In this note we revisit a less known symmetrization method for functions with respect to a topological group $G$, which we call $G$-averaging. We note that, although quite non-technical in nature, this method yields $G$-invariant minimizers of functionals satisfying some relaxed convexity properties. We give an abstract theorem and show how it can be applied to the $p$-Laplace and polyharmonic Poisson problem in order to construct symmetric solutions. We also pose some open problems and explore further possibilities where the method of $G$-averaging could be applied to.
We consider the minimization of a p-Ginzburg-Landau energy functional over the class of radially symmetric functions of degree one. We prove the existence of a unique minimizer in this class, and show that its modulus is monotone increasing and concave. We also study the asymptotic limit of the minimizers as p \rightarrow \infty. Finally, we prove that the radially symmetric solution is locally stable for $p$ in the interval $(2,4]$.
We establish general assumptions under which a constrained vari- ational problem involving the fractional gradient and a local nonlin- earity admits minimizers.
We investigate the existence of solutions to viscous ergodic Mean Field Games systems in bounded domains with Neumann boundary conditions and local, possibly aggregative couplings. In particular we exploit the associated variational structure and search for constrained minimizers of a suitable functional. Depending on the growth of the coupling, we detect the existence of global minimizers in the mass subcritical and critical case, and of local minimizers in the mass supercritical case, notably up to the Sobolev critical case.
We consider the minimizing problem for the energy functional with prescribed mass constraint related to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic potentials. Using the concentration-compactness principle, we show a complete classification for the existence and non-existence of minimizers for the problem. In the mass-critical case, under a suitable assumption of the potential, we give a detailed description of blow-up behavior of minimizers once the mass tends to a critical value.
We consider the variational formulation of the Griffith fracture model in two spatial dimensions and prove existence of strong minimizers, that is deformation fields which are continuously differentiable outside a closed jump set and which minimize the relevant energy. To this aim, we show that minimizers of the weak formulation of the problem, set in the function space $SBD^2$ and for which existence is well-known, are actually strong minimizers following the approach developed by De Giorgi, Carriero, and Leaci in the corresponding scalar setting of the Mumford-Shah problem.
In this paper the existence of an absolute minimizer for a functional \[ F(u,Ω) = \underset{x \in Ω}{\text{ess sup}} \, f (x, u(x), Du(x)) \] is proved by using Perron's method. The function is assumed to be quasiconvex and uniformly coercive. This completes the result by Champion, De Pascale and Prinari.
We study static 180 degree domain walls in infinite magnetic wires with bounded, $C^1$ and rotationally symmetric cross sections. We prove an existence of global minimizers for the energy of micromagnetics for any bounded $C^1$ cross sections. Under some asymmetry of cross sections we prove a stability result for the minimizers, namely, we show that vectors of micromagnetics having an energy close to the minimal one, must be $H^1$ close to a minimizer of the limiting energy up to a rotation and a translation.
In this paper we consider minimizers for nonlocal energy functionals generalizing elastic energies that are connected with the theory of peridynamics \cite{Silling2000} or nonlocal diffusion models \cite{Rossi}. We derive nonlocal versions of the Euler-Lagrange equations under two sets of growth assumptions for the integrand. Existence of minimizers is shown for integrands with joint convexity (in the function and nonlocal gradient components). By using the convolution structure we show regularity of solutions for certain Euler-Lagrange equations. No growth assumptions are needed for the exist…
We study $H^1$ versus $C^1$ local minimizers for functionals defined on spaces of symmetric functions, namely functions that are invariant by the action of some subgroups of $\mathcal{O}(N)$. These functionals, in many cases, are associated with some elliptic partial differential equations that may have supercritical growth. So we also prove some results on classical regularity for symmetric weak solutions for a general class of semilinear elliptic equations with possibly supercritical growth. We then apply these results to prove the existence of a large number of classical positive symmetric …
Let $\mathcal{D} =Ω\setminus\barω \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a smooth annular type domain. We consider the simplified Ginzburg-Landau energy $E_ε(u)=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathcal{D}} |\nabla u|^2 +\frac{1}{4ε^2}\int_{\mathcal{D}} (1-|u|^2)^2$, where $u: \mathcal{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, and look for minimizers of $E_ε$ with prescribed degrees $deg(u,\partial Ω)=p$, $deg(u,\partial ω)=q$ on the boundaries of the domain. For large $ε$ and for balanced degrees, i.e., $p=q$, we obtain existence of minimizers for {\it thin} domain. We also prove non-existence of minimizers of $E_ε$, for large $ε$, in …
We study existence of minimizers of the general least gradient problem \[\inf_{u \in BV_f} \int_Ωφ(x,Du),\] where $BV_f=\{u \in BV(Ω): \ \ u|_{\partial Ω}=f\}$, $f\in L^{1}(\partial Ω)$, and $φ(x,ξ)$ is convex, continuous, and homogeneous function of degree $1$ with respect to the $ξ$ variable. It is proven that there exists a divergence free vector field $T\in (L^{\infty}(Ω))^n$ that determines the structure of level sets of all (possible) minimizers, i.e. $T$ determines $\frac{Du}{|Du|}$, $|Du|-$ a.e. in $Ω$, for all minimizers $u$. We also prove that every minimizer of the above least gradi…
This paper is concerned with the variational problem for the elastic energy defined on symmetric graphs under the unilateral constraint. Assuming that the obstacle function satisfies the symmetric cone condition, we prove (i) uniqueness of minimizers, (ii) loss of regularity of minimizers, and give (iii) complete classification of existence and non-existence of minimizers in terms of the size of obstacle. As an application, we characterize the solution of the obstacle problem as equilibrium of the corresponding dynamical problem.
We prove the existence of non-trivial global minimizers of a class of free energies related to aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion on $\Real^d$. Such equations arise in mathematical biology as models for organism group dynamics which account for competition between the tendency to aggregate into groups and nonlinear diffusion to avoid over-crowding. The existence of non-zero optimal free energy stationary solutions representing coherent groups in $\Real^d$ is therefore of interest. The primary contribution is the investigation of a notion of criticality associated with the global m…
In this article, we consider and analyse a small variant of a functional originally introduced in \cite{BLS,LS} to approximate the (geometric) planar Steiner problem. This functional depends on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ and resembles the (scalar) Ginzburg-Landau functional from phase transitions. In a first part, we prove existence and regularity of minimizers for this functional. Then we provide a detailed analysis of their behavior as $\varepsilon\to0$, showing in particular that sublevel sets Hausdorff converge to optimal Steiner sets. Applications to the average distance problem an…
We prove a compactness principle for the anisotropic formulation of the Plateau problem in any codimension, in the same spirit of the previous works of the authors \cite{DelGhiMag,DePDeRGhi,DeLDeRGhi16}. In particular, we perform a new strategy for the proof of the rectifiability of the minimal set, based on the new anisotropic counterpart of the Allard rectifiability theorem proved by the authors in \cite{DePDeRGhi2}. As a consequence we provide a new proof of Reifenberg existence theorem.
We perform the classical Ginzburg-Landau analysis originated from the celebrated paper by Bethuel, Brezis, Hélein for optimal boundary data. More precisely, we give optimal regularity assumptions on the boundary curve of planar domains and Dirichlet boundary data on them. When the Dirichlet boundary data is the tangent vector field of the boundary curve, our framework allows us to define a natural energy minimizing frame for simply connected domains enclosing Weil-Petersson curves.
This paper deals with the eigenvalue problem for the operator $L=-Δ-x\cdot \nabla $ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We are interested in proving the existence of a set minimizing any eigenvalue $λ_k$ of $L$ under a suitable measure constraint suggested by the structure of the operator. More precisely we prove that for any $c>0$ and $k\in \mathbb{N} $ the following minimization problem $$ \min\left\{λ_k(Ω): \> Ω\>\mbox{quasi-open} \>\mbox{set}, \> \int_Ωe^{|x|^2/2}dx\le c\right\} $$ has a solution.
We consider the Griffith fracture model in two spatial dimensions, and prove existence of strong minimizers, with closed jump set and continuously differentiable deformation fields. One key ingredient, which is the object of the present paper, is a generalization of the decay estimate by De Giorgi, Carriero, and Leaci to the vectorial situation. This is based on replacing the coarea formula by a method to approximate $SBD^p$ functions with small jump set by Sobolev functions and is restricted to two dimensions. The other two ingredients are contained in companion papers and consist respectivel…
The paper is concerned with the geometrically non-linear theory of 6-parametric elastic shells with drilling degrees of freedom. This theory establishes a general model for shells, which is characterized by two independent kinematic fields: the translation vector and the rotation tensor. Thus, the kinematical structure of 6-parameter shells is identical to that of Cosserat shells. We show the existence of global minimizers for the geometrically non-linear 2D equations of elastic shells. The proof of the existence theorem is based on the direct methods of the calculus of variations using essent…
In this paper, we are concerned with the existence and asymptotic behavior of minimizers for a minimization problem related to some quasilinear elliptic equations. Firstly, we proved that there exist minimizers when the exponent $q$ equals to the critical case $q^*=2+\frac{4}{N}$, which is different from that of \cite{cjs}. Then, we proved that all minimizers are compact as $q$ tends to the critical case $q^*$ when $a<a^*$ is fixed. Moreover, we studied the concentration behavior of minimizers as the exponent $q$ tends to the critical case $q^*$ for any fixed $a>a^*$.
In this paper we study the existence and non-existence of minimizers for a type of (critical) Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities. We show that minimizers do exist for smooth domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$, an also for some polyhedral domains. On the other hand, we prove the non-existence of minimizers in the rectangular isosceles triangle in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
In this paper we prove that the shape optimization problem $$\min\left\{λ_k(Ω):\ Ω\subset\R^d,\ Ω \hbox{open},\ P(Ω)=1,\ |Ω|<+\infty\right\},$$ has a solution for any $k\in\N$ and dimension $d$. Moreover, every solution is a bounded connected open set with boundary which is $C^{1,α}$ outside a closed set of Hausdorff dimension $d-8$. Our results are more general and apply to spectral functionals of the form $f(λ_{k_1}(Ω),\dots,λ_{k_p}(Ω))$, for increasing functions $f$ satisfying some suitable bi-Lipschitz type condition.
We study entire minimizers of the Allen-Cahn systems. The specific feature of our systems are potentials having a finite number of global minima, with sub-quadratic behaviour locally near their minima. The corresponding formal Euler-Lagrange equations are supplemented with free boundaries. We do not study regularity issues but focus on qualitative aspects. We show the existence of entire solutions in an equivariant setting connecting the minima of $ W $ at infinity, thus modeling many coexisting phases, possessing free boundaries and minimizing energy in the symmetry class. We also present a v…
We consider the minimization problem of the functional given by the sum of the fractional perimeter and a general Riesz potential, which is one generalization of Gamow's liquid drop model. We first show the existence of minimizers for any volumes if the kernel of the Riesz potential decays faster than that of the fractional perimeter. Secondly, we show the existence of generalized minimizers for any volumes if the kernel of the Riesz potential just vanishes at infinity. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers when the volume goes to infinity and we prove that a sequence of mini…
The Landau-de Gennes energy in nematic liquid crystals depends on four elastic constants $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$. In the case of $L_4\neq 0$, Ball and Majumdar (Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst., 2010) found an example that the original Landau-de Gennes energy functional in physics does not satisfy a coercivity condition, which causes a problem in mathematics to establish existence of energy minimizers. At first, we introduce a new Landau-de Gennes energy density with $L_4\neq 0$, which is equivalent to the original Landau-de Gennes density for uniaxial tensors and satisfies the coercivity condition …
In this paper, we study the existence of minimizers for a class of constrained minimization problems derived from the Schrödinger-Poisson equations: $$-Δu+V(x)u+(|x|^{-1}*u^2)u-|u|^\frac{4}{3}u=λu,~~x\in\R^3$$ on the $L^2$-spheres $\widetilde{S}(c)=\{u\in H^1(\R^3)|~\int_{\R^3}V(x)u^2dx<+\infty,~|u|_2^2=c>0\}$. If $V(x)\equiv0$, then by a different method from Jeanjean and Luo [Z. Angrew. Math. Phys. 64 (2013), 937-954], we show that there is no minimizer for all $c>0$; If $0\leq V(x)\in L^{\infty}_{loc}(\R^3)$ and $\lim\limits_{|x|\rightarrow+\infty}V(x)=+\infty$, then a minimizer exists if a…
Existence and regularity of minimizers for a geometric variational problem is shown. The variational integral models an energy contribution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in the presence of surfactants and includes a Helfrich type contribution, a Frank type contribution and a coupling term between the orientation of the surfactants and the curvature of the interface. Analytical results are proven in a one--dimensional situation for curves.
The paper studies the existence of minimizers for Rayleigh quotients $μ_Ω=\inf\frac{\int_Ω|\nabla u|^2}{\int_ΩV{|u|^2}} $, where $Ω$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and $V$ is a nonzero nonnegative function that may have singularities on $\partialΩ$. As a model for our results one can take $Ω$ to be a Lipschitz cone and $V$ to be the Hardy potential $V(x)=\frac{1}{|x|^2} $.
The Cahn-Hilliard energy landscape on the torus is explored in the critical regime of large system size and mean value close to $-1$. Existence and properties of a "droplet-shaped" local energy minimizer are established. A standard mountain pass argument leads to the existence of a saddle point whose energy is equal to the energy barrier, for which a quantitative bound is deduced. In addition, finer properties of the local minimizer and appropriately defined constrained minimizers are deduced. The proofs employ the $Γ$-limit (identified in a previous work), quantitative isoperimetric inequalit…
We characterize the volume-constrained minimizers of a nonlocal free energy given by the difference of the $t$-perimeter and the $s$-perimeter, with $s$ smaller than $t$. Exploiting the quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality, we show that balls are the unique minimizers if the volume is sufficiently small, depending on $t-s$, while the existence vs. nonexistence of minimizers for large volumes remains open. We also consider the corresponding isoperimetric problem and prove existence and regularity of minimizers for all $s,\,t$. When $s=0$ this problem reduces to the fractional isoper…
We analyze the topological structure of the Nehari set for a class of functionals depending on a real parameter $λ$, and having two degrees of homogeneity. A special attention is paid to the extremal parameter $λ^*$, which is the threshold value for the Nehari set to be given by a {\it natural constraint}. The main difficulty arises when $λ>λ^*$, as the energy functional may be unbounded from below over the Nehari set. In such situation we prove the existence of local minimizers of the functional constrained to this set. We unify and extend previous existence and multiplicity results for criti…
Deformation microstructure is studied for a 1D-shear problem in geometrically nonlinear Cosserat elasticity. Microstructure solutions are described analytically and numerically for zero characteristic length scale.
Fluid flows around a symmetric obstacle generate vortices which may lead to symmetry breaking of the streamlines. We study this phenomenon for planar viscous flows governed by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations with constant inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary data in a rectangular channel containing a circular obstacle. In such (symmetric) framework, symmetry breaking is strictly related to the appearance of multiple solutions. Symmetry breaking properties of some Sobolev minimizers are studied and explicit bounds on the boundary velocity (in terms of the length and height of the channel) en…
We study an isoperimetric problem described by a functional that consists of the standard Gaussian perimeter and the norm of the barycenter. This second term has a repulsive effect, and it is in competition with the perimeter. Because of that, in general the solution is not the half-space. We characterize all the minimizers of this functional, when the volume is close to one, by proving that the minimizer is either the half-space or the symmetric strip, depending on the strength of the repulsive term. As a corollary, we obtain that the symmetric strip is the solution of the Gaussian isoperimet…
We continue the analysis of some modifications of the total variation image inpainting method formulated on the space $BV(Ω)^M$ in the sense that we generalize the main results of [32] to the case that a more general data fitting term is involved. As in [32] we deal with vector-valued images, we do not impose any structure condition on our density $F$ and the dimension of the domain $Ω$ is arbitrary. Precisely we discuss existence of generalized solutions of the corresponding variational problem and we will also pass to the associated dual variational problem for which we show unique solvabili…
In this paper we prove symmetry results for minimizers of a non coercive functional defined on the class of Sobolev functions with zero mean value. We prove that the minimizers are foliated Schwarz symmetric, i.e. they are axially symmetric with respect to an axis passing through the origin and nonincreasing in the polar angle from this axis. In the two dimensional case we show a symmetry breaking.
We prove a threshold phenomenon for the existence of solitary solutions of the dispersion management equation for positive and zero average dispersion for a large class of nonlinearities. These solutions are found as minimizers of nonlinear and nonlocal variational problems which are invariant under a large non-compact group. There exists a threshold such that minimizers exist when the power of the solitons is bigger than the threshold. Our proof of existence of minimizers is rather direct and avoids the use of Lions' concentration compactness argument. The existence of dispersion managed soli…
We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.
In this paper, we prove the existence of minimizers of a class of multi-constrained variational problems. We consider systems involving a nonlinearity that does not satisfy compactness, monotonicity, neither symmetry properties. Our approach hinges on the concentration-compactness approach. In the second part, we will treat orthogonal constrained problems for another class of integrands using density matrices method.
We study in detail the existence, nonexistence and behavior of global minimizers, ground states and corresponding energy levels of the $(p,q)$-Laplace equation $-Δ_p u -Δ_q u = α|u|^{p-2}u + β|u|^{q-2}u$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ under zero Dirichlet boundary condition, where $p > q > 1$ and $α, β\in \mathbb{R}$. A curve on the $(α,β)$-plane which allocates a set of the existence of ground states and the multiplicity of positive solutions is constructed. Additionally, we show that eigenfunctions of the $p$- and $q$-Laplacians under zero Dirichlet boundary condition are linear…
The aim of the present paper is to study existence results of minimizers of the critical fractional Sobolev constant on bounded domains. Under some values of the fractional parameter we show that the best constant is achieved. If moreover the underlying domain is a ball, we obtain positive radial minimizers for all possible values of the fractional parameter in higher dimension, while we impose a positive mass condition in low dimension.
In \cite{CHMY04}, we studied $p$-mean curvature and the associated $p$-minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group from the viewpoint of PDE and differential geometry. In this paper, we look into the problem through the variational formulation. We study a generalized $p$-area and associated ($p$-) minimizers in general dimensions. We prove the existence and investigate the uniqueness of minimizers. Since this is reduced to solving a degenerate elliptic equation, we need to consider the effect of the singular set and this requires a careful study. We define the notion of weak solution and prove th…
The ancient Gamow liquid drop model of nuclear energies has had a renewed life as an interesting problem in the calculus of variations: Find a set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^3$ with given volume A that minimizes the sum of its surface area and its Coulomb self energy. A ball minimizes the former and maximizes the latter, but the conjecture is that a ball is always a minimizer -- when there is a minimizer. Even the existence of minimizers for this interesting geometric problem has not been shown in general. We prove the existence of the absolute minimizer (over all $A$) of the energy divided by $A$ (t…
We consider semi-stable, radially symmetric, and decreasing solutions of a reaction equation involving the p-Laplacian, where the reaction term is a locally Lipschitz function, and the domain is the unit ball. For this class of radial solutions, which includes local minimizers, we establish pointwise and Sobolev estimates which are optimal and do not depend on the specific nonlinear reaction term. Under standard assumptions we also prove the regularity of the corresponding extremal solution.
