Let p be an odd prime satisfying Vandiver's conjecture. We consider two objects, the Galois group X of the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extension of the compositum of all Z_p-extensions of the pth cyclotomic field and the Galois group G of the unramified pro-p extension of the cyclotomic field of all p-power roots of unity. We give a lower bound for the height of the annihilator of X as an Iwasawa module. Under some mild assumptions on Bernoulli numbers, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for G to be abelian. The bound and the condition in the two results are given in terms of the special values of a cup product pairing on cyclotomic p-units. We obtain, in particular, that for p less than 1000, Greenberg's conjecture on the pseudo-nullity of X holds and G is in fact abelian.
In the present paper, we shall show that for any prime number p, every finite p-group occurs as the Galois Group of the maximal unramified p-extension over a certain number field of finite degree. We shall also show that for any given pro-p-group G with countably many generators, there exists a number field (not necessary of finite degree) whose maximal unramified p-extension has Galois group isomorphic to G. This means that the set of the isomorphism classes of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified p-extensions over the number fields (including of infinite degree) is precisely equal to …
In this paper we introduce a new method for finding Galois groups by computer. This is particularly effective in the case of Galois groups of p-extensions ramified at finitely many primes but unramified at the primes above p. Such Galois groups have been regarded as amongst the most mysterious objects in number theory. Very little has hitherto been discovered regarding them despite their importance in studying p-adic Galois representations unramified at p. The conjectures of Fontaine-Mazur say that they should have no p-adic analytic quotients (equivalently, the images of the Galois representa…
Continuing the line of thought of an earlier work, we provide the first infinite family of quadratic number fields with everywhere unramified Galois extensions of Galois group $SL_2(5)$, the (unique) smallest nonsolvable group for which this problem was previously open. Our approach also improves upon previous work by yielding the first infinite family of real-quadratic fields possessing an unramified Galois extension whose Galois group is perfect and not generated by involutions. Our result also amounts to a new existence result on quintic number fields with squarefree discriminant and additi…
For given rational prime number $p$ consider the tower of finite extensions of fields $K_0/\mathbb{Q}_p,$ $K/K_0, L/K, M/L$, where $K/K_0$ is unramified and $M/L$ is a Galois extension with Galois group $G$. Suppose one dimensional Honda formal group over the ring $\mathcal{O}_K$, relative to the extension $K/K_0$ and uniformizer $π\in K_0$ is given. The operation $x\underset{F}+y=F(x,y)$ sets a new structure of abelian group on the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{p}_M$ of the ring $\mathcal{O}_M$ which we will denote by $F(\mathfrak{p}_M)$. In this paper the structure of $F(\mathfrak{p}_M)$ as $\mat…
We investigate unramified extensions of number fields with prescribed solvable Galois group and certain extra conditions. In particular, we are interested in the minimal degree of a number field $K$, Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$, such that $K$ possesses an unramified $G$-extension. We improve the best known bounds for the degree of such number fields $K$ for certain classes of solvable groups, in particular nilpotent groups.
For a CM-field $K$ and an odd prime number $p$, let $\widetilde K'$ be a certain multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this paper, we study several basic properties of the unramified Iwasawa module $X_{\widetilde K'}$ of $\widetilde K'$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(\widetilde K'/K)]]$-module. Our first main result is a description of the order of a Galois coinvariant of $X_{\widetilde K'}$ in terms of the characteristic power series of the unramified Iwasawa module of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ under a certain assumption on the splitting of primes above $p$. Second …
Let F denote an unramified extension of the cyclotomic extension of Q_p by (p^n)th roots of unity, for an odd prime p. We determine the conductors of those Kummer extensions of F of degree dividing p^n which are Galois over the maximal unramified subfield of F. This follows from a comparison of the Galois module structure of the multiplicative group of F with the unit filtration of F.
We consider the distribution of the Galois groups $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ of maximal unramified extensions as $K$ ranges over $Γ$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove two properties of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ coming from number theory, which we use as motivation to build a probability distribution on profinite groups with these properties. In Part I, we build such a distribution as a limit of distributions on $n$-generated profinite groups. In Part II, we prove as $q\rightarrow\infty$, agreement of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operato…
We employ methods from homotopy theory to define new obstructions to solutions of embedding problems. By using these novel obstructions we study embedding problems with non-solvable kernel. We apply these obstructions to study the unramified inverse Galois problem. That is, we show that our methods can be used to determine that certain groups cannot be realized as the Galois groups of unramified extensions of certain number fields. To demonstrate the power of our methods, we give an infinite family of totally imaginary quadratic number fields such that $\text{Aut}(\text{PSL}(2,q^2))$ for $q$ a…
Boston, Bush, and Hajir have developed heuristics, extending the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics, that conjecture the distribution of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-p extensions of imaginary quadratic number fields for p an odd prime. In this paper, we find the moments of their proposed distribution, and further prove there is a unique distribution with those moments. Further, we show that in the function field analog, for imaginary quadratic extensions of F_q(t), the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-p extensions, as q goes to infinity, have the moments predicted by the Bo…
In this paper, we introduce a condition $\mathrm{(F}_m'\mathrm{)}$ on a field $K$, for a positive integer $m$, that generalizes Serre's condition (F) and which still implies the finiteness of the Galois cohomology of finite Galois modules annihilated by $m$ and algebraic $K$-tori that split over an extension of degree dividing $m$, as well as certain groups of étale and unramified cohomology. Various examples of fields satisfying $\mathrm{(F}_m'\mathrm{)}$, including those that do not satisfy (F), are given.
We consider a mod 7 Galois representation attached to a genus 2 Siegel cuspforms of level 1 and weight 28 and using some of its Fourier coefficients and eigenvalues computed by N. Skoruppa and the classification of maximal subgroups of PGSp(4,p) we show that its image is as large as possible. This gives a realization of PGSp(4,7) as a Galois group over $\Q$ and the corresponding number field provides a non-solvable extension of $\Q$ which ramifies only at 7.
Fontaine and Mazur conjecture that a number field k has no infinite unramified Galois extension such that its Galois group is a p-adic analytic pro-p-group. We consider this conjecture for the maximal unramified p-extension of a CM-field k.
Let $K/F$ be a finite extension of number fields of degree $n \geq 2$. We establish effective field-uniform unconditional upper bounds for the least norm of a prime ideal of $F$ which is degree 1 over $\mathbb{Q}$ and does not ramify or split completely in $K$. We improve upon the previous best known general estimates due to X. Li when $F = \mathbb{Q}$ and Murty-Patankar when $K/F$ is Galois. Our bounds are the first when $K/F$ is not assumed to be Galois and $F \neq \mathbb{Q}$.
We exhibit, for n at least 5, infinitely many quadratic number fields admitting unramified degree n extensions with prescribed signature whose normal closures have Galois group A_n. This generalizes a result of Uchida and Yamamoto, which did not include the ability to restrict the signature, and a result of Yamamura, which was the case n=5.
Let k be a number field and K/k Galois. We transform the construction of the unramified Brauer group of the norm one torus R^1_K/k(G_m) into the construction of a special abelian extension over K. If k=Q and K/Q biquadratic, we explicitly construct the unramified Brauer group of R^1_K/Q(G_m).
We consider certain Massey products in the cohomology of a Galois extension of fields with coefficients in p-power roots of unity. We prove formulas for these products both in general and in the special case that the Galois extension in question is the maximal extension of a number field unramified outside a set of primes S including those above p and any archimedean places. We then consider those Z_p-Kummer extensions L of the maximal p-cyclotomic extension K of a number field that are unramified outside S. We show that Massey products describe the structure of a certain "decomposition-free" …
We construct étale generalized Heisenberg group covers of hyperelliptic curves over number fields. We use these to produce infinite families of quadratic extensions of cyclotomic fields that admit everywhere unramified generalized Heisenberg Galois extensions.
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
A two-dimensional Galois representation into the Hecke algebra of Katz modular forms of weight one over a finite field of characteristic p is constructed and is shown to be unramified at p in most cases.
We present an algorithm for enumerating all odd semisimple two-dimensional mod p Galois representations unramified outside p. We also discuss the implementation of this algorithm in Sage and give a summary of the results we obtained.
Given a natural number n and a number field K, we show the existence of an integer \ell_0 such that for any prime number \ell\geq \ell_0, there exists a finite extension F/K, unramified in all places above \ell, together with a principally polarized abelian variety A of dimension n over F such that the resulting \ell-torsion representation ρ_{A,\ell} from G_F to GSp(A[\ell](\bar{F})) is surjective and everywhere tamely ramified. In particular, we realize GSp_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell) as the Galois group of a finite tame extension of number fields F'/F such that F is unramified above \ell.
In this article we consider mod p modular Galois representations which are unramified at p such that the Frobenius element at p acts through a scalar matrix. The principal result states that the multiplicity of any such representation is bigger than 1.
We consider the canonical representation of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers in the outer automorphism group of the pro-p completion of the fundamental group of the projective line minus 0,1, and infinity. Deligne has conjectured that a certain graded Z_p-Lie algebra arising from this representation becomes a free p-adic Lie algebra on one element in each odd degree starting with 3 when tensored with the Q_p. We construct good choices of these elements and use them to examine the structure of the Z_p-Lie algebra. In particular, we consider how its structure depends upon the re…
Let $N/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $ρ^\mathrm{nr} : G_K \to \mathrm{Gl}_r(\mathbb Z_p)$ be an $r$-dimensional unramified representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ which is the restriction of an unramified representation $ρ^\mathrm{nr}_{\mathbb Q_p} : G_{\mathbb Q_p} \to \mathrm{Gl}_r(\mathbb Z_p)$. In this paper we consider the $\mathrm{Gal}(N/K)$-equivariant local $ε$-conjecture for the $p$-adic representation $T = \mathbb Z_p^r(1)(ρ^\mathrm{nr})$. For example, if $A$ is an abelian variety of dimension $r$ defined over $\mathbb Q_p$ with good ordi…
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $p$ be a prime unramified in $F$. We prove the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to mod $p^m$ Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties for $F$ of level prime to $p$.
In this paper we show that two dimensional (mod p) Galois representations satisfying mild hypotheses can be lifted to p-adic Galois representations ramified at infinitely many primes such that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius at a density one set of unramified primes are defined over the rational integers. In particular we show that often one can "density one compatibly" lift mod p and mod q Galois representations.
Much work has gone into matrix representations of Galois groups, but there is a whole new class of naturally occurring representations that have as yet gone almost unnoticed. In fact, it is well-known in various areas of mathematics that the main sources of totally disconnected groups are matrix groups over local fields AND automorphism groups of locally finite trees. It is perhaps surprising then that representations of Galois groups into the latter have been almost ignored, while at the same time Galois representations into the former have been enormously effective in resolving long-standing…
We investigate specializations of infinite families of regular Galois extensions over number fields. The problem to what extent the local behaviour of specializations of one single regular Galois extension can be prescribed has been investigated by Dèbes and Ghazi in the unramified case, and by Legrand, Neftin and the author in general. Here, we generalize these results and give a partial solution to Grunwald problems using Galois extensions arising as specializations of a family of regular Galois extensions.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $e_p$ be its irregularity index. If $4e_p+8 <\frac{p-1}{2}$ we construct a Galois representation with image in the diagonal torus of $\op{GSp}_4(\Fp)$ that lifts to a characteristic $0$ representation unramified at all primes $\ell\neq p$ with image containing a finite index subgroup of $\Symp$.
Let $p\neq2$ be a prime. We show a technique based on local class field theory and on the expansions of certain resultants which allows to recover very easily Lbekkouri's characterization of Eisenstein polynomials generating cyclic wild extensions of degree $p^2$ over $\Q_p$, and to extend it to the case of the base field $K$ being an unramified extension of $\Q_p$. Furthermore, when a polynomial satisfies only some of the stated conditions, we show that the first unsatisfied condition gives information about the Galois group of the normal closure. This permits to give a complete classificatio…
Let $K$ be a number field and $K_{ur}$ be the maximal extension of $K$ that is unramified at all places. In a previous article, the first author found three real quadratic fields $K$ such that $Gal(K_{ur}/K)$ is finite and nonabelian simple under the assumption of the GRH(Generalized Riemann Hypothesis). In this article, we will identify more quadratic number fields $K$ such that $Gal(K_{ur}/K)$ is a finite nonsolvable group and also explicitly calculate their Galois groups under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.
- Let K be a totally imaginary number field. Denote by G ur K (2) the Galois group of the maximal unramified pro-2 extension of K. By comparing cup-products in {é}tale cohomology of SpecO K and cohomology of uniform pro-2 groups, we obtain situations where G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform analytic quotient, proving some new special cases of the unramified Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. For example, in the family of imaginary quadratic fields K for which the 2-rank of the class group is equal to 5, we obtain that for at least 33.12% of such K, the group G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform an…
We prove that any Galois extension of commutative rings with normal basis and abelian Galois group of odd order has a self dual normal basis. Also we show that if S/R is an unramified extension of number rings with Galois group of odd order and $R$ is totally real then the normal basis does not exist for S/R.
In the local, unramified case the determinantal functions associated to the group-ring of a finite group satisfy Galois descent. This note examines the obstructions to Galois determinantal descent in the ramified case.
Ideas and techniques from Khare's and Wintenberger's article on the proof of Serre's conjecture for odd conductors are used to establish that for a fixed prime l infinitely many of the groups PSL_2(F_{l^r}) (for r running) occur as Galois groups over the rationals such that the corresponding number fields are unramified outside a set consisting of l, the infinite place and only one other prime.
We show that for primes $N, p \geq 5$ with $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$ is divisible by $p$. Our methods are via congruences between Eisenstein series and cusp forms. In particular, we show that when $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, there is always a cusp form of weight $2$ and level $Γ_0(N^2)$ whose $\ell$-th Fourier coefficient is congruent to $\ell + 1$ modulo a prime above $p$, for all primes $\ell$. We use the Galois representation of such a cusp form to explicitly construct an unramified degree $p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$.
For a quadratic field K, we investigate continuous mod p representations of the absolute Galois groups of K that are unramified away from p and infinity. We prove that for certain pairs (K,p), there are no such irreducible representations. We also list some imaginary quadratic fields for which such irreducible representations exist. As an application, we look at elliptic curves with good reduction away from 2 over quadratic fields.
In this paper, we will study the pseudo-nullity of the fine Selmer group and its related question. Namely, we investigate certain situations, where one can deduce the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a general Galois module over a admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $F_{\infty}$ from the knowledge that pseudo-nullity of the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of $F_{\infty}$ at which every prime of $F_{\infty}$ above $p$ splits completely. In particular, this gives us a way to construct examples of the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a …
For any finite group G and integer i, let $\mathcal{H}^i(G)$ be the set of all the isomorphism classes of the Galois cohomology groups $\hat{H}^i(K/k,E_K)$, where K/k runs over all the unramified G-extension of number fields and E_K denotes the global unit group of K. We will determine $\mathcal{H}^i(G)$ for i=0,1,2, and 4 in the case where G is a finite p-group.
We produce infinitely many finite 2-groups that do not embed with index 2 in any group generated by involutions. This disproves a conjecture of Lemmermeyer and restricts the possible Galois groups of unramified 2-extensions, Galois over the rationals, of quadratic number fields.
For various nonsolvable groups $G$, we prove the existence of extensions of the rationals $\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $G$ and inertia groups of order dividing $ge(G)$, where $ge(G)$ is the smallest exponent of a generating set for $G$. For these groups $G$, this gives the existence of number fields of degree $ge(G)$ with an unramified $G$-extension. The existence of such extensions over $\mathbb{Q}$ for all finite groups would imply that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a quadratic number field admitting an unramified $G$-extension, as was recently conjectured. We also provide furt…
We show that under a suitable oddness condition, irreducible mod $p$ representations of the absolute Galois group of an arbitrary number field have characteristic zero lifts which are unramified outside a finite set of primes and trianguline at all primes of $F$ dividing $p$. We also prove variants of this result for representations valued in connected reductive groups.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $K_{f}$ the finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ of degree $f$, and $G_{K_{f}}$ its absolute Galois group. We construct analytic families of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules which give rise to some families of 2-dimensional crystalline representations of $G_{K_{f}}$ with length of filtration $\geq p$. As an application, we prove that the modulo $p$ reductions of the members of each such family (with respect to appropriately chosen Galois-stable lattices) are constant.
For a totally real field $F$, a finite extension $\mathbf{F}$ of $\mathbf{F}_p$ and a Galois character $χ: G_F \to \mathbf{F}^{\times}$ unramified away from a finite set of places $Σ\supset \{\mathfrak{p} \mid p\}$ consider the Bloch-Kato Selmer group $H:=H^1_Σ(F, χ^{-1})$. In an earlier paper of the authors it was proved that the number $d$ of isomorphism classes of (non-semisimple, reducible) residual representations $\overlineρ$ giving rise to lines in $H$ which are modular by some $ρ_f$ (also unramified outside $Σ$) satisfies $d \geq n:= \dim_{\mathbf{F}} H$. This was proved under the assu…
The structure of the Galois group of the maximal unramified p-extension of an imaginary quadratic field is restricted in various ways. In this paper we construct a family of finite 3-groups satisfying these restrictions. We prove several results about this family and characterize them as finite extensions of certain quotients of a Sylow pro-3 subgroup of SL_2(Z_3). We verify that the first group in the family does indeed arise as such a Galois group and provide a small amount of evidence that this may hold for the other members. If this were the case then it would imply that there is no upper …
