We study the free boundary problem for a contact discontinuity for the system of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. A surface of contact discontinuity is a characteristic of this system with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the velocity and the magnetic field are continuous whereas the density, the entropy and the temperature may have a jump. For the two-dimensional case, we prove the local-in-time existence in Sobolev spaces of a unique solution of the free boundary problem provided that the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity.
We investigate non-contraction of large perturbations around intermediate entropic shock waves and contact discontinuities for the three-dimensional planar compressible isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To do that, we take advantage of criteria developed by Kang and Vasseur in [6], and non-contraction property is measured by pseudo distance based on relative entropy.
We prove the existence of a subsonic axisymmetric weak solution $({\bf u},ρ,p)$ with ${\bf u}=u_x{\bf e}_x+u_r{\bf e}_r+u_θ{\bf e}_θ$ to steady Euler system in a three-dimensional infinitely long cylinder $\mathcal{N}$ when prescribing the values of the entropy $(=\frac{p}{ρ^γ})$ and angular momentum density $(=ru_θ)$ at the entrance by piecewise $C^2$ functions with a discontinuity on a curve on the entrance of $\mathcal{N}$. Due to the variable entropy and angular momentum density (=swirl) conditions with a discontinuity at the entrance, the corresponding solution has a nonzero vorticity, no…
We develop a theory based on relative entropy to show the uniqueness and L^2 stability (up to a translation) of extremal entropic Rankine-Hugoniot discontinuities for systems of conservation laws (typically 1-shocks, n-shocks, 1-contact discontinuities and n-contact discontinuities of large amplitude) among bounded entropic weak solutions having an additional trace property. The existence of a convex entropy is needed. No BV estimate is needed on the weak solutions considered. The theory holds without smallness condition. The assumptions are quite general. For instance, strict hyperbolicity is…
We study the free boundary problem for contact discontinuities in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). They are characteristic discontinuities with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the magnetic field and the velocity are continuous whereas the density and the entropy may have a jump. Under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial p/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure satisfied at each point of the unperturbed contact discontinuity, we prove the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of the linearized problem for 2D planar MHD flo…
In this paper, we consider the large time asymptotic nonlinear stability of a superposition of shock waves with contact discontinuities for the one dimensional Jin-Xin relaxation system with small initial perturbations, provided that the strengths of waves are small with the same order. The results are obtained by elementary weighted energy estimates based on the underlying wave structure and an estimate on the heat equation.
In this short note we partially extend the recent nonuniqueness results on admissible weak solutions to the Riemann problem for the 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations. We prove nonuniqueness of admissible weak solutions that start from the Riemann initial data allowing a contact discontinuity to emerge.
In this paper, we study the structurally nonlinear stability of supersonic contact discontinuities in three-dimensional compressible isentropic steady flows. Based on the weakly linear stability result and the $L^2$-estimates obtained by the authors in J. Diff. Equ. 255(2013), for the linearized problems of three-dimensional compressible isentropic steady equations at a supersonic contact discontinuity satisfying certain stability conditions, we first derive tame estimates of solutions to the linearized problem in higher order norms by exploring the behavior of vorticities. Since the supersoni…
We consider the motion of two inviscid, compressible, and electrically conducting fluids separated by an interface across which there is no fluid flow in the presence of surface tension. The magnetic field is supposed to be nowhere tangential to the interface. This leads to the characteristic free boundary problem for contact discontinuities with surface tension in three-dimensional ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We prove the nonlinear structural stability of MHD contact discontinuities with surface tension in Sobolev spaces by a modified Nash--Moser iteration scheme. The main …
We study the system of nonisentropic thermoelasticity describing the motion of thermoelastic nonconductors of heat in two and three spatial dimensions, where the frame-indifferent constitutive relation generalizes that for compressible neo-Hookean materials. Thermoelastic contact discontinuities are characteristic discontinuities for which the velocity is continuous across the discontinuity interface. Mathematically, this renders a nonlinear multidimensional hyperbolic problem with a characteristic free boundary. We identify a stability condition on the piecewise constant background states and…
We prove the local-in-time existence of solutions with a contact discontinuity of the equations of ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for 2D planar flows provided that the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition $[\partial p/\partial N]<0$ on the jump of the normal derivative of the pressure is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity. MHD contact discontinuities are characteristic discontinuities with no flow across the discontinuity for which the pressure, the magnetic field and the velocity are continuous whereas the density and the entropy may have a jump. This paper is a nat…
We study the Riemann problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations in two space dimensions with the pressure law describing the Chaplygin gas. It is well known that there are Riemann initial data for which the 1D Riemann problem does not have a classical $BV$ solution, instead a $δ$-shock appears, which can be viewed as a generalized measure-valued solution with a concentration measure in the density component. We prove that in the case of two space dimensions there exists infinitely many bounded admissible weak solutions starting from the same initial data. Moreover, we show the sam…

We prove the existence of a subsonic weak solution $({\bf u}, ρ, p)$ to steady Euler system in a two-dimensional infinitely long nozzle when prescribing the value of the entropy $(= \frac{p}{ρ^γ})$ at the entrance by a piecewise $C^2$ function with a discontinuity at a point. Due to the variable entropy condition with a discontinuity at the entrance, the corresponding solution has a nonzero vorticity and contains a contact discontinuity $x_2=g_D(x_1)$. We construct such a solution via Helmholtz decomposition. The key step is to decompose the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions on the contact discontin…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the three dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. We first obtain the existence of weak solutions with small $L^2$-norm which may display codimension-one discontinuities in density, pressure, magnetic field and velocity gradient. The weak solutions we consider here exhibit just enough regularity and structure which allow us to develop uniqueness and continuous dependence theory for the compressible MHD equations. Our results generalise and extend those for the intermediate weak solutions of compressible Navier-St…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity, and establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions with large initial data. The key ingredient of the proof is to establish the a priori estimates on the effective viscous flux and a newly introduced "transverse effective viscous flux" vector field inducted by the transverse magnetic field. The initial density is assumed only to be uniformly bounded and of finite mass and, in particular, the vacuum and discontinuities of the density are allowed.
We prove the stability of contact discontinuities without shear, a family of special discontinuous solutions for the three-dimensional full Euler systems, in the class of vanishing dissipation limits of the corresponding Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. We also show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system converge to the contact discontinuity when the initial datum converges to the contact discontinuity itself. This implies the uniqueness of the contact discontinuity in the class that we are considering. Our results give an answer to the open question, whether the contact discontinuity…
This paper is concerned with nonlinear stability of viscous contact discontinuity to a free boundary problem for the one-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in half space $[0,\infty)$. For the case when the local stability of the contact discontinuities was first studied by [1],later generalized by [2], local stability of weak viscous contact discontinuity is well-established by [4-8], but for the global stability of the impermeable gas with big oscillation ends $(|θ_+-θ_-|>1) $, fewer results have been obtained excluding zero dissipation [9] or $γ\to 1$ gas see [10]. Our mai…
This paper is concerned with nonlinear stability of viscous contact discontinuity to inflow problem for the one-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with different ends in half space $[0,\infty)$. For the case when the local stability of the contact discontinuities was first studied by \cite{X},later generalized by \cite{LX}, local stability of weak viscous contact discontinuity is well-established by \cite{HMS,HMX,HXY,HZ,HLM2009}, but for the global stability of inflow gas with big oscillation ends $(|θ_+-θ_-|>1\ and \ |ρ_+-ρ_-|>1)$, fewer results have been obtained excluding…
This paper is concerned with the Riemann problem for the isentropic Chaplygin gas magnetogasdynamics equations and the formation of delta shocks and vacuum states as pressure and magnetic field vanish. Firstly, the Riemann problem of the isentropic magnetogasdynamics equations for Chaplygin gas is solved analytically. Secondly, it is rigorously proved that, as both the pressure and the magnetic field vanish, the Riemann solution containing two shock waves tends to a delta shock solution to the transport equations, and the intermediate density between the two shocks tends to a weighted $δ$-meas…

In this paper we study the problem of the global existence (in time) of weak, entropic solutions to a system of three hyperbolic conservation laws, in one space dimension, for large initial data. The system models the dynamics of phase transitions in an isothermal fluid; in Lagrangian coordinates, the phase interfaces are represented as stationary contact discontinuities. We focus on the persistence of solutions consisting in three bulk phases separated by two interfaces. Under some stability conditions on the phase configuration and by a suitable front tracking algorithm we show that, if the …
