We classify closed, simply-connected cohomogeneity-one Alexandrov spaces in dimensions $5$, $6$ and $7$. We show that every closed, simply-connected smooth $n$-orbifold, $2\leq n\leq 7$ with a cohomogeneity one action is equivariantly homeomorphic to a smooth good orbifold of cohomogeneity one.
We obtain a structure theorem for closed, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces and we classify closed, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces in dimensions 3 and 4. As a corollary, we obtain the classification of closed, $n$-dimensional, cohomogeneity one Alexandrov spaces admitting an isometric $T^{n-1}$ action. In contrast to the 1- and 2-dimensional cases, where it is known that an Alexandrov space is a topological manifold, in dimension 3 the classification contains, in addition to the known cohomogeneity one manifolds, the spherical suspension of $RP^2$, which is not a manifold.
We give a characterization of those Alexandrov spaces admitting a cohomogeneity one action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ for which the action is Cohen--Macaulay. This generalizes a similar result for manifolds to the singular setting of Alexandrov spaces where, in contrast to the manifold case, we find several actions which are not Cohen--Macaulay. In fact, we present results in a slightly more general context. We extend the methods in this field by a conceptual approach on equivariant cohomology via rational homotopy theory using an explicit rational model for a double mapping cylinder…
In the present paper, we determine the topologies of three-dimensional closed Alexandrov spaces which converge to lower dimensional spaces in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology.
We obtain a topological and weakly equivariant classification of closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with an effective isometric circle action. As an application of the classification we prove a version of the Borel conjecture for closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with circle symmetry.
We prove a reverse isoperimetric inequality for domains homeomorphic to a disc with the boundary of curvature bounded below lying in two-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature $\geqslant c$. We also study the equality case.
We study closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower Ricci curvature bound in the $\mathsf{CD}^*(K,N)$ sense, focusing our attention on those with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature. First, we show that a closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(2,3)$-Alexandrov space must be homeomorphic to a spherical space form or to the suspension of $\mathbb{R}P^2$. We then classify closed three-dimensional $\mathsf{CD}^*(0,3)$-Alexandrov spaces.
We obtain sharp lower bounds on the radii of inscribed balls for strictly convex isoperimetric domains lying in a 2-dimensional Alexandrov metric space of curvature bounded below. We also characterize the case when such bounds are attained.
We construct for every finite-dimensional Alexandrov space $A$ and every point $p \in A$ a $2$-convex function $f_p$ in a small neighborhood around $p$, which approximates $\operatorname{dist}_p^2$ up to second order. Moreover, the function $f_p$ can be lifted to Gromov-Hausdorff close Alexandrov spaces of the same dimension.
We obtain a topological and equivariant classification of closed, connected three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces admitting a local isometric circle action. We show, in particular, that such spaces are homeomorphic to connected sums of some closed 3-manifold with a local circle action and finitely many copies of the suspension of the real projective plane.
In this paper we give a characterization of the possible homology groups that can occur for compact simply connected cohomogeneity one manifolds in dimensions seven and lower.
We show that a certain family of cohomogeneity one manifolds does not admit an invariant metric of nonnegative sectional curvature, unless it admits one with positive curvature. As a consequence, the classification of nonnegatively curved cohomogeneity one manifolds in dimension 7 is reduced to only one further family of candidates
We prove that any finite dimensional Alexandrov space with a lower curvature bound is locally Lipschitz contractible. As applications, we obtain a sufficient condition for solving the Plateau problem in an Alexandrov space considered by Mese and Zulkowski.
We show that every finite-dimensional Alexandrov space X with curvature bounded from below embeds canonically into a product of an Alexandrov space with the same curvature bound and a Euclidean space such that each affine function on X comes from an affine function on the Euclidean space.
We prove that sufficiently collapsed, closed and irreducible three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces are modeled on one of the eight three-dimensional Thurston geometries. This extends a result of Shioya and Yamaguchi, originally formulated for Riemannian manifolds, to the Alexandrov setting.
The aim of this paper is to classify the cohomogeneity one conformal actions on the three-dimensional essential Riemannian spaces, up to orbit equivalence. Among other results, the representations of all connected Lie groups acting with cohomogeneity one or zero within the full conformal group of a given three-dimensional essential Riemannian space are determined, up to conjugacy, and the orbits are specified up to conformal equivalence.
We consider 6-dimensional strict nearly Kaehler manifolds acted on by a compact, cohomogeneity one automorphism group G. We classify the compact manifolds of this class up to G-diffeomorphisms. We also prove that the manifold has constant sectional curvature whenever the group G is simple.
We show that any n-dimensional nonnegatively curved Alexandrov space with the maximal possible number of extremal points is isometric to a quotient space of Euclidean n -space by an action of a crystallographic group. We describe all such actions.
We study isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the (n+1)-dimensional Minkowski space up to orbit-equivalence. We give examples of isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space whose orbit spaces are non-Hausdorff. We show that there exist isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of an n-dimensional degenerate subspace and not orbit-equivalent on this degenerate subspace. We classify isometric cohomogeneity one actions on 2- and 3-dimensional Minkowski spaces up to orbit-equivalence.
The aim of this paper is to classify the cohomogeneity one conformal actions on the 3-dimensional Einstein universe $Ein^{1;2}$ , up to orbit equivalence. In a recent paper [21], we studied the unique (up to conjugacy) irreducible action of $PSL(2; \mathbb{R})$ on $Ein^{1;2}$ and we showed that the action is of cohomogeneity one. In the present paper, we determine all the subgroups of $Conf(Ein^{1;2})$, up to conjugacy, acting reducibly and with cohomogeneity one on $Ein^{1;2}$. We show that any cohomogeneity one reducible action on $Ein^{1;2}$ induces a fixed point in the 4-dimensional projec…
A cohomogeneity one manifold is a manifold with the action of a compact Lie group, whose quotient is one dimensional. Such manifolds are of interest in Riemannian geometry, in the context of nonnegative sectional curvature, as well as in other areas of geometry and in physics. In this paper we classify compact simply connected cohomogeneity one manifolds in dimensions 5, 6 and 7. We also show that all such manifolds admit metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature, with the possible exception of two families of manifolds.
In this paper we prove that in the class of metric measure spaces with Alexandrov curvature bounded from below the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD(K,N)$ with $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in [1,\infty)$ is preserved under doubling and gluing constructions.
In this paper we give a classification of closed and connected Lie groups, up to conjugacy in $Iso({\mathbb{R}^3_1})$, acting by cohomogeneity one on the three dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^3_1$ in both cases, proper and nonproper actions. Then we determine causal characters of the orbits.
In this paper, we classify 8-dimensional manifolds M admitting an SU(3) action of cohomogeneity one such that (i) M is simply connected and the orbit space M/G is isomorphic to [0,1], and (ii) M/G=S^1 and the principal orbits are simply connected. We discuss applications to the study of the group manifold SU(3) and to 8-dimensional quaternion-Kahler spaces.
For a path in a compact finite dimensional Alexandrov space $X$ with curv $\ge κ$, the two basic geometric invariants are the length and the turning angle (which measures the closeness from being a geodesic). We show that the sum of the two invariants of any loop is bounded from below in terms of $κ$, the dimension, diameter and Hausdorff measure of $X$. This generalizes a basic estimate of Cheeger on the length of a closed geodesic in closed Riemannian manifold ([Ch], [GP1,2]). To see that the above result also generalizes and improves an analogous of the Cheeger type estimate in Alexandrov g…
We study the intrinsic geometry of a one-dimensional complex space provided with a Kaehler metric in the sense of Grauert. We show that if K is an upper bound for the Gaussian curvature on the regular locus, then the intrinsic metric has curvature at most K in the sense of Alexandrov.
We give an exhaustive description of all simply connected odd dimensional cohomogeneity one manifolds that can possibly support an invariant metric with positive sectional curvature. Among the known examples of odd dimensional manifolds with positive curvature, apart from spheres, there are two infinite families among the 7-dimensional Eschenburg spaces and 13-dimensional Bazaikin spaces and one isolated 7-dimensional Berger space with this property. In addition to these examples, it turns out that only one isolated 7-manifold, and two infinite 7-dimensional families, potentially admit invaria…
We study three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a lower curvature bound, focusing on extending three classical results on three-dimensional manifolds: First, we show that a closed three-dimensional Alexandrov space of positive curvature, with at least one topological singularity, must be homeomorphic to the suspension of the real projective plane; we use this to classify, up to homeomorphism, closed, positively curved Alexandrov spaces of dimension three. Second, we classify closed three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of nonnegative curvature. Third, we study the well-known Poincaré Conjectur…
Let M be a six dimensional manifold, endowed with a cohomogeneity one action of G= SU_2 x SU_2, and M_reg its subset of regular points. We show that M_reg admits a smooth, 2-parameter family of G-invariant, non-isometric strict nearly Kaehler structures and that a 1-parameter subfamily of such structures smoothly extend over a singular orbit of type S^3. This determines a new class of examples of nearly Kaehler structures on TS^3
In this paper we discuss the sufficient and necessary conditions for multiple Alexandrov spaces being glued to an Alexandrov space. We propose a Gluing Conjecture, which says that the finite gluing of Alexandrov spaces is an Alexandrov space, if and only if the gluing is by path isometry along the boundaries and the tangent cones are glued to Alexandrov spaces. This generalizes Petrunin's Gluing Theorem. Under the assumptions of the Gluing Conjecture, we classify the $2$-point gluing over $(n-1,ε)$-regular points as local separable gluing and the gluing near un-glued $(n-1,ε)$-regular points a…
Let M be a compact, connected and simply-connected Riemannian manifold, and suppose that G is a compact, connected Lie group acting on M by isometries. The dimension of the space of orbits is called the cohomogeneity of the action. If the direct sum of the higher homotopy groups of M, tensored with the field of rational numbers, is a finite-dimensional vector space over the rationals, then M is said to be rationally elliptic. It is known that M is rationally elliptic if it supports an action of cohomogeneity zero or one. When the cohomogeneity is two, this general result is no longer true. How…
In this paper we give a classification of closed and connected Lie groups, up to conjugacy in $Iso({\bf adS_3})$, acting by cohomogeneity one on the three dimensional anti de sitter space ${\bf adS_3}$. Then we determine causal characters of the orbits and the orbit spaces, up to homeomorphism, in both cases, proper and nonproper actions. When the action is proper, we show that there is no exceptional orbit and causal characters of the principal orbits are the same.
The aim of this paper is to study cohomogeneity one isometric linear actions on the $p+q$-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$. It is proved that the natural isometric action of the nilpotent factor of an Iwasawa decomposition of $SO(p,q)$ is not of cohomogeneity one. The orbits of cohomogeneity one actions of some subgroups of a maximal parabolic subgroup of the isometry group of $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ are determined and it is proved that there exist cohomogeneity one isometric actions on $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of a $p$-dimensional degener…
A Kähler metric is called central if the determinant of its Ricci endomorphism is constant. For the case in which this constant is zero, we study on $4$-manifolds the existence of complete metrics of this type which are cohomogeneity one for three unimodular $3$-dimensional Lie groups: $SU(2)$, the group of Euclidean plane motions $E(2)$ and a quotient by a discrete subgroup of the Heisenberg group $\mathrm{nil}_3$. We obtain a complete classification for $SU(2)$, and some existence results for the other two groups, in terms of specific solutions of an associated ODE system.
An isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold is of cohomogeneity one if the corresponding orbit space is one-dimensional. In this article we develop a conceptual approach to the classification of cohomogeneity one actions on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type in terms of orbit equivalence. As a consequence, we find many new examples of cohomogeneity one actions on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. We apply our conceptual approach to derive explicit classifications of cohomogeneity one actions on some symmetric spaces.
We classify, up to orbit equivalence, all cohomogeneity one actions on the hyperbolic planes over the complex, quaternionic and Cayley numbers, and on the complex hyperbolic spaces of dimension greater than two. For the quaternionic hyperbolic spaces of dimension greater than two we reduce the classification problem to a problem in quaternionic linear algebra and obtain partial results. For real hyperbolic spaces, this classification problem was essentially solved by Elie Cartan.
Let $M_j$ be a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvature bound below collapsing to a compact Alexandrov space $X$ of dimension $k$. Suppose that all but finitely many points of $X$ are $(k,δ)$-strained and that the space of directions at each exceptional point contains $k+1$ directions making obtuse angles with each other. We prove that $M_j$ admits a structure of locally trivial fibration over $X$ for sufficiently large $j$. The same is true for collapsing sequences of Alexandrov spaces such that the infimum of the volume of the spaces of directions is sufficiently large relat…
We study sequences of integral current spaces $(X_j,d_j,T_j)$ such that the integral current structure $T_j$ has weight $1$ and no boundary and, all $(X_j,d_j)$ are closed Alexandrov spaces with curvature uniformly bounded from below and diameter uniformly bounded from above. We prove that for such sequences either their limits collapse or the Gromov-Hausdorff and Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat limits agree. The latter is done showing that the lower $n$ dimensional density of the mass measure at any regular point of the Gromov-Hausdorff limit space is positive by passing to a filling volume est…
The equivariant Gromov--Hausdorff convergence of metric spaces is studied. Where all isometry groups under consideration are compact Lie, it is shown that an upper bound on the dimension of the group guarantees that the convergence is by Lie homomorphisms. Additional lower bounds on curvature and volume strengthen this result to convergence by monomorphisms, so that symmetries can only increase on passing to the limit.
We show how to view the equations for a cohomogeneity one Ricci soliton as a Hamiltonian system with a constraint. We investigate conserved quantities and superpotentials, and use this to find some explicit formulae for Ricci solitons not of Kähler type in five dimensions.
In this paper we classify, up to orbit equivalence, cohomogeneity one actions of connected closed Lie subgroups of $U(1,n)$ on the $(2n+1)$-dimensional anti de Sitter spacetime $AdS^{2n+1}$. We also give some new examples of nonproper cohomogeneity one actions on $AdS^{n+1}$ and determine parabolic Lie subgroups of $SO(2,n)$ and their orbits in $AdS^{n+1}$
It is proved the generalization of Toponogov theorem about the length of the curve in two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds in the case of two-dimensional Alexandrov spaces.
Let $M^n$, $n \in \{4,5,6\}$, be a compact, simply connected $n$-manifold which admits some Riemannian metric with non-negative curvature and an isometry group of maximal possible rank. Then any smooth, effective action on $M^n$ by a torus $T^{n-2}$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an isometric action on a normal biquotient. Furthermore, it follows that any effective, isometric circle action on a compact, simply connected, non-negatively curved four-dimensional manifold is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an effective, isometric action on a normal biquotient.
We construct several infinite families of nonnegatively curved manifolds of low cohomogeneity and small dimension which can be distinguished by their cohomology rings. In particular, we exhibit an infinite family of eight-dimensional cohomogeneity one manifolds of nonnegative curvature with pairwise non-isomorphic complex cohomology rings.
We prove a structure theorem for closed topological manifolds of cohomogeneity one; this result corrects an oversight in the literature. We complete the equivariant classification of closed, simply connected cohomogeneity one topological manifolds in dimensions $5$, $6$, and $7$ and obtain topological characterizations of these spaces. In these dimensions, these manifolds are homeomorphic to smooth manifolds.
Let a compact Lie group act isometrically on a non-collapsing sequence of compact Alexandrov spaces with fixed dimension and uniform lower curvature and upper diameter bounds. If the sequence of actions is equicontinuous and converges in the equivariant Gromov--Hausdorff topology, then the limit space is equivariantly homeomorphic to spaces in the tail of the sequence. As a consequence, the class of Riemannian orbifolds of dimension $n$ defined by a lower bound on the sectional curvature and the volume and an upper bound on the diameter has only finitely many members up to orbifold homeomorphi…
