We present an exact treatment of layered many-body electronic systems in the presence of interlayer coupling within the Schwinger functional derivative approach on the Keldysh contour. Our transparent approach allows us to clarify the definition of interlayer coupling by showing the independent roles hybridization and interactions play in generating new electronic and magnetic excitations. We find interlayer coupling to induce a variety of plasmons, magnons, and excitons, residing within the a layer, traversing between layers, or propagating along the interface. Moreover, we predict interfacial excitations, including an electron-hole pairing pathway, facilitated by previously ignored layer nonconserving interactions. Finally, we briefly explore the consequence of interlayer coupling on a bilayer square lattice system.
We study the c-axis transport of stacked, intrinsic junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y single crystals, fabricated by the double-sided ion beam processing technique from single crystal whiskers. Measurements of the I-V characteristics of these samples allow us to obtain the temperature and voltage dependence of the quasiparticle c-axis conductivity in the superconducting state, the Josephson critical current, and the superconducting gap. We show that the BCS d-wave model in the clean limit for resonant impurity scattering with a significant contribution from coherent interlayer tunneling, describes …
We consider the quasiparticle c-axis conductivity in highly anisotropic layered compounds in the presence of the magnetic field parallel to the layers. We show that at low temperatures the quasiparticle interlayer conductivity depends strongly on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field if the excitation gap has nodes on the Fermi surface. Thus measurements of the angle-dependent c-axis (out-of-plane) magnetoresistance, as a function of the orientation of the magnetic field in the layers, provide information on the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap (or pseudogap) on the Ferm…
Hybridization of Bogoliubov-quasiparticles between adjacent CuO$_2$ layers in the triple-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ studied by ARPES
The change in the electronic structure of layered Cu$_{x}$IrTe$_{2}$ has been characterized by transport and spectroscopic measurements, combined with first-principles calculations. The Cu-intercalation suppresses the monoclinic distortion, giving rise to the stabilization of the trigonal phase with superconductivity. Thermopower and Hall resistivity measurements suggest the multiband nature with hole and electron carriers for this system, which is masked by the predominance of the hole carriers enhanced by the interlayer hybridization in the trigonal phase. Rather than the instability of Ir $…
We report a La2CuO4-like interlayer antiferromagnetic order in Sr2IrO4 films with large orthorhombic distortion (> 1.5%). The biaxial lattice strain in epitaxial heterostructures of Sr2IrO4/Ca3Ru2O7 lowers the crystal symmetry of Sr2IrO4 from tetragonal (C4) to orthorhombic (C2), guiding the Ir 5d Jeff = 1/2 pseudospin moment parallel to the elongated b-axis via magnetic anisotropy. From resonant X-ray scattering experiments, we observed an antiferromagnetic order in the orthorhombic Sr2IrO4 film whose interlayer stacking pattern is inverted from that of the tetragonal Sr2IrO4 crystal. This in…
The notion of a quasiparticle, such as a phonon, a roton, or a magnon, is used in modern condensed matter physics to describe an elementary collective excitation. The intrinsic zero-temperature magnon damping in quantum spin systems can be driven by the interaction of the one-magnon states and multi-magnon continuum. However, detailed experimental studies on this quantum many-body effect induced by an applied magnetic field are rare. Here we present a high-resolution neutron scattering study in high fields on an S=1/2 antiferromagnet C9H18N2CuBr4. Compared with the non-interacting linear spin-…
Optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$ has been shown to enhance its c-axis superconducting-phase rigidity, as evidenced by a transient blue shift of the equilibrium inter-bilayer Josephson plasma resonance. Surprisingly, a transient c-axis plasma mode could also be induced above T$_{c}$ by the same apical oxygen excitation, suggesting light activated superfluid tunneling throughout the pseudogap phase of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$. However, despite the similarities between the above T$_{c}$ transient plasma mode and the equilibrium Josephson plasmon, alte…
In $α$-RuCl$_3$, an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Here, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-f…
Sr4Ru3O10 is a Ruddlesden-Popper compound with triple Ru-O perovskite layers separated by Sr-O alkali layers. This compound presents a rare coexistence of interlayer (c-axis) ferromagnetism and intralayer (basal-plane) metamagnetism at ambient pressure. Here we report the observation of pressure-induced, intralayer itinerant antiferromagnetism arising from the interlayer ferromagnetism. The application of modest hydrostatic pressure generates an anisotropy that causes a flattening and a tilting of RuO6 octahedra. All magnetic and transport results from this study indicate these lattice distort…
A pressure-induced simultaneous metal-insulator transition (MIT) and structural-phase transformation in lithium hydride with about 1% volume collapse has been predicted by means of the local density approximation (LDA) in conjunction with an all-electron GW approximation method. The LDA wrongly predicts that the MIT occurs before the structural phase transition. As a byproduct, it is shown that only the use of the generalized-gradient approximation together with the zero-point vibration produces an equilibrium lattice parameter, bulk modulus, and an equation of state that are in excellent agre…
The renormalization of quasiparticle (QP) dispersion in bilayer high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is investigated theoretically by examining respectively the interactions of the QP with spin fluctuations (SF) and phonons. It is illustrated that both interactions are able to give rise to a kink in the dispersion around the antinodes (near $(π,0)$). However, remarkable differences between the two cases are found for the peak/dip/hump structure in the lineshape, the QP weight, and the interlayer coupling effect on the kink, which are suggested to serve as a discriminance to single out the dominant interactio…
Optoelectronic excitations in monolayer MoS2 manifest from a hierarchy of electrically tunable, Coulombic free-carrier and excitonic many-body phenomena. Investigating the fundamental interactions underpinning these phenomena - critical to both many-body physics exploration and device applications - presents challenges, however, due to a complex balance of competing optoelectronic effects and interdependent properties. Here, optical detection of bound- and free-carrier photoexcitations is used to directly quantify carrier-induced changes of the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energi…
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
An interacting bilayer electron system provides an extended platform to study electron-electron interaction beyond single layers. We report here experiments demonstrating that the layer densities of an asymmetric bilayer electron system oscillate as a function of perpendicular magnetic field that quantizes the energy levels. At intermediate fields, this interlayer charge transfer can be well explained by the alignment of the Landau levels in the two layers. At the highest fields where both layers reach the extreme quantum limit, however, there is an anomalous, enhanced charge transfer to the m…
A review on the field-induced magnetic ordering is given, together with some results of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation focused on the critical behevior near the quantum critical point.
We investigate the relationship of the spontaneously inter-layer coherent ``111''state of quantum Hall bilayers at total filling factor ν=1 to ``mutual'' composite fermions, in which vortices in one layer are bound to electrons in the other. Pairing of the mutual composite fermions leads to the low-energy properties of the 111 state, as we explicitly demonstrate using field-theoretic techniques. Interpreting this relationship as a mechanism for inter-layer coherence leads naturally to two candidate states with non-quantized Hall conductance: the mutual composite Fermi liquid, and an inter-laye…
We report interlayer electronic transport in CaMnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Quantum oscillations and angular magnetoresistance suggest coherent electronic conduction and valley polarized conduction of Dirac states. Small cyclotron mass, large mobility of carriers and nontrivial Berry's phase are consistent with the presence of Dirac fermions on the side wall of the warped cylindrical Fermi surface. Similar to SrMnBi$_{2}$ that features an anisotropic Dirac cone, our results suggest that magnetic field-induced changes in the interlayer conduction are also present in layered bismuth-based materia…
We study the spin-fluctuation-mediated $s\pm$-wave superconductivity in the bilayer Hubbard model with vertical and diagonal interlayer hoppings. As in the two-leg ladder model with diagonal hoppings, studied previously by the present authors, superconductivity is strongly enhanced when one of the bands lies just below (or touches) the Fermi level, that is, when the band is incipient. The strong enhancement of superconductivity is because large weight of the spin fluctuations lies in an appropriate energy range, whereas the low energy, pair-breaking spin fluctuations are suppressed. The optimi…
We study the Hubbard model on the AB-stacked bilayer honeycomb lattice with a repulsive onsite interaction U in second order perturbation theory and in self-consistent random phase approximation. We determine the changes in the antiferromagnetic magnetic ordering tendencies due to the real and imaginary parts of the selfenergy at the band crossing points. In particular we present an estimate for the threshold value U* below which the magnetic order is endangered by the splitting of the quadratic band touching points into four Dirac points by an interaction-induced interlayer skew hopping. For …

We investigate the quasiparticle excitation of the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) system at total filling factor $ν_{\mathrm{T}} = 1$ in the limit of negligible interlayer tunneling under tilted magnetic field. We show that the intrinsic quasiparticle excitation is of purely pseudospin origin and solely governed by the inter- and intra-layer electron interactions. A model based on exciton formation successfully explains the quantitative behavior of the quasiparticle excitation gap, demonstrating the existence of a link between the excitonic QH state and the composite fermion liquid. Our results pro…
We report on the quantum Hall effect in two stacked graphene layers rotated by 2 degree. The tunneling strength among the layers can be varied from very weak to strong via the mechanism of magnetic breakdown when tuning the density. Odd-integer quantum Hall physics is not anticipated in the regime of suppressed tunneling for balanced layer densities, yet it is observed. We interpret this as a signature of Coulomb interaction induced interlayer coherence and Bose Einstein condensation of excitons that form at half filling of each layer. A density imbalance gives rise to reentrant behavior due t…
Magnetic-field-induced ordering of electrons around vortices is a striking phenomenon recently found in high-$T_c$ cuprates. To identify its consequence in the quasiparticle dynamics, the magnetic-field ($H$) dependence of the low-temperature thermal conductivity $κ$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ crystals is studied for a wide doping range. It is found that the behavior of $κ(H)$ in the sub-Kelvin region changes drastically across optimum doping, and the data for underdoped samples are indicative of unusual magnetic-field-induced localization of quasiparticles; this localization phenomenon is pro…
Hund's coupling is shown to generally favor, in a doped half-filled Mott insulator, an increase in the compressibility culminating in a Fermi-liquid instability towards phase separation. The largest effect is found about the frontier between an ordinary and an orbitally-decoupled ("Hund's") metal. The increased compressibility implies an enhancement of quasiparticle scattering, thus favoring other possible symmetry breakings. This physics is shown to happen in simulations of the 122 Fe-based superconductors, possibly implying the relevance of this mechanism in the enhancement of the the critic…
It is shown that in resistive nanowires out of equilibrium containing either single- or two-channel Kondo impurities the distribution function $f(E,U)$ obeys scaling behavior in terms of the quasiparticle energy $E$ and the bias voltage $U$. The numerically calculated $f(E,U)$ curves explain quantitatively recent experiments on Cu and Au nanowires. The systematics of the impurity concentration c_{imp} extracted from the comparison between theory and results on various Cu and Au samples strongly suggests that in these systems the scaling arises from magnetic Kondo impurities.
We show that the field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth ($λ$), for which muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) is an excellent microscopic probe, provides useful information on the degree of anisotropy for the superconducting order parameter. In type II superconductors associated with anisotropic order parameters, $λ$ is sensitive to the quasiparticle excitation induced by the Doppler shift due to a supercurrent around magnetic vortices. The presence of such low-energy excitations manifests itself in the non-zero slope of $λ$ against an external magnetic field. We review recent results on the…
We consider the quantum Hall effect induced by magnetic field and rotation, which can drive the Hall samples into the quantum Hall regime and induce fractional excitations. Both the mass and the charge of the Laughlin quasiparticles are predicted to be fractionally quantized. The observable effects induced by rotation are discussed. Based on the usual Hall samples under rotation, we propose an experimental setup for detecting the macroscopic quantization phenomena and the fractional mass of the Laughlin quasiparticles.
The quasiparticle resonant states around a single nonmagnetic impurity with unitary scattering in a d-wave superconductor is studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations based on a t-J model. Both the spatial variation of the order parameter and the local density of states (LDOS) around the impurity have been investigated. We find: (i) A particle-hole symmetric system has a single symmetric zero-energy peak in the LDOS regardless of the size of the superconducting coherence length ξ_0; (ii) For the particle-hole asymmetric case, an asymmetric splitting of the zero-energy peak is intri…
The electronic interlayer transport of the lightly doped antiferromagnet La1.79Eu0.2Sr0.01CuO4 has been studied by means of magneto-resistance measurements. The central problem addressed concerns the differences between the electronic interlayer coupling in the tetragonal low-temperature (LTT) phase and the orthorhombic low-temperature (LTO) phase. The key observation is that the spin-flip induced drop in the c-axis magneto-resistance of the LTO phase, which is characteristic for pure La2-xSrxCuO4, dramatically decreases in the LTT phase. The results show that the transition from orthorhombic …
Optical excitation of stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ has been shown to transiently enhance superconducting tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes. This effect was revealed by a blue-shift, or by the appearance of a Josephson Plasma Resonance in the terahertz-frequency optical properties. Here, we show that this photo-induced state can be strengthened by the application of high external magnetic fields oriented along the c-axis. For a 7-Tesla field, we observe up to a ten-fold enhancement in the transient interlayer phase correlation length, accompanied by a two-fold increase in the relax…
The effect of impurities which induce local interlayer tunneling in bilayer exciton condensates is discussed. We show that a localized single fermion bound state emerges inside the gap for any strength of impurity scattering and calculate the dependence of the impurity state energy and wave function on the potential strength. We show that such an impurity induced single fermion state enhances the interlayer coherence around it, and is similar to the superconducting proximity effect. As a direct consequence of these single impurity states, we predict that a finite concentration of such impuriti…
