The electronic interlayer transport of the lightly doped antiferromagnet La1.79Eu0.2Sr0.01CuO4 has been studied by means of magneto-resistance measurements. The central problem addressed concerns the differences between the electronic interlayer coupling in the tetragonal low-temperature (LTT) phase and the orthorhombic low-temperature (LTO) phase. The key observation is that the spin-flip induced drop in the c-axis magneto-resistance of the LTO phase, which is characteristic for pure La2-xSrxCuO4, dramatically decreases in the LTT phase. The results show that the transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal symmetry and from collinear to non-collinear antiferromagnetic spin structure eliminates the strain dependent anisotropic interlayer hopping as well as the concomitant spin-valve type transport channel. Implications for the stripe ordered LTT phase of La2-xBaxCuO4 are briefly discussed.
The Cu spin magnetism in La2-x-yEuySrxCuO4 (x<=0.17; y<=0.2) has been studied by means of magnetization measurements up to 14 T. Our results clearly show that in the antiferromagnetic phase Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM)superexchange causes Cu spin canting not only in the LTO phase but also in the LTLO and LTT phases. In La1.8Eu0.2CuO4 the canted DM-moment is about 50% larger than in pure La2CuO4 which we attribute to the larger octahedral tilt angle. We also find clear evidence that the size of the DM-moment does not change significantly at the structural transition at T_LT from LTO to LTLO and LT…
We present La and Cu NMR relaxation measurements in single crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4. A strong peak in the La spin-lattice relaxation rate observed in the spin ordered state is well-described by the BPP mechanism[1] and arises from continuous slowing of electronic spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature; these spin fluctuations exhibit XY-like anisotropy in the ordered state. The spin pseudogap is enhanced by the static charge-stripe order in the LTT phase.
We study the electronic properties of a LaEu0.20Sr0.15CuO4 single crystal under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.9 GPa. Both the freezing of the Cu 3d moments and the structural transition from the orthorhombic (LTO) to the tetragonal (LTT) phase are observed via the relaxation of the nuclear magnetization of La nuclei. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out under pressure on the same sample. The combination of all data reveals the connection between glassy dynamics, charge localization and the disappearance of superconductivity in the LTT phase.
Both cuprates and iron-based superconductors demonstrate nematicity, defined as the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry in electron systems. The nematic state can play a role in the high-transition-temperature superconductivity of these compounds. However, the microscopic mechanism responsible for the transport anisotropy in iron-based compounds remains debatable. Here, we investigate the electronic anisotropy of CaFeAsF by measuring its interlayer resistivity under magnetic fields with varying field directions. Counterintuitively, the interlayer resistivity was larger in the longitudi…

By using the first-principles method based on density of functional theory, we study the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene with some specific twist angles and interlayer spacings. With the decrease of the twist angle(the unit cell becomes larger), the energy band becomes narrower and Coulomb repulsion increases, leading to the enhancement of electronic correlation; On the other hand, as the interlayer spacing decreases and the interlayer coupling becomes stronger, the correlation becomes stronger. By tuning the interlayer coupling, we can realize the strongly correlated state w…
Theoretical and experimental studies have supported that the electronic structure of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure is described by two-dimensional Dirac fermions. When the interlayer tunneling is coherent, the electronic structure of the system becomes three-dimensional, and we expect the peak structure to appear in the interlayer resistivity under magnetic fields. We theoretically and experimentally show that the peak appears in the interlayer resistivity at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. From the experiment, we estimate that the magnitude of the interlayer tunneling is $…
We report interlayer electronic transport in CaMnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Quantum oscillations and angular magnetoresistance suggest coherent electronic conduction and valley polarized conduction of Dirac states. Small cyclotron mass, large mobility of carriers and nontrivial Berry's phase are consistent with the presence of Dirac fermions on the side wall of the warped cylindrical Fermi surface. Similar to SrMnBi$_{2}$ that features an anisotropic Dirac cone, our results suggest that magnetic field-induced changes in the interlayer conduction are also present in layered bismuth-based materia…

Tuning dimensionality in van der Waals materials with finite interlayer coupling has introduced various electronic phase transitions by conventional mechanical exfoliation. Particularly when the electronic order is tied to the modulation of the interlayer coupling, such dimensional tunability has a strong impact on its stability and properties, which has rarely been investigated experimentally. Here, we demonstrate a dimensional crossover of charge order in IrTe$_2$ from genuine two- to quasi-three-dimension using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Employing atomic…
We present an exact treatment of layered many-body electronic systems in the presence of interlayer coupling within the Schwinger functional derivative approach on the Keldysh contour. Our transparent approach allows us to clarify the definition of interlayer coupling by showing the independent roles hybridization and interactions play in generating new electronic and magnetic excitations. We find interlayer coupling to induce a variety of plasmons, magnons, and excitons, residing within the a layer, traversing between layers, or propagating along the interface. Moreover, we predict interfacia…

Layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-NbSe_2 is a good candidate to explore the charge density wave (CDW) and Mott physics. However, the effects of stacking orders and interlayer coupling in CDW 1T-NbSe_2 are still less explored and understood. Using density functional theory calculations, we present a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer and layered CDW 1T-NbSe_2. Our results indicate that monolayer CDW 1T-NbSe_2 is a magnetic insulator with \sqrt13\times\sqrt13 periodic lattice modulation. Nevertheless, the magnetic properties of bilayer CDWs 1T-NbSe_2…
Experimental and theoretical studies of the unoccupied electronic structure of CaCu2O3 single crystals have been performed using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy and band structure calculations. The measured hole distribution shows an unusual large number of holes in orbitals parallel to the interlayer direction which is in agreement with the theoretical analysis. CaCu2O3 deviates significantly from the standard pd-sigma cuprate picture. The corresponding strong interlayer exchange is responsible for the missing spin gap generic for other two-leg ladder cuprates.
The change in the electronic structure of layered Cu$_{x}$IrTe$_{2}$ has been characterized by transport and spectroscopic measurements, combined with first-principles calculations. The Cu-intercalation suppresses the monoclinic distortion, giving rise to the stabilization of the trigonal phase with superconductivity. Thermopower and Hall resistivity measurements suggest the multiband nature with hole and electron carriers for this system, which is masked by the predominance of the hole carriers enhanced by the interlayer hybridization in the trigonal phase. Rather than the instability of Ir $…

Manipulating crystal structure and the corresponding electronic properties in quantum materials provides opportunities for the exploration of exotic physics and practical applications. Here, by ultrafast electron diffraction, structure factor calculation and TDDFT-MD simulations, we report the photoinduced concurrent intralayer and interlayer structural transitions in the Td and 1T' phase of XTe2 (X=Mo, W). Concomitant with the interlayer structural transition by shear displacement, the ultrafast suppression of the intralayer Peierls distortion within 0.3 ps is demonstrated and attributed to M…
The interlayer magnetoresistance of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi liquid is considered for the case of a magnetic field that is rotated within the plane perpendicular to the most-conducting direction. Within semi-classical transport theory dips in the magnetoresistance occur at integer amgic angles only when the electronic dispersion parallel to the chains is nonlinear. If the field direction is fixed at one of the magic angles and the temperature is varied the resulting variation of the scattering rate can lead to a non-monotonic variation of the interlayer magnetoresistance with temperature.…
When two 2D electron gas layers, each at Landau level filling factor $ν=1/2$, are close together a condensate of interlayer excitons emerges at low temperature. Although the excitonic phase is qualitatively well understood, the incoherent phase just above the critical layer separation is not. Using a combination of interlayer tunneling spectroscopy and conventional transport, we explore the incoherent phase in samples both near the phase boundary and further from it. In the more closely spaced bilayers we find the electronic spectral functions narrower and the Fermi energy of the $ν= 1/2$ comp…
We develop a mean-field theory of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors. Our approach represents an improvement over standard RKKY model allowing spatial inhomogeneity of the system, free-carrier spin polarization, finite temperature, and free-carrier exchange and correlation to be accounted for self-consistently. As an example, we calculate the electronic structure of a Mn$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs superlattice with alternating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic layers and demonstrate the possibility of semiconductor magnetoresistance systems with designed properties.
Inverse melting refers to the rare thermodynamic phenomenon in which a solid melts into a liquid upon cooling, a transition that can occur only when the ordered (solid) phase has more entropy than the disordered (liquid) phase, and that has so far only been observed in a handful of systems. Here we report the first experimental observation for the inverse melting of an electronic liquid crystalline order in strontium-doped lanthanum nickelate, a compound isostructural with the superconducting cuprates, with a hole doping concentration of 1/3. Using x-ray scattering, we demonstrate that the iso…
We generalize the continuum model for Moiré structures made from twisted graphene layers, in order to include lattice relaxation and the formation of channels at very small (marginal) twist angles. We show that a precise description of the electronic structure at such small angles can be achieved by i) calculating first the relaxed atomic structure, ii) projecting the interlayer electronic hopping parameters using a suitable basis of Bloch states, and iii) increasing the number of harmonics in the continuum approximation to interlayer hopping. The results show a complex structure of quasi one …

The atomic-level vdW heterostructures have been one of the most interesting quantum material systems, due to their exotic physical properties. The interlayer coupling in these systems plays a critical role to realize novel physical observation and enrich interface functionality. However, there is still lack of investigation on the tuning of interlayer coupling in a quantitative way. A prospective strategy to tune the interlayer coupling is to change the electronic structure and interlayer distance by high pressure, which is a well-established method to tune the physical properties. Here, we co…
