Adaptive mesh refinement techniques are nowadays an established and powerful tool for the numerical discretization of PDE's. In recent years, wavelet bases have been proposed as an alternative to these techniques. The main motivation for the use of such bases in this context is their good performances in data compression and the approximation theoretic foundations which allow to analyze and optimize these performances. We shall discuss these theoretical foundations, as well as one of the approaches which has been followed in developing efficient adaptive wavelet solvers. We shall also discuss the similarities and differences between wavelet methods and adaptive mesh refinement.
In this work, the Haar wavelet method for the coupled non-linear transient PDE-ODEs system with the Neumann boundary condition has been proposed. The capability of the method in handling multiple jump discontinuities in the coefficients and parameters of the transient and coupled PDE-ODEs system is brought out through a series of 1D/2D/3D test problems. The method is easy to implement, computationally efficient, and compares well with conventional methods like the finite element method. Convergence analysis of the method has been carried out and apriori error is found to be exponential order i…
We introduce a new efficient algorithm for Helmholtz problems in perforated domains with the design of the scheme allowing for possibly large wavenumbers. Our method is based upon the Wavelet-based Edge Multiscale Finite Element Method (WEMsFEM) as proposed recently in [14]. For a regular coarse mesh with mesh size H, we establish O(H) convergence of this algorithm under the resolution assumption, and with the level parameter being sufficiently large. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated by extensive 2-dimensional numerical tests including those motivated by photonic crystals.
Multiscale and multiphysics problems need novel numerical methods in order for them to be solved correctly and predictively. To that end, we develop a wavelet based technique to solve a coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) while resolving features on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The algorithm exploits the multiresolution nature of wavelet basis functions to solve initial-boundary value problems on finite domains with a sparse multiresolution spatial discretization. By leveraging wavelet theory and embedding a predictor-corrector procedure within the…
The multiscale complexity of modern problems in computational science and engineering can prohibit the use of traditional numerical methods in multi-dimensional simulations. Therefore, novel algorithms are required in these situations to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) with features evolving on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. To meet these challenges, we present a multiresolution wavelet algorithm to solve PDEs with significant data compression and explicit error control. We discretize in space by projecting fields and spatial derivative operators onto wavelet basis fu…

In this work, we investigate the performance CutFEM as a high fidelity solver as well as we construct a competent and economical reduced order solver for PDE-constrained optimization problems in parametrized domains that live in a fixed background geometry and mesh. Its effectiveness and reliability will be assessed through its application for the numerical solution of quadratic optimization problems with elliptic equations as constraints, examining an archetypal case. The reduction strategy will be via Proper Orthogonal Decomposition of suitable FE snapshots, using an aggregated state and adj…
We present and analyze a novel wavelet-Fourier technique for the numerical treatment of multidimensional advection-diffusion-reaction equations based on the CORSING (COmpRessed SolvING) paradigm. Combining the Petrov-Galerkin technique with the compressed sensing approach, the proposed method is able to approximate the largest coefficients of the solution with respect to a biorthogonal wavelet basis. Namely, we assemble a compressed discretization based on randomized subsampling of the Fourier test space and we employ sparse recovery techniques to approximate the solution to the PDE. In this p…
In the present work, we consider weakly-singular integral equations arising from linear second-order strongly-elliptic PDE systems with constant coefficients, including, e.g., linear elasticity. We introduce a general framework for optimal convergence of adaptive Galerkin BEM. We identify certain abstract properties for the underlying meshes, the corresponding mesh-refinement strategy, and the ansatz spaces that guarantee convergence at optimal algebraic rate of an adaptive algorithm driven by the weighted-residual error. These properties are satisfied, e.g., for discontinuous piecewise polyno…
We show that an optimal finite element mesh refinement algorithm for a prototypical elliptic PDE can be learned by a recurrent neural network with a fixed number of trainable parameters independent of the desired accuracy and the input size, i.e., number of elements of the mesh. Moreover, for a general class of PDEs with solutions which are well-approximated by deep neural networks, we show that an optimal mesh refinement strategy can be learned by recurrent neural networks. This includes problems for which no optimal adaptive strategy is known yet.

Mainstream numerical Partial Differential Equation (PDE) solvers require discretizing the physical domain using a mesh. Mesh movement methods aim to improve the accuracy of the numerical solution by increasing mesh resolution where the solution is not well-resolved, whilst reducing unnecessary resolution elsewhere. However, mesh movement methods, such as the Monge-Ampere method, require the solution of auxiliary equations, which can be extremely expensive especially when the mesh is adapted frequently. In this paper, we propose to our best knowledge the first learning-based end-to-end mesh mov…
Models incorporating uncertain inputs, such as random forces or material parameters, have been of increasing interest in PDE-constrained optimization. In this paper, we focus on the efficient numerical minimization of a convex and smooth tracking-type functional subject to a linear partial differential equation with random coefficients and box constraints. The approach we take is based on stochastic approximation where, in place of a true gradient, a stochastic gradient is chosen using one sample from a known probability distribution. Feasibility is maintained by performing a projection at eac…

We consider a mesh-based approach for training a neural network to produce field predictions of solutions to parametric partial differential equations (PDEs). This approach contrasts current approaches for "neural PDE solvers" that employ collocation-based methods to make point-wise predictions of solutions to PDEs. This approach has the advantage of naturally enforcing different boundary conditions as well as ease of invoking well-developed PDE theory -- including analysis of numerical stability and convergence -- to obtain capacity bounds for our proposed neural networks in discretized domai…

The computational complexity of classical numerical methods for solving Partial Differential Equations (PDE) scales significantly as the resolution increases. As an important example, climate predictions require fine spatio-temporal resolutions to resolve all turbulent scales in the fluid simulations. This makes the task of accurately resolving these scales computationally out of reach even with modern supercomputers. As a result, current numerical modelers solve PDEs on grids that are too coarse (3km to 200km on each side), which hinders the accuracy and usefulness of the predictions. In this…
We describe a high order technique to generate quadrilateral decompositions and meshes for complex two dimensional domains using spectral elements in a field guided procedure. Inspired by cross field methods, we never actually compute crosses. Instead, we compute a high order accurate guiding field using a continuous Galerkin (CG) or discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spectral element method to solve a Laplace equation for each of the field variables using the open source code Nektar++. The spectral method provides spectral convergence and sub-element resolution of the fields. The DG approximation al…

As the resolution of digital images increase significantly, the processing of images becomes more challenging in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we consider image segmentation by solving a partial differentiation equation (PDE) model based on the Mumford-Shah functional. We develop a new algorithm by combining anisotropic mesh adaptation for image representation and finite element method for solving the PDE model. Comparing to traditional algorithms solved by finite difference method, our algorithm provides faster and better results without the need to resizing the images to l…

We study dynamical Galerkin schemes for evolutionary partial differential equations (PDEs), where the projection operator changes over time. When selecting a subset of basis functions, the projection operator is non-differentiable in time and an integral formulation has to be used. We analyze the projected equations with respect to existence and uniqueness of the solution and prove that non-smooth projection operators introduce dissipation, a result which is crucial for adaptive discretizations of PDEs, e.g., adaptive wavelet methods. For the Burgers equation we illustrate numerically that thr…
