Every quadratic form represents 0; therefore, if we take any number of quadratic forms and ask which integers are simultaneously represented by all members of the collection, we are guaranteed a nonempty set. But when is that set more than just the "trivial" 0? We address this question in the case of integral, positive- definite, reduced, binary quadratic forms. For forms of the same discriminant, we can use the structure of the underlying class group. If, however, the forms have different discriminants, we must apply class field theory.
We estimate the number of primes represented by a general quadratic polynomial with discriminant $Δ$, assuming that the corresponding real character is exceptional.
In this article, we establish an average behaviour of the normalised Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms supported at the integers represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$. We also obtain a quantitative result for the number of sign changes of the sequence of the normalised Fourier coefficients $λ_{f}(n)$ of the Hecke eigenforms $f$ where $n$ is represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$ in…
In his paper Almost-Primes Represented by Quadratic Polynomials, Iwaniec proved that the polynomial n^2 + 1 takes on values with at most two prime factors (counted with multiplicity) infinitely often. He states that "in order to avoid technical complications, we shall restrict our proof to the polynomial n^2 + 1.". In this exposition, we follow Iwaniec's proof and show that for any irreducible quadratic polynomial G(n) (satisfying some obviously necessary hypotheses), G(n) has at most two prime factors for infinitely many values of n.
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with integer coefficients. We study the problem of giving bounds on the largest positive integer $n$ that is locally represented by $Q$ but not represented. Assuming that $n$ is relatively prime to $D(Q)$, the determinant of the Gram matrix of $Q$, we show that $n$ is represented provided that \[ n \gg \max \{ N(Q)^{3/2 + ε} D(Q)^{5/4 + ε}, N(Q)^{2 + ε} D(Q)^{1 + ε} \}. \] Here $N(Q)$ is the level of $Q$. We give three other bounds that hold under successively weaker local conditions on $n$. These results are proven by bounding the Peter…
Let $f$ be a primitive positive definite integral binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ and let $π_f(x)$ be the number of primes up to $x$ which are represented by $f$. We prove several types of upper bounds for $π_f(x)$ within a constant factor of its asymptotic size: unconditional, conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), and for almost all discriminants. The key feature of these estimates is that they hold whenever $x$ exceeds a small power of $D$ and, in some cases, this range of $x$ is essentially best possible. In particular, if $f$ is reduced then this optimal range…
We show that the class of every primitive indefinite binary quadratic form is naturally represented by an infinite graph (named çark) with a unique cycle embedded on a conformal annulus. This cycle is called the spine of the çark. Every choice of an edge of a fixed çark specifies an indefinite binary quadratic form in the class represented by the çark. Reduced forms in the class represented by a çark correspond to some distinguished edges on its spine. Gauss reduction is the process of moving the edge in the direction of the spine of the çark. Ambiguous and reciprocal classes are represented b…
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form $f$ is called regular if it represents all integers that are locally represented. It is known that there are only finitely many regular ternary quadratic forms up to isometry. However, there are infinitely many equivalence classes of regular quadratic forms of rank $n$ for any integer $n$ greater than or equal to $4$. A regular quadratic form $f$ is called new if there does not exist a proper subform $g$ of $f$ such that the set of integers that are represented by $g$ is equal to the set of integers that are represented by $f$. In this article,…
Let $D<0$ be a fundamental discriminant and $h(D)$ be the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$. Let $R(X,D)$ be the number of classes of the binary quadratic forms of discriminant $D$ which represent a prime number in the interval $[X,2X]$. Moreover, assume that $π_{D}(X)$ is the number of primes, which split in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ with norm in the interval $[X,2X].$ We prove that $$ \Big(\frac{π_D(X)}{π(X)}\Big)^2 \ll \frac{R(X,D)}{h(D)}\Big(1+\frac{h(D)}{π(X)}\Big), $$ where $π(X)$ is the number of primes in the interval $[X,2X]$ and the implicit constant in $\ll$ is independent of $D$ …
We consider a binary quadratic variant of the Titchmarsh divisor problem and give an asymptotic formula for $\sum_{p^2+q^2\leq N} τ(p^2+q^2+1)$, where $p,q$ are primes.
The purpose of this paper is to present a collection of interesting generating functions for partitions which have connections to positive definite binary quadratic forms. In establishing our results we obtain some new Bailey pairs.
For a congruence subgroup $Γ$, we define the notion of $Γ$-equivalence on binary quadratic forms which is the same as proper equivalence if $Γ= \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. We develop a theory on $Γ$-equivalence such as the finiteness of $Γ$-reduced forms, the isomorphism between $Γ_0(N)$-form class group and the ideal class group, $N$-representation of integers, and $N$-genus of binary quadratic forms. As an application, we deal with representations of integers by binary quadratic forms under certain congruence condition on variables.
Let $Q(x,y,z)$ be an integral quadratic form with determinant coprime to some modulus $q$. We show that $q\mid Q$ for some non-zero integer vector $(x,y,z)$ of length $O(q^{5/8+\varepsilon})$, for any fixed $\varepsilon>0$. Without the coprimality condition on the determinant one could not achieve an exponent below $2/3$. The proof uses a bound for short character sums involving binary quadratic forms, which extends a result of Chang.
Let $-d$ be a a negative discriminant and let $T$ vary over a set of representatives of the integral equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-d$. We prove an asymptotic formula for $d \to \infty$ for the average over $T$ of the number of representations of $T$ by an integral positive definite quaternary quadratic form and obtain results on averages of Fourier coefficients of linear combinations of Siegel theta series. We also find an asymptotic bound from below on the number of binary forms of fixed discriminant $-d$ which are represented by a given quaternary f…
We prove an upper bound for the length of an arithmetic progression represented by an irreducible integral binary quadratic form or a norm form, which depends only on the form and the progression's common difference. For quadratic forms, this improves significantly upon an earlier result of Dey and Thangadurai.
In this note we show that for a given irreducible binary quadratic form $f(x,y)$ with integer coefficients, whenever we have $f(x,y) = f(u,v)$ for integers $x,y,u,v$, there exists a rational automorphism of $f$ which sends $(x,y)$ to $(u,v)$.
In this paper we generalize the result of Fouvry and Iwaniec dealing with prime values of the quadratic form $x^2 + y^2$ with one input restricted to a thin subset of the integers. We prove the same result with an arbitrary primitive positive definite binary quadratic form. In particular, for any positive definite binary quadratic form $F$ and binary linear form $G$, there exist infinitely many $\ell, m\in\mathbb{Z}$ such that both $F(\ell, m)$ and $G(\ell, m)$ are primes as long as there are no local obstructions.
Let $f(x,y)=ax^2+bxy+cy^2$ be a binary quadratic form with integer coefficients. For a prime $p$ not dividing the discriminant of $f$, we say $f$ is completely $p$-primitive if for any non-zero integer $N$, the diophantine equation $f(x,y)=N$ has always an integer solution $(x,y)=(m,n)$ with $(m,n,p)=1$ whenever it has an integer solution. In this article, we study various properties of completely $p$-primitive binary quadratic forms. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a definite binary quadratic form $f$ to be completely $p$-primitive.
In 1957 N.C. Ankeny provided a new proof of the three squares theorem using geometry of numbers. This paper generalizes Ankeny's technique, proving exactly which integers are represented by $x^2 + 2y^2 + 2z^2$ and $x^2 + y^2 + 2z^2$ as well as proving sufficient conditions for an integer to be represented by $x^2+y^2+3z^2$ and $x^2 + y^2 + 7z^2$.
Extending the notion of regularity introduced by Dickson in 1939, a positive definite ternary integral quadratic form is said to be spinor regular if it represents all the positive integers represented by its spinor genus (that is, all positive integers represented by any form in its spinor genus). Jagy conducted an extensive computer search for primitive ternary quadratic forms that are spinor regular, but not regular, resulting in a list of 29 such forms. In this paper, we will prove that there are no additional forms with this property.
In this paper, we prove that for $d=3,\dots,8$, every natural number can be written as $t_x+t_y+3t_z+dt_w$, where $x$, $y$, $z$, and $w$ are nonnegative integers and $t_k=k(k+1)/2$ $(k=0,1,2,\ldots)$ is a triangular number. Furthermore, we study mixed sums of triangular numbers and certain binary quadratic forms.
A positive-definite integral quadratic form is called regular if it represents every positive integer which is locally represented. In this article, we classify all regular diagonal quadratic forms of rank greater than 3.
We study the ``imaginary" binary quadratic form equations ax^2+bxy+cy^2+g=0 over k[t] in rational function fields, showing that a condition with respect to the Artin reciprocity map, is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for integral solutions of the equation.
We prove that the set of CM points on the Shimura curve associated to an Eichler order inside an indefinite quaternion $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, is in bijection with the set of certain classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms, where $p$ is a prime dividing the discriminant of the quaternion algebra. The classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms are obtain by the action of a discrete and cocompact subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ arising from the $p$-adic uniformization of the Shimura curve. We finally compute families of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms associated to an infinite fa…
It is shown that, under some mild technical conditions, representations of prime numbers by binary quadratic forms can be computed in polynomial complexity by exploiting Schoof's algorithm, which counts the number of $\mathbb F_q$-points of an elliptic curve over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. Further, a method is described which computes representations of primes from reduced quadratic forms by means of the integral roots of polynomials over $\mathbb Z$. Lastly, some progress is made on the still-unsettled general problem of deciding which primes are represented by which classes of quadratic f…
InfoMod is a new software and application devoted to the modular group, PSL2(Z). It has algorithms that deals with the classical correspondences among continued fractions, geodesics on the modular surface and binary quadratic forms. In addition the software implements the recently discovered representation of Gauss' indefinite binary quadratic forms and their classes in terms of certain infinite planar graphs (dessins) called çarks. InfoMod illustrates various aspects of these forms, i.e. Gauss' reduction algorithm, the representation problem of forms, ambiguous and reciprocal forms. It can be…
Sarnak obtained the asymptotic formula of the sum of the class numbers of indefinite binary quadratic forms from the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group. In the present paper, we show several asymptotic formulas of partial sums of the class numbers by using the prime geodesic theorems for the congruence subgroups of the modular group.
Given an integer $d \ge 2$, what is the least $r$ so that there is a set of binary quadratic forms $\{f_1,\dots,f_r\}$ for which $\{f_j^d\}$ is non-trivially linearly dependent? We show that if $r \le 4$, then $d \le 5$, and for $d \ge 4$, construct such a set with $r = \lfloor d/2\rfloor + 2$. Many explicit examples are given, along with techniques for producing others.
Fix a quadratic order over the ring of integers. An embedding of the quadratic order into a quaternionic order naturally gives an integral binary hermitian form over the quadratic order. We show that, in certain cases, this correspondence is a discriminant preserving bijection between the isomorphism classes of embeddings and integral binary hermitian forms.
For each positive integer $n$, let $g_Δ(n)$ be the smallest positive integer $g$ such that every complete quadratic polynomial in $n$ variables which can be represented by a sum of odd squares is represented by a sum of at most $g$ odd squares. In this paper, we analyze $g_Δ(n)$ by studying representations of integral quadratic forms by sums of squares with certain congruence condition. We prove that the growth of $g_Δ(n)$ is at most an exponential of $\sqrt{n}$, which is the same as the best known upper bound on the $g$-invariants of the original quadratic Waring's problem. We also determine …
Let $X$ be a sufficiently large positive integer. We prove that one may choose a subset $S$ of primes with cardinality $O(\log X)$, such that a positive proportion of integers less than $X$ can be represented by $x^2 + p y^2$ for at least one of $p \in S$.
