Ambrose, Palais and Singer \cite{Ambrose} introduced the concept of second order structures on finite dimensional manifolds. Kumar and Viswanath \cite{Kumar} extended these results to the category of Banach manifolds. In the present paper all of these results are generalized to a large class of Frechet manifolds. It is proved that the existence of Christoffel and Hessian structures, connections, sprays and dissections are equivalent on those Frechet manifolds which can be considered as projective limits of Banach manifolds. These concepts provide also an alternative way for the study of ordinary differential equations on non-Banach infinite dimensional manifolds. Concrete examples of the structures are provided using direct and flat connections.
The main purposes of this article are to extend our previous results on homogeneous sprays to arbitrary (generalized) sprays, to show that locally diffeomorphic exponential maps can be defined for any (generalized) spray, and to give a (possibly nonlinear) covariant derivative for any (possibly nonlinear) connection. In the process, we introduce vertically homogeneous connections. Unlike homogeneous connections, these allow us to include Finsler spaces among the applications. We provide significant support for the prospect of studying nonlinear connections via (generalized) sprays. One of the …
In this paper for a given Banach, possibly infinite dimensional, manifold $M$ we focus on the geometry of its iterated tangent bundle $T^rM$, $r\in {\N}\cup\{\infty\}$. First we endow $T^rM$ with a canonical atlas using that of $M$. Then the concepts of vertical and complete lifts for functions and vector fields on $T^rM$ are defined which they will play a pivotal role in our next studies i.e. complete lift of (semi)sprays. Afterward we supply $T^\infty M$ with a generalized Fréchet manifold structure and we will show that any vector field or (semi)spray on $M$, can be lifted to a vector field…
Adopting the global approach to tangent bundles of order two established in[1], we develop this approach to find new results. We also generalize various results of [3], [4] and [6] to the geometry of tangent bundles of order two.
Based on a self-contained, coordinate-free exposition of the necessary concepts and tools of spray and Finsler geometry (with detailed proofs), we derive new results among others on the consequences of the direction-independence of the Landsberg tensor and the stretch tensor of a Finsler manifold. We show that an at least 3-dimensional Finsler manifold with vanishing projected Berwald tensor is a Berwald manifold. To obtain consequences in two dimensions, we transcript Berwald's classical theory on 2-dimensional Finsler manifolds in our setup. We prove criteria and necessary conditions for Fin…
The pseudoconvex and disprisoning conditions for geodesics of linear connections are extended to the solution curves of general homogeneous sprays. The main result is that pseudoconvexity and disprisonment are jointly stable in the fine topology on the space of all homogeneous sprays of any degree of homogeneity.
We propose a unified approach to the theory of connections in the geometry of sprays and Finsler metrics which, in particular, gives a simple explanation of the well-known fact that all the classical Finslerian connections provide exactly the same formulas appearing in the calculus of variations.
A manifold with an arbitrary affine connection is considered and the geodesic spray associated with the connection is studied in the presence of a Lie group action. In particular, results are obtained that provide insight into the structure of the reduced dynamics associated with the given invariant affine connection. The geometry of the frame bundle of the given manifold is used to provide an intrinsic description of the geodesic spray. A fundamental relationship between the geodesic spray, the tangent lift and the vertical lift of the symmetric product is obtained, which provides a key to un…
We establish that over a C^{2,1} manifold the exponential map of any Lipschitz connection or spray determines a local Lipeomophism and that, furthermore, reversible convex normal neighborhoods do exist. To that end we use the method of Picard-Lindelof approximation to prove the strong differentiability of the exponential map at the origin and hence a version of Gauss' Lemma which does not require the differentiability of the exponential map. Contrary to naive differential degree counting, the distance functions are shown to gain one degree and hence to be C^{1,1}. As an application to mathemat…
Given a principal bundle on an orientable closed surface with compact connected structure group, we endow the space of based gauge equivalence classes of smooth connections relative to smooth based gauge transformations with the structure of a Fréchet manifold. Using Wilson loop holonomies and a certain characteristic class determined by the topology of the bundle, we then impose suitable constraints on that Fréchet manifold that single out the based gauge equivalence classes of central Yang-Mills connections but do not directly involve the Yang-Mills equation. We also explain how our theory y…
The main purpose of this note is the study of the total space of a holomorphic Lie algebroid $E$. The paper is structured in three parts. In the first section we briefly introduce basic notions on holomorphic Lie algebroids. The local expressions are written and the complexified holomorphic bundle is introduced. The second section is a little broader and includes two approaches to study the geometry of complex manifold $E.$ The first part contains the study of the tangent bundle $T_{C}E=T^{\prime }E\oplus T^{\prime \prime }E$ and its link, via tangent anchor map, with the complexified tangent …
We endow projective (resp. direct) limits of Banach tensor structures with Fréchet (resp. convenient) structures and study adapted connections to $G$-structures in both frameworks. This situation is illustrated by a lot of examples.
The main purpose of this article is to introduce a comprehensive, unified theory of the geometry of all connections. We show that one can study a connection via a certain, closely associated second-order differential equation. One of the most important results is our extended Ambrose-Palais-Singer correspondence. We extend the theory of geodesic sprays to certain second-order differential equations, show that locally diffeomorphic exponential maps can be defined for all, and give a full theory of (possibly nonlinear) covariant derivatives for (possibly nonlinear) connections. In the process, w…
The tangent bundle $T^kM$ of order $k$, of a smooth Banach manifold $M$ consists of all equivalent classes of curves that agree up to their accelerations of order $k$. For a Banach manifold $M$ and a natural number $k$ first we determine a smooth manifold structure on $T^kM$ which also offers a fiber bundle structure for $(π_k,T^kM,M)$. Then we introduce a particular lift of linear connections on $M$ to geometrize $T^kM$ as a vector bundle over $M$. More precisely based on this lifted nonlinear connection we prove that $T^kM$ admits a vector bundle structure over $M$ if and only if $M$ is endo…
Let (M,g) be a compact, connected and oriented Riemannian manifold. We denote D the space of smooth probability density functions on M. In this paper, we show that the Frechet manifold D is equipped with a Riemannian metric g^{D} and an affine connection \nabla^{D} which are infinite dimensional analogues of the Fisher metric and exponential connection in the context of information geometry. More precisely, we use Dombrowski's construction together with the couple (g^{D},\nabla^{D}) to get a (non-integrable) almost Hermitian structure on D, and we show that the corresponding fundamental 2-form…
The second order tangent bundle $T^{2}M$ of a smooth manifold $M$ consists of the equivalent classes of curves on $M$ that agree up to their acceleration. It is known that in the case of a finite $n$-dimensional manifold $M$, $T^{2}M$ becomes a vector bundle over $M$ if and only if $M$ is endowed with a linear connection. Here we extend this result to $M$ modeled on an arbitrarily chosen Banach space and more generally to those Fréchet manifolds which can be obtained as projective limits of Banach manifolds. The result may have application in the study of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems…
Given a compact Kähler manifold, the space $\mathcal H$ of its (relative) Kähler potentials is an infinite dimensional Fréchet manifold, on which Mabuchi and Semmes have introduced a natural connection $\nabla$. We study certain Lagrangians on $T\mathcal H$, in particular Finsler metrics, that are parallel with respect to the connection. We show that geodesics of $\nabla$ are paths of least action; under suitable conditions the converse also holds; and prove a certain convexity property of the least action. This generalizes earlier results of Calabi, Chen, and Darvas.
A local normal form theorem for smooth equivariant maps between Fréchet manifolds is established. Moreover, an elliptic version of this theorem is obtained. The proof these normal form results is inspired by the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction for dynamical systems and by the Kuranishi method for moduli spaces, and uses a slice theorem for Fréchet manifolds as the main technical tool. As a consequence of this equivariant normal form theorem, the abstract moduli space obtained by factorizing a level set of the equivariant map with respect to the group action carries the structure of a Kuranishi spac…
