v.2: improved exposition following the referee's suggestions, and included a new result (Thm 6.1) giving a more refined construction of real inflection on complete series on hyperelliptic curves that includes non-maximal cases. To appear in Transactions of the AMS
Given a real hyperelliptic algebraic curve $X$ with non-empty real part and a real effective divisor $\mc{D}$ arising via pullback from $\mathbb{P}^1$ under the hyperelliptic structure map, we study the real inflection points of the associated complete real linear series $|\mc{D}|$ on $X$.
To do so we use Viro's patchworking of real plane curves, recast in the context of some Berkovich spaces studied by M. Jonsson. Our method gives a simpler and more explicit alternative to limit linear series on metrized complexes of curves, as developed by O. Amini and M. Baker, for curves embedded in toric surfaces.

We introduce the notion of tropical curves of hyperelliptic type. These are tropical curves whose Jacobian is isomorphic to that of a hyperelliptic tropical curve, as polarized tropical abelian varieties. We show that this property depends only on the underlying graph of a tropical curve and is preserved when passing to genus $\geq 2$ connected minors. The main result is an excluded minors characterization of tropical curves of hyperelliptic type.
Abstractly, tropical hyperelliptic curves are metric graphs that admit a two-to-one harmonic morphism to a tree. They also appear as embedded tropical curves in the plane arising from triangulations of polygons with all interior lattice points collinear. We prove that hyperelliptic graphs can only arise from such polygons. Along the way we will prove certain graphs do not embed tropically in the plane due to entirely combinatorial obstructions, regardless of whether their metric is actually hyperelliptic.
{\it $(N,γ)$-hyperelliptic} semigroups were introduced by Fernando Torres to encapsulate the most salient properties of Weierstrass semigroups associated to totally-ramified points of $N$-fold covers of curves of genus $γ$. Torres characterized $(2,γ)$-hyperelliptic semigroups of maximal weight whenever their genus is large relative to $γ$. Here we do the same for $(3,γ)$-hyperelliptic semigroups, and we formulate a conjecture about the general case whenever $N \geq 3$ is prime.
Given a real elliptic curve $E$ with non-empty real part and $[D]\in \mbox{Pic}^2 E$ its $g_2^1$, we study the real inflection points of distinguished subseries of the complete real linear series $|\mathcal{L}_\mathbb{R}(kD)|$ for $k\geq 3$. We define {\it key polynomials} whose roots index the ($x$-coordinates of) inflection points of the linear series, away from the points where $E$ ramifies over $\mathbb{P}^1$. These fit into a recursive hierarchy, in the same way that division polynomials index torsion points. Our study is motivated by, and complements, an analysis of how inflectionary loc…
In the paper, we investigate properties of the nine-dimensional variety of the inflection points of the plane cubic curves. The description of local monodromy groups of the set of inflection points near singular cubic curves is given. Also, it is given a detailed description of the normalizations of the surfaces of the inflection points of plane cubic curves belonging to general two-dimensional linear systems of cubic curves, The vanishing of the irregularity a smooth manifold birationally isomorphic to the variety of the inflection points of the plane cubic curves is proved.
The paper describes behavior of log-inflection points of curves in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ under passing to the tropical limit. We show that such points accumulate by pairs at the midpoints of bounded edges in the limiting tropical curve. Log-inflection points are points of inflection with respect to the parallelization of $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ given by the multiplicative group law.
In this largely-expository note, we describe a class of divisors on elliptic curves that index the inflection points of linear series arising (as subspaces of holomorphic sections) from line bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ via pullback along the canonical 2-to-1 projection. Associated to each inflection divisor on an elliptic curve $E_λ: y^2= x(x-1)(x-λ)$, there is an associated {\it inflectionary curve} in (the projective compactification of) the affine plane in coordinates $x$ and $λ$. These inflectionary curves have remarkable features; among other things, they lead directly to an explicit conjec…
We study the moduli space of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves via the weighted projective space of binary octavics. This enables us to create a database of all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$, of weighted moduli height $\mathcal h =1$.
In the study of hyperelliptic curve cryptography, presentations of semi-reduced divisors on a hyperelliptic curve play important roles. In this note, we give an interpretation for such presentations from view points of Gröbner bases. As applications, (i) we give a method to construct weak $n$-contact curves and (ii) we study plane curves satisfying quasi-toric relations of type $(2, n, 2)$
By the geometry of the 3-fold quadric we show that the coarse moduli space of genus g ineffective spin hyperelliptic curves with two marked points is a rational variety for every $g \geq 2$.
We find a new presentation of the stack of hyperelliptic curves of odd genus as a quotient stack and we use it to compute its integral Chow ring by means of equivariant intersection theory.
In this paper we give a complete description of the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathscr{H}_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed hyperelliptic curves, lifting relations and generators from the Chow ring of $\mathscr{H}_g$. We also give a geometric interpretation for the generators.
We give an algorithm to compute $(\ell,\ell,\ell)$-isogenies from the Jacobians of genus three hyperelliptic curves to the Jacobians of non-hyperelliptic curves. An important application is to reduce the discrete logarithm problem in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve to the corresponding problem in the Jacobian of a non-hyperelliptic curve.
We compute the cohomological invariants with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ of the stack $\mathscr{H}_3$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $3$ over an algebraically closed field.
In this paper, we study a Howe curve $C$ in positive characteristic $p \geq 3$ which is of genus 3 and is hyperelliptic. We will show that if $C$ is superspecial, then its standard form is maximal or minimal over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ without taking its $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$-form.
We describe explicitly all hyperelliptic limits of quadrics through smooth canonical curves of genus $g$ in ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$. Also, we construct an open embedding of the blow up of a ${\rm PGL}_g$-bundle over the moduli space of curves of genus $g$ along the hyperelliptic locus into the blow up of the canonical Hilbert scheme of ${\mathbb P}^{g-1}$ along the closure of the locus of canonical ribbons, which are certain double thickenings of rational normal curves introduced and studied by Bayer and Eisenbud.
This paper is the second in a series of four papers aiming to describe the (almost integral) Chow ring of $\Mbar_3$, the moduli stack of stable curves of genus $3$. In this paper, we introduce the moduli stack $\Htilde_g^r$ of hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves and generalize the theory of hyperelliptic stable curves to hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves. In particular, we prove that $\Htilde_g^r$ is a smooth algebraic stacks which can be described using cyclic covers of twisted curves of genus $0$ and it embeds in $\Mtilde_g^r$ (the moduli stack of $A_r$-stable curves) as the closure of the mod…
We study hyperelliptic curves arising from Chebyshev polynomials. The aim of this paper is to characterize the pairs $(q,d)$ such that the hyperelliptic curve $\cC$ over a finite field $\FF_{q^2}$ corresponding to the equation $y^2 = φ_{d}(x)$ is maximal over the finite field $\FF_{q^2}$ of cardinality $q^2$. Here $φ_{d}(x)$ denotes the Chebyshev polynomial of degree $d$. The same question is studied for the curves corresponding to $y^2=(x\pm 2) φ_{d}(x)$, and also for $y^2=(x^2-4)φ_d(x)$.
We compute the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth, non-hyperelliptic curves of genus three. We obtain this result by computing the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth plane quartics, by means of equivariant intersection theory.
