Presence of a high-dimensional stochastic parameter space with discontinuities poses major computational challenges in analyzing and quantifying the effects of the uncertainties in a physical system. In this paper, we propose a stochastic collocation method with adaptive mesh refinement (SCAMR) to deal with high dimensional stochastic systems with discontinuities. Specifically, the proposed approach uses generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansion with Legendre polynomial basis and solves for the gPC coefficients using the least squares method. It also implements an adaptive mesh (element) refinement strategy which checks for abrupt variations in the output based on the second order gPC approximation error to track discontinuities or non-smoothness. In addition, the proposed method involves a criterion for checking possible dimensionality reduction and consequently, the decomposition of the full-dimensional problem to a number of lower-dimensional subproblems. Specifically, this criterion checks all the existing interactions between input dimensions of a specific problem based on the high-dimensional model representation (HDMR) method, and therefore automatically provides the subproblems which only involve interacting dimensions. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated using both smooth and non-smooth function examples with input dimensions up to 300, and the approach is compared against other existing algorithms.

Mesh adaptivity is a useful tool for efficient solution to partial differential equations in very complex geometries. In the present paper we discuss the use of polygonal mesh refinement in order to tackle two common issues: first, adaptively refine a provided good quality polygonal mesh preserving quality, second, improve the quality of a coarse poor quality polygonal mesh during the refinement process on very complex domains. For finite element methods and triangular meshes, convergence of a posteriori mesh refinement algorithms and optimality properties have been widely investigated, wherea…
We present a simple and efficient MATLAB implementation of the local refinement for polygonal meshes. The purpose of this implementation is primarily educational, especially on the teaching of adaptive virtual element methods.
This work concerns adaptive refinement procedures for meshes of polygonal virtual elements. Specifically, refinement procedures previously proposed by the authors for structured meshes are generalized for the challenging case of arbitrary element geometries arising in unstructured/Voronoi discretizations. Here, structured and unstructured meshes are considered and are created via Voronoi tessellation of sets of structured and unstructured seed points respectively. The novel mesh refinement procedures for both structured and unstructured meshes allow for accurate and efficient application of th…
We show that an optimal finite element mesh refinement algorithm for a prototypical elliptic PDE can be learned by a recurrent neural network with a fixed number of trainable parameters independent of the desired accuracy and the input size, i.e., number of elements of the mesh. Moreover, for a general class of PDEs with solutions which are well-approximated by deep neural networks, we show that an optimal mesh refinement strategy can be learned by recurrent neural networks. This includes problems for which no optimal adaptive strategy is known yet.
We present an administration technique for the bookkeeping of adaptive mesh refinement on (hyper-)rectangular meshes. Our technique is a unified approach for h-refinement on 1-, 2- and 3D domains, which is easy to use and avoids traversing the connectivity graph of the ancestry of mesh cells. Due to the employed rectangular mesh structure, the identification of the siblings and the neighbouring cells is greatly simplified. The administration technique is particularly designed for smooth meshes, where the smoothness is dynamically used in the matrix operations. It has a small memory footprint t…
In the discretization of differential problems on complex geometrical domains, discretization methods based on polygonal and polyhedral elements are powerful tools. Adaptive mesh refinement for such kind of problems is very useful as well and states new issues, here tackled, concerning good quality mesh elements and reliability of the simulations. In this paper we numerically investigate optimality with respect to the number of degrees of freedom of the numerical solutions obtained by the different refinement strategies proposed. A geometrically complex geophysical problem is used as test prob…
We propose and analyse a fully adaptive strategy for solving elliptic PDEs with random data in this work. A hierarchical sequence of adaptive mesh refinements for the spatial approximation is combined with adaptive anisotropic sparse Smolyak grids in the stochastic space in such a way as to minimize the computational cost. The novel aspect of our strategy is that the hierarchy of spatial approximations is sample dependent so that the computational effort at each collocation point can be optimised individually. We outline a rigorous analysis for the convergence and computational complexity of t…
A family of arbitrarily high-order fully discrete space-time finite element methods are proposed for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation based on the scalar auxiliary variable formulation, which consists of a Gauss collocation temporal discretization and the finite element spatial discretization. The proposed methods are proved to be well-posed and conserving both mass and energy at the discrete level. An error bound of the form $O(h^p+τ^{k+1})$ in the $L^\infty(0,T;H^1)$-norm is established, where $h$ and $τ$ denote the spatial and temporal mesh sizes, respectively, and $(p,k)$ is the degree o…
A general adaptive refinement strategy for solving linear elliptic partial differential equation with random data is proposed and analysed herein. The adaptive strategy extends the a posteriori error estimation framework introduced by Guignard and Nobile in 2018 (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 56, 3121--3143) to cover problems with a nonaffine parametric coefficient dependence. A suboptimal, but nonetheless reliable and convenient implementation of the strategy involves approximation of the decoupled PDE problems with a common finite element approximation space. Computational results obtained using suc…
Adaptive meshing is a fundamental component of adaptive finite element methods. This includes refining and coarsening meshes locally. In this work, we are concerned with the red-green-blue refinement strategy in two dimensions and its counterpart - coarsening. In general, coarsening algorithms are mostly based on an explicitly given refinement history. In this work, we present a coarsening algorithm on adaptive red-green-blue meshes in two dimensions without explicitly knowing the refinement history. To this end, we examine the local structure of these meshes, find an easy-to-verify criterion …
We present an adaptive refinement algorithm for T-splines on unstructured 2D meshes. While for structured 2D meshes, one can refine elements alternatingly in horizontal and vertical direction, such an approach cannot be generalized directly to unstructured meshes, where no two unique global mesh directions can be assigned. To resolve this issue, we introduce the concept of direction indices, i.e., integers associated to each edge, which are inspired by theory on higher-dimensional structured T-splines. Together with refinement levels of edges, these indices essentially drive the refinement sch…
We propose a novel mesh refinement scheme based on signal processing for boundary integral simulations of inviscid droplet dynamics with axial symmetry. A key idea is to directly access the Fourier coefficients of a principal curvature as a function of the arclength through a natural change of variables. The trapezoidal rule is applied to those Fourier-type integrals and the resulting formula fits in the framework of the non-uniform fast Fourier transform. This observation enables to efficiently use an envelope analysis and smoothing filter to generate guidelines for mesh refinement in two sin…
A multilevel adaptive refinement strategy for solving linear elliptic partial differential equations with random data is recalled in this work. The strategy extends the a posteriori error estimation framework introduced by Guignard and Nobile in 2018 (SIAM J. Numer. A suboptimal, but nonetheless reliable and convenient implementation of the strategy involves approximation of the decoupled PDE problems with a common finite element approximation space. Computational results obtained using such a single-le…
Adaptive mesh refinement is a key component of efficient unstructured space-time finite element methods. Underlying any adaptive mesh refinement scheme is, of course, a method for local refinement of simplices. However, simplex bisection algorithms in dimension greater than three have strict mesh preconditions which can be hard to satisfy. We prove that certain four-dimensional simplex space-time meshes can be handled with a relaxed precondition. Namely, we prove that if a tetrahedral mesh is 4-colorable, then we can produce a 4D simplex mesh which always satisfies the bisection precondition. …
This paper considers the approximation of partial differential equations with a point collocation framework based on high-order local maximum-entropy schemes (HOLMES). In this approach, smooth basis functions are computed through an optimization procedure and the strong form of the problem is directly imposed at the collocation points, reducing significantly the computational times with respect to the Galerkin formulation. Furthermore, such a method is truly meshless, since no background integration grids are necessary. The validity of the proposed methodology is verified with supportive numer…

Subsequently, we introduce a modular object-oriented structure for our smart AMR algorithm. Then we present procedures used for the training of a smart AMR mode…
Positivity-Preserving and Entropy-Stable Oscillation-Eliminating DGSEM for the Compressible Euler Equations on Curvilinear Meshes with Adaptive Mesh Refinement
We develop a fourth order accurate finite difference method for the three dimensional elastic wave equation in isotropic media with the piecewise smooth material property. In our model, the material property can be discontinuous at curved interfaces. The governing equations are discretized in second order form on curvilinear meshes by using a fourth order finite difference operator satisfying a summation-by-parts property. The method is energy stable and high order accurate. The highlight is that mesh sizes can be chosen according to the velocity structure of the material so that computational…
The Poisson-Boltzmann equation is a widely used model to study the electrostatics in molecular solvation. Its numerical solution using a boundary integral formulation requires a mesh on the molecular surface only, yielding accurate representations of the solute, which is usually a complicated geometry. Here, we utilize adjoint-based analyses to form two goal-oriented error estimates that allows us to determine the contribution of each discretization element (panel) to the numerical error in the solvation free energy. This information is useful to identify high-error panels to then refine them …
