We show quantifier elimination theorems for real closed valued fields with separated analytic structure and overconvergent analytic structure in their natural one-sorted languages and deduce that such structures are weakly o-minimal. We also provide a short proof that algebraically closed valued fields with separated analytic structure (in any rank) are $C$-minimal.
The purpose of this paper is to give a characterization for polynomials and rational functions which admit only non-negative values on definable sets in real closed valued fields. That is, generalizing the relative positivstellensätze for sets defined also by valuation terms. For this, we use model theoretic tools, together with existence of canonical valuations.
The first two steps of the construction of motivic integration in the fundamental work of Hrushovski and Kazhdan have been presented in arXiv:1006.2467v1. In this paper we present the final third step. As in arXiv:1006.2467v1, we limit our attention to the theory of algebraically closed valued fields of pure characteristic 0 expanded by a (VF, Γ)-generated substructure S in the language L_{RV}. A canonical description of the kernel of the lifting map is obtained.
We continue the study of the Hrushovski-Kazhdan integration theory and consider exponential integrals. The Grothendieck ring is enlarged via a tautological additive character and hence can receive such integrals. We then define the Fourier transform in our integration theory and establish some fundamental properties of it. Thereafter a basic theory of distributions is also developed. We construct the Weil representations in the end as an application. The results are completely parallel to the classical ones.
We define a notion of residue field domination for valued fields which generalizes stable domination in algebraically closed valued fields. We prove that a real closed valued field is dominated by the sorts internal to the residue field, over the value group, both in the pure field sort and in the geometric sorts. These results characterize forking and þ-forking in real closed valued fields (and also algebraically closed valued fields). We lay some groundwork for extending these results to a power-bounded $T$-convex theory.
Closed classes of three-valued logic generated by symmetric funtions that equal $1$ in almost all tuples from $\{1,2\}^n$ and equal $0$ on the rest tuples are considered. Criteria for bases existence for these classes is obtained.
We introduce tangent cones of subsets of cartesian powers of a real closed field, generalising the notion of the classical tangent cones of subsets of Euclidean space. We then study the impact of non-archimedean stratifications (t-stratifications) on these tangent cones. Our main result is that a t-stratification induces stratifications of the same nature on the tangent cones of a definable set. As a consequence, we show that the archimedean counterpart of a t-stratification induces Whitney stratifications on the tangent cones of a semi-algebraic set. The latter statement is achieved by workin…
We show that separably closed valued fields of finite imperfection degree (either with lambda-functions or commuting Hasse derivations) eliminate imaginaries in the geometric language. We then use this classification of interpretable sets to study stably dominated types in those structures. We show that separably closed valued fields of finite imperfection degree are metastable and that the space of stably dominated types is strict pro-definable.
In this note we show that groups with definable generics in a separably closed valued of finite imperfection degree can be embedded into groups definable in their algebraic closure.
Adjoining to the language of rings the function symbols for splitting coefficients, the function symbols for relative $p$-coordinate functions, and the division predicate for a valuation, some theories of pseudo-algebraically closed non-trivially valued fields admit quantifier elimination. It is also shown that in the same language the theory of pseudo-algebraically closed non-trivially valued fields of a given exponent of imperfection does not admit quantifier elimination, due to Galois theoretic obstructions.
We answer two open questions about the model theory of valued differential fields introduced by Scanlon. We show that they eliminate imaginaries in the geometric language introduced by Haskell, Hrushovski and Macpherson and that they have the invariant extension property. These two result follow from an abstract criterion for the density of definable types in enrichments of algebraically closed valued fields. Finally, we show that this theory is metastable.
Let $\mathcal M=\langle K;O\rangle$ be a real closed valued field and let $k$ be its residue field. We prove that every interpretable field in $\mathcal M$ is definably isomorphic to either $K$, $K(\sqrt{-1})$, $k$, or $k(\sqrt{-1})$. The same result holds when $K$ is a model of $T$, for $T$ an o-minimal power bounded expansion of a real closed field, and $O$ is a $T$-convex subring. The proof is direct and does not make use of known results about elimination of imaginaries in valued fields.
We construct Hrushovski-Kazhdan style motivic integration in certain expansions of ACVF. Such an expansion is typically obtained by adding a full section or a cross-section from the RV-sort into the VF-sort and some (arbitrary) extra structure in the RV-sort. The construction of integration, that is, the inverse of the lifting map L, is rather straightforward. What is a bit surprising is that the kernel of L is still generated by one element, exactly as in the case of integration in ACVF. The overall construction is more or less parallel to the original Hrushovski-Kazhdan construction. As an a…
Let $(K,ν)$ be a real closed valued field, and let $S\subseteq K^n$ be a definable open semi-algebraic set. We find an algebraic characterization of rational functions which are OVF-integral on $S$. We apply the existing model theoretic framework for proving ganzstellensätze, and need to control semi-sections and their relations to orderings. (joint work with Noa Lavi)
Closed classes of three-valued logic generated by periodic symmetric funtions that equal $1$ in tuples from $\{1,2\}^n$ and equal $0$ on the rest tuples are considered. Criteria for bases existence and finite bases existence for these classes is obtained.
We investigate the computability-theoretic properties of valued fields, and in particular algebraically closed valued fields and $p$-adically closed valued fields. We give an effectiveness condition, related to Hensel's lemma, on a valued field which is necessary and sufficient to extend the valuation to any algebraic extension. We show that there is a computable formally $p$-adic field which does not embed into any computable $p$-adic closure, but we give an effectiveness condition on the divisibility relation in the value group which is sufficient to find such an embedding. By checking that …
We seek to create tools for a model-theoretic analysis of types in algebraically closed valued fields (ACVF). We give evidence to show that a notion of 'domination by stable part' plays a key role. In Part A, we develop a general theory of stably dominated types, showing they enjoy an excellent independence theory, as well as a theory of definable types and germs of definable functions. In Part B, we show that the general theory applies to ACVF. Over a sufficiently rich base, we show that every type is stably dominated over its image in the value group. For invariant types over any base, stabl…
A Basarab-Kuhlmann style language L_RV is introduced in the Hrushovski-Kazhdan integration theory. The theory ACVF of algebraically closed valued fields formulated in this language admits quantifier elimination. In this paper, using well-known facts in the theory of valued fields, we give a straightforward proof of this fact. We also show that two expansions of ACVF, one with a section of the entire RV-sort and the other with a section of the residue field, admit quantifier elimination. Thereafter we show that, in terms of certain minimality conditions, the three theories are distinct geometri…
We give a simplified proof of elimination of imaginaries (in the geometric sorts) in ACVF, based on ideas of Hrushovski. This proof manages to avoid many of the technical issues which arose in the original proof by Haskell, Hrushovski, and Macpherson.
We present two of the three major steps in the construction of motivic integration, that is, a homomorphism between Grothendieck semigroups that are associated with a first-order theory of algebraically closed valued fields, in the fundamental work of Hrushovski and Kazhdan. We limit our attention to a simple major subclass of V-minimal theories of the form ACVF_S(0, 0), that is, the theory of algebraically closed valued fields of pure characteristic $0$ expanded by a (VF, Gamma)-generated substructure S in the language L_RV. The main advantage of this subclass is the presence of syntax. It en…
We prove quantifier elimination for the theory of quasi-real closed fields with a compatible valuation. This unifies the same known results for algebraically closed valued fields and real closed valued fields.
Marker and Steinhorn shown that given two models $M\prec N$ of an o-minimal theory, if all 1-types over $M$ realized in $N$ are definable, then all types over $M$ realized in $N$ are definable. In this article we characterize pairs of algebraically closed valued fields satisfying the same property. Although it is true that if $M$ is an algebraically closed valued field such that all 1-types over $M$ are definable then all types over $M$ definable, we build a counterexample for the relative statement, \textit{i.e.}, we show for any $n\geq 1$ that there is a pair $M\prec N$ of algebraically clos…
We show that dp-minimal valued fields are henselian and that a dp-minimal field admitting a definable type V topology is either real closed, algebraically closed or admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation. We give classifications of dp-minimal ordered abelian groups and dp-minimal ordered fields without additional structure.
We give an example of an imaginary defined in certain valued fields with analytic structure which cannot be coded in the `geometric' sorts which suffice to code all imaginaries in the corresponding algebraic setting.
The text is based on notes from a class entitled {\em Model Theory of Berkovich Spaces}, given at the Hebrew University in the fall term of 2009, and retains the flavor of class notes. It includes an exposition of material from \cite{hhmcrelle}, \cite{hhm} and \cite{HL}, regarding definable types in the model completion of the theory of valued fields, and the classification of imaginary sorts. The latter is given a new proof, based on definable types rather than invariant types, and on the notion of {\em generic reparametrization}. I also try to bring out the relation to the geometry of \cite{…
We consider valued fields with a distinguished contractive map as valued modules over the Ore ring of difference operators. We prove quantifier elimination for separably closed valued fields with the Frobenius map, in the pure module language augmented with functions yielding components for a p-basis and a chain of subgroups indexed by the valuation group.
We prove a tight bound on the number of realized $0/1$ patterns (or equivalently on the Vapnik-Chervonenkis codensity) of definable families in models of the theory of algebraically closed valued fields with a non-archimedean valuation. Our result improves the best known result in this direction proved by Aschenbrenner, Dolich, Haskell, Macpherson and Starchenko, who proved a weaker bound in the restricted case where the characteristics of the field $K$ and its residue field are both assumed to be $0$. The bound obtained here is optimal and without any restriction on the characteristics. We ob…
In this article we study definable functions in tame expansions of algebraically closed valued fields. For a given definable function we have two types of results: of type (I), which hold at a neighborhood of infinity, and of type (II), which hold locally for all but finitely many points in the domain of the function. In the first part of the article, we show type (I) and (II) results concerning factorizations of definable functions over the value group. As an application, we show that tame expansions of algebraically closed valued fields having value group $\mathbb{Q}$ (like $\mathbb{C}_p$ an…
We give a short argument why the tensor product valuation on $K \otimes_k L$ is multiplicative when $k$ is an algebraically closed valued field and $K$ and $L$ are valued extensions (all valuations being in $\bR$). When the valuation on $k$ is non trivial we use the fact that $ACVF$, the theory of algebraically closed (non trivially) valued fields, has quantifier elimination.
We study necessary and sufficient conditions for a valued field $\KF$ with value group $G$ and residue field $\kf$ (with char $\KF$ = char $\kf$) to admit a truncation closed embedding in the field of generalized power series $\kf((G, f))$ (with factor set $f$). We show that this is equivalent to the existence of a family ({\it tower of complements}) of $\kf$-subspaces of $\KF$ which are complements of the (possibly fractional) ideals of the valuation ring. If $\KF$ is a Henselian field of characteristic 0 or, more generally, an algebraically maximal Kaplansky field, we give an intrinsic const…
We prove that if a strongly minimal non-locally modular reduct of an algebraically closed valued field of characteristic 0 contains +, then this reduct is bi-interpretable with the underlying field.
We study model theoretic properties of valued fields (equipped with a real-valued multiplicative valuation), viewed as metric structures in continuous first order logic. For technical reasons we prefer to consider not the valued field $(K,|{\cdot}|)$ directly, but rather the associated projective spaces $K\bP^n$, as bounded metric structures. We show that the class of (projective spaces over) metric valued fields is elementary, with theory $MVF$, and that the projective spaces $\bP^n$ and $\bP^m$ are biïnterpretable for every $n,m \geq 1$. The theory $MVF$ admits a model completion $ACMVF$, th…
These notes form part of a joint research project on the logic of fields with many valuations, connected by a product formula. We define such structures and name them {\em globally valued fields} (GVFs). This text aims primarily at a proof that {\em the canonical GVF structure on $k(t)^{alg}$ is existentially closed}. This can be read as saying that a variety {\em with a distinguished curve class} is a good approximation for a formula in the language of GVFs, in the same way that a variety is close to a formula for the theory ACF of algebraically closed fields.
We show that for $G$ a simple compact Lie group, the infinitesimal subgroup $G^{00}$ is bi-intepretable with a real closed valued field. We deduce that for $G$ an infinite definably compact group definable in an o-minimal expansion of a field, $G^{00}$ is bi-interpretable with the disjoint union of a (possibly trivial) $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space and finitely many (possibly zero) real closed valued fields. We also describe the isomorphisms between such infinitesimal subgroups, and along the way prove that every {\em definable} field in a real closed convexly valued field $R$ is definably isomorp…
We present a unifying theory of fields with certain classes of analytic functions, called fields with analytic structure. Both real closed fields and Henselian valued fields are considered. For real closed fields with analytic structure, o-minimality is shown. For Henselian valued fields, both the model theory and the analytic theory are developed. We give a list of examples that comprises, to our knowledge, all principal, previously studied, analytic structures on Henselian valued fields, as well as new ones. The b-minimality is shown, as well as other properties useful for motivic integratio…

A henselian valued field $K$ is called separably tame if its separable-algebraic closure $K^{\operatorname{sep}}$ is a tame extension, that is, the ramification field of the normal extension $K^{\operatorname{sep}}|K$ is separable-algebraically closed. Every separable-algebraically maximal Kaplansky field is a separably tame field, but not conversely. In this paper, we prove Ax-Kochen-Ershov Principles for separably tame fields. This leads to model completeness and completeness results relative to the value group and residue field. As the maximal immediate extensions of separably tame fields a…
We study $[0,1]$-valued logics that are closed under the Łukasiewicz-Pavelka connectives; our primary examples are the the continuous logic framework of Ben Yaacov and Usvyatsov \cite{Ben-Yaacov-Usvyatsov:2010} and the Łukasziewicz-Pavelka logic itself. The main result of the paper is a characterization of these logics in terms of a model-theoretic property, namely, an extension of the omitting types theorem to uncountable languages.
We investigate valued fields which admit a valuation basis. Given a countable ordered abelian group G and a real closed, or algebraically closed field F, we give a sufficient condition for a valued subfield of the field of generalized power series F((G)) to admit a K-valuation basis. We show that the field of rational functions F(G) and the field F(G) of power series in F((G)) algebraic over F(G) satisfy this condition. It follows that for archimedean F and divisible G the real closed field F(G) admits a restricted exponential function.
