Let $M$ be a closed manifold and let $N$ be a connected manifold without boundary. For each $k\in\mathbb{N}$ the set of $k$ times continuously differentiable maps between $M$ and $N$ has the structure of a smooth Banach manifold where the underlying manifold topology is the compact-open $C^k$ topology. We provide a detailed and rigorous proof for this important statement which is already partially covered by existing literature.
This paper is devoted to the framework of direct limit of anchored Banach bundles over a convenient manifold which is a direct limit of Banach manifold. In particular we give a criterion of integrability for distributions on such convenient manifolds which are locally direct limits of particular sequences of Banach anchor ranges.
This paper concerns the problem of integrability of non closed distributions on Banach manifolds. We introduce the notion of weak distribution and we look for conditions under which these distributions admit weak integral submanifolds. We give some applications to Banach Lie algebroid and Banach Lie-Poisson manifold. The main results of this paper generalize the works presented in [ChSt], [Nu] and [Gl].
In this paper, we define and study sub-Riemannian structures on Banach manifolds. We obtain extensions of the Chow-Rashevski theorem for exact controllability, and give conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian geodesic flow despite the lack of a Pontryagin Maximum Principle in the infinite dimensional setting.
We give an integrability criterion for a projective limit of Banach distributions on a Fréchet manifold which is a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This leads to a result of integrability of projective limit of involutive bundles on a projective sequence of Banach manifolds. This can be seen as a version of Frobenius Theorem in Fréchet setting. As consequence, we obtain a version of the third Lie theorem for a Fréchet-Lie group which is a submersive projective limit of Banach Lie groups. We also give an application to a sequence of prolongations of a Banach Lie algebroid.
A Banach symmetric space in the sense of O. Loos is a smooth Banach manifold $M$ endowed with a multiplication map $μ\colon M \times M \to M$ such that each left multiplication map $μ_x := μ(x,\cdot)$ (with $x \in M$) is an involutive automorphism of $(M,μ)$ with the isolated fixed point $x$. We show that morphisms of Lie triple systems of symmetric spaces can be uniquely integrated provided the first manifold is 1-connected. The problem is attacked by showing that a continuous linear map between tangent spaces of affine Banach manifolds with parallel torsion and curvature is integrable to an …
An n-dimensional complex manifold is a manifold by biholomorphic mappings between open sets of the finite direct product of the complex number field. On the other hand, when A is a commutative Banach algebra, Lorch gave a definition that an A-valued function on an open set of A is holomorphic. The definition of a holomorphic function by Lorch can be straightforwardly generalized to an A-valued function on an open set of the finite direct product of A. Therefore, a manifold modeled on the finite direct product of A (an n-dimensional A-manifold) is easily defined. However, in my opinion, it seem…
We prove that the classical integrability condition for almost complex structures on finite-dimensional smooth manifolds also works in infinite dimensions in the case of almost complex structures that are real analytic on real analytic Banach manifolds. As an application, we extend some known results concerning existence of invariant complex structures on homogeneous spaces of Banach-Lie groups.
We introduce a notion of p-rough integrator on any Banach manifolds, for any $p\geq 1$, which plays the role of weak geometric Holder p-rough paths in the usual Banach space setting. The awaited results on rough differential equations driven by such objects are proved, and a canonical representation is given if the manifold is equipped with a connection.
This paper presents the theory of non-smooth Lie group actions on chains of Banach manifolds. The rigorous functional analytic spaces are given to deal with quotients of such actions. A hydrodynamical example is studied in detail.
Ambrose, Palais and Singer \cite{Ambrose} introduced the concept of second order structures on finite dimensional manifolds. Kumar and Viswanath \cite{Kumar} extended these results to the category of Banach manifolds. In the present paper all of these results are generalized to a large class of Frechet manifolds. It is proved that the existence of Christoffel and Hessian structures, connections, sprays and dissections are equivalent on those Frechet manifolds which can be considered as projective limits of Banach manifolds. These concepts provide also an alternative way for the study of ordina…
A {1}-structure on a Banach manifold M (with model space E) is an E-valued 1-form on M that induces on each tangent space an isomorphism onto E. Given a Banach principal bundle P with connected base space and a {1}-structure on P, we show that its automorphism group can be turned into a Banach-Lie group acting smoothly on P provided the Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms consists of complete vector fields. As a consequence we show that the automorphism group of a connected geodesically complete affine Banach manifold M can be turned into a Banach-Lie group acting smoothly on M.
We prove a Frobenius theorem for Banach distributions on manifolds that are modelled over locally convex spaces. Moreover, we recall how Frobenius theorems can be applied to infinite-dimensional Lie groups and obtain, that given a Lie subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a Lie group that is modelled over a locally convex space that admits an exponential map, the Lie subalgebra is integrable if it is complemented as a topological vector space and a Banach space with the induced topology.
Given a projective sequence of Banach bundles, each one provided with a of weak symplectic form, we look for conditions under which, the corresponding sequence of weak symplectic forms gives rise to weak symplectic form on the projective limit bundle. Then we apply this results to the tangent bundle of a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This naturally leads to ask about conditions under which the Darboux Theorem is also true on the projective limit of Banach manifolds. We will give some necessary and some sufficient conditions so that such a result is true. Then we discuss why, in general…
For a compact, smooth C^r orbifold (without boundary), we show that the topological structure of the orbifold diffeomorphism group is a Banach manifold for finite r \ge 1 and a Frechet manifold if r=infty. In each case, the local model is the separable Banach (Frechet) space of C^r (C^infty, resp.) orbisections of the tangent orbibundle.
The concept of subdifferentiability is studied in the context of $C^1$ Finsler manifolds (modeled on a Banach space with a Lipschitz $C^1$ bump function). A class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations defined on $C^1$ Finsler manifolds is studied and several results related to the existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions are obtained.
Let $S$ be a compact Hausdorff space and $X$ a complex manifold. We consider the space $C(S,X)$ of continuous maps $S\to X$, and prove that any bounded holomorphic function on this space can be continued to a holomorphic function, possibly multivalued, on a larger space $B(S,X)$ of Borel maps. As an application we prove two theorems about bounded holomorphic functions on $C(S,X)$, one reminiscent of the Monodromy Theorem, the other of Liouville's Theorem.
Let $A$ be a commutative Banach algebra. Let $M$ be a complex manifold on $A$ (an $A$-manifold). Then, we define an $A$-holomorphic vector bundle $(\wedge^kT^*)(M)$ on $M$. For an open set $U$ of $M$, $ω$ is said to be an $A$-holomorphic differential $k$-form on $U$, if $ω$ is an $A$-holomorphic section of $(\wedge^kT^*)(M)$ on $U$. So, if the set of all $A$-holomorphic differential $k$-forms on $U$ is denoted by $Ω_{M}^k(U)$, then $\{Ω_{M}^k(U)\}_{U}$ is a sheaf of modules on the structure sheaf $O_M$ of the $A$-manifold $M$ and the cohomology group $H^l(M,Ω_{M}^k)$ with the coefficient sheaf…
The second order tangent bundle $T^{2}M$ of a smooth manifold $M$ consists of the equivalent classes of curves on $M$ that agree up to their acceleration. It is known that in the case of a finite $n$-dimensional manifold $M$, $T^{2}M$ becomes a vector bundle over $M$ if and only if $M$ is endowed with a linear connection. Here we extend this result to $M$ modeled on an arbitrarily chosen Banach space and more generally to those Fréchet manifolds which can be obtained as projective limits of Banach manifolds. The result may have application in the study of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems…
Suppose M be the projective limit of weak symplectic Banach manifolds \{(M_i,ϕ_{ij})\}_{i,j\in\mathbb N}, where M_i are modeled over reflexive Banach space and σis compatible with the inverse system(defined in the article). We associate to each point x\in M, a Fréchet space H_x(defined in section 3). We prove that if H_x are locally constant, then with certain smoothness and boundedness condition, there exists Darboux chart for the weak symplectic structure.
We construct a cut-off version of nonpertubative closed Bosonic string field theory in the light-cone gauge with imaginary string coupling constant. We show that the partition function is a continuous function of the string coupling constant, and conjecture a relation between the formal power series expansion of this partition function and Riemann Surfaces.
Let us consider a Riemannian manifold $M$ (either separable or non-separable). We prove that, for every $ε>0$, every Lipschitz function $f:M\rightarrow\mathbb R$ can be uniformly approximated by a Lipschitz, $C^1$-smooth function $g$ with $\Lip(g)\le \Lip(f)+ε$. As a consequence, every Riemannian manifold is uniformly bumpable. The results are presented in the context of $C^\ell$ Finsler manifolds modeled on Banach spaces. Sufficient conditions are given on the Finsler manifold $M$ (and the Banach space $X$ where $M$ is modeled), so that every Lipschitz function $f:M\rightarrow \mathbb R$ can …
We describe a new approach to the problem of constructing gluing parameterizations for open neighborhoods of boundary points of moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections over closed four-dimensional manifolds. Our approach employs general results from differential topology for $C^1$ maps of smooth Banach manifolds with corners, providing a method that should apply to other problems in geometric analysis involving the gluing construction of solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations.
We explore the consequences of curvature and torsion on the topology of quaternionic contact manifolds with integrable vertical distribution. We prove a general Myers theorem and establish a Cartan-Hadamard result for almost qc-Einstein manifolds.
In this paper, we systematically investigate the geometry and topology of manifolds with integral radial curvature bounds, and obtain many interesting and important conclusions.
In this note we give sufficient conditions to ensure that the weak Finsler structure of a complete $C^k$ Finsler manifold $M$ is determined by the normed algebra $C_b^k(M)$ of all real-valued, bounded and $C^k$ smooth functions with bounded derivative defined on $M$. As a consequence, we obtain: (i) the Finsler structure of a finite-dimensional and complete $C^k$ Finsler manifold $M$ is determined by the algebra $C_b^k(M)$; (ii) the weak Finsler structure of a separable and complete $C^k$ Finsler manifold $M$ modeled on a Banach space with a Lipschitz and $C^k$ smooth bump function is determin…
We study the topology of a complete asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein manifold such that its conformal boundary has positive Yamabe invariant. We proved that all maps from such manifold into any nonpositively curved manifold are homotopically trivial. Our proof is based on a Bochner type argument on harmonic maps.
We present a compensated compactness theorem in Banach spaces established recently, whose formulation is originally motivated by the weak rigidity problem for isometric immersions of manifolds with lower regularity. As a corollary, a geometrically intrinsic div-curl lemma for tensor fields on Riemannian manifolds is obtained. Then we show how this intrinsic div-curl lemma can be employed to establish the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations, the Cartan formalism, and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian submanifolds.
It is commonly known that in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian Geometry, the metric tensor on a manifold defines a distance function. In Lorentzian Geometry, instead of a distance function it provides causal relations and the Lorentzian time-separation function. Both lead to the definition of the Alexandrov topology, which is linked to the property of strong causality of a space-time. We studied three possible ways to define the Alexandrov topology on sub-Lorentzian manifolds, which usually give different topologies, but agree in the Lorentzian case. We investigated their relationships to each oth…
We compute the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of the homogeneous compact manifolds that can be described as minimal orbits for the action of a real form in a complex flag manifold.
We show that smooth isoperimetric profiles are exceptional for real analytic Riemannian manifolds. For instance, under some extra assumption, this can happen only on topological spheres.
The notion of nonpositive curvature in Alexandrov's sense is extended to include p-uniformly convex Banach spaces. Infinite dimensional manifolds of semi-negative curvature with a p-uniformly convex tangent norm fall in this class on nonpositively curved spaces, and several well-known results, such as existence and uniqueness of best approximations from convex closed sets, or the Bruhat-Tits fixed point theorem, are shown to hold in this setting, without dimension restrictions. Homogeneous spaces G/K of Banach-Lie groups of semi-negative curvature are also studied, explicit estimates on the ge…
A mathematical framework is developed for the analysis of causal fermion systems in the infinite-dimensional setting. It is shown that the regular spacetime point operators form a Banach manifold endowed with a canonical Fréchet-smooth Riemannian metric. The so-called expedient differential calculus is introduced with the purpose of treating derivatives of functions on Banach spaces which are differentiable only in certain directions. A chain rule is proven for Hölder continuous functions which are differentiable on expedient subspaces. These results are made applicable to causal fermion syste…
In the paper `On the Dirac-Frenkel Variational Principle on Tensor Banach Spaces', we provided a geometrical description of manifolds of tensors in Tucker format with fixed multilinear (or Tucker) rank in tensor Banach spaces, that allowed to extend the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle in the framework of topological tensor spaces. The purpose of this note is to extend these results to more general tensor formats. More precisely, we provide a new geometrical description of manifolds of tensors in tree-based (or hierarchical) format, also known as tree tensor networks, which are intersection…
If a differential equation in a Banach manifold is invariant or quasi-invariant under the action of one or more Lie groups, then its stationary points cannot be isolated, so that classical linearized stability theorem does not apply to it. The first main purpose of this paper is to establish a linearized stability theorem for parabolic differential equations in Banach manifolds which are either invariant or quasi-invariant under actions of a number of Lie groups. The second purpose of this paper is to apply this theorem to analyze stability of stationary solutions of some free boundary problem…
We investigate infinitesimal properties of sets of ordered $n$-uples of idempotents in a symmetric Banach $*$-algebra. These sets are called flag manifolds and carry several interesting bundles that hold an important role in some areas of operator theory. In this direction, we introduce and study Stiefel bundles on flag manifolds, which are extensions of the well known Stiefel bundles on Grassmannians. The main ingredient of our investigation is the notion of connection on an infinite-dimensional bundle, and we survey some equivalent ocurrences of such a notion in the literature.
In this note we show that for any proper action of a Banach--Lie group $G$ on a Banach manifold $M$, the corresponding tangent maps $\g \to T_x(M)$ have closed range for each $x \in M$, i.e., the tangent spaces of the orbits are closed. As a consequence, for each free proper action on a Hilbert manifold, the quotient $M/G$ carries a natural manifold structure.
We show how to construct measures on Banach manifolds associated to supersymmetric quantum field theories. These measures are mathematically well-defined objects inspired by the formal path integrals appearing in the physics literature on quantum field theory. We give three concrete examples of our construction. The first example is a family $μ_P^{s,t}$ of measures on a space of functions on the two-torus, parametrized by a polynomial $P$ (the Wess-Zumino-Landau-Ginzburg model). The second is a family $μ_\cG^{s,t}$ of measures on a space $\cG$ of maps from $¶^1$ to a Lie group (the Wess-Zumino…
We study the manifold of all Riemannian metrics over a closed, finite-dimensional manifold. In particular, we investigate the topology on the manifold of metrics induced by the distance function of the L^2 Riemannian metric - so called because it induces an L^2 topology on each tangent space. It turns out that this topology on the tangent spaces gives rise to an L^1-type topology on the manifold of metrics itself. We study this new topology and its completion, which agrees homeomorphically with the completion of the L^2 metric. We also give a user-friendly criterion for convergence (with respe…
We give a method to construct Poisson brackets $\{\cdot,\cdot\}$ on Banach manifolds~$M$, for which the value of $\{f,g\}$ at some point $m\in M$ may depend on higher order derivatives of the smooth functions $f,g\colon M\to{\mathbb R}$, and not only on the first-order derivatives, as it is the case on all finite-dimensional manifolds. We discuss specific examples in this connection, as well as the impact on the earlier research on Poisson geometry of Banach manifolds. Those brackets are counterexamples to the claim that the Leibniz property for any Poisson bracket on a Banach manifold would i…
We give necessary and sufficient topological conditions for the existence of an irreducible ${\rm SO}(3)$-structure on a $5$-manifold. Using these conditions we provide some new examples of $5$-manifolds with an irreducible ${\rm SO}(3)$-structure.
Let $X$ be a (real or complex) Banach space, and $\mathcal{I}(X)$ be the set of all (non-zero and non-identity) idempotents; i.e., bounded linear operators on $X$ whose squares equal themselves. We show that the Banach submanifold $\mathcal{I}(X)$ of $\mathcal{L}(X)$ is a locally trivial analytic affine-Banach bundle over the Grassmann manifold $\mathscr{G}(X)$, via the map $κ$ that sends $Q\in \mathcal{I}(X)$ to $Q(X)$, such that the affine-Banach space structure on each fiber is the one induced from $\mathcal{L}(X)$ (in particular, every fiber is an affine-Banach subspace of $\mathcal{L}(X)$…
We present an approach to Gromov-Witten invariants that works on arbitrary (closed) symplectic manifolds. We avoid genericity arguments and take into account singular curves in the very formulation. The method is by first endowing mapping spaces from (prestable) algebraic curves into the symplectic manifold with the structure of a Banach orbifold and then exhibiting the space of stable $J$-curves (``stable maps'') as zero set of a Fredholm section of a Banach orbibundle over this space. The invariants are constructed by pairing with a homology class on the locally compact topological space of …
This is a survey of topological properties of open, complete nonpositively curved manifolds which may have infinite volume. Topics include topology of ends, restrictions on the fundamental group, as well as a review of known examples.
