In this note we show Ahlfors-regularity for a large class of quasiminimizers of the Griffith functional. This allows us to prove that, for a range of free discontinuity problems in linear elasticity with anisotropic, cohesive, or heterogeneous behavior, minimizers have an essentially closed jump set and are thus strong minimizers. Our notion of quasiminimality is inspired by and generalizes previous notions in the literature for the Mumford-Shah functional, and comprises functions which locally close to the crack have at most a fixed percentage of excess crack relative to minimizers. As for the case of minimizers of the Griffith functional, our proof of Ahlfors-regularity relies on contradiction-compactness and an approximation result for GSBD functions, showing the robustness of this approach with respect to generalization of bulk and surface densities.
We analyze the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of correspondin…
We show existence of solutions for the equations of static atomistic nonlinear elasticity theory on a bounded domain with prescribed boundary values. We also show their convergence to the solutions of continuum nonlinear elasticity theory, with energy density given by the Cauchy-Born rule, as the interatomic distances tend to zero. These results hold for small data close to a stable lattice for general finite range interaction potentials. We also discuss the notion of stability in detail.
We consider a model for deformations of a homogeneous isotropic body, whose shear modulus remains constant, but its bulk modulus can be a highly nonlinear function. We show that for a general class of such models, in an arbitrary space dimension, the respective PDE problem has a unique solution. Moreover, this solution enjoys interior smoothness. This is the first regularity result for elasticity problems that covers the most natural space dimension $3$ and that captures behaviour of many typical elastic materials (considered in the small deformations) like rubber, polymer gels or concrete.
In this paper we study obstacles immerged in a Stokes flow with Navier boundary conditions. We prove the existence and regularity of an obstacle with minimal drag, among all shapes of prescribed volume and controlled surface area, taking into account that these shapes may naturally develop geometric features of codimension 1. The existence is carried out in the framework of free discontinuity problems and leads to a relaxed solution in the space of special functions of bounded deformation (SBD). In dimension 2, we prove that the solution is classical.
In this paper, by using the theory of compensated compactness coupled with the kinetic formulation by Lions, Perthame, Souganidis and Tadmor \cite{LPT,LPS}, we prove the existence and nonexistence of global generalized (nonnegative) solutions of the nonlinearly degenerate wave equations $v_{tt} =c (|v|^{s-1} v)_{xx}$ with the nonnegative initial data $v_{0}(x)$ and $ s > 1$. This result is an extension of the results in the second author's paper \cite{Su}, where the existence and the nonexistence of the unique global classical solution were studied with a threshold on $\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} …
A typical phase field approach for describing phase separation and coarsening phenomena in alloys is the Cahn-Hilliard model. This model has been generalized to the so-called Cahn-Larché system by combining it with elasticity to capture non-neglecting deformation phenomena, which occur during phase separation and coarsening processes in the material. In order to account for damage effects, we extend the existing framework of Cahn-Hilliard and Cahn-Larché systems by incorporating an internal damage variable of local character. This damage variable allows to model the effect that damage of a mat…
In this paper we study the stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals. Assuming stationarity for the random volume and surface integrands, we prove the existence of a homogenised random free-discontinuity functional, which is deterministic in the ergodic case. Moreover, by establishing a connection between the deterministic convergence of the functionals at any fixed realisation and the pointwise Subadditive Ergodic Theorem by Akcoglou and Krengel, we characterise the limit volume and surface integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas.
We prove the local-in-time existence of solutions with a contact discontinuity of the equations of ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for 2D planar flows provided that the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial p/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity. MHD contact discontinuities are characteristic discontinuities with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the magnetic field and the velocity are continuous whereas the density and the entropy may have a jump. This paper is a nat…
This paper is concerned with the existence and the stability of travelling wave solutions to a bistable reaction-diffusion equation with a jump discontinuious point on nonlinear term. Sub-super solution method is used throughout this paper. As a matter of fact, this nonlinear discontinuity term is frequently emerging when study the travelling wave solution of reaction-diffusion-ODE systems. Hence, it is meaningful to consider this kind of problem.

We establish short-time existence of a smooth solution to the surface diffusion equation with an elastic term and without an additional curvature regularization in three space dimensions. We also prove the asymptotic stability of strictly stable stationary sets.
Extending investigations of Antman & Malek-Madani, Schecter & Shearer, Slemrod, Barker & Lewicka & Zumbrun, and others, we investigate phase-transitional elasticity models of strain-gradient effect. We prove the existence of non-constant planar periodic standing waves in these models with strain-gradient effects by variational methods and phase-plane analysis, for deformations of arbitrary dimension and general, physical, viscosity and strain-gradient terms. Previous investigations considered one-dimensional phenomenological models with artificial viscosity/strain gradient effect, for which th…
In this paper, we prove a new existence result for a variational model of crack growth in brittle materials proposed in [15]. We consider the case of $n$-dimensional finite elasticity, for an arbitrary $n\ge1$, with a quasiconvex bulk energy and with prescribed boundary deformations and applied loads, both depending on time.
In this paper we prove short-time existence of a smooth solution in the plane to the surface diffusion equation with an elastic term and without an additional curvature regularization. We also prove the asymptotic stability of strictly stable stationary sets.
We show the existence of quasistatic evolutions in a fracture model for brittle materials by a vanishing viscosity approach, in the setting of planar linearized elasticity. The crack is not prescribed a priori and is selected in a class of (unions of) regular curves. To prove the result, it is crucial to analyze the properties of the energy release rate.
Deformation microstructure is studied for a 1D-shear problem in geometrically nonlinear Cosserat elasticity. Microstructure solutions are described analytically and numerically for zero characteristic length scale.
We prove existence and uniqueness for solutions to equilibrium problems for free-standing, traction-free, non homogeneous crystals in the presence of plastic slips. Moreover we prove that this class of problems is closed under G-convergence of the operators. In particular the homogenization procedure, valid for elliptic systems in linear elasticity, depicts the macroscopic features of a composite material in the presence of plastic deformation.
This article develops duality principles applicable to the Ginzburg-Landau system in superconductivity. The main results are obtained through standard tools of convex analysis, functional analysis, calculus of variations and duality theory. In the second section, we present the general result for the case including a magnetic field and the respective magnetic potential in a local extremal context. Finally, in the last section we develop some global existence results for a model in elasticity.
We extend to finite elasticity the Data-Driven formulation of geometrically linear elasticity presented in Conti, Müller, Ortiz, Arch.\ Ration.\ Mech.\ Anal.\ 229, 79-123, 2018. The main focus of this paper concerns the formulation of a suitable framework in which the Data-Driven problem of finite elasticity is well-posed in the sense of existence of solutions. We confine attention to deformation gradients $F \in L^p(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$ and first Piola-Kirchhoff stresses $P \in L^q(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$, with $(p,q)\in(1,\infty)$ and $1/p+1/q=1$. We assume that the material behavio…
For calculating large deformations in finite elasticity, we have proposed a method of successive linear approximation, by considering the relative descriptional formulation. In this article we briefly describe this method and we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for boundary value problems for nearly incompressible Mooney-Rivlin materials, that arise in each step of the method.
The evolution equation derived by Xiang (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 63:241--258, 2002) to describe vicinal surfaces in heteroepitaxial growth is $$ h_t=-\left[ H(h_x)+\left(h_x^{-1}+h_x \right) h_{xx}\right]_{xx}, $$ where $h$ denotes the surface height of the film, and $H$ is the Hilbert transform. Existence of solutions was obtained by Dal Maso, Fonseca and Leoni (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 212: 1037--1064, 2014). The regularity in time was left unresolved. The aim of this paper is to prove existence, uniqueness, and Lipschitz regularity in time for weak solutions, under suitable assumptions on the…
The aim of this paper is to prove existence of weak solutions of hyperbolic-parabolic evolution inclusions defined on Lipschitz domains with mixed boundary conditions describing, for instance, damage processes and elasticity with inertia terms. To this end, a suitable weak formulation to deal with such evolution inclusions in a non-smooth setting is presented. Then, existence of weak solutions is proven by utilizing time-discretization, $H^2$-regularization of the displacement variable and variational techniques from [C. Heinemann, C. Kraus: Existence results of weak solutions for Cahn-Hilliar…
We study the free boundary problem for a contact discontinuity for the system of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. A surface of contact discontinuity is a characteristic of this system with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the velocity and the magnetic field are continuous whereas the density, the entropy and the temperature may have a jump. For the two-dimensional case, we prove the local-in-time existence in Sobolev spaces of a unique solution of the free boundary problem provided that the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the jump of the normal derivative of the pr…
In this work we study the evolution of the interface between two different fluids in a porous media with two different permeabilities. We prove local existence in Sobolev spaces, when the free boundary is given by the discontinuity among the densities and viscosities of the fluids.
The paper is concerned with the free boundary problem for 2D current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics near the transition point between the linearized stability and instability. In order to study the dynamics of the discontinuity near the onset of the instability, Hunter and Thoo have introduced an asymptotic quadratically nonlinear integro-differential equation for the amplitude of small perturbations of the planar discontinuity. The local-in-time existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for such amplitude equation was already proven, under a suitable sta…
A new formulation of boundary value problems in gradient elasticity is presented in this work. The main outcome is the construction of partial differential systems of second order, which are typically equivalent with the well known fourth order equation of gradient elasticity. Two alternative methodologies are developed and presented in the present work. The first approach is based on the framework of the pseudo-differential calculus and exploits the special characteristics of this approach to deal with the non local behavior of gradient elasticity. The second implementation is purely differen…
A model problem of magneto-elastic body is considered. Specifically, the case of a two dimensional circular disk is studied. The functional which represents the magneto-elastic energy is introduced. Then, the minimisation problem, referring to the simplified two-dimensional model under investigation, is analysed. The existence of a minimiser is proved and its dependence on the eigenvalues of the problem is investigated. A bifurcation result is obtained corresponding to special values of the parameters.
We prove partial regularity for minimizers to elasticity type energies in the nonlinear framework {with $p$-growth, $p>1$,} in dimension $n\geq 3$. It is an open problem in such a setting either to establish full regularity or to provide counterexamples. In particular, we give an estimate on the Hausdorff dimension of the potential singular set by proving that is strictly less than {$n-(p^*\wedge 2)$, and actually $n-2$ in the autonomous case} (full regularity is well-known in dimension $2$). The latter result is instrumental to establish existence for the strong formulation of Griffith type m…
In this article we discuss quantitative properties of convex integration solutions arising in problems modeling shape-memory materials. For a two-dimensional, geometrically linearized model case, the hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation, we prove the existence of convex integration solutions $u$ with higher Sobolev regularity, i.e. there exists $θ_0>0$ such that $\nabla u \in W^{s,p}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s\in(0,1)$, $p\in(1,\infty)$ with $0<sp < θ_0$. We also recall a construction, which shows that in situations with additional symmetry much better regula…
We study the problem of minimizing the functional $$ I(φ)=\int\limits_Ω W(x,Dφ)\,dx $$ on a new class of mappings. We relax summability conditions for admissible deformations to $φ\in W^1_n(Ω)$ and growth conditions on the integrand $W(x,F)$. To compensate for that, we impose the finite distortion condition and the condition $\frac{|Dφ(x)|^n}{J(x,φ)} \leq M(x) \in L_{s}(Ω)$, $s>n-1$, on the characteristic of distortion. On assuming that the integrand $W(x,F)$ is polyconvex and coercive, we obtain an~existence theorem for the problem of minimizing the functional $I(φ)$ on a new family of admiss…
We cope with a free boundary fluid-structure interaction model. In the model, the viscous incompressible fluid interacts with elastic body via the common boundary. The motion of the fluid is governed by Navier-Stokes equations while the displacement of elastic structure is described by variable coefficient wave equations. The dissipation is placed on the common boundary between fluid and elastic body. Given small initial data, the global existence of the solutions of this system is proved and the exponential decay of solutions are obtained.
We attempt to describe surface defects in smectic A thin films by formulating a free discontinuity problem - that is, a variational problem in which the order parameter is allowed to have jump discontinuities on some (unknown) set. The free energy functional contains an interfacial energy which penalizes dislocations of the smectic layers at the jump. We discuss mathematical issues related to the existence of minimizers and provide examples of minimizers in some simplified settings.
We consider a general class of parametrized displacement boundary value problems in incompressible nonlinear elasticity. We prove the existence of an unbounded solution branch of classical injective solutions emanating from the unforced stress-free reference configuration, which constitutes a sharp global implicit function theorem. The ramifications of this are: There exists at least one solution for any given applied loading, and or there exists solutions of arbitrarily large norm for some finite loading. We refer to this as solutions in the large. The nonlinear constraint equation enforcing …
We are concerned with underlying connections between fluids, elasticity, isometric embedding of Riemannian manifolds, and the existence of wrinkled solutions of the associated nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we develop such connections for the case of two spatial dimensions, and demonstrate that the continuum mechanical equations can be mapped into a corresponding geometric framework and the inherent direct application of the theory of isometric embeddings and the Gauss-Codazzi equations through examples for the Euler equations for fluids and the Euler-Lagrange equatio…
This paper provides a mathematical approach to study metasurfaces in non flat geometries. Analytical conditions between the curvature of the surface and the set of refracted directions are introduced to guarantee the existence of phase discontinuities. The approach contains both the near and far field cases. A starting point is the formulation of a vector Snell law in presence of abrupt discontinuities on the interfaces.
We study existence of minimisers to the least gradient problem on a strictly convex domain in two settings. On a bounded domain, we allow the boundary data to be discontinuous and prove existence of minimisers in terms of the Hausdorff measure of the discontinuity set. Later, we allow the domain to be unbounded, prove existence of minimisers and study their properties in terms of the regularity of boundary data and the shape of the domain.
We prove non existence of smooth solutions of a quasi-linear system suggested by Ericksen in a model of Nonlinear Elasticity. This system is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type. We discuss also a relation of such a system to polynomial integrals of Classical Hamiltonian systems.
For a two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flow past a convex cornered wall with right angle, a characteristic discontinuity (vortex sheet and/or entropy wave) is generated, which separates the supersonic flow from the gas at rest (hence subsonic). We proved that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity is structurally stable under small perturbations of the upstream supersonic flow in $BV$. The existence of a weak entropy solution and Lipschitz continuous free boundary (i.e. characteristic discontinuity) is established. To achieve this, the problem is formulated as a free boundary pro…
We first prove local-in-time well-posedness for the Muskat problem, modeling fluid flow in a two-dimensional inhomogeneous porous media. The permeability of the porous medium is described by a step function, with a jump discontinuity across the fixed-in-time curve $(x_1,-1+f(x_1))$, while the interface separating the fluid from the vacuum region is given by the time-dependent curve $(x_1,h(x_1,t))$. Our estimates are based on a new methodology that relies upon a careful study of the PDE system, coupling Darcy's law and incompressibility of the fluid, rather than the analysis of the singular in…
In this paper we prove a two-dimensional existence result for a variational model of crack growth for brittle materials in the realm of linearized elasticity. Starting with a time-discretized version of the evolution driven by a prescribed boundary load, we derive a time-continuous quasistatic crack growth in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded deformation (GSBD). As the time-discretization step tends to $0$, the major difficulty lies in showing the stability of the static equilibrium condition, which is achieved by means of a Jump Transfer Lemma generalizing the result o…
The main objective of this article is to discuss the local existence of the solution to an initial value problem involving a non-linear differential equation in the sense of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative of order $σ\in(1,2),$ when the nonlinear term has a discontinuity at zero. Hereafter, by using some tools of Lebesgue spaces such as Hölder inequality, we obtain Nagumo-type, Krasnoselskii-Krein-type and Osgood-type uniqueness theorems for the problem.
We prove in this short report the existence of a fundamental solution (F.S.) for the Cauchy initial boundary problem on the whole space for the parabolic differential equation having at origin the point of non-integrable unbounded discontinuity for coefficient before a first order derivative. We give also the non-asymptotic rapidly decreasing at infinity estimate for these function. We extend the classical parametrix method offered by E.E.Levi.

A nonlinear elasticity model for comparing images is formulated and analyzed, in which optimal transformations between images are sought as minimizers of an integral functional. The existence of minimizers in a suitable class of homeomorphisms between image domains is established under natural hypotheses. We investigate whether for linearly related images the minimization algorithm delivers the linear transformation as the unique minimizer.
Within the framework of linear elasticity we assume the availability of internal full-field measurements of the continuum deformations of a non-homogeneous isotropic solid. The aim is the quantitative reconstruction of the associated moduli. A simple gradient system for the sought constitutive parameters is derived algebraically from the momentum equation, whose coefficients are expressed in terms of the measured displacement fields and their spatial derivatives. Direct integration of this system is discussed to finally demonstrate the inexpediency of such an approach when dealing with noisy d…
Contact problems with Coulomb friction in linear elasticity are notoriously difficult and their mathematical analysis is still largely incomplete. In this paper, a model problem with heterogeneous friction coefficient is considered in two-dimensional elasticity. For this model problem, an existence and uniqueness result is proved, relying heavily on harmonic analysis. A complete and rigorous homogenization analysis can be performed in the case of a highly oscillating friction coefficient, being the first result in that direction. The Coulomb law is found to hold in the limit, and an explicit f…
In this article, we prove that solutions to a problem in nonlinear elasticity corresponding to small initial displacements exist globally in the exterior of a nontrapping obstacle. The medium is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and hyperelastic, and the nonlinearity is assumed to satisfy a null condition. The techniques contained herein would allow for more complicated geometries provided that there is a sufficient decay of local energy for the linearized problem.
We consider a nonlinear, frame indifferent Griffith model for nonsimple brittle materials where the elastic energy also depends on the second gradient of the deformations. In the framework of free discontinuity and gradient discontinuity problems, we prove existence of minimizers for boundary value problems. We then pass to a small strain limit in terms of suitably rescaled displacement fields and show that the nonlinear energies can be identified with a linear Griffith model in the sense of $Γ$-convergence. This complements the study in [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 225 (2017), 425-467] by provi…
We consider a well known model for lipid-bilayer membrane vesicles exhibiting phase separation, incorporating a phase field with finite curvature elasticity. We prove the existence of a plethora of equilibria, corresponding to symmetry-breaking solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations, via global bifurcation from the spherical state. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first rigorous existence results for this class of problems. We overcome several difficulties in carrying this out. Due to inherent in-plane fluidity combined with finite curvature elasticity, neither the Euleria…
A metasurface is a surface, tipically a plane, on which a function called phase discontinuity is chosen so that the metasurface produces a desired reflection or refraction job. We derive the equations that the phase discontinuity function must satisfy, they are Monge-Ampère partial differential equations, and we prove existence of solutions.
