For a compact, smooth C^r orbifold (without boundary), we show that the topological structure of the orbifold diffeomorphism group is a Banach manifold for finite r \ge 1 and a Frechet manifold if r=infty. In each case, the local model is the separable Banach (Frechet) space of C^r (C^infty, resp.) orbisections of the tangent orbibundle.
We show that a Laplace isospectral family of two dimensional Riemannian orbifolds, sharing a lower bound on sectional curvature, contains orbifolds of only a finite number of orbifold category diffeomorphism types. We also show that orbifolds of only finitely many orbifold diffeomorphism types may arise in any collection of 2-orbifolds satisfying lower bounds on sectional curvature and volume, and an upper bound on diameter. An argument converting spectral data to geometric bounds shows that the first result is a consequence of the second.
Consider a connected manifold of dimension at least two and the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms that are compactly supported isotopic to the identity. This group acts $n$-transitive: Any tuple of $n$ points can be moved to any other tuple of $n$ points by a compactly supported diffeomorphism that is compactly supported isotopic to the identity. An orbifold diffeomorphism group is typically not $n$-transitive: simple obstructions are given by isomorphism classes of isotropy groups of points. In this paper we investigate the transitivity properties of the group of compactly supporte…
We consider orbifolds as diffeological spaces. This gives rise to a natural notion of differentiable maps between orbifolds, making them into a subcategory of diffeology. We prove that the diffeological approach to orbifolds is equivalent to Satake's notion of a V-manifold and to Haefliger's notion of an orbifold. This follows from a lemma: a diffeomorphism (in the diffeological sense) of finite linear quotients lifts to an equivariant diffeomorphism.
The main result of this paper is a formula for calculating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions. This is done by showing under suitable conditions the existence of a diffeomorphism between the moduli space of the 4-manifold and the moduli space of the quotient 3-orbifold. Two corollaries include b_+>1 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions are simple type and a new proof that the four dimensional invariants of $Y \times S^1$ are equal to the the three dimensional invariants of $Y$. An infinite number of b_+=1 4-manifolds where the Seiberg-…
Taking an elementary and straightforward approach, we develop the concept of a regular value for a smooth map f: O -> P between smooth orbifolds O and P. We show that Sard's theorem holds and that the inverse image of a regular value is a smooth full suborbifold of O. We also study some constraints that the existence of a smooth orbifold map imposes on local isotropy groups. As an application, we prove a Borsuk no retraction theorem for compact orbifolds with boundary and some obstructions to the existence of real-valued orbifold maps from local model orbifold charts.
We give a purely geometrical smooth characterization of closed infrasolv manifolds and orbifolds by showing that, up to diffeomorphism, these are precisely the spaces which admit a collapse with bounded curvature and diameter to compact flat orbifolds. Moreover, we distinguish irreducible smooth fake tori geometrically from standard ones by proving that the former have non-vanishing D-minimal volume.
Given a result of Herman, we provide a new elementary proof of the fact that the connected component of the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms is perfect and hence simple. Moreover, we show that every diffeomorphism $g$, which is sufficiently close to the identity, can be represented as a product of four commutators, $g=[h_1,k_1]\circ...\circ[h_4,k_4]$, where the factors $h_i$ and $k_i$ can be chosen to depend smoothly on $g$.
We deal with a Lie group G acting by isometries on a Riemannian manifold M, such that the quotient M/G is an orbifold, or, equivalently, all slice representations are polar. We show that any smooth orbifold symmetric 2-tensor on M/G lifts to a smooth G-invariant symmetric 2-tensor on M. The proof relies on a fact about the Invariant Theory of finite reflection groups which may be of independent interest.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between suborbifolds and orbifold embeddings. In particular, we give natural definitions of the notion of suborbifold and orbifold embedding and provide many examples. Surprisingly, we show that there are (topologically embedded) smooth suborbifolds which do not arise as the image of a smooth orbifold embedding. We are also able to characterize those suborbifolds which can arise as the images of orbifold embeddings. As an application, we show that a length-minimizing curve (a geodesic segment) in a Riemannian orbifold can always be…
We present a categorical relationship between iterated $S^3$ Sasaki-joins and Bott orbifolds. Then we show how to construct smooth Sasaki-Einstein (SE) structures on the iterated joins. These become increasingly complicated as dimension grows. We give an explicit construction of (infinitely many) smooth SE structures up through dimension eleven, and conjecture the existence of smooth SE structures in all odd dimensions.
We study the action of the diffeomorphism group $\Diff(M)$ on the space of proper immersions $\Imm_{\text{prop}}(M,N)$ by composition from the right. We show that smooth transversal slices exist through each orbit, that the quotient space is Hausdorff and is stratified into smooth manifolds, one for each conjugacy class of isotropy groups.
In this paper we introduce the notion of tangent space TG of a (not necessary smooth) subgroup G of the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) of a compact manifold M. We prove that TG is a Lie subalgebra of the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields on M. The construction can be generalized to subgroups of any (finite or infinite dimensional) Lie groups. The tangent Lie algebra TG introduced this way is a generalization of the classical Lie algebra in the smooth cases. As a working example, we discuss in detail the tangent structure of the holonomy group and fibered holonomy group of Finsler manifolds.
We consider four notions of maps between smooth C^r orbifolds O, P with O compact (without boundary). We show that one of these notions is natural and necessary in order to uniquely define the notion of orbibundle pullback. For the notion of complete orbifold map, we show that the corresponding set of C^r maps between O and P with the C^r topology carries the structure of a smooth C^\infty Banach (r finite)/Frechet (r=infty) manifold. For the notion of complete reduced orbifold map, the corresponding set of C^r maps between O and P with the C^r topology carries the structure of a smooth C^\inf…
Smale proved that the orientation-preserving diffeomorphism group of S^2 has a continuous strong deformation retraction to SO(3). In this paper, we construct such a strong deformation retraction which is diffeologically smooth.
In this paper, given a compact Kcsc orbifolds of any dimension and with nontrivial holomorphic vector fields, we find sufficient conditions on the position of singular points in order to admit a Kcsc desingularization, generalizing the result of the first author with F. Pacard in the case of blowing up smooth points. A series of explicit examples are discussed.
We show that on a closed smooth manifold $M$ equipped with $k$ fiber bundle structures whose vertical distributions span the tangent bundle, every smooth diffeomorphism $f$ of $M$ sufficiently close to the identity can be written as a product $f=f_1... f_k$, where $f_i$ preserves the $i^{\text{th}}$-fiber. The factors $f_i$ can be chosen smoothly in $f$. We apply this result to show that on a certain class of closed smooth manifolds every diffeomorphism sufficiently close to the identity can be written as product of commutators and the factors can be chosen smoothly. Furthermore we get concret…
For a compact manifold M and a differentiable stack \cX presented by a Lie groupoid X, we show the Hom-stack Hom(M,\cX) is presented by a Fréchet-Lie groupoid Map(M,X) and so is an infinite-dimensional differentiable stack. We further show that if \cX is an orbifold, presented by a proper étale Lie groupoid, then Map(M,X) is proper étale and so presents an infinite-dimensional orbifold.
We construct differential equivariant K-theory of representable smooth orbifolds as a ring valued functor with the usual properties of a differential extension of a cohomology theory. For proper submersions (with smooth fibres) we construct a push-forward map in differential equivariant K-theory. Finally, we construct a non-degenerate intersection pairing with values in C/Z for the subclass of smooth orbifolds which can be written as global quotients by a finite group action. We construct a real subfunctor of our theory, where the pairing restricts to a non-degenerate R/Z-valued pairing.
Techniques of gauge theory are used to define and compute an invariant of certain diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds. The invariant vanishes for any diffeomorphism which is smoothly isotopic to the identity. As an application, we give the first example of a diffeomorphism of a simply-connected 4-manifold which is homotopic to the identity map, but not smoothly isotopic to the identity.
We study perturbations of a partially hyperbolic toral automorphism L which is diagonalizable over C and has a dense center foliation. For a small perturbation of L with a smooth center foliation we establish existence of a smooth leaf conjugacy to L. We also show that if a small perturbation of an ergodic irreducible L has smooth center foliation and is bi-Holder conjugate to L, then the conjugacy is smooth. As a corollary, we show that for any symplectic perturbation of such an L any bi-Holder conjugacy must be smooth. For a totally irreducible L with two-dimensional center, we establish a n…
In this note, we prove that any non-collapsing and compact Gromov-Hausdorff limit of Kahler-Einstein manifolds is either smooth or is orbifold outside a subvariety of complex codimension at least 3.
We present two versions of the Egorov theorem for orbifolds. The first one is a straightforward extension of the classical theorem for smooth manifolds. The second one considers an orbifold as a singular manifold, the orbit space of a Lie group action, and deals with the corresponding objects in noncommutative geometry.
In this paper, we classify the three-dimensional contact partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose stable, unstable and central distributions are smooth, and whose non-wandering set equals the whole manifold. We prove that up to a finite quotient or a finite power, they are smoothly conjugated either to the time-one map of an algebraic contact-Anosov flow, or to an affine partially hyperbolic automorphism of a nil-manifold. The rigid geometric structure induced by the three invariant distributions plays a fundamental role in the proof.
Let $X$ be a smooth, compact, oriented $4$-manifold. Building upon work of Li-Liu, Ruberman, Nakamura and Konno, we consider a families version of Seiberg-Witten theory and obtain obstructions to the existence of certain group actions on $X$ by diffeomorphisms. The obstructions show that certain group actions on $H^2(X , \mathbb{Z})$ preserving the intersection form can not be lifted an action of the same group on $X$ by diffeomorphisms. Using our obstructions, we construct numerous examples of group actions which can be realised continuously but can not be realised smoothly for any differenti…
We consider the groups $\operatorname{Diff}_{\mathcal B}(\mathbb R^n)$, $\operatorname{Diff}_{H^\infty}(\mathbb R^n)$, and $\operatorname{Diff}_{\mathcal S}(\mathbb R^n)$ of smooth diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb R^n$ which differ from the identity by a function which is in either $\mathcal B$ (bounded in all derivatives), $H^\infty = \bigcap_{k\ge 0}H^k$, or $\mathcal S$ (rapidly decreasing). We show that all these groups are smooth regular Lie groups.
In this paper, we are concerned with interactions between isoparametric theory and differential topology. Two foliations are called equivalent if there exists a diffeomorphism between the foliated manifolds mapping leaves to leaves. Using differential topology, we obtain several results towards the classification problem of isoparametric foliations up to equivalence. In particular, we show that each homotopy $n$-sphere has the "same" isoparametric foliations as the standard sphere $S^n$ has except for $n=4$, reducing the classification problem on homotopy spheres to that on the standard sphere…
In a previous work it is shown that every finite group $G$ of diffeomorphisms of a connected smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $\geq 2$ equals, up to quotient by the flow, the centralizer of the group of smooth automorphisms of a $G$-invariant complete vector field $X$ (shortly $X$ describes $G$). Here the foregoing result is extended to show that every finite group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ is described, within the group of all homeomorphisms of $M$, by a vector field. As a consequence, it is proved that a finite group of homeomorphisms of a compact connected topological $4$-manifold, whose ac…
Given a compact manifold M, we prove that any bracket generating and invariant under multiplication on smooth functions family of vector fields on M generates the connected component of unit of the group Diff(M).
We give constraints on smooth families of 4-manifolds with boundary using Manolescu's Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type, provided that the fiberwise restrictions of the families to the boundaries are trivial families of 3-manifolds. As an application, we show that, for a simply-connected oriented compact smooth 4-manifold $X$ with boundary with an assumption on the Frøyshov invariant or the Manolescu invariants $α, β, γ$ of $\partial X$, the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X,\partial) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X,\partial)$ between the groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms whic…
It is well-known that an effective orbifold M (one for which the local stabilizer groups act effectively) can be presented as a quotient of a smooth manifold P by a locally free action of a compact lie group K. We use the language of groupoids to provide a partial answer to the question of whether a noneffective orbifold can be so presented. We also note some connections to stacks and gerbes.
Smooth Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS_4 x X^7 and preserving at least half of the supersymmetry have been recently classified. Requiring that amount of supersymmetry forces X to be a spherical space form, whence isometric to the quotient of the round 7-sphere by a freely-acting finite subgroup of SO(8). The classification is given in terms of ADE subgroups of the quaternions embedded in SO(8) as the graph of an automorphism. In this paper we extend this classification by dropping the requirement that the background be smooth, so that X is now allowe…
