We show that every Fricke invariant meromorphic modular form for $Γ_0(N)$ whose divisor on $X_0(N)$ is defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and supported on Heegner divisors and the cusps is a generalized Borcherds product associated to a harmonic Maass form of weight $1/2$. Further, we derive a criterion for the finiteness of the multiplier systems of generalized Borcherds products in terms of the vanishing of the central derivatives of $L$-function of certain weight $2$ newforms. We also prove similar results for twisted Borcherds products.
We prove a new converse theorem for Borcherds' multiplicative theta lift which improves the previously known results. To this end we develop a newform theory for vector valued modular forms for the Weil representation, which might be of independent interest. We also derive lower bounds for the ranks of the Picard groups and the spaces of holomorphic top degree differential forms of modular varieties associated to orthogonal groups.
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of Borcherds products of half-integral weight associated to even lattices that split two hyperbolic planes. In particular we prove that half-integral weight Borcherds products exist for lattices of arbitrary rank.
We compute the divisors of Borcherds products on integral models of orthogonal Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain an integral version of a theorem of Borcherds on the modularity of a generating series of special divisors.
We prove the Borcherds Products Everywhere Theorem, Theorem 6.6, that constructs holomorphic Borcherds Products from certain Jacobi forms that are theta blocks without theta denominator. The proof uses generalized valuations from formal series to partially ordered abelian semigroups of closed convex sets. We present nine infinite families of paramodular Borcherds Products that are simultaneously Gritsenko lifts. This is the first appearance of infinite families with this property in the literature.
We obtain infinite product expansions in the sense of Borcherds for theta functions associated with certain positive-definite binary quadratic and binary hermitian forms. Among other things, we show that every weight 1 binary theta function is a Borcherds product. In particular, binary theta functions have zeros only at quadratic irrationalities.
We present an algorithm to compute all Borcherds product paramodular cusp forms of a specified weight and level, describing its implementation in some detail and giving examples of its use.
Given an infinite set of special divisors satisfying a mild regularity condition, we prove the existence of a Borcherds product of non-zero weight whose divisor is supported on these special divisors. We also show that every meromorphic Borcherds product is the quotient of two holomorphic ones. The proofs of both results rely on the properties of vector valued Eisenstein series for the Weil representation.
We show that certain spaces of vector valued modular forms are isomorphic to spaces of scalar valued modular forms whose Fourier coefficients are supported on suitable progressions. As an application we give a very explicit description of Borcherds products on Hilbert modular surfaces.
In this note, we construct canonical bases for the spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms with poles supported at the cusp $\infty$ for $Γ_{0}(4)$ of integral weight $k$ for $k\leq-1$, and we make use of the basis elements for the case $k=-1$ to construct explicit Borcherds products on unitary group $U(2,1)$.
We present an algorithm for computing Borcherds products, which has polynomial runtime. It deals efficiently with the bounds on Fourier expansion indices originating in Weyl chambers. Naive multiplication has exponential runtime due to inefficient handling of these bounds. An implementation of the new algorithm shows that it is also much faster in practice.
We provide a construction of the multiplicative Borcherds lift for unitary groups U(1,m), which takes weakly holomorphic elliptic modular forms and lifts them to meromorphic automorphic forms having infinite product expansions and taking their zeros and poles along Heegner divisors. The result is obtained through the transfer of Borcherds' theory to unitary groups via a suitable embedding of U(1,m) into O(2,2m). Further, we examine the values taken by the Borcherds products around the cusps of the symmetric domain of the unitary group. Finally, as an application of the lifting, we derive a mod…
We show that the values of Borcherds products on Shimura varieties of orthogonal type at certain CM points are given in terms of coefficients of the holomorphic part of weight one harmonic weak Maass forms. Furthermore, we investigate the arithmetic properties of these coefficients. As an example, we obtain an analog of the Gross-Zagier theorem on singular moduli.
Let $p$ be a prime for which the congruence group $Γ_0(p)^*$ is of genus zero, and $j_p^*$ be the corresponding Hauptmodul. Let $f$ be a nearly holomorphic modular form of weight 1/2 on $Γ_0(4p)$ which satisfies some congruence condition on its Fourier coefficients. We interpret $f$ as a vector valued modular form. Applying Borcherds lifting of vector valued modular forms we construct infinite products associated to $j_p^*$ and extend Zagier's trace formula for singular values of $j_p^*$. Further we investigate the twisted traces of sigular values of $j_p^*$ and construct Borcherds products re…
We classify the holomorphic Borcherds products of singular weight for all simple lattices of signature $(2,n)$ with $n \geq 3$. In addition to the automorphic products of singular weight for the simple lattices of square free level found by Dittmann, Hagemeier and the second author, we obtain several automorphic products of singular weight $1/2$ for simple lattices of signature $(2,3)$. We interpret them as Siegel modular forms of genus $2$ and explicitly describe them in terms of the ten even theta constants. In order to rule out further holomorphic Borcherds products of singular weight, we d…
Bruinier and Ono recently developed the theory of generalized Borcherds products, which uses coefficients of certain Maass forms as exponents in infinite product expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Using this, one can use classical results on congruences of modular forms to obtain congruences for Maass forms. In this note we work out the example of Ramanujan's mock theta functions f and ω in detail.
We prove that there are only finitely many isometry classes of even lattices $L$ of signature $(2,n)$ for which the space of cusp forms of weight $1+n/2$ for the Weil representation of the discriminant group of $L$ is trivial. We compute the list of these lattices. They have the property that every Heegner divisor for the orthogonal group of $L$ can be realized as the divisor of a Borcherds product. We obtain similar classification results in greater generality for finite quadratic modules.
In his striking 1995 paper, Borcherds found an infinite product expansion for certain modular forms with CM divisors. In particular, this applies to the Hilbert class polynomial of discriminant $-d$ evaluated at the modular $j$-function. Among a number of powerful generalizations of Borcherds' work, Zagier made an analogous statement for twisted versions of this polynomial. He proves that the exponents of these product expansions, $A(n,d)$, are the coefficients of certain special half-integral weight modular forms. We study the congruence properties of $A(n,d)$ modulo a prime $\ell$ by relatin…
For a discrete subgroup of an indefinite unitary group $U(1,n+1)$, $n\geq 1$, consider the attached modular variety. Using local Borcherds products, we study Heegner divisors in the local Picard group over a boundary component the compactified variety. We obtain a criterion for local Heegner divisors to be torsion elements in the local Picard group. As an application, we find that the obstructions for a local Heegner divisor to be a torsion element can be described through spaces of vector valued elliptic cusp forms spanned by certain theta-series.
The Borcherds lift for indefinite unitary groups, previously constructed by the author, is examined here in greater detail for the special case of the group U(1,1). The inputs for the lifting in this case are weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight zero, which are lifted to meromorphic modular forms on the usual complex upper half plane transforming under an arithmetic subgroup of U(1,1). In this setting, we can completely describe the Weyl-chambers involved and explicitly calculate the attached Weyl-vectors, for a family of input functions with principle part $q^{-n}$. Since these are a ba…
We present some applications of the Kudla-Millson and the Millson theta lift. The two lifts map weakly holomorphic modular functions to vector valued harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2$ and $1/2$, respectively. We give finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions $f(q)$ and $ω(q)$ in terms of traces of CM-values of a weakly holomorphic modular function. Further, we construct vector valued harmonic Maass forms whose shadows are unary theta functions, and whose holomorphic parts have rational coefficients. This yields a rationality result for the coefficien…
Quasi-pullback of Borcherds products is an operation of renormalized restriction. It produces a meromorphic modular form on a lower dimensional symmetric domain which is again a Borcherds product. We give an explicit formula for the weakly holomorphic modular form of Weil representation type whose Borcherds lift is the quasi-pullback of the given Borcherds product.
The classical Kronecker limit formula describes the constant term in the Laurent expansion at the first order pole of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to the cusp at infinity of the modular group. Recently, the meromorphic continuation and Kronecker limit type formulas were investigated for non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to hyperbolic and elliptic elements of a Fuchsian group of the first kind by Jorgenson, Kramer and the first named author. In the present work, we realize averaged versions of all three types of Eisenstein series for $Γ_0(N)$ as regularized theta …
In his celebrated 1998 Inventiones paper, Borcherds constructed meromorphic automorphic forms Psi(F) for arithmetic subgroups associated to even integral lattices M of signature (n,2). The input to his construction is a vector valued weakly holomorphic modular form F of weight 1 - n/2, and the resulting Borcherds form has an explicit divisor on the arithmetic quotient X = Gamma_M\ D. Most remarkably, in the neighborhood of each cusp (= rational point boundary component), there is a beautiful product formula for Psi(F), reminiscent of the classical product formula for the Dedekind eta-function.…
The twisted elliptic genera of a $K3$ surface associated with the conjugacy classes of the Mathieu group $M_{24}$ are known to be weak Jacobi forms of weight $0$. In 2010, Cheng constructed formal infinite products from the twisted elliptic genera and conjectured that they define Siegel modular forms of degree two. In this paper we prove that for each conjugacy class of level $N_g$ the associated product is a meromorphic Borcherds product on the lattice $U(N_g)\oplus U \oplus A_1$ in a strict sense. We also compute the divisors of these products and determine for which conjugacy classes the pr…
In this paper we consider several problems in the theory of automorphic products and generalized Kac--Moody algebras proposed by Borcherds in 1995. We show that the denominator of the fake monster algebra defines the unique holomorphic Borcherds product of singular weight on a maximal lattice. We give a full classification of symmetric holomorphic Borcherds products of singular weight on lattices of prime level. Finally we prove that all twisted denominator identities of the fake monster algebra arise as the Fourier expansions of Borcherds products of singular weight at a certain cusp. The pro…
We construct a natural family of rational functions $\tildeΨ_m$ on a Hilbert modular surface from the classical $j$-invariant and its Hecke translates. These functions are obtained by means of a multiplicative analogue of the Doi-Naganuma lifting and can be viewed as twisted Borcherds products. We then study when the value of $\tildeΨ_m$ at a CM point associated to a non-biquadratic quartic CM field generates the `CM class field' of the reflex field. For the real quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{5})$, we factorize the norm of some of these CM values to $\Q(\sqrt 5)$ numerically.
Borcherds lift for an even lattice of signature (p,q) is a lifting from weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight (p-q)/2 for the Weil representation. We introduce a new product operation on the space of such modular forms and develop a basic theory. The product makes this space a finitely generated filtered associative algebra, without unit element and noncommutative in general. This is functorial with respect to embedding of lattices by the quasi-pullback. Moreover, the rational space of modular forms with rational principal part is closed under this product. In some examples with p=2, the …
We study moduli spaces of O'Grady's ten-dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. These moduli spaces are covers of modular varieties of dimension 21, namely quotients of hermitian symmetric domains by a suitable arithmetic group. The interesting and new aspect of this case is that the group in question is strictly bigger than the stable orthogonal group. This makes it different from both the K3 and the K3^[n] case, which are of dimension 19 and 20 respectively.
We extend Borcherds' singular theta lift in signature $(1,2)$ to harmonic Maass forms of weight $1/2$ whose non-holomorphic part is allowed to be of exponential growth at $i\infty$. We determine the singularities of the lift and compute its Fourier expansion. It turns out that the lift is continuous but not differentiable along certain geodesics in the upper half-plane corresponding to the non-holomorphic principal part of the input. As an application, we obtain a generalization to higher level of the weight $2$ modular integral of Duke, Imamoglu and Tóth. Further, we construct automorphic pro…
We prove an arithmetic version of a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier saying that Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors on a Hilbert modular surface are the coefficients of an elliptic modular form of weight two. Moreover, we determine the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of modular forms equipped with its Petersson metric on a regular model of a Hilbert modular surface, and study Faltings heights of arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors.
Recently, Funke and Hofmann constructed a singular theta lift of Borcherds type for the dual reductive pair $U(1,1)\times U(p,q)$, $p,q\geq 1$, the input functions of which are harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $k= 2-p-q$. In the present paper, we give an explicit evaluation of the Fourier-Jacobi expansion of the lift. For this purpose, we adapt a method introduced by Kudla in his paper 'Another product for a Borcherds form'. As an application, in the case $U(p,1)$ we recover a new infinite product expansion associated to a Borcherds form, analogous to the case $O(p,2)$ treated by Kudla.
We use Borcherds products and their restrictions to Hirzebruch-Zagier curves to determine generators and relations for the graded rings of Hilbert modular forms for the fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{29})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{37})$. These seem to be the first cases where the graded ring can be computed despite obstructions to the existence of Borcherds products with arbitrary divisors.
The goal of this paper is to construct infinite dimensional Lie algebras using infinite product identities, and to use these Lie algebras to reduce the generalized moonshine conjecture to a pair of hypotheses about group actions on vertex algebras and Lie algebras. The Lie algebras that we construct conjecturally appear in an orbifold conformal field theory with symmetries given by the monster simple group. We introduce vector-valued modular functions attached to families of modular functions of different levels, and we prove infinite product identities for a distinguished class of automorphic…
We define an algebraic set in $23$~dimensional projective space whose $\mathbb Q$-rational points correspond to meromorphic, antisymmetric, paramodular Borcherds products. We know two lines inside this algebraic set. Some rational points on these lines give holomorphic Borcherds products and thus construct examples of Siegel modular forms on degree two paramodular groups. Weight $3$ examples provide antisymmetric canonical differential forms on Siegel modular threefolds. Weight $2$ is the minimal weight and these examples, via the Paramodular Conjecture, give evidence for the modularity of som…
We continue our study of algebraic properties of N=4 topological amplitudes in heterotic string theory compactified on T^2, initiated in arXiv:1102.1821. In this work we evaluate a particular one-loop amplitude for any enhanced gauge group h \subset e_8 + e_8, i.e. for arbitrary choice of Wilson line moduli. We show that a certain analytic part of the result has an infinite product representation, where the product is taken over the positive roots of a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra g^{++}. The latter is obtained through double extension of the complement g= (e_8 + e_8)/h. The infinite product i…
We consider the Kudla-Millson lift from elliptic modular forms of weight (p+q)/2 to closed q-forms on locally symmetric spaces corresponding to the orthogonal group O(p,q). We study the L^2-norm of the lift following the Rallis inner product formula. We compute the contribution at the Archimedian place. For locally symmetric spaces associated to even unimodular lattices, we obtain an explicit formula for the L^2-norm of the lift, which often implies that the lift is injective. For O(p,2) we discuss how such injectivity results imply the surjectivity of the Borcherds lift.
Cheng constructed product expansions from twists of elliptic genera of symmetric powers of K3 surfaces that are related to M_24 moonshine. We study which of them are Siegel modular forms. If the predicted level is non-composite, they are modular, and their powers can be represented as products of rescaled Borcherds products.
In this article, we discuss the relation between Kac-Moody algebras, the monstrous moonshine, Jacobi forms and infinite products. We also review Borcherds' solution of the Moonshine Conjecture and his work of constructing automorphic forms on the orthogonal group which can be written as infinite products.
We give an introduction to the theory of Borcherds products and to some number theoretic and geometric applications. In particular, we discuss how the theory can be used to study the geometry of Hilbert modular surfaces.
The theta-block conjecture proposed by Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen in 2013 characterizes Siegel paramodular forms which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for two new infinite series of theta blocks of weights 2 and 3. The proof is based on Scheithauer's classification of reflective modular forms of singular weight.
We classify the simple even lattices of square free level and signature (2,n) for n > 3. A lattice is called simple if the space of cusp forms of weight 1+n/2 for the dual Weil representation of the lattice is trivial. For a simple lattice every formal principal part obeying obvious conditions is the principal part of a vector valued modular form. Using this, we determine all holomorphic Borcherds products of singular weight (arising from vector valued modular forms with non-negative principal part) for the simple lattices. We construct the corresponding vector valued modular forms by eta prod…
We prove a general result relating the shape of the Euler product of an $L$-function to the analytic properties of certain linear twists of the $L$-function itself. Then, by a sharp form of the transformation formula for linear twists, we check the required analytic properties in the case of $L$-functions of degree 2 and conductor 1 in the Selberg class. Finally we prove a converse theorem, showing that $ζ(s)^2$ is the only member of the Selberg class satisfying the above conditions and, moreover, having a pole at $s=1$.
Associated to a newform $f(z)$ is a Dirichlet series $L_f(s)$ with functional equation and Euler product. Hecke showed that if the Dirichlet series $F(s)$ has a functional equation of a particular form, then $F(s)=L_f(s)$ for some holomorphic newform $f(z)$ on $Γ(1)$. Weil extended this result to $Γ_0(N)$ under an assumption on the twists of $F(s)$ by Dirichlet characters. Conrey and Farmer extended Hecke's result for certain small $N$, assuming that the local factors in the Euler product of $F(s)$ were of a special form. We make the same assumption on the Euler product and describe an approac…
In his Inventiones papers in 1995 and 1998, Borcherds constructed holomorphic automorphic forms $Ψ(F)$ with product expansions on bounded domains $D$ associated to rational quadratic spaces $V$ of signature (n,2). The input $F$ for his construction is a vector valued modular form of weight $1-n/2$ for $SL_2(Z)$ which is allowed to have a pole at the cusp and whose non-positive Fourier coefficients are integers $c_μ(-m)$, $m\ge0$. For example, the divisor of $Ψ(F)$ is the sum over $m>0$ and the coset parameter $μ$ of $c_μ(-m) Z_μ(m)$ for certain rational quadratic divisors $Z_μ(m)$ on the arith…
In this paper we construct an infinite family of paramodular forms of weight $2$ which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. This proves an important part of the theta-block conjecture of Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen (2013) related to the only known infinite series of theta-blocks of weight $2$ and $q$-order $1$. We also consider some applications of this result.
We formulate a precise conjecture that, if true, extends the converse theorem of Hecke without requiring hypotheses on twists by Dirichlet characters or an Euler product. The main idea is to linearize the Euler product, replacing it by twists by Ramanujan sums. We provide evidence for the conjecture, including proofs of some special cases and under various additional hypotheses.
Given a prime p and a positive integer m satisfying a certain inequality, the converse of Wolstenholme's Theorem is shown to hold for the product mp^k where k is any positive integer, generalizing a result by Helou and Terjanian.
We study the algebras of modular forms on type IV symmetric domains for simple lattices; that is, lattices for which every Heegner divisor occurs as the divisor of a Borcherds product. For every simple lattice $L$ of signature $(n,2)$ with $3\leq n \leq 10$, we prove that the graded algebra of modular forms for the maximal reflection subgroup of the orthogonal group of $L$ is freely generated. We also show that, with five exceptions, the graded algebra of modular forms for the maximal reflection subgroup of the discriminant kernel of $L$ is also freely generated.
We describe a relationship between the representation theory of the Thompson sporadic group and a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight one-half that appears in work of Borcherds and Zagier on Borcherds products and traces of singular moduli. We conjecture the existence of an infinite dimensional graded module for the Thompson group and provide evidence for our conjecture by constructing McKay--Thompson series for each conjugacy class of the Thompson group that coincide with weight one-half modular forms of higher level. We also observe a discriminant property in this moonshine for the Tho…
We prove that a Dirichlet series with a functional equation and Euler product of a particular form can only arise from a holomorphic cusp form on the Hecke congruence group $Γ_0(13)$. The proof does not assume a functional equation for the twists of the Dirichlet series. The main new ingredient is a generalization of the familiar Weil's lemma that played a prominent role in previous converse theorems.
We prove a converse theorem for a family of L functions of degree 2 with gamma factor coming from a holomorphic cuspform. We show these L functions coincide with either those coming from a newform or a product of L functions arising from Dirichlet characters. We require some analytic data on the Euler factors, but don't require anything on the shape. We also suppose that the twisted L functions satisfy expected functional equations. We allow the non-trivial twists to have arbitrary poles.
