Group action is a standard approach to obtain $t$-designs. In this approach, selecting a specific permutation group with a certain degree of transitivity or homogeneity and a proper set of base blocks is important for obtaining $t$-$(v, k, λ)$ designs with computable parameters $t, v, k$, and $λ$. The general affine group $\GA_1(q)$ is $2$-transitive on $\gf(q)$, and has relatively a small size. In this paper, we determine the parameters of a number of infinite families of $2$-designs obtained from the action of the group $\GA_1(q)$ on certain base blocks, and demonstrate that some of the $2$-designs give rise to linear codes with optimal or best parameters known. Open problems are also presented.
In this paper we introduce a construction of directed strongly regular graphs from smaller ones using equitable partitions. Each equitable partition of a single DSRG satisfying several conditions leads to an infinite family of directed strongly regular graphs. We construct in this way dozens of infinite families. For order at most 110, we confirm the existence of DSRGs for 30 previously open parameter sets.
The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has attracted a lot of attention for both directions. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, by determining the weight distributions of two classes of linear codes, we derive infinite families of $2$-designs from the supports of codewords with a fixed weight in these codes, and explicitly obtain their parameters.
Erdös-Hajnal conjecture states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every undirected graph on $ n $ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or a stable set of size at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ ε(H) > 0 $ such that every $H-$free $n-$vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $ n^{ε(H)} $. This conjecture is known to hold for a few infinite families of tournaments. In this paper we construct two n…
We construct two infinite families of locally toroidal chiral polytopes of type $\{4,4,4\}$, with $1024m^2$ and $2048m^2$ automorphisms for every positive integer $m$, respectively. The automorphism groups of these polytopes are solvable groups, and when $m$ is a power of $2$, they provide examples with automorphism groups of order $2^n$ where $n$ can be any integer greater than $9$. (On the other hand, no chiral polytopes of type $[4,4,4]$ exist for $n \leq 9$.) In particular, our two families give a partial answer to a problem proposed by Schulte and Weiss in [Problems on polytopes, their gr…
Combinatorial $t$-designs have wide applications in coding theory, cryptography, communications and statistics. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may give a $t$-design. In this paper, we first determine the weight distribution of a class of linear codes derived from the dual of extended cyclic code with two non-zeros. We then obtain infinite families of $2$-designs and explicitly compute their parameters from the supports of all the codewords with a fixed weight in the codes. By simple counting argument, we obtain exponentially many $2$-designs.
Brändén and Claesson introduced mesh patterns to provide explicit expansions for certain permutation statistics as linear combinations of (classical) permutation patterns. The first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns was conducted by Hilmarsson et al., while the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns was conducted by the first two authors. In this paper, we provide far-reaching generalizations for 8 known distribution results and 5 known avoidance results related to mesh patterns by giving distribution or avoidance formulas for certain infinite families of mesh…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper we provide a construction which gives four non-Schurian association schemes for every $p\geq 5$ and two for $p=3$. This construction is explained using incidences between points and lines of a biaffine plane and we also provide a pure algebraic model for it with the aid of finite Heisenberg groups. The obtained results are discussed in a more wide framework.
It is conjectured by Berge and Fulkerson that every bridgeless cubic graph has six perfect matchings such that each edge is contained in exactly two of them. H$\ddot{a}$gglund constructed two graphs Blowup$(K_4, C)$ and Blowup$(Prism, C_4)$. Based on these two graphs, Chen constructed infinite families of bridgeless cubic graphs $M_{0,1,2, \ldots,k-2, k-1}$ which is obtained from cyclically 4-edge-connected and having a Fulkerson-cover cubic graphs $G_0,G_1,\ldots, G_{k-1}$ by recursive process. If each $G_i$ for $1\leq i\leq k-1$ is a cyclically 4-edge-connected snarks with excessive index at…
Frame difference families, which can be obtained via a careful use of cyclotomic conditions attached to strong difference families, play an important role in direct constructions for resolvable balanced incomplete block designs. We establish asymptotic existences for several classes of frame difference families. As corollaries new infinite families of 1-rotational $(pq+1,p+1,1)$-RBIBDs over $\mathbb{F}_{p}^+ \times \mathbb{F}_{q}^+$ are derived, and the existence of $(125q+1,6,1)$-RBIBDs is discussed. We construct $(v,8,1)$-RBIBDs for $v\in\{624,1576,2976,5720,5776,10200,14176,24480\}$, whose …
Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It is a basic fact that the codewords of a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from codes has been done. In this paper, we determine the weight distributions of two classes of cyclic codes: one related to the triple-error correcting binary BCH codes, and the other related to the cyclic codes with parameters satisfying the generalized Kasami case, respectively. We then obtain infinite families of $2$-designs from these codes by proving…
We construct infinite families of abstract regular polytopes of type $\{4,p_1,\ldots,p_{n-1}\}$ from extensions of centrally symmetric spherical abstract regular $n$-polytopes. In addition, by applying the halving operation, we obtain infinite families of both locally spherical and locally toroidal regular hypertopes of type $\left\{{p_1 \atop p_1},\ldots,p_{n-1}\right\}$.
We determine two new infinite families of Cayley graphs that admit colour-preserving automorphisms that do not come from the group action. By definition, this means that these Cayley graphs fail to have the CCA (Cayley Colour Automorphism) property, and the corresponding infinite families of groups also fail to have the CCA property. The families of groups consist of the direct product of any dihedral group of order $2n$ where $n \ge 3$ is odd, with either itself, or the cyclic group of order $n$. In particular, this family of examples includes the smallest non-CCA group that had not fit into …
In this article we construct a series of new infinite families of strongly regular graphs with the same parameters as the point-graphs of non-singular quadrics in PG(n,2).
The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs started many years ago. While every $t$-design yields a linear code over every finite field, the largest $t$ for which an infinite family of $t$-designs is derived directly from a linear or nonlinear code is $t=3$. Sporadic $4$-designs and $5$-designs were derived from some linear codes of certain parameters. The major objective of this paper is to construct many infinite families of $2$-designs and $3$-designs from linear codes. The parameters of some known $t$-designs are also derived. In addition, many conjectured infinite families of $2$-…
This paper gives new solutions to the problem: 'Can we construct monohedral tilings of the disk such that a neighbourhood of the origin has trivial intersection with at least one tile?'
A line packing is optimal if its coherence is as small as possible. Most interesting examples of optimal line packings are achieving equality in some of the known lower bounds for coherence. In this paper two infinite families of real and complex biangular line packings are presented. New packings achieve equality in the real or complex second Levenshtein bound respectively. Both infinite families are constructed by analyzing well known representations of the finite groups SL$(2,\mathbb{F}_q)$. Until now the only known infinite familes meeting the second Levenshtein bounds were related to the …
Combinatorial transfer: a new method for constructing infinite families of nonabelian difference sets, partial difference sets, and relative difference sets
Homomorphism duality pairs play crucial role in the theory of relational structures and in the Constraint Satisfaction Problem. The case where both classes are finite is fully characterized. The case when both side are infinite seems to be very complex. It is also known that no finite-infinite duality pair is possible if we make the additional restriction that both classes are antichains. In this paper we characterize the infinite-finite antichain dualities and infinite-finite dualities with trees or forest on the left hand side. This work builds on our earlier papers that gave several example…
Recently, using modular forms and Smoot's {\tt Mathematica} implementation of Radu's algorithm for proving partition congruences, Merca proved the following two congruences: For all $n\geq 0,$ \begin{align*} A(9n+5) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}, \\ A(27n+26) & \equiv 0 \pmod{3}. \end{align*} Here $A(n)$ is closely related to the function which counts the number of {\it cubic partitions}, partitions wherein the even parts are allowed to appear in two different colors. Indeed, $A(n)$ is defined as the difference between the number of cubic partitions of $n$ into an even numbers of parts and the number of…
It has been known for a long time that $t$-designs can be employed to construct both linear and nonlinear codes and that the codewords of a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. While a lot of progress in the direction of constructing codes from $t$-designs has been made, only a small amount of work on the construction of $t$-designs from codes has been done. The objective of this paper is to construct infinite families of $2$-designs and $3$-designs from a type of binary linear codes with five-weights. The total number of $2$-designs and $3$-designs obtained in this paper are exponent…
For each $n,r \geq 0$, let $KG(n,r)$ denote the Kneser Graph; that whose vertices are labeled by $r$-element subsets of $n$, and whose edges indicate that the corresponding subsets are disjoint. Fixing $r$ and allowing $n$ to vary, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each equipped with a natural action by a symmetric group $S_n$, such that these actions are compatible. Collections of graphs of this type are common in algebraic combinatorics and include families such as the Johnson Graphs, Crown Graphs and Rook Graphs. In previous work, the authors systematically studied families of this typ…
Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an important research subject for many years, as they have wide applications in coding theory, cryptography, communications and statistics. The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has been attracted a lot of attention for both directions. It is well known that a linear code over any finite field can be derived from the incidence matrix of a $t$-design, meanwhile, that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code also may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, by determining the weight distribution of a class of linear codes derived from…
A combinatorial construction is used to analyze the properties of polyhedral products and generalized moment-angle complexes with respect to certain operations on CW pairs including exponentiation. This allows for the construction of infinite families of toric manifolds, associated to a given one, in a way which simplifies the combinatorial input and consequently, the presentation of the cohomology rings. The new input is the interaction of a purely combinatorial construction with natural associated geometric constructions related to polyhedral products and toric manifolds. Applications of the…
Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required…
Due to their important applications to coding theory, cryptography, communications and statistics, combinatorial $t$-designs have been attracted lots of research interest for decades. The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has on going for many years. As we all known, $t$-designs can be used to derive linear codes over any finite field, as well as the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code also may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, we first construct a class of linear codes from cyclic codes related to Dembowski-Ostrom functions. By using exponential sums, we then…
Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of narrow-sense BCH codes $\mathcal{C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^m$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support infinite families of 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$-designs with $t=3,4$. In particular, we prove that the codewords of weight $7$ in $\mathcal{C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support $4$-designs when $m \geqslant 5$ is odd and $…
For fixed positive integers $n$ and $k$, the Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ has vertices labeled by $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and edges between disjoint sets. Keeping $k$ fixed and allowing $n$ to grow, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each of which is acted on by a symmetric group in a way which is compatible with all of the other actions. In this paper, we provide a framework for studying families of this kind using the FI-module theory of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb, and show that this theory has a variety of asymptotic consequences for such families of graphs. These consequen…
We present new constructions for perfect and odd perfect sequences over the quaternion group $Q_8$. In particular, we show for the first time that perfect and odd perfect quaternion sequences exist in all lengths $2^t$ for $t\geq0$. In doing so we disprove the quaternionic form of Mow's conjecture that the longest perfect $Q_8$-sequence that can be constructed from an orthogonal array construction is of length 64. Furthermore, we use a connection to combinatorial design theory to prove the existence of a new infinite class of Williamson sequences, showing that Williamson sequences of length $2…
