…

We have studied the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in the layered ferromagnetic insulators CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ covered by Pt films in the measurement configuration where spin current traverses the ferromagnetic Cr layers. The LSSE response is clearly observed in the ferromagnetic phase and, in contrast to a standard LSSE magnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, persists above the critical temperatures in both CrSiTe$_3$/Pt and CrGeTe$_3$/Pt samples. With the help of a numerical calculation, we attribute the LSSE signals observed in the paramagnetic regime to exchange-dominated interlayer tra…
We propose a two-dimensional crystal which possesses low indirect band gaps of 0.55 eV (monolayer) and 0.43 eV (bilayer) and high carrier mobilities similar to those of phosphorene: GeP3. GeP3 has a stable three-dimensional layered bulk counterpart which is metallic and is known from experiment since 1970. It has a small cleavage energy, which suggests exfoliation of bulk material as viable means for the preparation of mono- and few-layer materials. The material shows strong interlayer quantum confinement effects, resulting in a band gap reduction from mono- to bilayer, and then to a semicondu…
Following the recent isolation of monolayer CrI3, there has been a surge of new two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, whose incorporation in van der Waals heterostructures offers a new platform for spintronics, proximity magnetism, and quantum spin liquids. A primary question in this burgeoning field is how exfoliating crystals to the few-layer limit influences their magnetism. Studies on CrI3 have shown a different magnetic ground state for ultrathin exfoliated films but the origin is not yet understood. Here, we use electron tunneling through few-layer crystals of the layered ant…
A lamellar lepidocrocite-type titanate structure with ~25% $\text{Ti}^{4+}$vacancies was recently synthesized, and it showed potential for use as an electrode in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In addition to lithium, we explore this material's ability to accommodate other monovalent ions with greater natural abundance (e.g. sodium and potassium) in order to develop lower-cost alternatives to lithium-ion batteries constructed from more widely available elements. Galvanostatic discharge/charge curves for the lepidocrocite material indicate that increasing the ionic radius of the monovalent …
Layered two-dimensional materials exhibit rich transport and optical phenomena in twisted or lattice-incommensurate heterostructures with spatial variations of interlayer hybridization arising from moiré interference effects. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of excitons in twisted heterobilayers and heterotrilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ stacks as representative realizations of twisted van der Waals bilayer and trilayer heterostructures, we observe contrasting optical signatures and interpret them in the theoretical framework of interlay…
A new interlayer force-field for layered hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) based structures is presented. The force-field contains three terms representing the interlayer attraction due to dispersive interactions, repulsion due to anisotropic overlaps of electron clouds, and monopolar electrostatic interactions. With appropriate parameterization, the potential is able to simultaneously capture well the binding and lateral sliding energies of planar h-BN based dimer systems as well as the interlayer telescoping and rotation of double walled boron-nitride nanotubes of different crystallographic ori…
The recent renaissance of black phosphorus (BP) as a two-dimensional 2D layered material has generated tremendous interest in its tunable electronic band gap and highly anisotropic transport properties that offer new opportunities for device applications. Many of these outstanding properties are attributed to its unique structural characters that still need elucidation. Here we show Raman measurements that reveal an ultralow-frequency collective compression mode (CCM), which is unprecedented among similar 2D layered materials. This novel CCM indicates an unusually strong interlayer coupling in…

Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ is a layered van der Waals magnetic material with a relatively high ordering temperature and large anisotropy. While most studies have concluded the interlayer ordering to be ferromagnetic, there have also been reports of interlayer antiferromagnetism in Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$. Here, we investigate the interlayer magnetic ordering by neutron diffraction experiments, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spin-polarized STM measurements, density functional theory plus U calculations and STM simulations. We conclude that the layers of Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ are coupled ferromagnetica…
We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the propagation of plasmons in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ (SLCO). We detect a plasmon gap of $\sim$~120 meV at the two-dimensional Brillouin zone center, indicating that low-energy plasmons in SLCO are not strictly acoustic. The plasmon dispersion, including the gap, is accurately captured by layered $t$-$J$-$V$ model calculations. A similar analysis performed on recent RIXS data from other cuprates suggests that the plasmon gap is generic and its size is related to the magnitude of the interl…
The structure and mobility of dislocations in the layered semiconductor InSe is studied within a multiscale approach based on generalized Peierls--Nabarro model with material-specific parametrization derived from first principles. The plasticity of InSe turns out to be attributed to peculiarities of the generalized stacking fault relief for the interlayer dislocation slips such as existence of the stacking fault with a very low energy and low energy barriers. Our results give a consistent microscopic explanation of recently observed [Science {\bf 369}, 542 (2020)] exceptional plasticity of InS…
We report broadband microwave absorption spectroscopy of the layered antiferromagnet CrCl3. We observe a rich structure of resonances arising from quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic dynamics. Due to the weak interlayer magnetic coupling in this material, we are able to observe both optical and acoustic branches of antiferromagnetic resonance in the GHz frequency range and a symmetry-protected crossing between them. By breaking rotational symmetry, we further show that strong magnon-magnon coupling with large tunable gaps can be induced between the two resonant modes.
Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like layered semiconductors provide a new platform for materials research because of their unique mechanical, electronic and optical attributes. Their in-plane covalent bonding and dangling-bond-free surface allow them to assemble various van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHSs) with sharply atomic interfaces that are not limited by lattice matching and material compatibility. Interlayer coupling, as a ubiquitous phenomenon residing among 2D materials (2DMs) systems, controls a thin layer exfoliation process and the assembly of vdWHSs and behaves with a unique degr…
Novel materials with nontrivial electronic and photonic band topology are crucial for realizing novel devices with low power consumption and heat dissipation, and quantum computing free of decoherence. Here using first-principles approach, we predict a class of ternary transition metal chalcogenides (TTMC) MM'Te$_4$ exhibits dual topological characteristics: quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators in their 2D monolayers and topological Weyl semimetals in their 3D noncentrosymmetric crystals upon van der Waals (vdW) stacking. Remarkably, we find that one can create and annihilate Weyl fermions, and …
The change in the electronic structure of layered Cu$_{x}$IrTe$_{2}$ has been characterized by transport and spectroscopic measurements, combined with first-principles calculations. The Cu-intercalation suppresses the monoclinic distortion, giving rise to the stabilization of the trigonal phase with superconductivity. Thermopower and Hall resistivity measurements suggest the multiband nature with hole and electron carriers for this system, which is masked by the predominance of the hole carriers enhanced by the interlayer hybridization in the trigonal phase. Rather than the instability of Ir $…
