We use Galois cohomology to study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbf{Q}(N^{1/p})$, where $N \equiv 1 \bmod{p}$ is prime. We prove a partial converse to a theorem of Calegari--Emerton, and provide a new explanation of the known counterexamples to the full converse of their result. In the case $p = 5$, we prove a complete characterization of the $5$-rank of the class group of $\mathbf{Q}(N^{1/5})$ in terms of whether or not $\prod_{k=1}^{(N-1)/2} k^{k}$ and $\frac{\sqrt{5} - 1}{2}$ are $5$th powers mod $N$.
For a prime number $p$, we give a new restriction on pro-$p$ groups $G$ which are realizable as the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group $G_F(p)$ for a field $F$ containing a root of unity of order $p$. This restriction arises from Kummer Theory and the structure of the maximal $p$-radical extension of $F$. We study it in the abstract context of pro-$p$ groups $G$ with a continuous homomorphism $θ\colon G\to1+p\mathbb{Z}_p$, and characterize it cohomologically, and in terms of 1-cocycles on $G$. This is used to produce new examples of pro-$p$ groups which do not occur as maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups …
We study the Galois action on paths in the $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$-pro-unipotent étale fundamental groupoid of a hyperbolic curve $X$ over a $p$-adic field with $\ell\neq p$. We prove an Oda--Tamagawa-type criterion for the existence of a Galois-invariant path in terms of the reduction of $X$, as well as an anabelian reconstruction result determining the stable reduction type of $X$ in terms of its fundamental groupoid. We give an explicit combinatorial description of the non-abelian Kummer map of $X$ in arbitrary depth, and deduce consequences for the non-abelian Chabauty method for affine hyperbol…
The existence of rational points on Kummer varieties associated to 2-coverings of abelian varieties over number fields can sometimes be proved through the variation of the Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of the underlying abelian variety, using an idea of Swinnerton-Dyer. Following Mazur and Rubin, we consider the case when the Galois action on the 2-torsion has a large image. Under mild additional hypotheses we prove the Hasse principle for the associated Kummer varieties assuming the finiteness of relevant Shafarevich-Tate groups.
Inspired by Kummer theory on abelian varieties, we give similar looking descriptions of the Galois groups occuring in the differential Galois theories of Picard-Vessiot, Kolchin and Pillay, and mention some arithmetic applications.
We call a (q-1)-th Kummer extension of a cyclotomic function field a quasi-cyclotomic function field if it is Galois, but non-abelian, over the rational function field with the constant field of q elements. In this paper, we determine the structure of the Galois groups of a kind of quasi-cyclotomic function fields over the base field. We also give the genus formulae of them.
This paper justifies an assertion in (Elder, Proc AMS 137 (2009), no 4, 1193--1203) that Galois scaffolds make the questions of Galois module structure tractable. Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p$ and let $K=k((T))$. For the class of characteristic $p$ elementary abelian $p$-extensions $L/K$ with Galois scaffolds described in mentioned paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the valuation ring $\mathfrak{O}_L$ to be free over its associated order $\mathcal{A}_{L/K}$ in $K[\Gal(L/K)]$. Interestingly, this condition agrees with the condition found by Y. Miyata, con…
We discuss lifting properties of continuous homomorphisms from absolute Galois groups into (pro)finite groups. An analogy with the Langlands program is pointed out in the beginning of the note.
Let $K$ be a field whose characteristic is prime to a fixed integer $n$ with $μ_n \subset K$, and choose $ω\in μ_n$ a primitive $n$th root of unity. Denote the absolute Galois group of $K$ by $\operatorname{Gal}(K)$, and the mod-$n$ central-descending series of $\operatorname{Gal}(K)$ by $\operatorname{Gal}(K)^{(i)}$. Recall that Kummer theory, together with our choice of $ω$, provides a functorial isomorphism between $\operatorname{Gal}(K)/\operatorname{Gal}(K)^{(2)}$ and $\operatorname{Hom}(K^\times,\mathbb{Z}/n)$. Analogously to Kummer theory, in this note we use the Merkurjev-Suslin theore…
We study Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension. Over a number field we show that the subgroup of odd order elements of the Brauer group does not obstruct the Hasse principle. Sufficient conditions for the triviality of the Brauer group are given, which allow us to give an example of a Kummer K3 surface of geometric Picard rank 17 over the rationals with trivial Brauer group. We establish the non-emptyness of the Brauer--Manin set of everywhere locally soluble Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of products of hyperelliptic Jacobians with larg…
Let $p$ be a prime, and let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, with absolute Galois group $\cal{G}_K$. Let $π$ be a uniformizer of $K$ and let $K_\infty$ be the Kummer extension obtained by adjoining to $K$ a system of compatible $p^n$-th roots of $π$, for all $n$, and let $L$ be the Galois closure of $K_\infty$. Using these extensions, Caruso has constructed étale $(φ,τ)$-modules, which classify $p$-adic Galois representations of $K$. In this paper, we use locally analytic vectors and theories of families of $φ$-modules over Robba rings to prove the overconvergence of $(φ,τ)$-module…
Let $k=k_0(\sqrt[3]{d})$ be a cubic Kummer extension of $k_0=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_3)$ with $d>1$ a cube-free integer and $ζ_3$ a primitive third root of unity. Denote by $C_{k,3}^{(σ)}$ the $3$-group of ambiguous classes of the extension $k/k_0$ with relative group $G=\operatorname{Gal}(k/k_0)=\langleσ\rangle$. The aims of this paper are to characterize all extensions $k/k_0$ with cyclic $3$-group of ambiguous classes $C_{k,3}^{(σ)}$ of order $3$, to investigate the multiplicity $m(f)$ of the conductors $f$ of these abelian extensions $k/k_0$, and to classify the fields $k$ according to the cohomology…

Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
Let $F$ be the function field of a curve over a non-archimedean local field. Let $m \geq 2$ be an integer coprime to the characteristic of the residue field of the local field. In this article, we show that every element in $H^{3}(F, μ_{m}^{\otimes 2})$ is of the form $χ\cup (f) \cup (g)$, where $χ$ is in $H^{1}(F, \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z})$ and $(f)$, $(g)$ in $H^{1}(F, μ_{m})$. This extends a result of Parimala and Suresh, where they show this when $m$ is prime and when $F$ contains $μ_{m}$.
We use Galois cohomology methods to produce optimal mod $p^d$ level lowering congruences to a $p$-adic Galois representation that we construct as a well chosen lift of a given residual mod $p$ representation. Using our explicit Galois cohomology methods, we construct for a reductive group $G$ and a given residual representation $\barρ: Γ_F \to G(k)$, ramified at a finite set of primes $S$, in favorable conditions that we identify, a finite set of lifts $ρ$, $\{ρ^q\}$ of $\barρ$ to $G(W(k))$ with the following properties: $ρ: Γ_F \to G(W(k))$ is ramified precisely at $S \cup Q$, with $Q$ a fini…
Let $ K $ be a number field and let $ L/K $ be a tamely ramified radical extension of prime degree $ p $. If $ K $ contains a primitive $ p^{th} $ root of unity then $ L/K $ is a cyclic Kummer extension; in this case the group algebra $ K[G] $ (with $ G=\mbox{Gal}(L/K) $) gives the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $ L/K $, the ring of algebraic integers $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ is locally free over $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $ by Noether's theorem, and Gómez Ayala has determined a criterion for $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ to be a free $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $-module. If $ K $ does not contain a primitive $ p^{th} $…
A remark on transitivity of Galois action on the set of uniquely divisible abelian extensions of the group of algebraic points of an elliptic curve, by $Z^2$
Let $S$ be a semiabelian variety over an algebraically closed field, and let $X$ be an irreducible subvariety not contained in a coset of a proper algebraic subgroup of $S$. We show that the number of irreducible components of $[n]^{-1}(X)$ is bounded uniformly in $n$, and moreover that the bound is uniform in families $X_t$. We prove this by purely Galois-theoretic methods. This proof applies in the more general context of divisible abelian groups of finite Morley rank. In this latter context, we deduce a definability result under the assumption of the Definable Multiplicity Property (DMP). W…
This paper concerns cup product pairings in étale cohomology related to work of M. Kim and of W. McCallum and R. Sharifi. We will show that by considering Ext groups rather than cohomology groups, one arrives at a pairing which combines invariants defined by Kim with a pairing defined by McCallum and Sharifi. We also prove a formula for Kim's invariant in terms of Artin maps in the case of cyclic unramified Kummer extensions. One consequence is that for all $n > 1$, there are infinitely many number fields $F$ over which there are both trivial and non-trivial Kim invariants associated to cyclic…
Given an abelian algebraic group $A$ over a global field $F$, $α\in A(F)$, and a prime $\ell$, the set of all preimages of $α$ under some iterate of $[\ell]$ generates an extension of $F$ that contains all $\ell$-power torsion points as well as a Kummer-type extension. We analyze the Galois group of this extension, and for several classes of $A$ we give a simple characterization of when the Galois group is as large as possible up to constraints imposed by the endomorphism ring or the Weil pairing. This Galois group encodes information about the density of primes $\p$ in the ring of integers of…
In this paper we consider the problem of classifying the isomorphism classes of extensions of degree pk of a p-adic field, restricting to the case of extensions without intermediate fields. We establish a correspondence between the isomorphism classes of these extensions and some Kummer extensions of a suitable field F containing K. We then describe such classes in terms of the representations of Gal(F/K). Finally, for k = 2 and for each possible Galois group G, we count the number of isomorphism classes of the extensions whose normal closure has a Galois group isomorphic to G. As a byproduct,…
The Steinitz class of a number field extension K/k is an ideal class in the ring of integers O_k of k, which, together with the degree [K:k] of the extension determines the O_k-module structure of O_K. We call rt(k,G) the classes which are Steinitz classes of a tamely ramified G-extension of k. We will say that those classes are realizable for the group G; it is conjectured that the set of realizable classes is always a group. We define A'-groups inductively, starting by abelian groups and then considering semidirect products of A'-groups with abelian groups of relatively prime order and direc…
We connect Veronese embeddings to splitting varieties of cup products. We then give an algorithm for constructing splitting varieties for cup products with $\mathbb Z/n$ coefficients, with an explicit calculation for $n=3$. An application to the automatic realization of Galois groups is given.
We consider a field $F$ and positive integers $n$, $m$, such that $m$ is not divisible by $\mathrm{Char}(F)$ and is prime to $n!$. The absolute Galois group $G_F$ acts on the group $\mathbb{U}_n(\mathbb{Z}/m)$ of all $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/m$ cyclotomically. Given $0,1\neq z\in F$ and an arbitrary list $w$ of $n$ Kummer elements $(z)_F$, $(1-z)_F$ in $H^1(G_F,μ_m)$, we construct in a canonical way a quotient $\mathbb{U}_w$ of $\mathbb{U}_n(\mathbb{Z}/m)$ and a cohomology element $ρ^z$ in $H^1(G_F,\mathbb{U}_w)$ whose projection to the superdiago…
We present an explicit description, in terms of central simple algebras, of a cup-product map which occurs in the statement of local Tate duality for Galois modules of prime order p. Given cocycles f and g, we construct a central simple algebra of dimension p^2 whose class in the Brauer group gives the cup-product of f with g. This algebra is as small as possible.
We show that any triple Massey product with respect to prime 2 contains 0 whenever it is defined over any field. This extends the theorem of M. J. Hopkins and K. G. Wickelgren, from global fields to any fields. This is the first time when the vanishing of any $n$-Massey product for some prime $p$ has been established for all fields. This leads to a strong restriction on the shape of relations in the maximal pro-2-quotients of absolute Galois groups, which was out of reach until now. We also develop an extension of Serre's transgression method to detect triple commutators in relations of pro-$p…
For the $p$-cyclotomic tower of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ Fontaine established a description of local Iwasawa cohomology with coefficients in a local Galois representation $V$ in terms of the $ψ$-operator acting on the attached etale $(φ,Γ)$-module $D(V)$. In this article we generalize Fontaine's result to the case of arbitratry Lubin-Tate towers $L_\infty$ over finite extensions $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ by using the Kisin-Ren/Fontaine equivalence of categories between Galois representations and $(φ_L,Γ_L)$-module and extending parts of [Herr L.: Sur la cohomologie galoisienne des corps $p$-adiques. Bull. S…
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields. It is well known that the Tchebotarev density theorem implies that an irreducible, finitely ramified $p$-adic representation $ρ$ of the absolute Galois group of $K$ is determined (up to equivalence) by the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius elements Fr$_v$ at any set of primes $v$ of $K$ of degree $1$ over $F$. Here we prove an analogue for GL$(n)$, namely that a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of GL$(n, {\mathbb A}_K)$ is determined up by the knowledge of its local components at the primes of degree one over $F$. We prove i…
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a finite set of places of $K$. We study the kernels $\Sha_S$ of maps $H^2(G_S,\fq_p) \rightarrow \oplus_{v\in S} H^2(\G_v,\fq_p)$. There is a natural injection $\Sha_S \hookrightarrow \CyB_S$, into the dual $\CyB_S$ of a certain readily computable Kummer group $V_S$, which is always an isomorphism in the wild case. The tame case is much more mysterious. Our main result is that given a finite $X$ coprime to $p$, there exists a finite set of places $S$ coprime to $p$ such that $\Sha_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\hookrightarrow} \CyB_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\t…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this paper, we study the growth of the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the even $K$-groups of rings of integers in a $p$-adic Lie extension. Our results generalize previous results of Coates and Ji-Qin, where they considered the situation of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. Our method of proof differs from these previous work. Their proof relies on an explicit description of certain Galois group via Kummer theory afforded by the context of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, whereas our approach is via considering the Iwasawa cohomology groups with coefficien…
Let $p$ be an irregular prime. Let $K=\Q(ζ)$ be the $p$-cyclotomic field. From Kummer and class field theory, there exist Galois extensions $S/\Q$ of degree $p(p-1)$ such that $S/K$ is a cyclic unramified extension of degree $[S:K]=p$. We give an algebraic construction of the subfields $M$ of $S$ with degree $[M:\Q]=p$ and an explicit formula for the prime decomposition and ramification of the prime number $p$ in the extensions $S/K$, $M/\Q$ and $S/M$. In the last section, we examine the consequences of these results for the Vandiver's conjecture. This article is at elementary level on Classic…
