Any comment is welcome, especially information on whether the representation results of the tangent bundle of the Grassmannian in Theorem 2 is known in the finite dimensional case
Let $X$ be a (real or complex) Banach space, and $\mathcal{I}(X)$ be the set of all (non-zero and non-identity) idempotents; i.e., bounded linear operators on $X$ whose squares equal themselves. We show that the Banach submanifold $\mathcal{I}(X)$ of $\mathcal{L}(X)$ is a locally trivial analytic affine-Banach bundle over the Grassmann manifold $\mathscr{G}(X)$, via the map $κ$ that sends $Q\in \mathcal{I}(X)$ to $Q(X)$, such that the affine-Banach space structure on each fiber is the one induced from $\mathcal{L}(X)$ (in particular, every fiber is an affine-Banach subspace of $\mathcal{L}(X)$).
Using this, we show that if $K$ is a real Hilbert space, then the assignment $$(E,T)\mapsto T^*\circ P_{E^\bot} + P_{E}, \quad \text{ where } E\in \mathscr{G}(K)\text{ and } T\in \mathcal{L}(E,E^\bot),$$ induces a bi-analytic bijection from the total space of the tangent bundle, $\mathbf{T}(\mathscr{G}(K))$, of $\mathscr{G}(K)$ onto $\mathcal{I}(K)$ (here, $E^\bot$ is the orthogonal complement of $E$, $P_E\in \mathcal{L}(K)$ is the orthogonal projection onto $E$, and $T^*$ is the adjoint of $T$). Notice that this bi-analytic bijection is an affine map on each tangent plane.
We investigate infinitesimal properties of sets of ordered $n$-uples of idempotents in a symmetric Banach $*$-algebra. These sets are called flag manifolds and carry several interesting bundles that hold an important role in some areas of operator theory. In this direction, we introduce and study Stiefel bundles on flag manifolds, which are extensions of the well known Stiefel bundles on Grassmannians. The main ingredient of our investigation is the notion of connection on an infinite-dimensional bundle, and we survey some equivalent ocurrences of such a notion in the literature.
A contact manifold is a manifold equipped with a distribution of codimension one that satisfies a `maximal non-integrability' condition. A standard example of a contact structure is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold, and operators of analytic interest are the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Szego projector onto its kernel. The Heisenberg calculus is the natural pseudodifferential calculus developed originally for the analysis of these operators. We introduce a `non-integrability' condition for a distribution of arbitrary codimension that directly generalizes the definition of a co…
The work of Ray and Singer which introduced analytic torsion, a kind of determinant of the Laplacian operator in topological and holomorphic settings, is naturally generalized in both settings. The couplings are extended in a direct way in the topological setting to general flat bundles and in the holomorphic setting to bundles with (1,1) connections, which using the Newlander-Nirenberg Theorem are seen to be the bundles with both holomorphic and anti-holomorphic structures. The resulting natural generalizations of Laplacians are not always self-adjoint and the corresponding generalizations of…
This article presents a purely functional-analytic construction of the concept of stochastic parallel transport in Hermitian bundles over Riemannian manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a form of the Feynman-Kac formula in vector bundles that is, to our best knowledge, the most general found so far.
By studying the Frölicher-Nijenhuis decomposition of cohomology operators (that is, derivations $D$ of the exterior algebra $Ω(M)$ with $\mathbb{Z}-$degree $1$ and $D^2=0$), we describe new examples of Lie algebroid structures on the tangent bundle $TM$ (and its complexification $T^{\mathbb{C}}M$) constructed from pre-existing geometric ones such as foliations, complex, product or tangent structures. We also describe a class of Lie algebroids on tangent bundles associated to idempotent endomorphisms with nontrivial Nijenhuis torsion.
In this paper, we study Higgs bundles on non-compact Hermitian manifolds. Under some assumptions for the underlying Hermitian manifolds which are not necessarily Kähler, we solve the Hermitian-Einstein equation on analytically stable Higgs bundles.
Using the higher analytic torsion form of Bismut and Lott we construct a characteristic class for smooth sphere bundles. We calculate this class in the case where the sphere bundle comes from a complex vector bundle. Related to these characteristic classes we define nontrivial continuous group cohomology classes of the diffeomorphism group of odd dimensional spheres.
In this paper we investigate the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles over a punctured Riemann surface with varying weights at the punctures. We show that the harmonic metric depends analytically on the weights and the stable Higgs bundle. This gives a Higgs bundle generalisation of a theorem of McOwen on the existence of hyperbolic cone metrics on a punctured surface within a given conformal class, and a generalisation of a theorem of Judge on the analytic parametrisation of these metrics.
This article is devoted to a study of flat orbifold vector bundles. We construct a bijection between the isomorphic classes of proper flat orbifold vector bundles and the equivalence classes of representations of the orbifold fundamental groups of base orbifolds. We establish a Bismut-Zhang like anomaly formula for the Ray-Singer metric on the determine line of the cohomology of a compact orbifold with coefficients in an orbifold flat vector bundle. We show that the analytic torsion of an acyclic unitary flat orbifold vector bundle is equal to the value at zero of a dynamical zeta function whe…
We prove the logarithmic divergence of equivariant analytic torsion for one-parameter degenerations of projective algebraic manifolds, when the coefficient vector bundle is given by a Nakano semi-positive vector bundle twisted by the relative canonical bundle.
In the paper "Direct Images, Fields of Hilbert Spaces, and Geometric Quantization", Lempert and Szőke proved that any flat analytic Hilbert field will induce a hermitian Hilbert bundle and gave an example of a flat Hilbert field that does not induce any Hilbert bundle. In this paper, we will provide an example of an analytic Hilbert field that does not induce any Hilbert bundle.
In this paper, we establish an equality between the analytic torsion introduced by Dar\cite{MR876230} and the orbifold analytic torsion defined by Ma \cite{MR2140438} on a compact manifold with isolated conical singularities which in addition has an orbifold structure. We assume the orbifold flat vector bundle is an honest vector bundle, although the metric on the flat bundle may not be flat.
We introduce and study a canonical quadratic form, called the torsion quadratic form, of the determinant line of a flat vector bundle over a closed oriented odd-dimensional manifold. This quadratic form caries less information than the refined analytic torsion, introduced in our previous work, but is easier to construct and closer related to the combinatorial Farber-Turaev torsion. In fact, the torsion quadratic form can be viewed as an analytic analogue of the Poincare-Reidemeister scalar product, introduced by Farber and Turaev. Moreover, it is also closely related to the complex analytic to…
It is a folklore theorem that the Kuranishi slice method can be used to construct the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles on a closed Riemann surface as a complex space. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof in detail. We also give a direct proof that the moduli space is locally modeled on an affine GIT quotient of a quadratic cone by a complex reductive group.
The moduli space of Higgs bundles can be defined as a quotient of an infinite-dimensional space. Moreover, by the Kuranishi slice method, it is equipped with the structure of a normal complex space. In this paper, we will use analytic methods to show that the moduli space is quasi-projective. In fact, following Hausel's method, we will use the symplectic cut to construct a normal and projective compactification of the moduli space, and hence prove the quasi-projectivity. The main difference between this paper and Hausel's is that the smoothness of the moduli space is not assumed.
The purpose of this paper is first to give an asymptotic formula for the holomorphic analytic torsion forms of a fibration associated with increasing powers of a given line bundle. Secondly, we generalize this formula, thanks to the theory of Toeplitz operators, in the case where the powers of the line bundle is replaced by the direct image of powers of a line bundle on a bigger manifold. In both cases we have to make fiberwise positivity assumption on the line bundle. This results are the family versions of the results of Bimsut and Vasserot on the asymptotic of the holomorphic torsion.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, Geometric Invariant Theory is applied to construct analytic GIT-quotients that are local models for a classifying space of (poly)stable holomorphic vector bundles containing the coarse moduli space of stable bundles as an open subspace. For local models invariant generalized Weil-Petersson forms exist on the parameter spaces, which are restrictions of symplectic forms on smooth ambient spaces. If the underlying Kähler manifold is of Hodge type, then the Weil-Petersson form on the moduli space of stable vector bundles is known to be the Chern form of a certain d…
In general terms, Gelfand duality refers to a correspondence between a geometric, topological, or analytical category, and an algebraic category. For example, in smooth differential geometry, Gelfand duality refers to the topological embedding of a smooth manifold in the topological dual of its algebra of smooth functions. This is generalised here in two directions. First, the topological embeddings for manifolds are generalised to the cases of real analytic and Stein manifolds, using a unified cohomological argument. Second, this type of duality is extended to vector bundles, affine bundles, …
We define an (equivariant) quaternionic analytic torsion for antiselfdual vector bundles on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds, using ideas by Leung and Yi. We compute this torsion for vector bundles on quaternionic homogeneous spaces with respect to any isometry in the component of the identity, in terms of roots and Weyl groups.
Starting with an orientable compact real-analytic Riemannian manifold $(L,g)$ with $χ(L)=0$, we show that a small neighbourhood $ \textrm{Op}(L) $ of the zero section in the cotangent bundle $T^{*}L$ carries a Calabi-Yau structure such that the zero section is an isometrically embedded special Lagrangian submanifold.
We show that the Ruelle dynamical zeta function on a closed odd dimensional locally symmetric space twisted by an arbitrary flat vector bundle has a meromorphic extension to the whole complex plane and that its leading term in the Laurent series at the zero point is related to the regularised determinant of the flat Laplacian of Cappell-Miller. When the flat vector bundle is close to an acyclic and unitary one, we show that the dynamical zeta function is regular at the zero point and that its value is equal to the complex valued analytic torsion of Cappell-Miller. This generalises author's pre…
We first apply the method and results in the previous paper to give a new proof of a result (hold in $ {\bf C}/{\bf Z}$) of Gilkey on the variation of h-invariants associated to non self-adjoint Dirac type operators. We then give an explicit local expression of certain h-invariant appearing in recent papers of Braverman-Kappeler on what they call refined analytic torsion, and propose an alternate formulation of their definition of the refined analytic torsion. A refinement in ${\bf C}$ of the above variation formula is also proposed.
It is shown that the singular set for the Yang-Mills flow on unstable holomorphic vector bundles over compact Kaehler manifolds is completely determined by the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of the initial holomorphic bundle. We assign a multiplicity to irreducible top dimensional components of the singular set of a holomorphic bundle with a filtration by saturated subsheaves. We derive a singular Bott-Chern formula relating the second Chern form of a smooth metric on the bundle to the Chern current of an admissible metric on the associated graded sheaf. This is used to show that the mu…
The continuity, in a suitable topology, of algebraic and geometric operations on real analytic manifolds and vector bundles is proved. This is carried out using recently arrived at seminorms for the real analytic topology. A new characterisation of the topology of the space of real analytic mappings between manifolds is also developed. To characterise these topologies, geometric decompositions of various jet bundles are given by use of connections. These decompositions are then used to characterise many of the standard operations from differential geometry: algebraic operations, tensor evaluat…
We show an equality between the analytic torsion and the absolute value at the zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function on a closed odd dimensional locally symmetric space twisted by an acyclic flat vector bundle obtained by the restriction of a representation of the underlying Lie group. This generalises author's previous result for unitarily flat vector bundles, and the results of Bröcker, Müller, and Wotzke on closed hyperbolic manifolds.
We consider the relative canonical line bundle $K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}}$ and a relatively ample line bundle $(L, e^{-ϕ})$ over the total space $ \mathcal{X}\to \mathcal{T}$ of fibration over the Teichmüller space by Riemann surfaces. We consider the case when the induced metric $\sqrt{-1}\partial\bar{\partial}ϕ|_{\mathcal{X}_y}$ on $\mathcal{X}_y$ has constant scalar curvature and we obtain the curvature asymptotics of $L^2$-metric and Quillen metric of the direct image bundle $E^k=π_*(L^k+K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}})$. As a consequence we prove that the second variation of analytic torsio…
Let $π:\mathcal{X}\to M$ be a holomorphic fibration with compact fibers and $L$ a relatively ample line bundle over $\mathcal{X}$. We obtain the asymptotic of the curvature of $L^2$-metric and Qullien metric on the direct image bundle $π_*(L^k\otimes K_{\mathcal{X}/M})$ up to the lower order terms than $k^{n-1}$ for large $k$. As an application we prove that the analytic torsion $τ_k(\bar{\partial})$ satisfies $\partial\bar{\partial}\log(τ_k(\bar{\partial}))^2=o(k^{n-1})$, where $n$ is the dimension of fibers.
Given a fiber bundle $Z \to M \to B$ and a flat vector bundle $E \to M$ with a compatible action of a discrete group $G$, and regarding $B / G$ as the non-commutative space corresponding to the crossed product algebra, we construct an analytic torsion form as a non-commutative deRham differential form. We show that our construction is well defined under the weaker assumption of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We prove that this torsion form appears in a transgression formula, from which a non-commutative Riamannian-Roch-Grothendieck index formula follows.
In this paper, we construct the index bundle gerbe of a family of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators, refining a construction of Segal. In a special case, we construct a geometric bundle gerbe called the caloron bundle gerbe, which comes with a natural connection and curving, and show that it is isomorphic to the analytically constructed index bundle gerbe. We apply these constructions to certain moduli spaces associated to compact Riemann surfaces, constructing on these moduli spaces, natural bundle gerbes with connection and curving, whose 3-curvature represent Dixmier-Douady classes that are…
Let X be a closed Riemannian manifold and let H\hookrightarrow X be an embedded hypersurface. Let X=X_+ \cup_H X_- be a decomposition of X into two manifolds with boundary, with X_+ \cap X_- = H. In this expository article, surgery -- or gluing -- formulæfor several geometric and spectral invariants associated to a Dirac-type operator ð_X on X are presented. Considered in detail are: the index of ð_X, the index bundle and the determinant bundle associated to a family of such operators, the eta invariant and the analytic torsion. In each case the precise form of the surgery theorems, as well as…
Given a fiber bundle with closed connected fibers, and a family of separating hypersurfaces, we study the behavior of the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form, and the eta form for a duality bundle, under analytic surgery in the sense of Hassell, Mazzeo and Melrose. We find that under the surgery limit, the rescaled heat kernel is non-singular, while both the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form and eta form can be written as the sum of a logarithmic term, which satisfies the Igusa additivity property, the b- Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form (respectively the b- eta form), and an error term coming …
In this paper, we study the dimension of cohomology of semipositive line bundles over Hermitian manifolds, and obtain an asymptotic estimate for the dimension of the space of harmonic $(0,q)$-forms with values in high tensor powers of a semipositive line bundle when the fundamental estimate holds. As applications, we estimate the dimension of cohomology of semipositive line bundles on $q$-convex manifolds, pseudo-convex domains, weakly $1$-complete manifolds and complete manifolds. We also obtain the estimate of cohomology on compact manifolds with semipositive line bundles endowed with a Herm…
Natural analogs of Lie brackets on affine bundles are studied, based on natural examples from differential geometry and analytical mechanics. In particular, a close relation to Lie algebroids and, by a sort of duality, to affine analogs of Poisson structures is established as well as affine versions of the complete lift of a section and the Cartan exterior calculus.
A theory of double affine and special double affine bundles, i.e. differential manifolds with two compatible (special) affine bundle structures, is developed as an affine counterpart of the theory of double vector bundles. The motivation and basic examples come from Analytical Mechanics, where double affine bundles have been recognized as a proper geometrical tool in a frame-independent description of many important systems. Different approaches to the (special) double affine bundles are compared and carefully studied together with the problems of double vector bundle models and hulls, duality…
We compare the higher analytic torsion of Bismut and Lott of a fibre bundle p: M -> B equipped with a flat vector bundle F -> M and a fibre-wise Morse function h on M with a higher torsion T that is constructed in terms of a families Thom-Smale complex associated to h and F, thereby extending previous joint work with Bismut. Under additional conditions on F, the torsion T is related to Igusa's higher Franz-Reidemeister torsion. As an application, we use the higher analytic torsion to detect infinite families of smooth bundles p_i: M -> B with diffeomorphic fibres that are homeomorphic but not …
We consider a closed odd-dimensional oriented manifold $M$ together with an acyclic flat hermitean vector bundle $\cF$. We form the trivial fibre bundle with fibre $M$ over the manifold of all Riemannian metrics on $M$. It has a natural flat connection and a vertical Riemannian metric. The higher analytic torsion form of Bismut/Lott associated to the situation is invariant with respect to the connected component of the identity of the diffeomorphism group of $M$. Using that the space of Riemannian metrics is contractible we define continuous cohomology classes of the diffeomorphism group and i…
An almost complex structure J on a 4-manifold X may be described in terms of a rank 2 vector bundle E. A splitting of J consists of a pair of line bundles spanning E. A hypersurface M in X satisfying a nondegeneracy condition inherits a CR-structure from J and a path geometry from the splitting. Using the Cartan-Kähler theorem we show that locally every real analytic path geometry is induced by an embedding into C^2 equipped with the splitting generated by the real and imaginary part of the standard holomorphic volume form. As a corollary we obtain the well-known fact that every 3-dimensional …
Here we prove the necessary analytic results to construct a Morse theory for the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the space of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface. The main result is that the gradient flow with initial conditions $(A'', ϕ)$ converges to a critical point of this functional, the isomorphism class of which is given by the graded object associated to the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of $(A'', ϕ)$. In particular, the results of this paper show that the failure of hyperkähler Kirwan surjectivity for rank 2 fixed determinant Higgs bundles does not occur because of a f…
We consider a fibration with compact fiber together with a unitarily flat complex vector bundle over the total space. Under the assumption that the fiberwise cohomology admits a filtration with unitary factors, we construct Bismut-Lott analytic torsion classes. The analytic torsion classes obtained satisfy Igusa's and Ohrt's axiomatization of higher torsion invariants. As a consequence, we obtain a higher version of the Cheeger-Müller/Bismut-Zhang theorem: for trivial flat line bundles, the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion classes coincide with the Igusa-Klein higher topological torsions up to a n…
A frame independent formulation of analytical mechanics in the Newtonian space-time is presented. The differential geometry of affine values i.e., the differential geometry in which affine bundles replace vector bundles and sections of one dimensional affine bundles replace functions on manifolds, is used. Lagrangian and hamiltonian generating objects, together with the Legendre transformation independent on inertial frame are constructed.
