We consider a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) corresponding to a deformation of the fundamental commutator obtained by adding a term quadratic in the momentum. From this GUP, we compute corrections to the Unruh effect and related Unruh temperature, by first following a heuristic derivation, and then a more standard field theoretic calculation. In the limit of small deformations, we recover the thermal character of the Unruh radiation. Corrections to the temperature at first order in the deforming parameter are compared for the two approaches, and found to be in agreement as for the dependence on the cubic power of the acceleration of the reference frame. The dependence of the shifted temperature on the frequency is also pointed out and discussed.
Motivated by the recently derived new form of generalized uncertainty principle we obtain the corresponding dispersion relation which is now modified. This modification can be interpreted as a possible mechanism that makes particles more massive. In addition, the modified velocity of photons is obtained and indicates that photons' propagation depends on their energy, thus superluminal photons are permitted due to generalized uncertainty principle. Furthermore, we derive and solve the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation in the presence of GUP corrections, and therefore the GUP-corrected emiss…
We investigate the Unruh-Fulling effect in a class of nonlocal field theories by examining both the number operator and Unruh-DeWitt detector methods. Unlike in previous literature, we use Unruh quantization to quantize the matter field. Such choice, as oppose to standard Minkowski decomposition, naturally incorporates the time translational invariance in the positive frequency Wightman function and thus captures the thermal equilibrium of the system. We analyze the Unruh-Fulling effect for a massless real scalar field in both the Lorentz noninvariant and Lorentz invariant nonlocal theories. I…
In this study, the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle on the theory of gravity are analyzed. Inspired by Verlinde's entropic gravity approach and using the modified Unruh temperature, the generalized Einstein field equations with cosmological constant are obtained and corresponding conservation law is investigated. The resulting conservation law of energy-momentum tensor dictates that the generalized Einstein field equations are valid in a very limited range of accelerations. Moreover, the modified Newton's law of gravity and the modified Poisson equation are derived. In a certai…
The Unruh effect can be correctly treated only by using the Minkowski quantization and a model of a "particle" detector, not by using the Rindler quantization. The energy produced by a detector accelerated only for a short time can be much larger than the energy needed to change the velocity of the detector. Although the measuring process lasts an infinite time, the production of the energy can be qualitatively explained by a time-energy uncertainty relation.
We have shown the classical correspondence of Unruh effect in the classical relativistic electron theory in our previous work (gr-qc/0105051). Here we demonstrate the analogy between the classical relativistic electron theory and the classical Unruh-DeWitt type monopole detector theory. The field configuration generated by a uniformly accelerated detector is worked out. The classical correspondence of Unruh effect for scalar fields is shown by calculating the modified energy density for the scalar field around the detector. We conclude that a classical monopole detector cannot find any evidenc…
We show through the Choi matrix approach that the effect of Unruh acceleration on a qubit is similar to the interaction of the qubit with a vacuum bath, despite the finiteness of the Unruh temperature. Thus, rather counterintuitvely, from the perspective of decoherence in this framework, the particle experiences a vacuum bath with a temperature-modified interaction strength, rather than a thermal bath. We investigate how this "relativistic decoherence" is modified by the presence of environmentally induced decoherence, by studying the degradation of quantum information, as quantified by parame…
We estimate the transition rates of a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a quantum field with reflecting conditions on a boundary plane (a "mirror"). We find that these are essentially indistinguishable from the usual Unruh rates, viz. that the Unruh effect persists in the presence of the mirror. This shows that the Unruh effect is not merely a consequence of the entanglement between left and right Rindler quanta in the Minkowski vacuum. Since in this setup the state of the field in the Rindler wedge is pure, we argue furthermore that the relevant entropy in the Unruh effec…
In this paper we propose a new form of generalized uncertainty principle which involves both a linear as well as a quadratic term in the momentum. From this we have obtained the corresponding modified dispersion relation which is compared with the corresponding relation in rainbow gravity. The new form of the generalized uncertainty principle reduces to the known forms in appropriate limits. We then calculate the modified velocity of photons and we find that it is energy dependent, allowing therefore for a superluminal propagation. We then derive the $1+1$-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation tak…
We show that without Lorentz invariance, the Unruh effect does not exist. We use modified dispersion relations and describe in turn: the non-thermal nature of the vacuum (defined in the preferred frame) restricted to the Rindler wedge, the loss of the KMS property of the Wigthman function, the transition amplitudes and transition rates of a uniformaly accelerated detector. This situation seems to contrast with the Hawking radiation of acoustic black holes, which under certain assumptions has been shown to be robust to a breaking of Lorentz symmetry. We explain this discrepancy.
The nonlocal field theory commonly requires a minimal length, and so it appears to formulate the nonlocal theory in terms of the doubly special relativity which makes the speed of light and the minimal length invariant simultaneously. We set up a generic nonlocal model having the same set of solutions as the local theory but allowing Lorentz violations due to the minimal length. It is exactly corresponding to the model with the modified dispersion relation in the doubly special relativity. For this model, we calculate the modified Wightman function and the rate of response function by using th…
We analyse within first-order perturbation theory the instantaneous transition rate of an accelerated Unruh-DeWitt particle detector whose coupling to a massless scalar field on four-dimensional Minkowski space is regularised by a spatial profile. For the Lorentzian profile introduced by Schlicht, the zero size limit is computed explicitly and expressed as a manifestly finite integral formula that no longer involves regulators or limits. The same transition rate is obtained for an arbitrary profile of compact support under a modified definition of spatial smearing. Consequences for the asympto…
Mixing transformations for a uniformly accelerated observer (Rindler observer) are analyzed within the quantum field theory framework as a basis for investigating gravitational effects on flavor oscillations. In particular, the case of two charged boson fields with different masses is discussed. In spite of such a minimal setting, the standard Unruh radiation is found to loose its characteristic thermal interpretation due to the interplay between the Bogolubov transformation hiding in field mixing and the one arising from the Rindler spacetime structure. The modified spectrum detected by the R…
Among various uncertainty relations, the profound fine-grained uncertainty relation is used to distinguish the uncertainty inherent in obtaining any combination of outcomes for different measurements. In this Letter, we explore this uncertainty relation in relativistic regime. For observer undergoes an uniform acceleration who is immersed in an Unruh thermal bath, we show that the uncertainty bound is dependent on the acceleration parameter and choice of Unruh modes. We find that the measurements in mutually unbiased bases, sharing same uncertainty bound in inertial frame, could be distinguish…
We consider an Unruh-DeWitt detector in inertial and circular motion in Minkowski spacetime of arbitrary dimension, coupled to a quantised scalar field with the Lorentz-violating dispersion relation $ω= |{\bf k}|\, f (|{\bf k}|/M_{\star})$, where $M_{\star}$ is the Lorentz-breaking scale. Assuming that $f$ dips below unity somewhere, we show that an inertial detector experiences large low energy Lorentz violations in all spacetime dimensions greater than two, generalising previous results in four dimensions. For a detector in circular motion, we show that a similar low energy Lorentz violation…
In this Letter we study the radiation measured by an accelerated detector, coupled to a scalar field, in the presence of a fundamental minimal length. The latter is implemented by means of a modified momentum space Green's function. After calibrating the detector, we find that the net flux of field quanta is negligible, and that there is no Planckian spectrum. We discuss possible interpretations of this result, and we comment on experimental implications in heavy ion collisions and atomic systems.
The uncertainty principle restricts our ability to simultaneously predict the measurement outcomes of two incompatible observables of a quantum particle. However, this uncertainty could be reduced and quantified by a new Entropic Uncertainty Relation (EUR). By the open quantum system approach, we explore how the nature of de Sitter space affects the EUR. When the quantum memory $A$ freely falls in the de Sitter space, we demonstrate that the entropic uncertainty acquires an increase resulting from a thermal bath with the Gibbons-Hawking temperature. And for the static case, we find that the te…
In this paper, by using the holographic principle, a modified equipartition theorem where we assume that below a critical temperature the energy is not equally divided on all bits, and the Unruh temperature, we derive MOND theory and a modified Friedmann equation compatible with MOND theory. Furthermore, we rederive a modified Newton's law of gravitation by employing an adequate redefinition of the numbers of bits.
Various theories that aim at unifying gravity with quantum mechanics suggest modifications of the Heisenberg algebra for position and momentum. From the perspective of quantum mechanics, such modifications lead to new uncertainty relations which are thought (but not proven) to imply the existence of a minimal observable length. Here we prove this statement in a framework of sufficient physical and structural assumptions. Moreover, we present a general method that allows to formulate optimal and state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations. In addition, instead of variances, we make u…
In this study, we investigate the effect of the generalized uncertainty principle on the $Λ$CDM cosmological model. Using quantum corrected Unruh effect and Verlinde's entropic gravity idea, we find Planck-scale corrected Friedmann equations with a cosmological constant. These results modify the $Λ$CDM cosmology.
In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes using a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with a correction term linear order in the momentum uncertainty. The mass-temperature relation and heat capacity are calculated from which critical and remnant masses are obtained. The results are exact and are found to be identical. The entropy expression gives the famous area theorem upto leading order corrections from GUP. In particular, the linear order term in GUP leads to a $\sqrt{A}$ correction to the area theorem. Finally, the area theorem can be expressed in terms of a new variabl…
We revisit the coordinate coherent states approach through two different quantization procedures in the quantum field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski plane. The first procedure, which is based on the normal commutation relation between an annihilation and creation operators, deduces that a point mass can be described by a Gaussian function instead of the usual Dirac delta function. However, we argue this specific quantization by adopting the canonical one (based on the canonical commutation relation between a field and its conjugate momentum) and show that a point mass should still be d…
Motivated by several approaches to quantum gravity, there is a considerable literature on generalised uncertainty principles particularly through modification of the canonical position-momentum commutation relations. Some of these modified relations are also consistent with general principles that may be supposed of any physical theory. Such modified commutators have significant observable consequences. Here we study the noisy behaviour of an optomechanical system assuming a certain commonly studied modified commutator. From recent observations of radiation pressure noise in tabletop optomecha…
Verlinde's heuristic argument for the interpretation of the standard Newtonian gravitational force as an entropic force is generalized by the introduction of a minimum temperature (or maximum wave length) for the microscopic degrees of freedom on the holographic screen. With the simplest possible setup, the resulting gravitational acceleration felt by a test mass m from a point mass M at a distance R is found to be of the form of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) as suggested by Milgrom. The corresponding MOND-type acceleration constant is proportional to the minimum temperature, which ca…
We provide a method to calculate the rate of false vacuum decay induced by a black hole. The method uses complex tunneling solutions and consistently takes into account the structure of different quantum vacua in the black hole metric via boundary conditions. The latter are connected to the asymptotic behavior of the time-ordered Green's function in the corresponding vacua. We illustrate the technique on a two-dimensional toy model of a scalar field with inverted Liouville potential in an external background of a dilaton black hole. We analytically derive the exponential suppression of tunneli…
The new uncertainty relation is derived in the context of the canonical quantum theory with gravity for the case of the maximally symmetric space. This relation establishes a connection between fluctuations of the quantities which determine the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures of the spacelike hypersurface in spacetime and introduces the uncertainty principle for quantum gravitational systems. The generalized time-energy uncertainty relation, which takes into account gravity, is proposed. It is shown that known Unruh's uncertainty relation follows, as a particular case, from the new uncertai…
Recently Ali et al. (2009) proposed a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (or GUP) with a linear term in momentum (accompanied by Plank length). Inspired by this idea we examine the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for a Schwarzschild black hole with a modified Heisenberg algebra which has a linear term in momentum. We found that the leading contribution to mass comes from the square root of the quantum number 'n' which coincides with Bekenstein's proposal. We also found that the mass of the black hole is directly proportional to the quantum number 'n' when quantum gravity effects are taken into consider…
We consider a modification of the Brans-Dicke gravitational Action Integral inspired by the existence of a minimum length uncertainty for the scalar field. In particular, the kinetic part of the Brans-Dicke scalar field is modified such that the equation of motion for the scalar field be modified according to the quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). For the background geometry, we assume the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker metric. We investigate the dynamics and the cosmological evolution for the dynamical variables of the theory and we compare …
Very recently Ali et al.(2009) proposed a new generalized uncertainty principle (or GUP) with a linear term in Plank length which is consistent with doubly special relativity and string theory. The classical and quantum effects of this generalized uncertainty principle (term as modified uncertainty principle or MUP) are investigated on the phase space of a dilatonic cosmological model with an exponential dilaton potential in a flat FRW background . Interestingly, as a consequence of MUP, we found that it is possible to get a late time acceleration for this model. For the quantum mechanical des…
Heisenberg showed in the early days of quantum theory that the uncertainty principle follows as a direct consequence of the quantization of electromagnetic radiation in the form of photons. As we show here the gravitational interaction of the photon and the particle being observed modifies the uncertainty principle with an additional term. From the modified or gravitational uncertainty principle it follows that there is an absolute minimum uncertainty in the position of any particle, of order of the Planck length. A modified uncertainty relation of this form is a standard result of superstring…
There are good indications that fundamental physics gives rise to a modified space-momentum uncertainty relation that implies the existence of a minimum length scale. We implement this idea in the scalar field theory that describes density perturbations in flat Robertson-Walker space-time. This leads to a non-linear time-dependent dispersion relation that encodes the effects of Planck scale physics in the inflationary epoch. Unruh type dispersion relations naturally emerge in this approach, while unbounded ones are excluded by the minimum length principle. We also find red-shift induced modifi…
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is known to be connected to the entropic uncertainty principle. This correspondence is obtained employing a Gaussian probability distribution for wave functions associated to the Shannon entropy. Independently, due to quantum gravity effects the Heisenberg uncertainty principle has been extended to a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). In this work, we show that GUP has been derived from considering non-extensive entropies, proposed by one of us. We found that the deformation parameters associated with $S_{+}$ and $S_-$ entropies are negative and posit…
Recently Ali et.al.(2009) proposed a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (or GUP) with a linear term in momentum (accompanied by Plank length). Inspired by this idea here we calculate the quantum corrected value of a Schwarzschild black hole entropy and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with double horizon by utilizing the proposed generalized uncertainty principle. We find that the leading order correction goes with the square root of the horizon area contributing positively. We also find that the prefactor of the logarithmic contribution is negative and the value exactly matches with some earlie…
In this work, we point out an overlooked and subtle feature of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) approach to quantizing gravity: namely that different pairs of modified operators with the same modified commutator, $[\hat{X},\hat{P}] = i \hbar (1+βp^2)$, may have different physical consequences such as having no minimal length at all. These differences depend on how the position and/or momentum operators are modified rather than only on the resulting modified commutator. This provides guidance when constructing GUP models since it distinguishes those GUPs that have a minimal length sc…
We define a set of fully Lorentz-invariant wave packets and show that it spans the corresponding one-particle Hilbert subspace, and hence the whole Fock space as well, with a manifestly Lorentz-invariant completeness relation (resolution of identity). The position-momentum uncertainty relation for this Lorentz-invariant wave packet deviates from the ordinary Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and reduces to it in the non-relativistic limit.
Wald's entropy formula allows one to find the entropy of black holes' event horizon within any diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity. When applied to general relativity, the formula yields the Bekenstein-Hawking result but, for any other gravitational action that departs from the Hilbert action, the resulting entropy acquires an additional multiplicative factor that depends on the global geometry of the background spacetime. On the other hand, the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) has extensively been recently used to investigate corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula…
The Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) has been directly applied to the motion of (macroscopic) test bodies on a given space-time in order to compute corrections to the classical orbits predicted in Newtonian Mechanics or General Relativity. These corrections generically violate the Equivalence Principle. The GUP has also been indirectly applied to the gravitational source by relating the GUP modified Hawking temperature to a deformation of the background metric. Such a deformed background metric determines new geodesic motions without violating the Equivalence Principle. We point out her…
The theory of statistical thermodynamics tells us the equipartition law of energy does not hold in the limit of very low temperatures. It is found the Debye model is very successful in explaining the experimental results for most of the solid objects. Motivated by this fact, we modify the entropic force formula which is proposed very recently. Since the Unruh temperature is proportional to the strength of gravitational field, so the modified entropic force formula is an extension of the Newtonian gravity to weak field. On the contrary, General Relativity extends Newtonian gravity to strong fie…
The Generalized Uncertainty Principle and the related minimum length are normally considered in non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics. Extending it to relativistic theories is important for having a Lorentz invariant minimum length and for testing the modified Heisenberg principle at high energies. In this paper, we formulate a relativistic Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We then use this to write the modified Klein-Gordon, Schrödinger and Dirac equations, and compute quantum gravity corrections to the relativistic hydrogen atom, particle in a box, and the linear harmonic oscillator.
The generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) corrected modified relativistic particle model has been derived in curved space-time. From this modified model, the equation of motion (EM) has been constructed relativistically in terms of the affine parameter ($λ$) or proper time ($τ$) and nonrelativistically in terms of coordinate time ($t$). In this context, the constraint analysis technique has been applied to get the EM. Interestingly, the EM obtained in both cases is the usual one. This result clearly indicates an important fact, that is, consistency of the equivalence principle in the GUP fra…
It is shown that polymer quantization leads to a modified uncertainty principle similar to that obtained from string theory and non-commutative geometry. When applied to quantum field theory on general background spacetimes, corrections to the uncertainty principle acquire a metric dependence. For Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology this translates to a scale factor dependence which gives a large effect in the early universe.
We carry out the Hawking temperature of a (2+1) dimensional circularly symmetric traversable wormhole in the framework of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). Firstly, we introduce the modified Klein-Gordon equation of the spin-0 particle, the modified Dirac equation of the spin-1/2 particle, and the modified vector boson equation of the spin-1 particle in the wormhole background, respectively. Given these equations under the Hamilton-Jacobi approach, we analyze the GUP effect on the tunneling probability of these particles near the trapping horizon, and subsequently, on the Hawking te…
Motivated by the endeavors of Li Xiang and You-Gen Shen on naked singularities, we investigate the validity of the cosmic censorship conjecture in the context of generalized uncertainty principle. In particular, upon considering both linear and quadratic terms of momentum in the uncertainty principle, we first compute the entropy of a massless charged black hole in de Sitter spacetime at a given modified temperature. Then, we compute the corresponding modified cosmological radius and express the black hole electric charge in terms of this modified cosmological radius and, thus, in terms of the…
In this paper we propose a way of determining the subleading corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy by considering a modified generalized uncertainty principle with two parameters. In the context of modified generalized uncertainty principle, coefficients of the correction terms of black hole entropy are written in terms of combination of the parameters. We also calculate corrections to the Stefan-Boltzman law of Hawking radiation corresponding to modified generalized uncertainty principle. By comparing the entropy with one from black holes in string theory compactified on a …
We consider quintessence scalar field cosmology in which the Lagrangian of the scalar field is modified by the Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We show that the perturbation terms which arise from the deformed algebra are equivalent with the existence of a second scalar field, where the two fields interact in the kinetic part. Moreover, we consider a spatially flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker spacetime (FLRW), and we derive the gravitational field equations. We show that the modified equation of state parameter $w_{GUP}$ can cross the phantom divide line; that is $w_{GUP}<-1$. Furt…
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle gets modified by the introduction of an observer independent minimal length. In this work we have considered the resonant gravitational wave detector in the modified uncertainty principle framework where we have used the position momentum uncertainty relation with a quadratic order correction only. We have then used the path integral approach to calculate an action for the bar detector in presence of a gravitational wave and then derived the Lagrangian of the system leading to the equation of motion for the configuration-space position coordinate in one dim…
We have studied the energy band structure of a Dirac particle in presence of a generalised uncertainty principle (GUP). We start from defining a modified momentum operator and derive corresponding modified dispersion relation (MDR) and GUP. Apart from the forbidden band within the range $\pm m$, $m$ being the mass of the particle, we find the existence of additional forbidden bands at the both ends of the spectrum. Such band structure forbids a Dirac particle to penetrate a potential step of sufficient height ($\sim E_P$, $E_P$ being Planck energy). This is also true for massless particle. Unl…
We exhibit a theoretical calculation of the parameter βappearing in the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with only a quadratic term in the momentum. A specific numerical value is obtained by comparing the GUP-deformed Unruh temperature with the one predicted within the framework of Caianiello's theory of maximal acceleration. The physical meaning of this result is discussed in connection with constraints on βpreviously fixed via both theoretical and experimental approaches.
We compute the corrections to the Schwarzschild metric necessary to reproduce the Hawking temperature derived from a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), so that the GUP deformation parameter is directly linked to the deformation of the metric. Using this modified Schwarzschild metric, we compute corrections to the standard General Relativistic predictions for the light deflection and perihelion precession, both for planets in the solar system and for binary pulsars. This analysis allows us to set bounds for the GUP deformation parameter from well-known astronomical measurements.
In this paper, we investigate a novel implication of the non-negligible spacetime curvature at large distances when its effects are expressed in terms of a suitably modified form of the Heisenberg uncertainty relations. Specifically, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between such modified uncertainty principle and the Standard Model Extension (SME), a string-theoretical effective field theory that accounts for both explicit and spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry. This tight correspondence between string-derived effective field theory and modified quantum mechanics with extended un…
This paper is based on the study of the paper of Scardigli and Casadio [Eur. Phys. J. C (2015) 75:425] where the authors computed the light deflection and perihelion precession for the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) modified Schwarzschild metric. In the present work, we computed the gravitational tests such as Shapiro time delay, gravitational redshift, and geodetic precession for the GUP modified Schwarzschild metric. Using the results of Solar system experiments and observations, we obtain upper bounds for the GUP parameter $β$. Finally, we compare our bounds with other bounds in th…
Assume that in a fundamental theory of quantum gravity spatial information is encoded through elements x_i of an associative, complex and possibly noncommutative algebra in which the involution acts as x^*_i = x_i. Without further assumptions it can be shown that such x_i can describe only three different types of short distance structures: I. a lattice, II. a continuum or III. a finite lower bound on the uncertainty in positions, as e.g. described in a stringy uncertainty relation. All other cases are mixtures of the three. We briefly review recent results on the case III short distance struc…
